Co-creating the intervention ‘MAMAACT’ for improved care for pregnant migrant women in Denmark

Abstract Background The MAMAACT intervention was developed as a response to documentation of ethnic and social inequities in stillbirth in Denmark, despite free and universal access to antenatal care. The MAMAACT intervention aimed to reduce stillbirth in migrant families by improving communication about pregnancy complication during antenatal care. Methods The intervention consisted of a training program for midwives and health education materials. It was implemented at a structural level (training of midwives) and, through strengthened needs-based communication during antenatal care, the aim was to improve the health literacy of the women. 19 of the 20 Danish maternity wards participated in the study in 2018-19 and a comprehensive evaluation was conducted. The intervention was co-created with midwifery managers, midwives, and migrant women. Results The management and selected clinical midwives participated in the design of the midwifery training and the health education material as well as the intervention’s implementation and recruitment strategies for the evaluation. As representatives of the target group, a partnership with the non-profit organization Bydelsmødre was initiated. Bydelsmødre trains migrant mothers living in socially deprived areas to help vulnerable migrant women. Evening sessions were conducted with a specific group of women in their community, where the intervention components, the recruitment to the evaluation, and the interpretation of evaluation findings were discussed. A significant contribution was a video explaining the migrant experiences of becoming a mother in Denmark used in the midwifery training. MAMAACT researchers were invited to present the evaluation at the annual assembly for Bydelsmødre organization in 2019. Conclusions The partnership with Bydelsmødre provided a strong voice for migrant women, enhancing engagement with the intervention, recruitment for the trial, and its real-world relevance.

Reimagining recipes for food studies:

This perspective is a continuation of a conversation started during “Reimagining Food, Food Systems, and Food Studies,” a plenary session in which we, the authors, participated at the eighteenth annual assembly of the Canadian Association for Food Studies (CAFS). Assessing current opportunities and limitations for food studies in Canada from our perspectives as emerging scholars, the CAFS panel presented our individual and collective proposals for evolving the field. This article builds on the resonances and dissonances from our discussion to craft a provisional “recipe” for reimagining food studies. Recognizing the shortcomings of the format in terms of its prescriptive connotations, we position recipes not as rigid guidelines for achieving predefined outcomes, but as creative models for generating improvisations. We begin with an overview of the ingredients that have come together to create food studies in Canada. Next, we offer some revisions in the margins of this recipe based on the work in which we are engaged as food scholars and practitioners. Finally, we consider next steps for the work of evolving the field, and we invite readers to share in this exchange. Overall, we observe and participate in an unfinished trajectory that extends from previous questions on why food studies should exist and what food studies is, to consider more deeply how food studies could be done.

Prostate cancer screening in Switzerland: a literature review and consensus statement from the Swiss Society of Urology.

Over a decade ago, the United States Preventive Services Taskforce (USPSTF) recommended against prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-based screening for prostate cancer in all men, which considerably influenced prostate cancer screening policies worldwide after that. Consequently, the world has seen increasing numbers of advanced stages and prostate cancer deaths, which later led the USPSTF to withdraw its initial statement. Meanwhile, the European Union has elaborated a directive to address the problem of implementing prostate cancer screening in "Europe's Beating Cancer Plan". In Switzerland, concerned urologists formed an open Swiss Prostate Cancer Screening Group to improve the early detection of prostate cancer. On the 20thof September 2023, during the annual general assembly of the Swiss Society of Urology (SGU/SSU) in Lausanne, members positively voted for a stepwise approach to evaluate the feasibility of implementing organised prostate cancer screening programs in Switzerland. The following article will summarise the events and scientific advances in the last decade during which evidence and promising additional modalities to complement PSA-based prostate cancer screening have emerged. It also aims to provide an overview of contemporary strategies and their potential harms and benefits.

Neurohormonal Activation and Renal Chloride Avidity in Acute Heart Failure: Clinical Evidence Supporting the “Chloride Theory”

