Contemporary Interpretation Approach In The Culture Of Patriarchal Analysis In Surah An-Nisa Verse 34: Literature Review

This study examines the role of Qur'anic interpretation in promoting social welfare, focusing on the implementation of justice values in holy verses, especially in Surah An-Nisa verse 34. The method used is a literature study, which includes an in-depth analysis of various sources of literature related to gender and interpretation. The results show that traditional understandings of gender, which are often rooted in patriarchal societies, result in hierarchies that are detrimental to women. However, contemporary interpretations of this verse seek to challenge this view, offering a more inclusive perspective and emphasizing gender equality. This study concludes that a fairer interpretation approach can contribute positively to gender relations in Muslim society. These findings are expected to enrich academic discussions about gender in Islam and encourage the application of social justice principles in society

FROM TAFSIR TO TADABBUR

This article aims to look at the history of tadabbur knowledge in Saudi Arabia as an alternative trend in understanding the Qur’an in the contemporary era. The study of Qur’anic reading dominated by hermeneutical-contextual discourse ignores other responses to the complexity of understanding and applying Qur’anic content. The stagnation of the development of Qur’anic interpretation in Saudi Arabia is not entirely true. One form of response that has become a trend is the recitation of tadabbur al-Qur’ān. This is indicated by the massive publication of various books on tadabbur in the last twenty years (2000–2020), which symbolizes the alternation of Saudi Arabian scholars in responding to contemporary interpretive discourse. Tadabbur inspiration can be found in three works of tafsir written by Saudi scholars beginning with ‘Abdurraḥmān Sa‘dī, Shaykh Uthaimīn, and Shaykh Sulaymān al-Lāḥīm. Through a survey and brief review of the idea of tadabbur in the knowledge network of Qur’anic exegesis in Saudi Arabia, this study found three main trends. First, the influence of Salafi ideology as an idea that underlies the dissemination of the concept of Qur’anic tadabbur. Second, revitalization efforts were made by ‘Abdurraḥmān Ḥabannakah in making tadabbur a separate discipline. Third, as a response to the diversity of contextual-applicative approaches dominated by the hermeneutic approach to the Qur’an. These three trends become a form of methodological response of Saudi Arabian scholars to the discourse of reading the Qur’an that developed in the contemporary era.

The Development of Qur’anic Thematic Exegesis in Indonesia: Historical Landscape and Shifts of Authority

Recognizing that thematic Qur'anic interpretation has become the most prominent method in the modern era, this study aims to track its evolution in Indonesia. Despite its popularity in academic contexts, there remains a critical gap in examining its application outside of universities. This study focuses on the shifts in interpretative authority and methodology in thematic Qur'anic exegesis across different sectors, including the state, Islamic boarding schools, universities, and individuals. Using a critical analysis method, the study uncovers several key findings. Firstly, there has been an authoritative shift, where Qur'anic commentators in Indonesia are not limited to traditional mufassir but now include scholars from non-religious fields. Secondly, methodological shifts are evident in several aspects: the editorial framing of interpretations, the reduction in the selection of Qur'anic verses used as primary research data, and the emergence of distinct interpretative tendencies. Additionally, there has been a paradigm shift in the relationship between Qur'anic text and social reality, where one approach begins with the Qur'an and leads to an idealistic-normative interpretation, while another starts from social reality and results in an applicative-solutive interpretation. This research fills a crucial academic gap by highlighting the broader changes in thematic exegesis, offering insights into its evolving methodologies and its relevance in addressing contemporary social realities in Indonesia.

Motivasi Sedekah Dalam Al-Qur’an: Studi Penafsiran Ayat-Ayat Sedekah Dalam Tafsir Al-Qur’anul Majid An-Nuur

This study examines the motivation for charitable giving (sadaqah) in asbi ash-Shiddieqy's Al-Qur’anul Majid through the lens of Bourdieu's theory. The significance of this research lies in integrating social theory with Qur'anic interpretation to explore how capital, habitus, and practice influence charitable actions. The methodology involves a qualitative analysis of ash-Shiddieqy's tafsir using Bourdieu's theory, while identifying gaps in previous studies related to the roles of symbolic and cultural capital and gender equality in charitable giving. The novelty of this research is its application of Bourdieu’s theory to investigate how metaphors in the tafsir and gender equality impact motivation and practice in charitable giving. The findings indicate that the metaphors in Al-Qur’anul Majid simplify the concept of sadaqah, making it easier to understand and implement, thereby increasing motivation. Gender equality in charitable giving, as outlined in ash-Shiddieqy's tafsir, promotes active participation from all genders and reinforces egalitarian values in charitable practices. Furthermore, mutual reminders within the community, according to the tafsir, play a crucial role in maintaining the quality and consistency of charitable actions, strengthening social capital, and shaping a habitus that supports sustainable giving. This study contributes significant insights by linking Qur'anic exegesis with contemporary social theory, offering new perspectives on how social and symbolic factors influence charitable practices within religious and social contexts.

