"Don't be too proud of this technological terror you've constructed"

Transhumanism is a school of thought that promotes the enhancement of humanity through technological intervention (e.g., cloning, gene therapies, uploading one’s mind to a computer, nanotechnology). Due to its aims of altering evolutionary processes (Bostrom, 2005), transhumanism is highly controversial (Sinicki, 2015). The ideology finds support from younger men, as well as those engaged in science-fiction literature (Gangadharbatla, 2020; Koverola et al., 2022). The present study aimed to investigate the role of gender and specific science fiction fan identities as predictors of transhumanism in three different samples of fandoms affiliated with science-fiction (e.g., anime fans, furries, and Star Wars fans) as well as in a control sample of college students. Participants (N = 6840) responded to a novel measure of transhumanist orientation in either an online or in-person survey. The findings indicated that men were the most likely to endorse transhumanism, as were fans of Star Wars and furries. Overall, the present study supports theorizing that transhumanism may be an influential motif in the science-fiction genre, as well as an appealing ideology for men.

Easily Determining Post-Study System Usability for Anime Community E-Commerce Analysis

The rapid growth of e-commerce as a form of electronic commerce has transformed the global shopping landscape. To maintain user satisfaction and competitiveness, e-commerce sites must effectively understand and improve the usability of their systems after launch. The aims of the study are to improve e-commerce post-launch usability so that anime fans' enthusiasm can be capitalized upon for financial gain and market expansion. In this study, we adopted a combined approach that included user observations, interviews, surveys, and performance measurement for anime community e-commerce analysis Weeboo web commerce. Through this method, we analyze the behavior and views of users towards e-commerce systems. The results show that most users experience a positive experience in shopping online by appreciating the usability of the layout, search process, and fast checkout process. The results indicated that most users have a positive online shopping experience, appreciating the layout, search process, and fast checkout process. The SUS score of 75.375 (grade B) and the overall PSSUQ satisfaction score of 2.0296 indicate that the system is acceptably well-received. The proposed recommendations can help e-commerce companies quickly identify usability issues and implement relevant fixes.

FANATISME PENGGEMAR TERHADAP ATTACK OF TITAN

The Attack on Titan anime has become an extraordinary phenomenon among anime lovers in Indonesia. This series attracts attention and has many fans, especially in anime-loving communities, with its tense storyline and stunning visuals. In this article, the author analyzes fan fanaticism towards Anime Attack on Titan through a qualitative phenomenological study in the Indonesian Anime Lovers community. Researchers plunged directly into the Indonesian Anime Lovers community to answer and feel what a fan's experience is, to see what forms of fanaticism exist within the community. In this article, various forms of fanaticism from Attack on Titan anime fans are found, such as changes in behavior, terror, intimidation, harassment by fans in the Indonesian Anime Lovers Community. Investigating Factors Affecting Fans’ Intention to Attend Anime Events: Conceptual

This study proposes a conceptual framework to investigate the factors influencing anime fans' intention to attend anime events. As the popularity of Japanese animation (anime) proliferates globally, anime events have emerged as a distinct tourism market segment. However, academic research on anime event attendance factors is limited. This study aims to address this gap by developing a framework integrating three key factors frequently highlighted in the general event and fan culture literature: event image, travel motivations, and media information. Event image denotes attendees' holistic perceptions encompassing cognitive and affective dimensions. Travel motivations refer to internal and external drivers stimulating the intention to attend, such as escapism, socialization, and novelty-seeking. Media information represents sources informing attendees' perceptions and decisions through platforms like social media and websites. The framework posits that these three factors directly influence fans' intention to attend anime events. A quantitative methodology will be utilized to collect survey data from anime communities and analyse the model via PLS SEM techniques. The framework contributes a theoretical understanding of anime event attendance, validates linkages between factors, and provides practical implications for event organizers and marketers to enhance the appeal and competitiveness of anime events. Further research could extend the model’s generalizability, explore causal mechanisms between factors, examine additional variables, and conduct longitudinal studies on evolving attendee behaviour and preferences.

IDEAS ABOUT FAMILY AND MARRIAGE AMONG REPRESENTATIVES OF YOUTH SUBCULTURES

The article presents the results of studying the ideas about family and marriage among representatives of different youth subcultures. The study sample consisted of representatives of three areas of youth subculture: anime fans, adherents of healthy lifestyle and gamers. The results obtained indicate that gamers and representatives of the anime subculture are focused on the egalitarian type of family, and representatives of the healthy lifestyle direction are focused on the traditional family model.

