Sensitive Voltammetric Detection of Acetaminophen on CuONPs-MWCNTs Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode with Enhancement Effect of Anionic Surfactant

In the present work, a voltammetric method using differential pulse voltammetric technique for the assessment of antipyretic and analgesic drug, acetaminophen was developed. The CuO nanoparticles were prepared and characterized. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) fabricated with the suspension of CuO nanoparticles (CuONPs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used. The modified electrode showed improved anodic peak current by introducing an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate in phosphate buffer solution. The consequence of pH of supporting electrolyte, amount of nanoparticles suspension and surfactant concentration was investigated at a physiological pH of 7.4. Using differential pulse voltammetry, the fabricated electrode showed linear dynamic range from 9 to 160 nM of acetaminophen concentration. From the calibration plot, the computed detection limit was 5.06 nM and quantification limit was 16.88 nM. The developed method was checked for its reproducibility and assay during a day and intraday as well. The developed process was fruitfully applied to detect acetaminophen in pediatric oral suspensions administered to infants.

Influence of Surfactant on the Skin Permeation of Methylisothiazolinone and Methylchloroisothiazolinone.

Patch tests are often used in safety evaluations to identify the substance causing skin irritation, but the same substance can sometimes give positive or negative results depending on the test conditions. Here, we investigated differences in the skin penetration of two test compounds under different application conditions. We studied the effects of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the nonionic surfactant polysorbate 80 (PS) on skin penetration of the preservatives methylisothiazolinone (MT) and methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCT), which are used in cosmetics such as shampoos. The skin permeation of MT was enhanced by SDS but was unchanged by PS. Skin impedance decreased in the presence of SDS whereas PS had the same effect as the control aqueous solution, suggesting that SDS reduction of the barrier function of skin affects the permeation of MT, a hydrophilic drug. Application of a mixture of MCT and MT in the presence of SDS did not affect the skin permeation of MCT whereas the permeation of MT was enhanced by SDS, indicating that the skin permeation of MCT is less affected by SDS than is MT. Thus, attention should be paid to the possible effect of co-solutes, especially hydrophilic drugs.

Synergistic effects of nonionic surfactants ethoxylated alkylamines and sodium dodecyl sulfate in mixed systems

HypothesisIn general, the performance of surfactant hybrid systems is better than that of single surfactants, so surfactant hybrid systems are widely used in various industries. As a very important class of nonionic surfactants, ethoxylated alkylamines have been widely used in industries such as washing, coating, and pesticide, but little research has been conducted on their mixed systems. In order to improve the utilization efficiency of surfactants and reduce wastage, the surface properties and aggregation behavior of ethoxylated alkylamine mixed systems should be further explored. ExperimentIn this study, the nonionic surfactant ethoxylated dodecylamine (AC-1202) and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were used to form a mixed system. The static surface tension and interaction parameters of the mixed system under the influence of inorganic salt ions were investigated using a KRÜSS K12 surface tensiometer. The diffusion process of the mixed system was investigated using a KRÜSS bubble pressure tensiometer. At the same time, the aggregate behavior of the mixed system was studied by particle size analyzer. In addition, the contact angle and rheological properties of the mixed solution were also investigated. FindingsThe SDS/AC-1202 mixture system formed a synergistic effect that could reduce the CMC value to 24.20 mN/m and the CMC value was as low as 22.89 mN/m after the addition of inorganic salts. The mixed system conforms to the kinetic mechanism of mixing and diffusion and the Ostwald de model for non-Newtonian fluids. Finally, there is a good aggregation pattern in the mixed system, and the stronger synergistic effect will lead to the reduction of the average particle size of the mixture to 45.41 nm.

Interfacial and ion-pairing catalysis for oxygen-tolerant large-scale ATRP in ab initio emulsion

A cooperative interfacial and ion-pairing catalysis, coupled with a molecular oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), to scale up an Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization of n-butyl acrylate (BA) from 20 mL to 10 L (scale-up factor = 500) in ab initio emulsion conditions is introduced. The polymerization is driven by the regeneration of [CuIL]+ through CuII/Cu0 comproportionation. [CuIL]+ simultaneously converts O2 to H2O2 (which is then degraded by sodium pyruvate) and drives the polymerization of butyl acrylate. The anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) facilitates catalyst transport inside and outside the micelles by ion-pairing catalysis. n-Butyl acrylate polymerizations are investigated on a small scale with Cu0 wire and on a larger scale with Cu0 powder. On a 10 L scale, the polymerization yielded controlled PBA-Br (Mn = 32.3 × 103; Ð = 1.39, ∼1.64 kg) after 9 h. Chain extension of PBA-Br macroinitiators proved their livingness. An on-line electrochemical monitoring was also introduced to determine the instantaneous CuI and CuII concentrations at the Cu0 wire surface during the polymerization.

