Seasonal Reversal of ENSO Impacts on SST in the East China Sea–Kuroshio Region

Abstract Sea surface temperature (SST) variability in the East China Sea–Kuroshio (EK) region has important implications for the surrounding weather, climate, and marine ecology. The year-to-year variations of the EK SST are expectedly linked to El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the predominant predictability source of seasonal-to-interannual climate variability. Surprisingly, no significant SST signal is observed in the EK region when focusing on the ENSO autumn–winter season with the persistent and pronounced SST anomalies in the tropical Pacific. We find that a remarkable seasonal reversal appears in the ENSO–EK SST connection, shifting from a negative relationship in autumn [Aug(0)–Oct(0)] to a positive relationship in winter [Dec(0)–Feb(1)]. This reversal is mainly attributed to the seasonally varying ENSO-associated western North Pacific (WNP) atmospheric circulation patterns. During ENSO autumns, the anomalous WNP anticyclone is confined south of 20°N, which is accompanied with cyclonic circulation anomalies in the EK region. The associated anomalous northerly wind tends to enhance the background northerly wind, thereby facilitating the local SST cooling mainly via the wind–evaporation–SST effect. In the subsequent winter, the ENSO-related WNP anticyclonic anomalies intensify and extend toward the EK region. Consequently, the weakened background northerly wind induced by southerly wind anomalies leads to the increase of downward latent and sensible heat flux in the EK region, fostering the local SST warming. The observed seasonal reversal of ENSO impacts can be evidenced by the tropical Pacific pacemaker experiments, emphasizing the importance of seasonally modulated ENSO teleconnection and holding implications for the local SST climate prediction.

Midwinter breakdown of ENSO climate impacts in East Asia

The El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influence on the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) exhibits remarkable non-stationarity on subseasonal timescales, severely limiting climate predictability. Here, based on observational and reanalysis datasets, we identify a robust subseasonal variability in the EAWM response to ENSO, with a notable synchronous break in mid-January lasting about 10 days. We suggest that this breakdown is largely caused by interference from the abrupt phase reversal of the ENSO-driven North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), which occurs about a week earlier in early January. During El Niño years, the NAO phase transition from positive to negative triggers a rapid change in the mid-latitude atmospheric circulation via the quasi-stationary Rossby wave adjustment. This results in the strengthening of the Siberian high, which produces strong northerly wind anomalies over East Asia, while the anomalous western North Pacific anticyclone weakens and shrinks to the south, eventually leading to the collapse of the teleconnection.

Impact of centennial-scale solar activity reduction on the weakened Asian monsoon event at 9.2 ka BP

The weakened Asian monsoon event at 9.2 ka has been documented in many proxy-based reconstructions, but its underlying causes are uncertain. In this study, we investigated this event from a regional monsoon perspective by analysing simulations of Holocene transient solar activity forcing using the Community Earth System Model and high-resolution proxies. Our results revealed two separate periods of decreasing precipitation in the western North Pacific (WNP) and South Asian (SA) monsoons from 9.5 to 9.2 ka, each lagging behind two remarkable weakening events (0.38 and 0.21 W m−2) in solar forcing. However, there was no significant change in East Asian summer monsoon precipitation at 9.2 ka based on our experiment. Moisture budget analysis indicated that the dynamic effects term (i.e., anomalous descending motion) figured prominently in decreasing WNP and SA monsoon precipitation. Such a change was affected by an anomalous WNP anticyclone, which was maintained by the ‘wind-evaporation-sea surface temperature’ feedback during the decay phase of the centennial-scale El Niño-like event. The development of centennial El Niño-like conditions was caused by a reduction in solar irradiance. Reduced solar irradiance induced cooling over northern Australia, generating anomalous zonal sea level pressure gradients and westerlies over the tropical Pacific, ultimately resulting in the development of an El Niño-like pattern.

Record-breaking 2020 summer marine heatwaves in the western North Pacific

Record-breaking marine heatwaves (MHWs) occurred in the western North Pacific during the summer of 2020. These unprecedented MHWs were consistent with favorable large-scale conditions that are linked to an anomalous western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH), resulting mainly from sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies across the tropical oceans. In addition, a moderate La Niña-like pattern was also conducive to transporting warm seawater to the western North Pacific. Mixed-layer heat budgets suggest that surface heat flux contributed to the SST anomaly in the western subtropical Pacific. In contrast, oceanic heat advection dominanted in the South China Sea and the western equatorial Pacific. Numerical model experiments indicated that the tropical Indian Ocean SST anomalies were responsible for the enhanced WNPSH. The increased zonal SST gradient across the tropical Pacific also played an important role. Inter-ocean interactions can modulate climate variability through ocean-atmospheric coupling and deserve more attention when predicting MHWs within the context of global warming. In addition, it is critical to consider MHWs as a powerful tool in detecting acute, intense thermal stress events in the coral bleaching pre-warning system.