The literary exegesis of the Qur'an developed by Amin Al-Khuli offers a new approach to interpreting the sacred text as a response to critiques of classical exegesis and modern cultural and intellectual developments. This study aims to explore the evolution of Qur'anic interpretation in the contemporary era, with a focus on Amin Al-Khuli’s literary exegesis of the verses on fasting and its relevance to the sociological and psychological conditions of Muslims who fast. The research uses a qualitative approach with library research methods, where data is gathered through literature review and analyzed using techniques of inventory, classification, and interpretation. The findings reveal that Al-Khuli’s literary exegesis provides a deeper and more contextual understanding of the fasting verses, linking the aspects of language and Qur'anic meaning with contemporary social and psychological conditions. The conclusion of this research is that the literary exegesis approach not only enriches the understanding of the text but also offers practical solutions to the challenges faced by Muslims in fasting practices. Recommendations for future research include conducting field studies to collect more empirical data and exploring the integration of literary exegesis with other interpretive approaches for broader application in Muslims' daily lives.

The Reception of Hamka's Tafsir Al-Azhar within Social Religious Issues in the Malay World

This study explores the reception and impact of Hamka's Tafsir Al-Azhar across the Malay world, particularly in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, and Singapore. Tafsir Al-Azhar, written by the renowned Malay scholar Hamka, is a significant work of Qur'anic exegesis that has influenced Islamic thought in Southeast Asia. By employing a qualitative research method, specifically a case study with phenomenological analysis, this research investigates how Tafsir Al-Azhar has been received, interpreted, and utilized by various Muslim communities in these regions. The study examines the historical context in which Hamka's work was produced, focusing on its dissemination and its pivotal role in addressing socio-religious issues from the mid-20th century to the present day. By applying reception theory, the analysis highlights the dynamic interaction between the text and its readers, revealing how interpretations of Tafsir Al-Azhar have evolved in response to shifting social, political, and cultural landscapes. The research also explores the influence of external religious streams, modernity, and globalization on the Malay Muslim identity, and how these factors have shaped the adaptation and reception of traditional tafsir practices. The findings suggest that while Tafsir Al-Azhar has become a central reference in the religious life of Malay Muslims, its reception varies significantly across different countries. These variations are influenced by local cultural, religious, and political contexts, as well as by Hamka's personal interactions with these communities. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of Qur'anic interpretation in Southeast Asia, emphasizing the importance of contextualizing tafsir to address the diverse needs and challenges of Muslim communities in the region.

The Qur'anic stories constitute one of the most important purposes for explanation, lesson, and measuring current events against past events that the Qur'an wants to convey to us. The Qur'anic story has been formulated in various ways, according to what the context requires, some of which are detailed, and some of which are summarized. The story of the People of the Cave is one of the stories that have been detailed. This research deals with the story of the People of the Cave in terms of using the verb to know the style of the Qur'anic story from the gate of grammar. This was discussed through two important meanings: the timeliness of the verb used, and the futurestic of the verb in the story of the People of the Cave. This section sheds light on how the story, despite the pastness of its time, was formulated in a style that indicates the present and the future so that the story is alive and renewed. The style of dialogue in this story was also discussed, which made the text lively and vibrant with vitality and movement. It was concluded that researching the Qur'anic text through grammar leads to knowledge that adds a dimension to the Qur'anic interpretation that can be used to know the secrets of the Holy Qur'an.

The Dynamic of Contextualization in Indonesian Qur'anic Tafsirs: A Comparative Study of Tafsir Al-Azhar and Tafsir Al-Mishbāh on The Story of The Prophet Moses

The Indonesian Qur’anic tafsirs represent a contextual approach. Each tafsir scholar has different characteristics in contextualizing the meaning of the Qur’an so that it is relevant to contemporary Indonesian society. This article aims to show the dynamic character of Indonesian Qur’anic interpretation in contextualizing the meaning of the verses about Moses in the Indonesian context. This research uses a comparative method against the al-Azhar tafsir written by Haji Abdul Malik bin Karim Amrullah, also known as Hamka, and the Tafsir al-Mishbāh by M. Quraish Shihab. The three aspects compared and the research questions include: How is the story of Prophet Moses narrated in the two tafsir books? What are the interpretation methods used in the verses about the story of Prophet Moses, and how can the lessons from the story of Prophet Moses align with the Indonesian cultural context? The research results show that both tafsir books have similarities in making the story of Moses relevant to Indonesian society. The difference is that Tafsir al-Mishbāh appears more disciplined in following the textual meaning of the Qur’anic verses. In contrast, Tafsir al-Azhar is more flexible in its storytelling improvisation, making the story of Moses more cohesive and engaging. Shihab understands the story of Moses as Allah’s plan to overthrow human arrogance (Pharaoh), with a narrative flow following Allah’s laws. This retelling represents Shihab’s traditionalist and pragmatic thinking. In contrast, Hamka is more rational and critical. He views the story of Moses as a struggle and heroism that teaches the importance of hard work and intelligence in facing life’s challenges. The findings of this research contribute to showing the dynamic nature of Indonesian contextual tafsir. It illustrates how the Qur’anic interpretation maintains its textual meaning while remaining relevant for contemporary readers.