Modulating protein unfolding and refolding via the synergistic association of an anionic and a nonionic surfactant

HypothesisNonionic surfactants can counter the deleterious effect that anionic surfactants have on proteins, where the folded state are retrieved from a previously unfolded state. However, further studies are required to refine our understanding of the underlying mechanism of the refolding process. While interactions between nonionic surfactants and tightly folded proteins are not anticipated, we hypothesized that intermediate stages of surfactant-induced unfolding could define new interaction mechanisms by which nonionic surfactants can further alter protein conformation. ExperimentsIn this work, the behavior of three model proteins (human growth hormone, bovine serum albumin, and β-lactoglobulin) was investigated in the presence of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate, the nonionic surfactant β-dodecylmaltoside, and mixtures of both surfactants. The transitions occurring to the proteins were determined using intrinsic fluorescence spectroscopy and far-UV circular dichroism. Based on these results, we have developed a detailed interaction model for human growth hormone. Using nuclear magnetic resonance and contrast-variation small-angle neutron scattering, we studied the amino acid environment and the conformational state of the protein. FindingsThe results demonstrate the key role of surfactant cooperation in defining the conformational state of the protein, which can shift away or toward the folded state depending on the nonionic-to-ionic surfactant ratio. Dodecylmaltoside, initially a non-interacting surfactant, can unexpectedly associate with sodium dodecylsulfate-unfolded proteins to further impact the structure of the protein at low nonionic-to-ionic surfactant ratio. When this ratio increases, the protein begins to retrieve a folded state. However, the native conformation cannot be fully recovered due to remnant surfactant molecules still adsorbed to the protein. This study demonstrates that the conformational landscape of the protein depends on a delicate interplay between the surfactants, ultimately controlled by the ratio between them, resulting in unpredictable changes in the protein conformation.

Boundary Lubrication Performance of Polyelectrolyte-Surfactant Complexes on Biomimetic Surfaces.

Aqueous mixtures of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes and surfactants are useful in many industrial applications, such as shampoos and hair conditioners. In this work, we investigate the friction between biomimetic hair surfaces in the presence of adsorbed complexes formed from cationic polyelectrolytes and anionic surfactants in an aqueous solution. We apply nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations using the coarse-grained MARTINI model. We first developed new MARTINI parameters for cationic guar gum (CGG), a functionalized, plant-derived polysaccharide. The complexation of CGG and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) on virgin and chemically damaged biomimetic hair surfaces was studied using a sequential adsorption approach. We then carried out squeeze-out and sliding NEMD simulations to assess the boundary lubrication performance of the CGG-SDS complex compressed between two hair surfaces. At low pressure, we observe a synergistic friction behavior for the CGG-SDS complex, which gives lower shear stress than either pure CGG or SDS. Here, friction is dominated by viscous dissipation in an interfacial layer comprising SDS and water. At higher pressures, which are probably beyond those usually experienced during hair manipulation, SDS and water are squeezed out, and friction increases due to interdigitation. The outcomes of this work are expected to be beneficial to fine-tune and screen sustainable hair care formulations to provide low friction and therefore a smooth feel and reduced entanglement.

Protolytic properties of methyl yellow both in water-ethanol medium and in hardened gelatin gel with the presence of sodium dodecylsulphate and tetrabutylammonium chloride

This paper presents the results of studying the acid-base properties of the indicator dye methyl yellow in water–ethanol solutions with a volume fraction of alcohol of 10 % and 50 %. The influence of the addition of NaCl salts and tetrabutylammonium chloride, as well as the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) on the acidity constant of the indicator, was evaluated. Under the chosen conditions, ethanol additives have a more significant effect on the pKa value. For the first time, using the dynamic light scattering method, the particle sizes, polydispersity index, and ζ-potential of colloidal particles in pure aqueous and mixed water–ethanol solutions of methyl yellow (φalcohol from 0.2 % to 50 %) in the presence of NaCl and SDS were estimated. In solutions with φalcohol = 50 % colloidal particles were not found. It has been shown that the hardened gelatin gel of photographic film can be used as a convenient sorbent for methyl yellow. In the process of dye extraction into a gelatin film from water-alcohol solutions containing SDS and NaCl, the acid-base properties of the methyl yellow remained almost unchanged. The difference between the pKa values obtained for the indicator both in solution and in the film did not exceed the measurement error.