Nakama: Reception on the Audience of One Piece Anime by Eiichiro Oda

Background: The theme of friendship in anime is often why an anime fan makes an anime title his/ her favorite. One Piece by Eiichiro Oda is an anime themed on the friendship of pirate crews. It aired on Indonesia’s private television station in the 2000s. In One Piece, the word “Nakama” is assumed to represent the sincere bonds of friendship offered by the character Luffy. But there’s also an assumption about the hidden meaning of making someone into their nakama. Not the one celebrated by the fans, but a reciprocal deed of a human being who needs another person’s help to reach their ambition. The assumption is up because One Piece fan who was touched by this character’s charisma also called themselves “Nakama.” Purpose: Find out the dominant, negotiation, and opposition regarding the scene of “Nakama” explanation by the character Nami in anime episode 102. Methods: This research used a qualitative method with a reception analysis approach by Stuart Hall. An in-depth interview was conducted with four informants who had been fans of One Piece since childhood and studied Japanese language and culture. Results: This research revealed that “nakama” has a biased meaning and does not only refer to “sincere friendship .”The informant’s answers were also influenced by their knowledge of Japanese culture learned in college and their everyday socializing experiences. Two informants are in the dominant hegemony position, and the rest are in a negotiation position because they have not found someone like “nakama” in the One Piece anime. Implications: Provide information about how the audience learning the Japanese language and culture view the meaning of “nakama” in their favorite anime and their view about friendship in real life.

“Still Watching Cartoons?” Infantilization of Young Anime Fans in India: A Critical Discourse Analysis

Animated content is primarily included in the children’s shows category in India. As a result, young adult and adult Indian anime fans are affected by this categorization. To explore their sociocultural experiences in Indian society, fan responses to three questions – posted on Quora, an online question and answer (Q&A) platform – were critically analyzed using Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of Critical Discourse Analysis. The three Quora questions selected for the study were What is it like being an anime fan in India? What is it like to be a manga and anime lover in India? And, why most of the people in India think that anime is for kids? The analysis revealed infantilization of Indian anime fans, mostly young adults or adults. Findings disclosed marginalization of and discrimination against Indian anime fans by the conservative older generation who look at any East Asian popular media from a racially biased lens. Invisibilization, mystification and stereotyping marked the discourse on Indian female anime fans who may not participate extensively in the male-dominated anime fan community on the online fora but consume anime by subversion and negotiated readings.

It is a new generation of social activitise that can be integrated online and globally regardless of where you are. Based on the popular animated series Pokemon, the concept is to have multiple areas with different activities engaging with the target users around the area. The phrase "catch-em-all" usde to refer to the intention to capture the surrounding people and creating a new interactive area for the anime fans. The buildings are divided by three to resemble the three legendary Pokemon Lake Guardians. The spaces are also planned according to the gym leader theme from the game adapted from the anime.

Within the framework of this study, the essence of the phenomenon of “PMC ʹʹRedanʹʹ” is determined, and the influence of mass media on the spread of destructive subcultures among minors is theoretically substantiated. Of particular interest are the results of monitoring social networks on the topic under consideration. It is concluded that “PMC ʹʹRedanʹʹ” is a youth subculture of criminal orientation, gaining popularity among young people, which is largely explained by their age characteristics. Concerns are not caused by the “PMC ʹʹRedanʹʹ” movement itself, not by the subculture that anime fans adhere to, but by the fact that this large group of teenagers can be used to their advantage by setting them up to commit illegal acts. We believe that the sharp growth and no less rapid decline in the activity of “PMC ʹʹRedanʹʹ” is a kind of trial action of the people behind this youth movement to identify the level of readiness of the authorities to resolve conflict situations in society.

Anime Trend as An Advert Genre in Indonesian Youtube

Anime is a loanword from English 'animation' which is absorbed into Japanese. The rise of anime fans among teenagers in recent years has led companies to increase sales by using product marketing in the form of anime-style advertising media on television. This scientific articles aim to find out about anime trends in Indonesia and what their impact is on the advertising media for a product in Indonesia. This study was conducted by applying the qualitative method of which the discussion was presented descriptively. The data of this study were obtained by using observation and note taking technique. The results of this study indicate that there is an increase in the number of viewers on anime-style advertisements compared to non-anime-style ads.

