Maintenance of the zonal momentum balance of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current by barotropic dynamics

Abstract The vertically integrated zonal momentum balance of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) is dominated by wind stress at the surface and topographic form stress (TFS) at the bottom. It has been argued that wind stress is transferred from the surface to the bottom by transient baroclinic eddies, via interfacial form stress, to establish the balance between wind stress and TFS. However, ocean models indicate TFS responds rapidly to changes in wind stress, suggesting that barotropic processes play a role in this balance. We investigate the dynamics governing the wind-TFS balance of the ACC and its response to wind using an idealized, wind- and buoyancy-driven channel model. We show that the balance is established and maintained at equilibrium by the barotropic dynamics. The balance results from continuity of the flow, in which the Ekman transport at the surface, balanced by wind stress, is compensated by a return flow at depth, balanced by TFS. This leads to a match between wind stress and TFS which is independent of momentum stresses in the interior. Transient baroclinic eddies oppose the wind-driven isopycnal steepening via eddy buoyancy fluxes, which act to flatten the isopycnals. The eddy-driven isopycnal flattening corresponds to a reduction in the zonal geostrophic shear and thus a redistribution of the zonal momentum in the interior via eddy momentum stresses. The maintenance of the vertically integrated ACC momentum balance by the barotropic dynamics explains the fast response of the wind-TFS balance to changes in wind forcing.

Revisiting circulation and water masses over the East Antarctic margin (80–150°E)

Full-depth hydrographic sections of the BROKE experiment in 1996 (across the Antarctic margin from 80 to 150°E; Bindoff et al., 2000) were revisited for the first time during the 2018/2019 austral summer. We describe the subsurface physical oceanography in 2019 and the hydrographic changes between 1996 and 2019 not documented in earlier studies. The survey captured decadal changes in ocean structure from the southern flank of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) to the continental shelves. In five cross-slope meridional sections, where 1996 and 2019 measurements are comparable (112, 120, 128, 140, and 150°E), the poleward shift of the southern boundary of the ACC (50–120 km) prevailed near the continental rise. The simultaneous displacement of barotropic ACC fronts and poleward migration of deep water contributed to full-depth warming (0.1–1.6 °C) and a reduction in the bottom water volume. Freshening was widely observed from the deep to bottom layers (∼0.02 g/kg), with the signal extending from the upper continental slope. Bottom-intensified freshening was accompanied by an oxygenation of 10–20 μmol/kg, indicating that freshening-driven oxygenation of bottom water counteracted the deoxygenation effect of the barotropic frontal shift. Westward transport of the Antarctic Slope Current decreased by more than 10 Sv from 1996 to 2019 in the five cross-slope sections; its frontal features and current axis shifted offshore by more than 20 km in 112–140°E. Additionally, subsurface warming along modified Circumpolar Deep Water by up to 0.4 °C was commonly detected across the upper continental slope. For the 2019 hydrography, shelf water sufficiently dense to form bottom water (>28.35 kg/m3) was found to the east of Mertz Polynya (142–148°E), implying a pathway for dense shelf water export from the eastern margin of Mertz Polynya. Our findings underscore the importance of sustained efforts for in-situ observations that widely cover the East Antarctic margin.

Five million years of Antarctic Circumpolar Current strength variability

The Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) represents the world’s largest ocean-current system and affects global ocean circulation, climate and Antarctic ice-sheet stability1–3. Today, ACC dynamics are controlled by atmospheric forcing, oceanic density gradients and eddy activity4. Whereas palaeoceanographic reconstructions exhibit regional heterogeneity in ACC position and strength over Pleistocene glacial–interglacial cycles5–8, the long-term evolution of the ACC is poorly known. Here we document changes in ACC strength from sediment cores in the Pacific Southern Ocean. We find no linear long-term trend in ACC flow since 5.3 million years ago (Ma), in contrast to global cooling9 and increasing global ice volume10. Instead, we observe a reversal on a million-year timescale, from increasing ACC strength during Pliocene global cooling to a subsequent decrease with further Early Pleistocene cooling. This shift in the ACC regime coincided with a Southern Ocean reconfiguration that altered the sensitivity of the ACC to atmospheric and oceanic forcings11–13. We find ACC strength changes to be closely linked to 400,000-year eccentricity cycles, probably originating from modulation of precessional changes in the South Pacific jet stream linked to tropical Pacific temperature variability14. A persistent link between weaker ACC flow, equatorward-shifted opal deposition and reduced atmospheric CO2 during glacial periods first emerged during the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT). The strongest ACC flow occurred during warmer-than-present intervals of the Plio-Pleistocene, providing evidence of potentially increasing ACC flow with future climate warming.

