Further records and descriptions of the plant bug subfamily Phylinae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae) from Thailand.

Eleven new species of the plant bug subfamily Phylinae are described: Campylomma koraticola, C. nanna, C. pimai, C. salaciella, Cleotomiris levigatus, Cl. sakaeratensis, Cl. similissimus, Decomia anthophila, Malaysiamiris nigrescens, Rubrocuneocoris anandros and Sejanus adustopaca. In addition, Campylomma chitwanensis, which described originally from southeastern Nepal, is confirmed in Thailand and diagnosed, and the female is documented for the first time as well. Photographic images of live individuals are figured for most new species, and those for C. chitwanensis and Decomia taksini are presented for the first time. An annotated checklist of all currently known taxa including new distributional records, also from neighboring Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, is provided. Some additional photographic images are also presented for little known taxa. The genus Artchawakomius Yasunaga of the tribe Hallodapini is proposed to place in Leucophoropterini. And furthermore, a Chinese species, Rubrocuneocoris lanceus Li & Liu, is transferred to Atractotomoidea Yasunaga.

An annotated checklist of the vascular plants of Sundarban Mangrove Forest of Bangladesh

The study revealed the occurrence of 528 species of vascular plants belonging to 356 genera and 111 families in the Sundarban Mangrove Forest of Bangladesh. Among these species, 24 were pteridophytes and the rest were angiosperms, of which only 24 were true mangroves and 70 were mangrove associates. Magnoliopsida and Liliopsida were represented by 373 and 131 species, respectively. These species belonged to 345 herbs, 89 shrubs and 94 trees. Sixty-four species were climbers, 14 were epiphytes, 6 were parasites, and 7 were palms. The species number per family varied from 1 to 42. In pteridophytes, Pteridaceae with 4 genera and 5 species was the largest family. In angiosperms, Fabaceae with 24 genera and 42 species and Poaceae with 27 genera and 42 species were the largest families, respectively, in Magnoliopsida and Liliopsida. Most of the species included in this checklist were found in oligohaline zone, Sarankhola range and the forest margins, and recognized as economically important. ERIOCAULON L. from Brazil: An annotated checklist and taxonomic novelties

Eriocaulonis an aquatic and cosmopolitan genus with 478 species. It is characterized by diplostemonous flowers and free petals with a black gland at the apex. There are few taxonomists studying Eriocaulon from Brazil. The species of this genus remain barely delimited, with inconsistent descriptions, and nomenclatural types not assigned or located. The analysis of nomenclatural types, specimens in scientific collections, and protologues enabled the recognition of 53 species of Eriocaulonfrom Brazil. Thirteen new synonyms and the elevation of five varietes to species level are proposed. Comments on taxonomy, geographic distribution, habitat, life form, and conservation category are provided.

A new species of the genus Acria Stephens, 1834 (Lepidoptera: Depressariidae: Acriinae) from India

A new species, Acria meyricki sp. nov. (Lepidoptera: Depressariidae: Acriinae) occurring on oil palm, is described from India. The status and nomenclature of the genus is reviewed and an annotated checklist of species is given. A key to the seven species known so far from the Indian subcontinent is provided.

Summary. Preliminary checklist of bees from St. Barthelemy (French West Indies) and their relations with visited flowers (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Megachilidae, Apidae). An annotated checklist of bees (Hymenoptera: Apoidea: Anthophila), excluding Halictidae, is compiled for St Barthelemy, an island located in the Lesser Antilles of the eastern Caribbean. The list has eight species, including three exotic species to the Caribbean, four others known only from the Caribbean and three that occur both on mainland and the West Indies. The list is constituted with data from literature and from our field researches carried out by Karl Questel between 2006 and 2013. A list of visited flowers, along with ecological notes for each species is also given.

Additions to the oppioid oribatid mite fauna of Brazil, with description of two new species (Acari: Oribatida: Oppioidea)

AbstractAn annotated checklist of identified Brazilian Oppioidea is provided; it includes 14 species, eight genera and two families. Five species - Teratoppia (Teratoppiella) brevipectinata, Ramusella (Ramusella) curtipilus, Striatoppia opuntiseta, Moritzoppia (Moritzoppia) keilbachi and Multioppia (Hammeroppia) gracilis - are recorded for the first time in Brazil; of these, M. (Moritzoppia) keilbachi and M. (Hammeroppia) gracilis are recorded from the Neotropical region for the first time. Two new species, Teratoppia (Teratoppia) parareducta sp. n. and Brachioppia insolita sp. n., are described and illustrated on the basis of adult specimens. Teratoppia (T.) parareducta sp. n. is most similar to T. (T.) reducta Balogh & Mahunka, 1969, but it differs from the latter by the position of adanal lyrifissures, length of rostral setae and lamellar setae and morphology and length of notogastral setae. Brachioppia insolita sp. n. differs from other species of the genus by the position of adanal lyrifissures and shape of anterior notogastral margin.