“Do female anime fans exist?” The impact of women-exclusionary discourses on rec.arts.anime

This paper examines women-exclusionary discourses on the popular anime Usenet newsgroup, rec.arts.anime. By going back to pre-2000 online anime histories, this paper proposes to understand how women-exclusionary discursive practices on rec.arts.anime have contributed to shaping contemporary toxic technocultures’ discursive identities, as it is admitted that forum 4chan originated from online anime fandom. By using a data set of 252 messages related to gender issues posted from 1992 to 1996, I identify 7 discursive practices that I am theorizing here under the name of negative networking: 1. Blaming female anime fans for their lack of visibility; 2. Doubting the authentic interest of women in anime; 3. Mystifying the female anime fan; 4. Harassing female anime fans; 5. Criticizing the association of feminism with anime, both as interpretive practices and as scholarship; 6. Belittling female anime fans’ concerns; and 7. Denying or ignoring the challenges faced by female anime fans. I argue that the impact of these discourses must be understood as determinant in the establishment of the online anime hegemonic fan identity and its prediscourses, especially as they relate to the long-lasting marginalization of women and gender diverse anime fans.

To be Seen, Not Just Read: Script Use on the Votive Prayer Tablets of Anime, Manga, and Game Fans

ABSTRACT This article proposes one social explanation for the occurrence of graphic variation in contemporary written Japanese by examining a heretofore unexamined context of writing. Embracing the material culture approach, I explore the ema (votive prayer tablets) dedicated at Shinto shrines by fans of popular culture media productions. Fans pen text on the ema that follows aesthetics of manga as well as online communication, incorporating features that are usually limited to print and online writing. Analyzing upwards of 2,000 ema from three shrines, this article proceeds to dissect a writing style composed of a mix of syllabaries and symbols using ‘thick description’ to evince the emotion behind fans’ calculated efforts to construct text that is not simply to be read, but to be seen. Seeking to answer the question of what fans attempt to achieve by writing on the ema in the way that they do, I will reference folklorist Elliott Oring’s ‘appropriate incongruity’ to put forth an argument that fans, harnessing a sense of play and endeavoring to animate the text on the ema, intimate by means of the visual presentation of writing-restricted variation a questioning of the perceived division between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional worlds.

Intragroup helping as a mediator of the association between fandom identification and self-esteem and well-being

ABSTRACT We examined whether intragroup helping mediates the relationship between identification with one’s fandom and self-esteem and psychological well-being in three different samples of fans: bronies (fans of the television series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic), anime fans (fans of Japanese animation and graphic novels), and furries (fans of anthropomorphic art and stories). Fans completed measures of ingroup identification, intragroup helping, and self-esteem (Studies 1 & 2) or psychological well-being (Study 3). Across all studies, the results tended to support intragroup helping as a mediator of the relationship between identification and self-esteem (Studies 1 & 2) and psychological well-being (Study 3). The results highlight a possible mechanism contributing to the benefits of belonging to fan groups and illustrate the possible benefits of helping others within one’s fan group.

This study aims to clarify the background, process, and why “production committees,” the main financing method for Japanese video content, became established in TV anime in the early 1990s.<BR> The production committee method was introduced to TV animation in the early 1990s, creating a new trend. Behind this was the emergence of anime fans, who appeared rapidly in the 1980s, the emergence of VCRs, which was a new medium, and the establishment of a market centered on package sales aimed at fans. Thereafter, the fan-centered TV anime industry that sells videos became established in the early 1990s when the TV animation market stagnated temporarily after the collapse of the economic bubble. Thus, the method of raising the funds for production costs for TV anime began to shift from “selling things” to “selling the work itself.”<BR> Existing studies of production committees were limited to industrial research due to their emphasis on risk avoidance. The present study is significant in that it focuses on the media and socioeconomic aspects, specifically the media and fandom-centric sales strategies.