Deep winter mixed layer anchored by the meandering Antarctic Circumpolar Current: Cross-basin variations

Abstract A deep winter mixed layer forms north of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) in the Indo-Pacific sectors, while the mixed layer depth (MLD) is shallow in the Atlantic. Using observations and a global atmospheric model, this study investigates the contribution of surface buoyancy flux and background stratification to inter-basin MLD variations. The surface heat flux is decomposed into broad-scale and frontal-scale variations. At the broad-scale, the meandering ACC path is accompanied by a zonal wavenumber-1 structure of sea surface temperature with a warmer Pacific than Atlantic; under the prevailing westerly winds, this temperature contrast results in larger surface heat loss facilitating deeper MLD in the Indo-Pacific sectors than the Atlantic. In the Indian sector, the intense ACC fronts strengthen surface heat loss compared to the Pacific. The surface freshwater flux pattern largely follows that of evaporation and reinforces the heat flux pattern, especially in the southeast Pacific. A diagnostic relationship is introduced to highlight the role of ACC’s sloping isopycnals in setting a weak sub-mixed-layer stratification north of ACC. This weak stratification varies in magnitude across basins. In the Atlantic and western Indian oceans where the ACC is at a low latitude (∼45°S), solar heating, intrusions of subtropical gyres and energetic mesoscale eddies together maintain relatively strong stratification. In the southeast Pacific, in comparison, the ACC reaches the southernmost latitude (56°S), far away from the subtropical front. This creates weaker stratification allowing deep mixed layers to form, aided by surface buoyancy loss.

Temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of ocean temperature front in Antarctic Circumpolar Current waters

This article uses satellite data and reanalysis data to study the spatiotemporal distribution characteristics of ocean temperature fronts in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) waters under the proposed new classification standard using an optimized dynamic gradient threshold method based on Bayesian decision theory. The permanent oceanic front is mainly distributed between 40°S-65°S, with an average intensity of 1.5 °C per 100 kilometers; The average intensity of a semi permanent ocean front is 1.2 °C per 100 kilometers; The average intensity of the short-term oceanic front is around 1 °C per 100 kilometers. The determination of the optimal threshold in the ocean front recognition method adopted in this article is adaptive to the temperature distribution of the studied sea area, effectively reducing the subjectivity of threshold selection.

Observational Evidence of Cold Filamentary Intensification in an Energetic Meander of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

Abstract Eddy stirring at mesoscale oceanic fronts generates finescale filaments, visible in submesoscale-resolving model simulations and high-resolution satellite images of sea surface temperature, ocean color, and sea ice. Submesoscale filaments have widths of O(1–10) km and evolve on time scales of hours to days, making them extremely challenging to observe. Despite their relatively small scale, submesoscale processes play a key role in the climate system by providing a route to dissipation; altering the stratification of the ocean interior; and generating strong vertical velocities that exchange heat, carbon, nutrients, and oxygen between the mixed layer and the ocean interior. We present a unique set of in situ and satellite observations in a standing meander region of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) that supports the theory of cold filamentary intensification—revealing enhanced vertical velocities and evidence of subduction and ventilation associated with finescale cold filaments. We show that these processes are not confined to the mixed layer; EM-APEX floats reveal enhanced downward velocities (>100 m day−1) and evidence of ageostrophic motion extending as deep as 1600 dbar, associated with a ∼20-km-wide cold filament. A finer-scale (∼5 km wide) cold filament crossed by a towed Triaxus is associated with anomalous chlorophyll and oxygen values extending at least 100–200 dbar below the base of the mixed layer, implying recent subduction and ventilation. Energetic standing meanders within the weakly stratified ACC provide an environment conductive to the generation of finescale filaments that can transport water mass properties across mesoscale fronts and deep into the ocean interior.