Why was the heat wave in the Yangtze River valley abnormally intensified in late summer 2022?

A record-breaking heat wave hit the Yangtze River valley during the boreal summer of 2022, and caused severe social and economic losses. One prominent feature of this long-lived heat event was its persistence and abnormal intensification in August. This study investigated the physical mechanisms be responsible for the intensification of this heat event in late summer under the background of a La Niña event. The prolonged heat event was directly related to the intensification and westward extension of the western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH), which can be attributed to the synergistic effects of an anomalous western North Pacific (WNP) anticyclone and the eastward extension of the South Asian high (SAH) in the upper troposphere. The anomalous anticyclone in the WNP, which was induced by negative sea surface temperature anomalies in the central tropical Pacific, strengthened in August. The positive sea surface temperature anomaly in the western Pacific warm pool and enhanced in-situ convection led to anomalous high pressure over the Yangtze River valley via the local meridional circulation. Atmospheric convergence and descending motion over the Yangtze River valley was amplified in August as a result of the zonal shift in the SAH from the Iranian Plateau to the Tibetan Plateau. The Silk Road pattern (SRP) index of August 2022 was the lowest since the 1990s. The abnormal negative phase of the SRP contributed to both the zonal shift in the SAH and the westward extension of the WNPSH, which led to the abnormal intensification of the heat event over the Yangtze River valley in August 2022.

Influence of boreal spring sea surface temperature anomalies over the tropical South Atlantic on the Meiyu onset

This study investigates the impact of boreal spring tropical South Atlantic surface sea temperature anomalies (TSA-SSTA) on the anticyclone over the western North Pacific (WNPAC) and the Meiyu onset date (MOD) based on reanalysis data and numerical experiments. The results indicate an intimate linkage between the MOD and TSA-SSTA, in which warmer spring TSA-SSTA are associated with an earlier MOD and vice versa, and the underlying mechanism is identified. Warm TSA-SSTA can trigger a Gill-type response and anomalous equatorial Walker circulation, which leads to anomalous upward motion and latent heating over the Maritime Continent. This anomalous condition over the Maritime Continent strengthens local Hadley circulation accordingly accompanied by anomalous descending motion over the western North Pacific. This descending motion reduces the local rainfall and enhances the equatorward northerly wind at low level. Further analysis reveals that local Sverdrup positive feedback between the anomalous diabatic cooling owing to reduced rainfall and the lower-level equatorward northerly wind is critical for sustaining the well-developed anomalous WNPAC. The abundant water vapor transport embedded in the northwestern flank of the anomalous WNPAC eventually favors an earlier MOD. Atmospheric conditions corresponding to cold TSA-SSTA produce the opposite effect. The spring TSA-SSTA can therefore prominently communicate with the subsequent East Asian MOD via the aforementioned mechanism, and the spring TSA-SSTA can be interpreted as a precursor signal of the East Asian MOD.

A 10‐Year Thundersnow Climatology Over China

AbstractThundersnow is a special kind of thunderstorm that combines snowfall and lightning. A 10‐year thundersnow climatology over China was obtained based on observations during 2008–2017. Our results show that thundersnows are widely distributed in China, and most of the high‐frequency areas are located in the Tibetan Plateau and northeastern China. The average frequency of thundersnow decreases with decreasing altitude, and thundersnow usually occurs at low‐altitude stations once every 10 years. Thundersnow, which likely induces great total snowfall depths, appears mostly in spring, autumn and late winter and can occur in high‐altitude areas in summer. The blizzard probability on a thundersnow day is 12.7%. The percentage of positive cloud‐to‐ground lightning of winter thundersnow is approximately 20.7%, which is lower than those in other seasons. The negative phase of the Arctic Oscillation and anomalous western North Pacific anticyclone are favorable background conditions for thundersnow events.