Revised and annotated checklist of aquatic and semi-aquatic Heteroptera of Hungary with comments on biodiversity patterns.

A basic knowledge of regional faunas is necessary to follow the changes in macroinvertebrate communities caused by environmental influences and climatic trends in the future. We collected all the available data on water bugs in Hungary using an inventory method, a UTM grid based database was built, and Jackknife richness estimates and species accumulation curves were calculated. Fauna compositions were compared among Central-European states. As a result, an updated and annotated checklist for Hungary is provided, containing 58 species in 21 genera and 12 families. A total 66.8% of the total UTM 10 × 10 km squares in Hungary possess faunistic data for water bugs. The species number in grid cells numbered from 0 to 42, and their diversity patterns showed heterogeneity. The estimated species number of 58 is equal to the actual number of species known from the country. The asymptotic shape of the accumulative species curve predicts that additional sampling efforts will not increase the number of species currently known from Hungary. These results suggest that the number of species in the country was estimated correctly and that the species accumulation curve levels off at an asymptotic value. Thus a considerable increase in species richness is not expected in the future. Even with the species composition changing the chance of species turn-over does exist. Overall, 36.7% of the European water bug species were found in Hungary. The differences in faunal composition between Hungary and its surrounding countries were caused by the rare or unique species, whereas 33 species are common in the faunas of the eight countries. Species richness does show a correlation with latitude, and similar species compositions were observed in the countries along the same latitude. The species list and the UTM-based database are now up-to-date for Hungary, and it will provide a basis for future studies of distributional and biodiversity patterns, biogeography, relative abundance and frequency of occurrences important in community ecology, or the determination of conservation status.

Taxonomy and Phylogeny of the North American Leafhopper Genus Cuerna (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae)

ABSTRACT The taxonomy and phylogeny of Cuerna, a widespread North American leafhopper genus, were examined. Eight species (C. cuesta, C. inflata, C. lugens, C. nielsoni, C. pseudoalba, C. reducta, C. septentrionalis, and C. xyla) are synonymized and three new species (C. emeljanovi, C. lyrifora, and C. oaxacensis) are described, making a total of 26 species in the genus. An annotated checklist with distribution records, brief descriptions, and details on intraspecific morphological variation and separate dichotomous keys to males and females of Cuerna are provided. In addition, a web-based interactive key to species is made available online using 3I software. Four species groups are recognized based on morphology, but only three of them are recovered as monophyletic, with minimal or no node support, in phylogenetic analysis of the morphological data set of 21 characters. Peruvian oribatid mites (Acari, Oribatida) from the German Biological Expedition, with description of a new species of the genus Pergalumna

The present study is based on oribatid mite material (Acari, Oribatida) collected during the German Expedition in 2011 in Peru. An annotated checklist of identified oribatid mites, including 16 species from 14 genera and 8 families, is provided. Thirteen species and two genera (Notohermannia, Zetomimus) are recorded for the first time in Peru; the genus Notohermannia and species Notohermannia obtusa are recorded for the first time in the Neotropical region. A new species of the genus Pergalumna (Galumnidae), Pergalumna paraboliviana sp. n., is described. The new species is most similar to Pergalumna boliviana Ermilov, 2013 from Bolivia, however, it differs from the latter by the body size, morphology of porose areas A1 and the presence of interlamellar setae.

An annotated checklist of the orchids of Western Himalaya, India

A checklist of the Orchidaceae of Western Himalaya is presented based on recent orchid explorations and herbarium collections. This checklist comprised of 239 taxa of orchids belonging to 72 genera. Of these, 130 are terrestrial, 13 mycoheterotrophic and 96 epiphytic. Thirteen (13) species are endemic to Western Himalaya. The best represented genus is Dendrobium, with 16 species followed by Habenaria with 14 species and Bulbophyllum with 12 species. In this checklist habit, habitat, phenology, elevational range of distribution etc. are provided.