Seasonal Variability of Global Intraseasonal SST Perturbations from 1982 to 2021

The seasonal variability of the intraseasonal SST perturbations is analysed based on the high spatial-temporal resolution and long-time series (1982-2021) OISST data. There are two bands of high intraseasonal variability (ISV, 20-90 days), one band is along the equatorial eastern Indian and western Pacific Oceans, the other is along the axis of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). For large-scale perturbations, during boreal winter, the ISV of SST is large south of the equator, especially south of 30°S. During boreal summer, the situation is opposite and the ISV is more concentrated north of 30°N. During boreal spring, the ISV is increasing north of equator. During boreal autumn, the ISV is increasing south of equator while decreasing north of equator. For small-scale perturbations, the ISV of SST is large all the time over the Southern Ocean and western boundary currents. In the tropical ocean, the small-scale ISV in the eastern Pacific Ocean is apparent in summer and autumn. Compared to large-scale ISV, the distribution areas of the small-scale ISV are apparently narrower.

Spatiotemporal Patterns of Polar Low Activity Over the Southern Ocean

AbstractPolar Lows (PLs) are intense maritime meso‐scale cyclones that form over cold ocean regions in high latitudes. They affect the weather and climate of Antarctica and the surrounding ocean by producing storms with near or above gale‐force winds and heavy precipitation. This study investigated PLs in the Southern Ocean (SO) between 60 and 85°S from 2000 to 2020, using a tracking algorithm applied to the ERA5, CCMP, and NCEP/NCAR data sets. The results showed that PLs are most frequent in winter (JJA) and least frequent in summer (DJF), with a maximum in 2018 and a minimum in 2014. The results also show that PLs are concentrated over the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) region, along the Ross Sea, the Amundsen Sea, and the Bellingshausen Sea from April to October. These regions have strong thermal gradients and orographic forcing that enhance cyclogenesis. Our research reveals that there were 1,073 occurrences of PLs during the study period, with an average 51 cases per year. The study also explored the influence of sea surface temperature anomalies, sea surface currents, and MCAOs Index on PL genesis. The Amundsen‐Bellingshausen Seas Low (ABSL) and Pacific Ocean currents have a considerable effect on PLs developing in the SO. This research provides valuable information on PLs in the SO, which are poorly observed and understood. However, more research is required to understand how these phenomena are evolving in the present, and how they will change in the future.

Seasonal and Interannual Variability Between Upper Ocean Processes and the Slope Current in the Region Around the Cosmonauts Sea Off East Antarctica

AbstractThe impacts of large‐scale climate variability on the current system and meridional transport in the Cosmonauts Sea off East Antarctica are studied by employing the satellite‐observed absolute dynamic topography (ADT) data and reanalysis hydrographic data. Three currents converge in the Cosmonauts Sea: the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), the Weddell Gyre Eastern Branch (WGeb) and the Antarctic Slope Current (ASC) containing the Antarctic Slope Front (ASF) topographically locked in the slope region. Strong seasonal and interannual variations are associated with these currents. The ACC and ASC are both stronger in autumn and weaker in spring and summer, while the WGeb extends eastward in winter and retreats in summer. On the interannual timescale, the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) reinforces the westerlies during its positive phase, pushing the ACC southward and suppressing westward ASC, and vice versa. The results on related mechanisms suggest the significant barotropic modulations induced by the winds on ocean dynamics from both the sea surface and interior ocean. The westerlies could affect the meridional sea level gradient through Ekman transport convergence, inducing the geostrophic adjustment of currents. Moreover, the vorticity input from the wind field produces meridional water transport under the topographic and planetary β‐effects, potentially influencing the structure of the ASF and associated ASC. This frontal adjustment is superimposed on the background barotropic variations and causes strong local responses of the currents to the remote wind forcing, which indicates a propagation of variability signals from large‐scale barotropic circulations to frontal‐scale baroclinic currents in the ocean interior.