Respective and Combined Impacts of North Indian Ocean and Tropical North Atlantic SST Anomalies on the Subseasonal Evolution of Anomalous Western North Pacific Anticyclones

Abstract The subseasonal variation of the anomalous western North Pacific anticyclone (WNPAC) has important implications for East Asian summer monsoon variability. How the WNPAC evolves on the subseasonal time scale under the different configurations of tropical North Atlantic (TNA) Ocean and north Indian Ocean (NIO) SST warming is elucidated in this study. The WNPAC forced by individual TNA SST warming shows an obvious subseasonal variation with a stepwise northward movement. In contrast, the WNPAC forced by individual NIO SST warming shows a weak subseasonal variation, being nearly stabilized at around 20°N from June to August and thereby causing long-lasting and intense positive mei-yu–baiu–changma rainfall anomalies. The physical mechanism for the different subseasonal variation of WNPAC is further investigated. The TNA SST warming generates a WNPAC via a Rossby wave–induced divergence/convergence chain response. In this process, the TNA SST warming-induced suppressed convection over the western Pacific moves northward with the northward movement of climatological intertropical convergence zone and summer monsoon region, which generates a northward shift of the WNPAC. However, the NIO SST warming produces a WNPAC via a Kelvin wave–induced suppressed convection over the western Pacific Ocean. This suppressed convection is stabilized at around 20°N because of the Kelvin wave activity scope being limited within 20°N, which finally produces a nearly stationary WNPAC from June to August. In addition, under the simultaneous occurrence of the TNA and NIO SST warming, the subseasonal variation of WNPAC bears a resemblance to that for the individual NIO SST warming condition, where the TNA SST warming fails to exert its impact.

Holocene Multi‐Centennial Variations of the Asian Summer Monsoon Triggered by Solar Activity

AbstractSolar activity affects Asian summer monsoon (ASM) at various time scales. However, it remains unknown if and how solar activity can influence ASM on the centennial time scale. Using the Community Earth System Model, we conduct a solar activity forced Holocene transient simulation with an acceleration factor of 10 and show that during the middle–late Holocene ASM precipitation exhibits a significant 300–600‐year periodicity under solar forcing. This model‐produced multi‐centennial variation is also suggested by proxy data. The leading mode of the multi‐centennial ASM variation shows a “wet tropics–dry subtropics” pattern, which lags the corresponding solar activity by about a quarter cycle. The western North Pacific (WNP) circulation system is responsible for the multi‐centennial ASM variation, through enhancing the climatological south Asia–WNP monsoon trough. We suggest that solar activity modulates the zonal SST gradients of the tropical Pacific, inducing the anomalous WNP cyclone and enhancing ASM precipitation in a delayed mode.

Does the Antarctic Oscillation modulate tropical cyclone rapid intensification over the western North Pacific?

This study investigates the modulation of tropical cyclone (TCs) rapid intensification (RI) over the western North Pacific by the Antarctic Oscillation. There is a significant inverse relationship between basinwide RI number during July–November from 1982 to 2020 and the simultaneous Antarctic Oscillation index. During positive Antarctic Oscillation years, RI occurrence is significantly suppressed over the main RI region (10°–20° N and 125°–150° E) and slightly enhanced over the South China Sea. By contrast, during negative Antarctic Oscillation years, RI is significantly enhanced over the main RI region and slightly suppressed over the South China Sea. The Antarctic Oscillation influences western North Pacific RI occurrence mainly through modulation of the large-scale dynamic environment. During positive Antarctic Oscillation years, increases in 850–200 hPa vertical wind shear and decreases in both low-level vorticity and upper-level divergence all suppress RI occurrence over the main RI region, while thermodynamic variables (e.g. TC heat potential, maximum potential intensity and low-to-middle level relative humidity) show mostly weak changes. These changes in dynamic factors can be linked to a low-level anomalous western North Pacific anticyclone triggered by the positive phase of the Antarctic Oscillation and a low-level anomalous western North Pacific cyclone generated by a negative phase of the Antarctic Oscillation.