Introduction: Heart failure (HF) progression according to changes in the serum chloride concentration ([sCl−]) was recently proposed as the “chloride (Cl) theory” for HF pathophysiology. The present study examined the association of neurohormones and renal Cl avidity to determine their contribution to acute HF and their involvement to the “Cl theory.” Methods: Data from 29 patients with acute HF (48% men; 80.3 ± 12 years) were analyzed. Blood and urine samples were obtained before decongestive therapy. Clinical tests included peripheral blood, serum and spot urinary electrolytes, b-type natriuretic peptide (BNP), and plasma neurohormones. Results: In the 29 patients, urinary Cl concentrations ([uCl−]) inversely correlated with log (plasma renin activity [PRA]) (r = −0.64, p = 0.0002) and log (plasma aldosterone concentration) (r = −0.50, p = 0.006). The [sCl−]‒[uCl−] difference positively correlated with log PRA (r = 0.63, p = 0.0002) and log (plasma aldosterone concentration) (r = 0.49, p = 0.008). Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the [sCl−]‒[uCl−] difference, an excretion (low renal Cl avidity) group and an absorption (high renal Cl avidity) group. Compared with the excretion group (−77 to ‒5 mEq/L; n = 14), the absorption group (1–84 mEq/L; n = 15) exhibited greater renal impairment (serum creatinine; 1.45 ± 0.63 vs. 1.00 ± 0.38 mg/d, p = 0.029) and cardiac burden (log BNP; 2.99 ± 0.3 vs. 2.66 ± 0.32 pg/mL, p = 0.008), higher log PRA (0.20 ± 0.58 vs. −0.25 ± 0.35 ng/mL/h, p = 0.018), and lower fractional urinary Cl excretion (1.34 ± 1.3 vs. 5.33 ± 4.1%, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Renal Cl avidity differs in acute HF, i.e., excretion (low renal Cl avidity) versus absorption (high renal Cl avidity) types, involving renin-aldosterone-angiotensin activity as the underlying mechanism, which provides the neurohormonal background for the “Cl theory.” A version of this study was presented in part at the annual international scientific assembly (ACC.23) of the American College of Cardiology, March 4–6, 2023.

Reforming the Established Church: History and Proposals

AbstractWhile the term ‘establishment’ is ambiguous, it generally refers to a formal relationship between a church and the state in which it operates. This can range from parliamentary representation (as with the Church of England) to mere observance by the monarch (as at the Church of Scotland's annual General Assembly). Since the 1960s there have been proposals regarding Crown appointments and the number and status of the Lords Spiritual. There exists no major push for full disestablishment of the Church of England, but a bill is currently before Parliament.

Staging Sin in Medieval Paris

The major source of knowledge of French miracle plays is the Cangé manuscript, which features forty Miracles de Nostre Dame par personnages. All the plays in the manuscript are arranged in chronological order from 1339 to 1382. They were written and produced for the St. Eloy chapter of the gold and silversmiths guild of Paris and performed at the guild’s annual assembly on or around St. Eloy’s Day (December 1). This address analyses a cluster of seven plays composed for performance between 1368 and 1379. All seven plays place the conflict between saints and sinners on the medieval stage by juxtaposing a falsely accused heroine with an antagonist whose deeds reveal the Seven Deadly Sins. Central to each of the plays is the miraculous intervention of the Virgin Mary, to whom the innocent woman prays for deliverance from her tormentors. Mary’s descent and presence on stage dramatically demonstrate her role as intercessor in the struggle between good and evil.

“Valeu a pena?” An assessment of Vale's operations in Mozambique through the prism of the International Articulation of those Affected by Vale

In this paper, we offer an assessment of almost 20 years of Vale's operation in Mozambique through the lenses of the International Articulation of those Affected by Vale (IAAV). Based on literature review, documental analysis, fieldwork, and participatory research, we analyzed IAAV's main repertoires of action: international meetings and caravans, the “Unsustainability Reports” and the annual interventions in the company's annual shareholders assembly. We argue that IAAV is an unprecedented experience of articulation among civil society organizations and social movements to monitor and confront a corporation from the “global South”. Our case shed light to the role played by social movements and NGOs as political translators. International diffusion is not taken as an automatic and mechanic process, but as a multi-actor process that involves a hard, contingent, and powerful political work of building cross-border alliances. It requires a permanent work of perception alignment, (re)interpretation, and translation, which must be more investigated. The interactions between Brazilian and Mozambicans organizations since 2010 reinforced similarities of local realities in both countries; created common interests and objectives; fostered the exchange of ideas and knowledge; produced several research outputs, reports, and campaigns; and boosted other spaces of cooperation and solidarity.

Can transparency strengthen the legitimacy of international institutions? Evidence from the UN Security Council

Can transparency enhance the legitimacy of international institutions? As transparency has become a widely applied procedural standard in international politics, a range of institutions have implemented transparency reforms under the presumption that increased transparency can elicit support among relevant audiences. This article evaluates whether increased transparency in the UN Security Council leads to enhanced legitimacy perceptions among UN member-states. The article first traces the history of Security Council reform since 1990 and draws on interviews with diplomats and observers to describe a transparency reform the Council enacted in 2006. Next, the article uses longitudinal content analysis to empirically probe the legitimation effects of that transparency reform. The empirical analysis is based on an original dataset of 4,303 legitimacy statements made by UN member-states in annual UN General Assembly debates over the periods 1990–2006 and 2006–18. The findings cast doubt over the potential of transparency reform to improve the Council’s legitimacy; instead they suggest that increasing the direct participation of the wider UN membership may be a more viable legitimation strategy. This article contributes to existing international legitimacy literature by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between transparency and legitimacy, and by demonstrating which institutional features that affect the perceived legitimacy of the Security Council.