Turbulence Across the Antarctic Circumpolar Current in the Indian Southern Ocean: Micro‐Temperature Measurements and Finescale Parameterizations

AbstractTurbulence structures across the Antarctic circumpolar current (ACC) in the Indian Ocean at around 50°E were revealed using microstructure measurements. Depth‐averaged turbulent energy dissipation rates (ε) in 320 m segments estimated using a conductivity‐temperature‐depth (CTD)‐attached micro‐temperature fast‐response thermistor (FP07) were well reproduced using existing finescale parameterizations excluding near‐surface and near‐bottom 160 m. The spatial variations of ε are explained by density stratification N2, bottom topographic roughness, and depth‐averaged current speed U. Diapycnal diffusivity Kρ(=0.2εN−2) is found proportional to the squared internal wave energy () and increases toward the bottom, especially over rough bottom topography. The decay scale height is >1000m and the turbulence remains large even in the upper pycnocline. Existing shear‐based finescale parameterizations were generally consistent with the FP07 measurements but tended to overestimate in the areas with large shear‐strain ratio Rω and low ε in the Continental Zone (CZ) south of the ACC fronts (58–65°S). This overestimation is improved by using the strain‐based finescale parameterization with a constant Rω = 3.

Radiolarian assemblages related to the ocean–ice interaction around the East Antarctic coast

Abstract. The Southern Ocean plays a central role in Earth's climate, ecology, and biogeochemical cycles. Therefore, understanding long-term changes in Southern Ocean water masses in the geologic past is essential for assessing the role of the Southern Ocean in the climate system. Radiolarian fossils are a useful tool to reconstruct the water masses of the Southern Ocean. However, the radiolarian assemblages in the high latitudes of the Southern Ocean (south of the polar front (PF)) are still poorly understood. In this paper, we report the radiolarian assemblages in surface marine sediment and plankton tow samples collected from the high latitudes south of the PF. In the surface sediments, four factors (named F1–F4) of the radiolarian assemblages were identified using Q-mode factor analysis, which are related to different water masses and hydrological conditions. F1 is related to the surface waters south of the southern boundary (SB) of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), which are cooled by melting sea ice and ice sheets. F2 is associated with water masses north of the SB. A comparison with the vertical distribution of the radiolarian assemblages in plankton tow samples indicates that characteristic species are associated with the Circumpolar Deep Water (CDW) and surface waters north of the SB. F3 is associated with modified Circumpolar Deep Water (mCDW). The radiolarian assemblage of F4 does not seem specifically related to any of the water mass here analyzed. However, the species in this assemblage are typically dwells within ice shelf and/or sea ice edge environments. Radiolarian assemblages here identified and associated with water masses, and ice edge environments are useful to reconstruct the environment south of the PF in the geologic past.

Tracer Stirring and Variability in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current Near the Southwest Indian Ridge

AbstractOceanic macroturbulence is efficient at stirring and transporting tracers. The dynamical properties of this stirring can be characterized by statistically quantifying tracer structures. Here, we characterize the macroscale (1–100 km) tracer structures observed by two Seagliders downstream of the Southwest Indian Ridge in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). These are some of the first glider observations in an energetic standing meander of the ACC, a region associated with enhanced ventilation. The small‐scale density variance in the mixed layer (ML) was relatively enhanced near the surface and base of the ML, while being muted at mid‐depth in the ML, suggesting the formation mechanism to be associated with ML instabilities and eddies. In addition, ML density fronts were formed by comparable contributions from temperature and salinity gradients. In the interior, along‐isopycnal spectra and structure functions of spice indicated that there is relatively lower variance at smaller scales than would be expected based on non‐local stirring, suggesting that flows smaller than the deformation radius play a role in the cascade of tracers to small scales. These interior spice anomalies spanned across isopycnals, and were found to be about 3–5 times flatter than the aspect ratio that would be expected for O(1) Burger number flows like interior QG dynamics, suggesting the ratio of vertical shear to horizontal strain is greater than N/f. This further supports that small‐scale flows, with high‐mode vertical structures, impact tracer distributions.