MJO Phase Swings Modulate the Recurring Latitudinal Shifts of the 2020 Extreme Summer‐Monsoon Rainfall Around Yangtse

AbstractConsidering the unprecedented extremity of the Meiyu episodes in early summer of 2020, here the authors perform a comprehensive study of the intraseasonal evolution characteristics of the observed rainfall round Yangtse as well as the potential modulating effect of Madden‐Julian Oscillation (MJO). Results suggest that the Meiyu rainfall manifests as recurring latitudinal shifts around Yangtse during June–July of 2020, corresponding well to the continued swings of MJO circulation and convection between Phase 1 and Phase 2. The MJO affects the meridional migration of the 2020 Meiyu rainfall mainly through regulating the westward extended ridge line and southwesterly of the anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific (WNP). Specifically, the northeastward propagation of boreal summer MJO from Phase 1 to 2 shifts the ridge line of the anomalous WNP anticyclone northeastward. Consequently, the associated southwesterly anomaly over the southeastern China penetrates to the north of Yangtse and enhances the lower‐tropospheric moisture flux convergence, supporting heavy precipitation there. However, when the MJO swings back to Phase 1, the anomalous southwesterly and moisture flux convergence retreat southward, so does the Meiyu rain band. The present results advanced our understanding of the interactions between the latitudinal shifts of extreme Meiyu rainfall episodes and MJO Phase swings.

Interpreting the nonstationary relationship between El Niño–Southern Oscillation and the winter precipitation over southeast China

AbstractThe amount of winter precipitation over southeast China (SCWP) is significantly affected by the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), with generally an enhanced SCWP response to El Niño events. In this paper, we find that this relationship shows remarkable nonstationarities on the multidecadal timescale. Running ENSO–SCWP correlation maintains statistically significant before the mid‐1960s and after the mid‐1990s but not during the interim period, which exhibits an approximate synchronized temporal evolution with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO). A statistical method for interpreting nonstationary relationships is then applied to quantitatively verify and measure this possible AMO modulation. It is demonstrated that the nonstationary ENSO–SCWP correlation can be expressed to a large extent by the influence of the AMO–ENSO nonlinear effect (AMO*Niño3.4) on the SCWP. This influence intensifies the ENSO–SCWP relationship during the positive AMO phase but weakens it during the negative AMO phase. Therefore, the nonstationarity in the ENSO–SCWP relationship comes predominantly from an AMO modulation via this key nonlinear effect. We further suggest that a positive AMO favours a westward shift of ENSO sea surface temperature (SST) anomaly pattern in the tropical Pacific. Correspondingly, the anomalous western North Pacific (WNP) anticyclone also migrates westward, which gives rise to pronounced moisture transports and vertical motions over the adjacent southeast China, thereby resulting in a significant ENSO–SCWP relationship. In contrast, during the negative AMO phase, the eastward‐shifted ENSO SST and WNP anticyclonic anomalies produce significant atmospheric anomalies primarily to the east of the Chinese mainland, thus having less effect on the SCWP.

Termination 1 Millennial‐Scale Rainfall Events Over the Sunda Shelf

AbstractRecent paleoclimate reconstructions have suggested millennial‐scale variability in the Indo‐Pacific Warm Pool region coincident with events of the last deglaciation. Here, we present a new stalagmite oxygen isotope record from northern Borneo, which today is located near the center of the region's mean annual intertropical convergence zone. The record spans the full deglaciation, and reveals for the first time distinct oxygen isotope variations at this location connected with the Bølling‐Allerød onset and the Younger Dryas event. The full deglaciation in the Borneo stalagmite proxy reconstruction appears remarkably similar to a 20–11 ka transient simulation of rainfall over the area produced using the isotope‐enabled Community Earth System Model. In this model, periods of weakened Atlantic Ocean meridional overturning circulation are associated with an anomalous Western North Pacific anticyclone, which is produced in boreal autumn and shifts south over Borneo during boreal winter, causing dry conditions.

The role of Indian Ocean warming on extreme rainfall in central China during early summer 2020: without significant El Niño influence

This study investigates the roles of water vapor transport and sea surface temperature (SST) warming in the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) on the heavy rainfall in central China during the boreal early summer (May–June–July). In the past four decades, four significant rainfall events, in 1983, 1998, 2016, and 2020, occurred in central China and caused severe floods, and the year 2020 has the most extreme event. All four events are associated with significant TIO SST warming and a strong anomalous anticyclone on the western North Pacific (WNPAC). The anomalous winds in the northwestern flank of the WNPAC bring excess water vapor into central China. The water vapor, mainly carried from the western tropical Pacific, converges in central China and result in heavy rainfall. A theory of regional ocean–atmosphere interaction can well explain the processes, called the Indo-Western Pacific Ocean Capacitor (IPOC) effect. The WNPAC is usually associated with strong El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO), except for the 2020 case. The 2020 event is extraordinary without a significant El Niño occurred in the previous winter. In 2020, the significant TIO warming sustained the anomalous WNPAC, inducing the most significant extreme rainfall event in central China. This study reveals that the IPOC effect can dramatically influence the East Asian climate even without involving the ENSO in the Pacific.