Bubble size distribution and turbulence characterization in a bubbly flow in the presence of surfactant

This study aimed to quantify the less explored complex multiphase hydrodynamics of a bubble swarm in the presence of surfactant which is the key to flotation process widely used in the resources and environmental engineering applications.Experiments were conducted in a rectangular column (cross-section: 100 mm × 100 mm) in batch mode by varying the gas flux (0.02 to and 0.08 cm/s) in the presence of an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (5 to 15 ppm). High-speed imaging was then used to visualise the unsteady bubble plume dispersion behaviour and estimate the bubble size distribution (BSD) which showed a reduction in the mean bubble size with the increasing gas flux and surfactant concentration.Next, particle image velocimetry (PIV) was utilised to measure the instantaneous velocity field which was used to determine the turbulence characteristics. It was shown that the bubble plume contributes to significant anisotropy in the flow field which increased in the higher surfactant concentration and gas flux cases. The energy containing turbulence length scale was characterized by the integral length scale, which was observed to increase linearly with both the gas flux and surfactant concentration. Also, the local turbulence energy dissipation rate exhibited a strong linear correlation with the bubble surface area flux parameter. In the presence of surfactant, the turbulence energy spectrum of the system exhibited a less steep slope in the inertial subrange regime compared to the Kolmogorov −5/3 slope. The spectrum also showed a leftward shift indicating energy addition to the larger turbulence length scales which was reflected in the formation of large recirculation zones around the bubble plume.

Molecular interaction of nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory prodrug nepafenac with ionic surfactants

AbstractDrug‐surfactant interaction increases the solubility of poorly water‐soluble drugs and design better pharmaceutical formulations. The degree of interaction of nepafenac (NP), a nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory prodrug was studied with ionic surfactant molecules such as cationic surfactant cetrytrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) in an aqueous medium at room temperature. NP made mixed micelles with CTAB and SDS. To investigate the influence of interactions, conductivity measurements, UV–visible spectroscopy, and fluorescence measurements were recorded. The quantification of NP–surfactant interactions was investigated using various mathematical models. The CMC values determined from conductivity measurements of pure surfactants were 0.96 mM for CTAB and 8.14 mM for SDS near to their literature values. At different mole fractions of NP in UV measurements, binding constants from lnKb were found 0.025 and 0.123 and number of NP molecules per micelles (n) 67, 46 for CTAB and SDS, respectively. The mixed micelles of NP–CTAB and NP–SDS revealed that CTAB has a strong interaction with NP than SDS. The Benesi–Hildebrand relationship, Stern–Volmer and Kawamura replica for the partition coefficient were used to confirm the findings. We are confident that the host–guest interaction mechanism can contribute to a better understanding of molecular recognition in the phospholipid membrane model.

Challenging electroanalytical method for the determination of mirabegron in biological samples and pharmaceutical formulations

A simple, economic, sensitive, and time-saving differential pulse voltammetric (DPV) procedure using nanostructured zinc oxide modified carbon paste electrode (nano ZnO-CPE) in conjunction with an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was developed for ultra- sensitive detection of mirabegron (MIR), the most prescribed pharmaceutical drug in treatment of overactive bladder (OAB). The use of nanostructured zinc oxide CPE modifier increased the electrode active surface area as well as improved the process of electron transfer, also it was found that at optimal conditions MIR electrochemical process was both irreversible and diffusion-regulated. The morphological characterization of the fabricated electrode was performed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). MIR voltammetric behavior was investigated using Nano ZnO-CPE in different content and electrode compositions. Therefore, ultra-sensitive results were attained with a linearity range of (0.55 to 100.20 ng ml−1) and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.51 ng ml−1 and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1.54 ng ml−1 in a 0.04 M Britton-Robinson (BR) buffer at an adjusted pH of 6.0 with scan rate 100 mV s−1. Furthermore, the proposed approach was successful in measuring MIR with acceptable percentage recoveries (99.81–100.11 %) in pharmaceutical dosage form and varying concentration ranges in biological samples (99.74–100.35 %). The proposed method has been validated using ICH criteria and proven to be accurate and repeatable.

