The peripheral arterial disease of the legs is the consequence of atherosclerosis located under the bifurcation of abdominal aorta. In early stages (without symptoms), the prevalence of disease can only be estimated. The diabetic patient is more exposed to the risk; insensate feet due to diabetic peripheral neuropathy may delay the time of diagnosis and significantly increases the risk of ulcers and amputation. In the presence of risk factors, clinical data and ankle brachial pressure index can confirm diagnosis in early stages. Ankle brachial pressure index measurement and calculation can be performed in family medicine practice in 15 minutes; the technique is simple and the equipment affordable. Early diagnosis allows a conservative treatment, with long-term good results and a significantly reduction of amputations. Quality of life of diabetic patients depends on the precocity of diagnosis.