Deep Convection as the Key to the Transition From Eocene to Modern Antarctic Circumpolar Current

AbstractFrom the Eocene (∼50 million years ago) to today, Southern Ocean circulation has evolved from the existence of two ocean gyres to the dominance of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). It has generally been thought that the opening of Southern Ocean gateways in the late Eocene, in addition to the alignment of westerly winds with these gateways or the presence of the Antarctic ice sheet, was a sufficient requirement for the transition to an ACC of similar strength to its modern equivalent. Nevertheless, models representing these changes produce a much weaker ACC. Here we show, using an eddying ocean model, that the missing ingredient in the transition to a modern ACC is deep convection around the Antarctic continent. This deep convection is caused by cold temperatures and high salinities due to sea‐ice production around the Antarctic continent, leading to both the formation of Antarctic Bottom Water and a modern‐strength ACC.

Relationship between the AMOC and the Multidecadal Variability of the Midlatitude Southern Indian Ocean

Abstract Air–sea coupling system in the southwestern Indian Ocean (SWIO; 35°–55°S, 40°–75°E) exhibits predominant multidecadal variability that is the strongest during austral summer. It is characterized by an equivalent barotropic atmospheric high (low) pressure over warm (cold) sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies and a poleward (equatorward) shift of the westerlies during the positive (negative) phase. In this study, physical processes of this multidecadal variability are investigated by using observations/reanalysis and CMIP6 model simulations. Results suggest that the multidecadal fluctuation can be explained by the modulation of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) and the local air–sea positive feedback in the SWIO. In both observations/reanalysis and CMIP6 model simulations, the AMOC fluctuation presents a significantly negative correlation with the multidecadal SST variation in the SWIO when the AMOC is leading by about a decade. The mechanisms are that the preceding AMOC variation can cause an interhemispheric dipolar pattern of SST anomalies in the Atlantic Ocean. Subsequently, the SST anomalies in the midlatitudes of the South Atlantic can propagate to the SWIO by the oceanic Rossby wave under the influence of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). Once the SST anomalies reach the SWIO, these SST anomalies in the oceanic front can affect the baroclinicity in the lower troposphere to influence the synoptic transient eddy and then cause the atmospheric circulation anomaly via the eddy–mean flow interaction. Subsequently, the anomalous atmospheric circulation over the SWIO can significantly strengthen the SST anomalies through modifying the oceanic meridional temperature advection and latent and sensible heat flux.

Spatial and temporal variability in Holocene trough-fill sediments, King Haakon Trough System, sub-Antarctic South Georgia

The climate in the South Atlantic sector of the sub-Antarctic, and therefore on and around the island of South Georgia, is dependent on the Southern Hemisphere Westerlies (SHW) and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). The SHW and the ACC, in turn, are strongly controlled by climate variability in the Southern Hemisphere. Accordingly, thick sediment sequences in the troughs across South Georgia's continental shelf serve as valuable archives for past climate variations in the Southern Ocean. Since Holocene climate fluctuations led to only minimal oscillations in glacier margin positions within the fjords, the entire shelf was exposed to dynamic ocean currents since at least 10 ka BP. Its depositional systems are therefore a suitable target for the reconstruction of Holocene dynamics of both the SHW and the ACC. Sub-bottom profiler data and radiocarbon ages from four gravity cores from the south-western South Georgia continental shelf provide evidence for a complex interplay between island run-off and ocean currents intruding into a unique cross-shelf trough system during the last ∼10 ka. The data reveal several prominent changes in sediment and Holocene climate dynamics, the most significant occurring between 8 and 7.7 cal ka BP and between 2.6 and 2.2 cal ka BP. Both of these time periods represent transitions from warmer to cooler and windier conditions in South Georgia and the Southern Hemisphere. Our record from the King Haakon Trough System is the first highly resolved Holocene archive from the marine realm on the south-western South Georgia continental shelf and suggests several large-scale Southern Hemisphere climate changes during the mid-to late Holocene.