Impact of the Amphoteric Nature of a Chelating Surfactant on its Interaction with an Anionic Surfactant: A Surface Tension and Neutron Reflectivity Study of Binary Mixed Solutions.

2-Dodecyldiethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (C12-DTPA) is a chelating, amphoteric surfactant with a bulky headgroup containing eight pH-responsive groups. The hypothesis was that the amphoteric nature of the chelating surfactant would affect the interaction with another surfactant and, consequently, also the composition of mixed surface layers. Binary mixed monolayers of C12-DTPA and the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) were examined using neutron reflection and surface tension measurements. The experiments were conducted at pH 5, where the C12-DTPA monomers carried a net negative charge. Surface excess calculations at low total surfactant concentration revealed that the chelating surfactant dominated the surface composition. However, as the concentration was raised, the surface composition shifted toward an SDS-dominant state. This phenomenon was attributed to the increased ionic strength at increased concentrations, which altered the balance between competing entropic forces in the system. Interaction parameters for mixed monolayer formation were calculated, following a framework based on regular solution theory. In accordance with the hypothesis, the chelating surfactant's ability to modulate its charge and mitigate repulsive interactions in the surface layer resulted in favorable interactions between the anionic SDS and negatively charged C12-DTPA monomers. These interactions were found to be concentration-dependent, which was consistent with the observed shift in the surface layer composition.

INFLUENCE OF POLYVINYL ALCOHOL ON THE STABILITY OF AQUEOUS DISPERSIONS OF NANODIAMONDS

The stability of aqueous dispersions of detonation nanodiamonds (ND) in the presence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been studied. It has been established that PVA additives with a concentration above 0.1 wt.% cause the formation of aggregates. To increase the stability of ND dispersions, it was proposed to add a stabilizer, an anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), into the system. As a result of the simultaneous action of the SDS-PVA mixture, the aggregation stability of aqueous dispersions of ND increases markedly; the particle size in the dispersions does not change for several days.

Effect of linear anionic surfactant (sodium dodecyl sulfate) dosage on nitrogen removal performance of an anammox reactor

AbstractThe impact of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS, as model linear anionic surfactant) dosage on overall nitrogen removal performance of anammox reactor alongside its microbial population and sludge properties was investigated. In this study (day 136), an anmmox sequencing batch biofilm reactor was subjected to gradual dosage of SDS from 0 to 20 mg L−1. Intriguingly, results revealed that SDS at ≥7.5 mg L−1 prompted sludge disintegration, evidenced by increased protein and polysaccharide content in the effluent. Nevertheless, reactor's average total nitrogen removal efficiency slightly improved from 83.12% (0 mg L−1) to 86.3% (20 mg L−1). The 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that SDS dosing significantly suppressed the unwanted and unavoidable nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOBs) in the reactor as the abundance of genus Nitrospira declined from 40.68% (day 1) to 19.15% (day 136). The abundance of anammox genus Candidatus Kuenenia significantly improved from 1.86% (day 1) to 40.02% (day 136) as a result of NOB suppression. This study revealed that low concentration of surfactants in wastewater does not affect the anammox bacteria in a biofilm reactor. Furthermore, adding low concentrations of SDS (≥7.5 to 20 mg L−1) to wastewater may effectively suppress notorious NOBs in biofilm‐based anammox systems.

Sustainably sourced, water-soluble biofilms based on keratin constructed through two crosslinking modes: Turning waste into useful materials

Bio-based packaging films prepared from sustainable sources have attracted much more attention as a potential strategy to address the increasingly serious plastic pollution problems. In this paper, keratin (FK) extracted from waste chicken feathers and cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) extracted from papers were used to construct water-soluble biofilms through physical and chemical crosslinking methods respectively, which can be adapted to different packaging scenarios. In the physical crosslinking manner, anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was used to protect sulfhydryl, avoiding disulfide bonding compounding, and promote the dispersion of FK molecules, ensuring the subsequent assembly of FK with CNCs and glycerol to enhance the mechanical properties and water solubility of the films. Ultrasound accelerated the construction of a three-dimensional hydrogen bonding network, the formed FK/CNCs films showed exceptional tenacity and water-solubility. In the second manner, chemical crosslinking was achieved between FK and oxidated CNCs (OCNCs) through the Schiff base reaction, by which the tensile strength and elongation at break of the films could be highly enhanced, while the films could still be dispersed in water easily. By combining the two crosslinking modes, sustainable biofilms adapted to different packaging scenarios could be prepared by changing the components and ratios. As a kind of typical biofilm, keratin-based water-soluble films have high application potential in many fields, might pave the way for the development of novel sustainable smart packaging products.