IMPLEMENTASI NILAI-NILAI PENDIDIKAN MULTIKULTURAL DALAM KEGIATAN KHUTBATUL IFTITAH

Multicultural education is education that helps students to develop the ability to recognize, accept, appreciate and celebrate cultural diversity. At the Wali Songo Ngabar Islamic Boarding School, these multicultural values are manifested through the annual assembly activities within the framework of the santri introduction week. The purpose of this study is to identify the supporting factors for multicultural activities that are going well. This study uses a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. Collecting data in this study was carried out by interviews, observation, and documentation. This research was conducted through 3 stages namely observation, data analysis, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study found several things which were summarized into 3 important points supporting factors for best practice multicultural education at the Wali Songo Ngabar Islamic Boarding School, Ponorogo, namely (1) Awareness of differences; (2) Harmony and peace; (3) Motivation. These supporting factors need to be maintained so that other multicultural activities can be implemented better

Sagas in Time and Time in the Sagas: an Attempt at a Historiographical Review

This article is devoted to the perception of time in early Iceland (from the establishment in 930 of the Althing, an annual national assembly, to the submission of the Icelanders to the Norwegian king in 1262—1264). This is not, however, a result of my work with medieval sources (first of all, Icelandic sagas and historical writings) but an attempt to present an overview of this issue in the assessment of international historiography, mainly of the last fifty years, but with a significant emphasis on the 2020s. If by 2017, as noted in the scholarly literature, very little had been published on time in medieval literature in general, and in the sagas in particular, in the last few years three monographic studies have been published that deserve attention and evaluation. The article is divided into two parts. The first one contains a description of general trends and methods of studying time in the works of Old Norse literature, while the second one presents the analysis of three recent works, thematic and methodological intersections in which are an obvious consequence not of interdependence, but of the general situation in the study of this issue.

Regionalized chemical footprint method to identify aquatic ecotoxicity hotspots of hard disk drive rare-earth magnets.

The chemical footprint (ChF), which combines life cycle assessment (LCA) and quantitative risk assessment principles, shows promise for exploring localized toxicity impacts of manufacturing processes, which is not achievable with LCA alone. An updated ChF method was applied to the global annual production of a hard disk drive (HDD) rare-earth element (REE) magnet assembly, assuming a supply chain in East and Southeast Asia. Existing REE magnet assembly LCA inventories were combined with supplier manufacturing locations to create a cradle-to-gate spatial unit process inventory. Emissions from the electricity grid for each manufacturing site were downscaled to hydrobasins of interest using the Global Power Plant Database. The predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) was chosen as the ecotoxicity pollution boundary to determine the threshold for dilution of each chemical of concern (CoC) and to calculate the ChF. Finally, a high-resolution hydrological database provided volumes of the freshwater river reach draining each hydrobasin and was used to calculate the dilution capacity (DC), that is, the volume required to remain at or below the PNEC for each CoC. The total ChF of annual REE magnet assembly production was 6.91E12 m3 , with hotspots in watersheds in China and Thailand where REEs are processed and steel metalworking takes place. Metals were the primary CoCs, with cadmium and chromium(VI) comprising 77% of total ChF. Dilution factors ranged from 5E-09 to 9E + 03 of the DC of the waterbody, reflecting the spatial variability in both emissions and DC. An advanced ChF method was demonstrated for HDD REE magnets. Scoping is a key step required to reduce model complexity. The use of regionalized fate factors and standardized hydrological data sets improves the comparability of ChFs across hydrobasins. Additional work to combine data sets into readily available tools is needed to increase usability and standardization of the ChF method and promote wider adoption. Marriage preparation education and training for prospective married couples also have been known in Indonesia as marriage preparation training courses (KPP). Like the other parishes in every diocese all over the world, St. Joseph Parish of Onekore Ende which belong to the vicariate pastoral ministry area of Ende, and the Archdiocese of Ende cares and pays more attention to the needs of parish community members who are planning to build a family up for living together as husband and wife. So, responding to the needs of these prospective couples and based on the pastoral activity planning that has been designed in an annual plenary pastoral assembly, the Parish Pastoral Council, through the Family Pastoral Section of the Parish, carries out an educational and training program for the premarital marriage preparation activities under the coordination of the Parish Pastor and his fellow co-pastor. The facilitators use the acronym term PMPET in this article. PMPET is shortened from Premarital Marriage Preparation Education and Training. The purpose is to know whether PMPET as an approach and model be able to enhance the knowledge and skill of the participants about the nature of marriage which is discussed from various perspectives or points of view.