Interdecadal Changes in the Relationship between Wintertime Surface Air Temperature over the Indo-China Peninsula and ENSO

Abstract Interdecadal variations of the relationship between El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Indo-China Peninsula (ICP) surface air temperature (SAT) in winter are investigated in the study. Generally, there exists a positive correlation between them during 1958–2015 because the ENSO-induced anomalous western North Pacific anticyclone (WNPAC) is conducive to pronounced temperature advection anomalies over the ICP. However, such correlation is unstable in time, having experienced a high-to-low transition around the mid-1970s and a recovery since the early 1990s. This oscillating relationship is owing to the anomalous WNPAC intensity in different decades. During the epoch of high correlation, the anomalous WNPAC and associated southwesterly winds over the ICP are stronger, which brings amounts of warm temperature advection and markedly heats the ICP. In contrast, a weaker WNPAC anomaly and insignificant ICP SAT anomalies are the circumstances for the epoch of low correlation. It is also found that substantial southwesterly wind anomalies over the ICP related to the anomalous WNPAC occur only when large sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies over the northwest Indian Ocean (NWIO) coincide with ENSO (viz., when the ENSO–NWIO SST connection is strong). The NWIO SST anomalies are capable of driving favorable atmospheric circulation that effectively alters ICP SAT and efficiently modulates the ENSO–ICP SAT correlation, which is further supported by numerical simulations utilizing the Community Atmospheric Model, version 4 (CAM4). This paper emphasizes the non-stationarity of the ENSO–ICP SAT relationship and also uncovers the underlying modulation factors, which has important implications for the seasonal prediction of the ICP temperature.

Response of Western North Pacific Anomalous Anticyclones in the Summer of Decaying El Niño to Global Warming: Diverse Projections Based on CMIP6 and CMIP5 Models

AbstractThe anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific (WNPAC) is a key atmospheric bridge through which El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) affects East Asian climate. In this study, the response of the anomalous WNPAC to global warming under the high-emission scenario is investigated based on 40 models from CMIP6 and 30 models from CMIP5. Despite low intermodel consensus, the multimodel median (MMM) of CMIP6 models projects an enhanced anomalous WNPAC but the MMM of CMIP5 models projects a weakened anomalous WNPAC, both of which reach about 0.5 standard deviation of the decadal internal variability derived from the preindustrial control experiment. As consistently projected by CMIP6 and CMIP5 models, the same magnitude of sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) over the tropical Indian Ocean (TIO) stimulates a weaker anomalous WNPAC under a warmer climate, and this mechanism is responsible for the weakened anomalous WNPAC based on the CMIP5 MMM. However, the above mechanism is overwhelmed by another mechanism related to the changes in tropical SSTA based on the CMIP6 MMM. As a result of the enhanced warm SSTA over the TIO and the eastward shift of the warm SSTA over the equatorial Pacific during the decaying El Niño, the warm Kelvin wave emanating from the TIO is enhanced along with the stronger zonal SSTA gradient based on the CMIP6 MMM, enhancing the anomalous WNPAC. The diverse changes in the zonal SSTA gradient between the TIO and the equatorial western Pacific also explain the intermodel diversity of the changes in anomalous WNPAC.

Roles of the North Indian Ocean SST and Tropical North Atlantic SST in the Latitudinal Extension of the Anomalous Western North Pacific Anticyclone during the El Niño Decaying Summer

AbstractThe El Niño–related anomalous western North Pacific anticyclone (WNPAC) shows different latitudinal extensions during the El Niño decaying summer, which determines the moisture transport to different regions and leads to distinct climate impacts over East Asia. It is known that both the north Indian Ocean (NIO) sea surface temperature (SST) and the tropical North Atlantic (TNA) SST can generate a WNPAC in summer. However, the difference between the NIO SST-forced WNPAC and the TNA SST-forced WNPAC has hardly been noted before now. This study shows that the NIO SST warming makes the WNPAC contract southward, whereas the TNA SST warming makes the WNPAC extend northward. The NIO SST warming generates the WNPAC via a Kelvin wave response. Owing to the limited domain of Kelvin wave activity, the Kelvin wave–induced suppressed convection over the western Pacific is confined south of 20°N, resulting in the WNPAC being concentrated in the low latitudes. In contrast, the TNA SST warming generates the WNPAC via a Rossby wave–induced divergence/convergence chain response over the Pacific. The Rossby wave–induced suppressed convection over the central-eastern Pacific north of the equator leads to enhanced convection on its southwest side, which further generates the low-level anomalous divergent winds over the western North Pacific and suppresses convection there. In this process, the suppressed convection over the western North Pacific is pushed more northward, thus producing a WNPAC extending northward. Further study finds that there are good precursors for predicting the WNPAC latitudinal extension based on the El Niño spatial pattern and the NIO/TNA SST intensity in the previous winter and spring.