An annotated checklist of mammals of the Lake Meredith National Recreation Area, Texas, USA

Mammals of Lake Meredith National Recreation Area (Hutchinson, Moore and Potter counties, Texas) were surveyed between March 2002 and October 2003 as a part of the larger inventory of vertebrate animals of this protected area. Both Sherman and Tomahawk traps were used to catch small and medium-size mammals (for a total 330 trap-nights). Pit-fall traps, gopher live traps, Trailmaster™ cameras, mist-nets (for bats), and spotlight surveys were also utilized. The study detected 29 (72.5%) of the 39 mammalian species previously confirmed for Lake Meredith, and provided confirmed records for four other species (Cryptotis parva, Notiosorex crawfordi, Dasypus novemcinctus, and Sciurus niger). Four additional species were recorded in the adjacent area. This manuscript compares the 2002–2003 study with the three mammal inventories previously undertaken in the area (Blair 1954; Killebrew 1979; Yancey et al. 1998).

Review of the Leafhopper GenusPhlogotettixRibaut (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae) with Description of a New Species from India

The leafhopper genus Phlogotettix Ribaut (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae: Deltocephalinae) is reviewed, and to the 10 species known so far, one new species Phlogotettix subhimalayanus sp. nov. is added and described. The latter has been analyzed for its mtCOI. Phlogotettix indicus Rao is redescribed. An annotated checklist and key to the species is also provided.

The butterfly fauna of the Italian Maritime Alps: results of the EDIT project

The Valdieri area (Italian Maritime Alps) has long been known for harbouring a large variety of Mediterranean and Alpine elements, often occurring together in an intricate pattern of co-habitations that is practically without equal elsewhere in the Alps. The area has been designated as a Site of Communitarian Interest (SCI: “Argentera” IT1110053), has been listed among the 32 “Prime Butterfly Areas” occurring in Italy and is now considered a priority site for conservation. A large number of amateur and professional entomologists alike have visited the area over the years, generating a mass of information on the Valdierian butterflies. We carefully searched the “grey” literature for data on the butterflies and the burnet moths occurring in this area. Since the second half of the 19th Century, almost 100 papers and books have been dedicated, in whole or in part, to the description of this fauna, which currently includes many as 161 species. We sampled butterflies in 2008–2009 and found one previously unreported species. Here we provide an annotated checklist of the butterfly and burnet moth species occurring in the area, including comments on their ecology and distribution, as well as a complete list of the publications dealing with them.

An annotated checklist of the jumping plant-lice (Insecta: Hemiptera: Psylloidea) from the Mercantour National Park, with seven new records for France and one new Synonymy

A total of 68 psyllid species are listed from the Mercantour National Park in Southeast France, where a targeted collecting campaign was conducted between 2009 and 2012, as part of the project “ATBI M” Mercantour. The insects were collected using Malaise traps, flight intercept traps and sweep nets to sample in the vegetation. Additional information on distribution, biology and host-plants is provided for each species. Seven species are recorded for the first time from France: Craspedolepta artemisiae (Foerster, 1848), Craspedolepta nebulosa (Zetterstedt, 1828), Cacopsylla propinqua (Schaefer, 1949), Cyamophila prohaskai (Priesner, 1927), Eryngiofaga cf. refuga (Loginova, 1966), Bactericera parastriola Conci, Ossiannilsson & Tamanini, 1988 and Trioza flixiana Burckhardt & Lauterer, 2002. Trioza (Trioza) rapisardai Conci & Tamanini, 1984 is a new subjective synonym of Trioza brachyceraea Hodkinson & White, 1979, which was previously known only from the male holotype. The abundance, distribution and introduction status of some species are discussed.

Annotated checklist of the spiders (Arachnida, Araneae) of the Site of Community Importance and Special Area of Conservation “Alpi Marittime” (NW Italy)

ABSTRACT We present an annotated checklist of the spiders (Arachnida Cuvier, 1812; Araneae Clerck, 1757) of the Site of Community Importance and Special Area of Conservation IT1160056 “Alpi Marittime” (NW Italy). The checklist is based on literature records and unpublished material collected from 2007 to 2013 within the first European All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory coordinated by the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy (EDIT). The examination of the literature provided a list of 113 species recorded for the study area between 1890 and 2013, scattered in 35 publications. The new data provided here raise the total number of species known for the study area to 295, grouped in 147 genera and 31 families. We recorded a remarkable percentage (9%) of endemic species, including rare endemic elements poorly known in literature, such as Vesubia jugorum (Simon, 1881); Troglohyphantes konradi Brignoli, 1975; Nesticus morisii Brignoli, 1975 and Turinyphia clairi (Simon, 1884). <strong>Additions to the “Annotated Checklist of the Ticks of Germany”: <em>Ixodes acuminatus</em> and <em>Ixodes inopinatus</em>.</strong>

