The interest in the personality and legacy of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov is undiminished. The different poles of his artistic ideas seem to urgently require an ever deeper interpretation, a modern approach, going beyond what has been studied. On a timeless scale, the legacy and the ever-expanding influence of the master’s music, his “dialogues” with composers of the past and with contemporaries, the innovative principles of N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov’s thinking, his “unknown” memoirs (Chronicle), the tempting questions of symbols and topoi, stylistic allusions in the composer’s music, the reception of his works, philosophical and religious foundations, mytho-poetics and much more are being studied. The volume of research is quite large, and the collective works occupy an important place in it, including N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov. Saint Petersburg, 2016. The author of this article, who has been studying the materials and manuscripts of Rimsky-Korsakov’s students A. K. Lyadov, M. M. Ippolitov- Ivanov, and the composer of the Saint Petersburg school G. N. Popov for many years, summarises some questions accumulated by the modern knowledge about the composer, focusing on the topic “N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov and His Followers”.