An evaluation of the LLC4320 global-ocean simulation based on the submesoscale structure of modeled sea surface temperature fields

Abstract. We have assembled 2 851 702 nearly cloud-free cutout images (sized 144 km × 144 km) of sea surface temperature (SST) data from the entire 2012–2020 Level-2 Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) dataset to perform a quantitative comparison to the ocean model output from the MIT General Circulation Model (MITgcm). Specifically, we evaluate outputs from the LLC4320 (LLC, latitude–longitude–polar cap) 148∘ global-ocean simulation for a 1-year period starting on 17 November 2011 but otherwise matched in geography and the day of the year to the VIIRS observations. In lieu of simple (e.g., mean, standard deviation) or complex (e.g., power spectrum) statistics, we analyze the cutouts of SST anomalies with an unsupervised probabilistic autoencoder (PAE) trained to learn the distribution of structures in SST anomaly (SSTa) on ∼ 10–80 km scales (i.e., submesoscale to mesoscale). A principal finding is that the LLC4320 simulation reproduces, over a large fraction of the ocean, the observed distribution of SSTa patterns well, both globally and regionally. Globally, the medians of the structure distributions match to within 2σ for 65 % of the ocean, despite a modest, latitude-dependent offset. Regionally, the model outputs reproduce mesoscale variations in SSTa patterns revealed by the PAE in the VIIRS data, including subtle features imprinted by variations in bathymetry. We also identify significant differences in the distribution of SSTa patterns in several regions: (1) in an equatorial band equatorward of 15∘; (2) in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), especially in the eastern half of the Indian Ocean; and (3) in the vicinity of the point at which western boundary currents separate from the continental margin. It is clear that region 3 is a result of premature separation in the simulated western boundary currents. The model output in region 2, the southern Indian Ocean, tends to predict more structure than observed, perhaps arising from a misrepresentation of the mixed layer or of energy dissipation and stirring in the simulation. The differences in region 1, the equatorial band, are also likely due to model errors, perhaps arising from the shortness of the simulation or from the lack of high-frequency and/or wavenumber atmospheric forcing. Although we do not yet know the exact causes for these model–data SSTa differences, we expect that this type of comparison will help guide future developments of high-resolution global-ocean simulations.

Comparative Analysis of Jet Detection Methods on the Basis of Satellite Altimetry Data by Example of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current Sector to the South of Africa

The analysis was carried out by a method developed earlier and refined in this paper using linear regression analysis. It is shown that qualitatively the characters of the meridional shifts (displacement of the curves of these parameters averaged over latitude and for each year) in latitude and the corresponding current intensity variations (i.e., variations in the parameters themselves) over 26-year observations, when calculated through each of the four parameters, turned out to be similar. The same similarity was obtained from the calculations with respect to the ADT scale. Meanwhile, the quantitative differences between calculations for different pairs of parameters can be significant even in the \\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\left| u \\right|$$\\end{document} and \\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\left| {\ abla \\zeta } \\right|$$\\end{document} pair. In quantitative terms, the absolute values of shifts of the jet structure and variations in the intensity of currents in the ACC band in the studied sector of the Southern Ocean generally increase from those linearly dependent on the ADT gradient module to quadratically dependent ones.