Since the publication of “An annotated checklist of the ticks of Germany” in 2012, the list now includes two additional ixodid species. Ixodes acuminatus is endemic in several countries bordering Germany. Sufficient specimens have now been found in southwestern Germany to show that this species is also native there. The other species, Ixodes inopinatus, has its main area of distribution in the western Mediterranean, and it is not yet clear whether the two females and one male found in Rhineland-Palatinate were accidental introductions or are part of a viable population.

First species of Leptochelia Dana, 1849 (Crustacea: Tanaidacea) from the Eastern Pacific, with an annotated checklist and identification keys for the genus.

Forty three species of leptocheliids are known worldwide. In the American region only eight species have been described from the Western Atlantic, while for the Eastern Pacific none have been described, suggesting that the diversity of this family has been severely underestimated in this region. Here we describe the first species of Leptochelia from the Eastern Pacific, Leptochelia mexicana n. sp., which is characterized by the males having a spiniform seta on the second segment of uropodal endopod, a novel feature for the genus. In addition, the first annotated checklist and a taxonomic key with illustrations for Leptochelia species are included. The list includes the type locality, type depository, distribution, habitat and, in some cases, remarks.

Adaptive morpho-traits, taxonomy and biogeography of Metania Gray, 1867 (Porifera: Spongillina: Metaniidae) with the description of a new species from Madagascar.

A comparative analysis of gemmular architecture adaptive morpho-traits at family level is reported for Metaniidae together with the discovery and description of a new species from the River Mangoky (High Plateau), Madagascar. The new Malagasy species, ascribed to Metania for diagnostic traits of the skeleton and the gemmular architecture, differs from all the other known species of the genus in its unique combination of diagnostic traits. Metania madagascariensis sp. nov. is characterised by encrusting growth form, conulose surface, specialized ectosomal skeleton, alveolate-reticulate choanosomal skeleton, two types of megascleres as smooth oxeas (α) and acanthoxeas (β) ornamented with spines and/or tubercles, one type of microsclere as acanthoxeas with dense spines/tubercles bearing rosettes of microspines at tips; gemmules with or without cage of megascleres and frequently surrounded by microscleres; gemmular theca trilayered with pneumatic layer of fibrous spongin, boletiform (trumpet-like) gemmuloscleres with proximal true rotule large, smooth and with irregular blunt margins, and distal knob-like pseudorotule notably smaller, with a few hooks at the margins. M. madagascariensis belongs to the Afrotropical species group of Metania. Identification keys and an annotated checklist at global level are also provided together with a species-level discussion of Metania focusing on morphology, taxonomy, nomenclature and biogeography.

An annotated checklist of the large carpenter bees, genus Xylocopa Latreille (Hymenoptera: Apidae), from the Philippine Islands

An annotated checklist is presented for the 37 valid species-level taxa of the genus Xylocopa Latreille (Hymenoptera: Apidae) recorded from the Philippine Islands. A key is provided to the four subgenera of Xylocopa represented in the Philippine fauna: Xylocopa subgenus Biluna Maa, Xylocopa subgenus Koptortosoma Gribodo, Xylocopa subgenus Platynopoda Westwood and Xylocopa subgenus Zonohirsuta Maa. For each species and subspecies, the following information is provided: original combination, type locality, available information about primary types, a list of synonyms described from the Philippines, a brief synopsis of the principal external diagnostic features and a summary of the known geographic distribution of the species in the Philippine Islands.

Contribution to the knowledge of seed-beetles (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae, Bruchinae) in Xinjiang, China.

Nineteen species of seed-beetles belonging to the subfamily Bruchinae (Coleoptera, Chrysomelidae) were collected in Xinjiang, China. Of these, the following four were new records for China: Bruchus affinis Frolich, 1799, Bruchus atomarius L., 1761, Bruchus loti Paykull, 1800 and Kytorhinus kergoati Delobel & Legalov, 2009. We provide an annotated checklist, illustrations and a key to the 19 species.