Manipulation of the thermo-rheological properties of stable Fe3O4 nanoparticles-embedded PCM nanoemulsions

Phase Change Material (PCM) nanoemulsions offer numerous benefits as thermal energy storage systems, including high energy storage capacity, rapid thermal response, enhanced stability, and easy integration into existing thermal management systems. This study focuses on producing nanoemulsions with fine droplets of commercial paraffin RT42, stabilized with the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) using the sonication method. The impact of formulation of PCM nanoemulsions on its thermophysical and rheological characterization has been investigated. The results indicated that the degree of supercooling declined from 12.8 °C to 8.6 °C as the PCM volume fraction varied from 10 to 45 vol%. This decrease was attributed to the enlargement of PCM droplet size from 110 to 164 nm while maintaining a constant PCM-to-surfactant ratio of 10:1. By incorporating Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a nucleating agent at two different concentrations of 1 and 4 %, the supercooling degree decreased from 10.2 °C to 8.2 °C when 4 % Fe3O4 nanoparticles were added. The samples exhibited remarkable stability throughout a period of one year of storage and under dynamic conditions, including 50 freeze-thaw cycles. Rheological investigations and the gelation mechanism through estimation of the attractive and repulsive interaction forces among droplets revealed that nanoemulsions with volume fractions ≥30 % transformed from fluid-like states to viscoelastic gels due to the depletion attractions caused by SDS micelles in the continuous phase. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the factors influencing the formation of viscoelastic PCM nanoemulsion gels and their potential applications across various fields.

Effectively enhancing red fluorescence strategy and bioimaging applications of carbon dots

Red-emitting carbon dots have attracted much attention because of their excellent fluorescence properties. It is of great significance to synthesize red-emitting carbon dots with high fluorescence quantum yield. Herein, by using citric acid and 1,8-diaminonaphthalene as precursors in N, N-dimethylformamide, novel carbon dots (NC-CDs) exhibiting red emission at 607 nm upon excitation at 514 nm were synthesized via a solvent-thermal approach. NC-CDs aggregated in lipid droplets of cells, and hemin quenched their fluorescence. Subsequently, cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, anionic surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate and nonionic surfactants were used to functionalize the NC-CDs. The results indicated that both ionic surfactants increased the fluorescence quantum yield and solubility of NC-CDs with extended fluorescence lifetime. This approach is applicable to a class of carbon dots that possess both carboxyl and amino groups. Additionally, these functionalized NC-CDs exhibited high recognition sensitivity towards ClO− and Cu2+ respectively except for hemin. This study provides a novel approach for the synthesis of highly red-emitting carbon dots, expanding their applications in the field of biological imaging and sensing. The findings hold significant implications for the real-time monitoring of hemin in lipid droplets. Additionally, this work offers a simple method to dramatic enhance their fluorescence quantum yield.

Nanoporous gold with microporous structure prepared by sodium dodecyl sulfate-mediated electrochemical dealloying

Nanoporous gold (NPG) is a promising catalytic material for the oxidation of CO and methanol applications. However, NPGs are prone to extensive macroscopic cracking that often decrease mechanic properties of NPGs and depresses their catalytic action. To produce crack-free NPG with an ultra-finer porosity in room temperature, the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) was added in electrochemical dealloying process. SDS has the effect of reducing the surface diffusion of gold which hinder the initial coarsening of ligaments and prevents interior silver atoms from being exposed and dissolved. As a result, the pore and ligment size are finer, but higher residual silver of NPG samples. NPG with pore size down to 2 nm and the ligament 4.0 nm was successfully fabricated with 13.32 mM SDS in perchloric acid solution. The surface diffusion coefficient of Au atoms was 1.6 × 10−24 m2·s−1, nearly 3 orders of magnitude smaller than that of Au atoms in the absence of SDS (2.8 × 10−21 m2·s−1). Nanoindentation results demonstrated that high residual silver content made NPG samples harder and stiffer，the specific surface areas of NPG with 6.66 mM SDS was 190 m2 g−1 by BET. This work provided very important clues on how to control the crack free ultrafine nanoporous structure of other materials.