Compensating transport trends in the Drake Passage frontal regions yield no acceleration in net transport

Although the westerly winds that drive the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) have increased over the past several decades, the ACC response remains an open question. Here we use a 15-year time series of concurrent upper-ocean temperature, salinity, and ocean velocity with high spatial resolution across Drake Passage to analyze whether the net Drake Passage transport has accelerated in the last 15 years. We find that, although the net Drake Passage transport relative to 760 m shows insignificant acceleration, the net transport trend comprises compensating trends across the ACC frontal regions. Our results show an increase in the mesoscale eddy activity between the fronts consistent with buoyancy changes in the fronts and with an eddy saturation state. Furthermore, the increased eddy activity may play a role in redistributing momentum across the ACC frontal regions. The increase in eddy activity is expected to intensify the eddy-driven upwelling of deep warm waters around Antarctica, which has significant implications for ice-melting, sea level rise, and global climate.

Basin-scale tracer replacement timescales in a one-degree global OGCM

This study investigates basin-scale tracer replacement timescales of the two polar oceans and the Atlantic, Indian, and Pacific Oceans using a one-degree global ocean-sea ice model that represents oceans under the largest Antarctic ice shelves, the Filchner-Ronne and Ross Ice Shelf (FRIS and RIS). After a long spin-up with present-day surface boundary conditions, we confirm that the model has a typical representation of wind-driven and thermohaline circulations in one-degree ocean models. We use virtual passive tracers placed in the five oceans and examine the behavior of the passive tracers to estimate the tracer replacement timescales and pathways of the basin-scale ocean waters. Replacement timescales in the polar oceans (114 years for the Southern Ocean and 109 years for the Arctic Ocean) are found to be shorter than those in the three oceans (217 years for the Atlantic Ocean, 163 years for the Indian Ocean, and 338 years for the Pacific Ocean). The Southern Ocean tracer has two clear pathways to the Northern Hemisphere: the surface route in the Atlantic Ocean and the bottom route in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This surface route is a rapid conduit to transport the Southern Ocean signal to the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans. The Atlantic Ocean tracer is transported to both polar regions along the North Atlantic Current and the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC). The tracer experiments clearly demonstrate that Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays a vital role in transporting the water masses in the Atlantic and Arctic Oceans to the Southern Ocean. The southward flow of the AMOC at the intermediate depths carries the northern waters to the ACC region, and then the water spreads over the Southern Ocean along the eastward-flowing ACC. The decay timescales of water in the ice-shelf cavities exposed to the water outside the Southern Ocean are estimated to be approximately 150 years for both the FIRS and RIS. The decay timescales in the Antarctic coastal region are short at the surface and long in the deep layers, with a noticeable reduction in the areas where ACC flows southward toward the Antarctic continent.

Carbon Outgassing in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current Is Supported by Ekman Transport From the Sea Ice Zone in an Observation‐Based Seasonal Mixed‐Layer Budget

AbstractDespite its importance for the global cycling of carbon, there are still large gaps in our understanding of the processes driving annual and seasonal carbon fluxes in the high‐latitude Southern Ocean. This is due in part to a historical paucity of observations in this remote, turbulent, and seasonally ice‐covered region. Here, we use autonomous biogeochemical float data spanning 6 full seasonal cycles and with circumpolar coverage of the Southern Ocean, complemented by atmospheric reanalysis, to construct a monthly climatology of the mixed layer budget of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). We investigate the processes that determine the annual mean and seasonal cycle of DIC fluxes in two different zones of the Southern Ocean—the Sea Ice Zone (SIZ) and Antarctic Southern Zone (ASZ). We find that, annually, mixing with carbon‐rich waters at the base of the mixed layer supplies DIC which is, in the ASZ, either used for net biological production or outgassed to the atmosphere. In contrast, in the SIZ, where carbon outgassing and the biological pump are weaker, the surplus of DIC is instead advected northward to the ASZ. In other words, carbon outgassing in the southern Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC), which has been attributed to remineralized carbon from deep water upwelled in the ACC, is also due to the wind‐driven transport of DIC from the SIZ. These results stem from the first observation‐based carbon budget of the circumpolar Southern Ocean and thus provide a useful benchmark to evaluate climate models, which have significant biases in this region.