Impact of Pacific Decadal Oscillation on interannual relationship between El Niño and South China Sea summer monsoon onset

AbstractIn this study, we investigate impact of the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) on the interannual relationship between the El Niño and South China Sea summer monsoon onset (SCSSMO) using observations and community atmosphere model (CAM) simulations. We find that the interannual relationship between El Niño and SCSSMO during 1948–2019 has significant decadal variation, namely, this variation is consistent with PDO phase change. Specifically, a high El Niño‐SCSSMO correlation appears during the positive PDO phase from the mid‐1970s to the mid‐1990s; in contrast, no significant correlation exists during the negative PDO phase from the mid‐1950s to the mid‐1970s and also from the 2000s to the 2010s. Further analyses suggest that the PDO‐related sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) in the western North Pacific (WNP), rather than in the North Pacific, modulate the El Niño‐SCSSMO relationship. The SSTAs in the WNP can prolong the existence of the anomalous WNP anticyclone (WNPAC) from the El Niño mature winter to the following May, and the corresponding western Pacific subtropical high (WPSH) is stronger and extends further westward, thus causing a late SCSSMO during the positive PDO phase. In contrast, the WNPAC disappears and the WPSH withdraws earlier in May during the negative PDO phase, inducing an early onset of the SCSSM. The observed PDO's impact on the interannual relationship between the El Niño and SCSSMO is confirmed by CAM simulations.

The Seasonal Prediction of the Exceptional Yangtze River Rainfall in Summer 2020

During summer 2020, the Yangtze River basin suffered from extreme Meiyu rainfall and catastrophic flooding in June and July. This study explores the seasonal predictability and associated dynamical causes for this extreme Yangtze River rainfall event, based on forecasts from the Met Office GloSea5 operational forecast system. The forecasts successfully predicted above-average rainfall over the Yangtze River basin, which arose from the successful reproduction of the anomalous western North Pacific subtropical high (WNPSH). Our results indicate that both the Indian Ocean warm sea surface temperature (SST) and local WNP SST gradient were responsible for the westward extension of the WNPSH, and the forecasts well captured these tropical signals. We explore extratropical drivers but find a large model spread among the forecast members in the meridional displacements of the East Asian mid-latitude westerly jet (EAJ). The forecast members with an evident southward displacement of the EAJ, favored more extreme Yangtze River rainfall. However, the forecast Yangtze River rainfall anomaly was weaker compared to that observed and no member showed such strong rainfall. In observations, the EAJ displayed an evident acceleration in summer 2020, which could lead to a significant wind convergence in the lower troposphere around the Yangtze River basin, and favor more Meiyu rainfall. The model forecast failed to well reproduce these processes. This difference implies that the observed enhancement of the EAJ intensity gave a large boost to the Yangtze River rainfall, hindering a better forecast of the intensity of the event and disaster mitigation.

Solar activity modulates the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation‐induced precipitation anomalies over southern China in early spring

AbstractThe present study identifies an evident solar cycle modulation upon the spatial pattern of the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) impact on the southern China precipitation in early spring (February–March). During high/low solar activity (HS/LS) years, the significant positive correlation between the wintertime Niño 3.4 index and the precipitation in the following early spring mainly locates at the southeastern China/Yangtze River Valley (SEC/YRV). Our analysis also suggests that the precipitation anomalies show asymmetries between ENSO warm and cold events under both solar phases. In HS years, the ENSO warm events‐related rainfall anomalies over the southern China are weak, but during the ENSO cold events significant dry anomalies appear at the SEC region. In LS years, significant wet anomalies over the YRV region are found during the ENSO warm events, whilst the rainfall anomalies are insignificant for the ENSO cold events. These modulations on precipitation are mediated by the changes in the ENSO‐associated anomalous western North Pacific anticyclone/cyclone, which may be attributed to the solar modulations on the ENSO‐associated sea surface temperature anomalies. Our results highlight that the level of solar activity should be taken into account when ENSO is used as a predictor for the precipitation over East Asia.