Green Extraction of Carotenoids from Tomato By-products Using Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate

AbstractTomato peel by-products contain high levels of lycopene, which has traditionally been extracted using organic solvents. This research focuses on the optimisation of a sustainable method to obtain a lycopene-rich extract using the biodegradable anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS). A Plackett–Burman experimental design was used to investigate the effect of seven factors on the extraction of carotenoids from tomato peels using sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS volume and concentration, homogenisation intensity and time, sonication phase, extraction time and ultracentrifugation intensity). Based on the responses of total carotenoid extraction, the SDS volume, the use of ultrasound and the extraction time significantly influenced the extraction yield and were selected for optimisation using a Box–Wilson experimental design. The final green extraction protocol (1 g sample + 11.9 ml SDS 0.3%, homogenisation at 13,500 rpm for 2 min, ultrasound phase, agitation for 8.2 h and ultracentrifugation) was selected after quantification of total carotenoids by UV–VIS and HPLC-DAD. Finally, we used nuclear magnetic resonance to demonstrate a high lycopene purity in the carotenoid extract obtained. Furthermore, using transmission electron microscopy, we observed the presence of intact chromoplasts in the extract, protecting the carotenoids from the exposure to external agents. Thus, this work reports an optimised method for the sustainable extraction of carotenoids and demonstrates the viability of the degradable solvent SDS for the extraction of liposoluble bioactive compounds, like carotenoids and mainly lycopene. The lycopene extract could be used for the technological and nutritional enrichment of new foods and/or the design of nutraceuticals.

A novel amidine-based fluorescent probe TPE-4+ for rapid detection of anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate

An accurate, fast, and simple surfactant detection method is of great significance for monitoring surfactants pollution. Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is one of the most commonly used anionic surfactants and has been listed as an important monitoring pollutant for surfactant residues. Herein, a novel fluorescent probe named TPE-4+ with four amidines as the recognition functional group and tetraphenylethene as the fluorophore was fabricated. Due to the special intramolecular environment, the probe showed selectively identification towards SDS which made an aggregation induced fluorescence enhencement. Under the optimum conditions, the fluorescence enhencement of TPE-4+ is linearly related to the concentration of SDS in the range of 5.0–60.0 μM with limit of detection (LOD) of 0.010 μM and limit of quantification (LOQ) of 0.034 μM. Relative to the reported methods, the probe in our work showed better selectivity and sensitivity. The proposed method was successfully applied for the SDS determination of disinfecting bowls.

Molecular interactions of cationic/anionic surfactants in presence of anionic antibiotic drug cloxacillin sodium at different temperatures: Micellization and thermodynamic studies

The physicochemical properties and interactions of surfactant–drug aggregates are regarded as essential features to achieve optimum therapeutic action of the drug. In this article, the effect of various concentrations of anionic antibiotic drug cloxacillin sodium (ClxNa) on the micellization of cationic surfactants such as cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) and anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) have been investigated using electrical conductance measurement at different temperatures (288.15 K, 293.15 K, 298.15 K, 303.15 K, 308.15 K, and 313.15 K). The results suggest an increase in critical micelles concentration (CMC) values for cationic surfactants (CTAB/TTAB) with a rise in drug concentration (0 mM up to 10 mM) whereas anionic surfactant SDS shows a decrease in CMC at higher drug concentrations (from 2.5 mM up to 10 mM) at all the studied temperatures. The degree of counterion dissociation (α) values for TTAB aggregates show a slight increase with [ClxNa], except at a few lower temperature ranges whereas such a regular trend was not obtained for CTAB and SDS aggregates. Temperature-dependent CMC values show a nonlinear nature with a rise in temperatures and follow a U-shaped curve for all studied pure surfactant and surfactant–ClxNa systems. Micellization for all surfactant-drug systems is found to be spontaneous. Investigation of other temperature-dependent thermodynamic parameters such as change in standard enthalpy (ΔHm0), and entropy (ΔSm0) of micellization suggest that surfactant–drug interactions are both endothermic (ΔHm0 < 0, particularly at lower temperatures) and exothermic (ΔHm0 < 0, at higher temperatures), whereas micellization is largely entropically driven (ΔSm0 > ΔHm0).