Flying on borrowed feathers: identity formation among gender-variant anime fans in the U.S

ABSTRACT Androgyny and gender ambiguity are common tropes in Japanese comics and animation, which may be taken for granted by a Japanese audience but are subject to reinterpretation by American fans, especially those who identify on the LGBTQ spectrum. These interpretations naturalize a concept of gender as flexible and fluid, and an ethos that lionizes and defends idiosyncratic self-expression. In the course of my ethnographic research at anime fan conventions in the U.S., I have encountered many individuals identifying as non-binary, genderfluid, or agendered, who use the semiotics they have encountered in Japanese media to resist and remix elements of femininity and masculinity as they are understood in the West. In this commentary, I explore the experiences of several informants who have used anime character tropes, as well as the fan practice of cosplay, to re-forge their genders into new molds that allow them greater self-expression, and a sense of belonging within an inclusive subculture that supports such exploration.

The Use of English Words and Sentences in Japanese Anime Songs (Code Mixing and Language Switching in Japanese Anime Songs)

As the popularity of Japanese Anime increases over time around the world, many anime fans would have realized a unique tendency in the theme songs of their favorite series: the tendency to mix or replace Japanese song lyrics with English words or sentences. The research surrounding the phenomenon of English words usage inside Japanese song lyrics has been done numerous times by numerous persons from different country, institution and generation prior to this article. And thus, this article is written in order to take part in those researches by means of comparing anime theme songs from different ages, the 80s, the 90s and 2000 and above. The purpose is to compare the frequency and tendency of mixing or replacing Japanese lyrics with English words or sentences.

With the rapid development of science and technology, people’s living standards are slowly improving. Simple material conditions can no longer meet people’s spiritual needs. People use various methods to obtain spiritual and soul satisfaction. Therefore, Internet products gradually penetrate the public. There are no exceptions in all aspects of life, such as work, study, making friends, and entertainment. However, there are very few animation products, which cannot meet the strong needs of the majority of animation fans. Due to the popularity of the Internet and economic development, traditional economy is no longer the main way for consumers. In order to meet the individual needs of consumer groups, the animation industry will provide diversified and customized needs. The later development trend in this area is also animation. The industry’s indispensable and main development direction is to integrate everyone’s different hobbies and personalities into the animation industry, and develop an animation system with simple pages, rich functions and diversified content.

Anime as Japanese Intercultural Communication: A Study of the Weeaboo Community of Indonesian Generation Z and Y

Acculturation today does not only occur due to direct physical interaction between two different cultural groups, but rather, it is due more to online interaction. Cultural interaction also raises the imitation of the visual aspects of popular commodities, such as films being cultural products. This study aims to explore subcultures and identity communication built and maintained in the weeaboo fandom community outside of Japan. It also analyzes the daily experiences of individuals in interacting within the community and outside of it. This study uses a qualitative phenomenological approach through detailed observation, in-depth interviews, and analysis of community interactions on social media. Because weeaboo’s scope is anime fans in various countries other than Japan, the sources and participants of this study were drawn mainly from Indonesia. The results showed that the weeaboo subculture arose between millennials and generation Z anime lovers. These cohorts began to recognize anime and form communities from childhood with those with the same habits, so similar characters and preferences emerge. Acculturation occurs in contiguity between two primary cultures where a new culture is born. In the context of anime, there is acculturation between Japanese culture (home culture) with the culture of a different country, as anime fans in the community do their routines and habits differently from the anime home country (Japan) in the host country (outside Japan). This study found that the weeaboo subculture of Indonesian Generation Z and Y is shaped by acculturation in intercultural communication such as in language, expressions, fashion, accessories, make-up, hairstyle, cuisine, group attitudes, values, and natural and cultural preferences of Japanese destinations. Based on the findings, further research can continue to analyze other aspects that are affected by the weeaboo community, such as international relations, economic aspects, and the Japanese tourism industry.

‘Get out of my fandom, newbie’: A cross-fandom study of elitism and gatekeeping in fans

In the present article we discuss three studies aimed at better understanding elitism in the context of fan groups. The studies assess different facets of elitism, predictors of elitism and the potential outcomes associated with holding elitist beliefs. The survey studies were conducted on members of three distinct fan groups: furries (fans of media featuring anthropomorphized animal characters), bronies (adult fans of the television seriesMy Little Pony) and anime fans (fans of Japanese animation). Elitism was found to include both self-inflation and other-derogation and is predicted by two components of fan identity (fanship and fandom). Elitism was also significantly associated with pro-gatekeeping attitudes and behaviours. Practical and theoretical implications for fan culture are discussed. We also discuss the limitations of the studies and their ability to contribute to a discussion about creating inclusive fan spaces.