Contemporary Approaches to Qur'anic Hermeneutics

The problem in this study focuses on the significant changes in Qur'ānic hermeneutics in the modern era, where traditional approaches are often considered inadequate in addressing contemporary issues. This discrepancy creates a need for a more contextualized and inclusive approach to interpretation. This study aims to analyze the transformation of Qur'ānic hermeneutics and offer a more contextual approach without ignoring traditional values. The research used a descriptive qualitative method with a literature review design. The research subjects comprised 15 Muslim scholars and scholars involved in contemporary Qur'anic interpretation. Data were collected through document analysis and in-depth interviews, using an interview guide as an instrument. Data analysis was conducted through content and thematic analysis approaches. The results showed that the contemporary hermeneutic approach is more adaptive to modern social and cultural changes, enriching a more inclusive and contextual interpretation methodology. This study concludes that the transformation of Qur'anic hermeneutics offers interpretations more relevant to the challenges of the times. The implication of this research shows the need for a flexible hermeneutical method to support Muslims' understanding in the modern context.

JEWISH ANTAGONISM AS PORTRAYED BY HAMKA IN THE BOOK OF TAFSIR AL-AZHAR

Abdul Malik Karim Amrullah (Hamka) is widely recognized as a leading Muslim intellectual of 20th-century Indonesia, renowned for his extensive body of work, including both novels and Qur'anic exegesis. His tafsir has been the subject of considerable scholarly interest across Asia. The Qur'an contains numerous verses concerning the Jews, and as an exegete of the entire 30 juz of the Qur'an, Hamka offers a distinct interpretation of these verses. The 20th century was a period marked by significant global political upheaval, notably the establishment of Israel in 1948. The creation of the Israeli state had profound consequences for Muslims worldwide, intensifying anti-Jewish, anti-Zionist, and anti-Israel sentiments, which also permeated discourse in the United States and the United Kingdom. Within this context, several Islamic scholars began to integrate European concepts found in the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion," a document that portrays Jews as malevolent and conspiratorial figures. These ideas gradually infiltrated the field of Qur'anic exegesis, including Indonesian works, most prominently Hamka's Tafsir Al-Azhar, first published in 1965. Before this period, the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" had not influenced Qur'anic interpretation. This paper seeks to critically analyze the theme of Jewish conspiracy in Hamka's tafsir by tracing the origins of his arguments, identifying the presence of conspiratorial elements in his exegesis, and examining the extent to which Hamka's views converge with those of Sayyid Qutb. The study employs a library-based literature review utilizing a descriptive-analytical and critical approach. The findings reveal that Hamka strongly adheres to the conspiracy theory espoused in the "Protocols of the Elders of Zion," depicting Jews as aiming to establish a new world order, dominate the global economy, and control Hollywood and the media. Moreover, Hamka's interpretations are significantly shaped by Sayyid Qutb's concepts of Jahiliyyah (ignorance) and Hakimiyyah (sovereignty).

The phenomenon of Qur'anic tafsir continues to develop and change from tafsir bil Ma'tsur to tafsir bill Ra'yi, The phenomenon of transformation and development of tafsir is inseparable from the search for meaning by readers of the Qur'anic text, namely mufassir. This transformation then gave rise to the epistemology of interpretation. This article wants to periodize the thinking of interpreters from birth to contemporary today because changes in interpretation are influenced by epistemology, the epistemology of interpretation includes reason, sources of knowledge, methods, validation, and media. From this, the question arises, (1) How to identify the frame of mind and points of thought of interpretation from classical to contemporary? (2) What is the product of the transformation of the development of Islamic thought in Tafsir? This can be traced to the development of the human way of reason in the face of the Qur'anic texts. This research uses a qualitative-descriptive method with a historical approach and theory of The Historical Idea Qur’anic interpretation by Ignaz Goldziher. From the results of the study, five eras have significant transformations, namely; the time of the Prophet who used the Era of Revelation Reason (Birth Era), in the growth of Islam the emergence of Mystical thought (Formative Era), and the golden age of Islam used Ideological reason (Affirmative Era). The modern era emerged critical reason (Reformative Era). The emergence of the new media era today, gave birth to interpretation with the contextual-analogical reason (Anological Era) of Qur'anic interpretation texts, can be seen in the audio-visual interpretation of Gus Baha' in Q.S Thaha verses 17-18.

This study investigates methods of Qur'anic interpretation through a linguistic approach, with a focus on semantics and semiotics—both of which are essential for mufassirs (Qur'anic interpreters) in understanding Arabic. The primary objective is to explore how semiotic concepts are applied in interpreting the word نُور (Nuur, meaning "light") in verse 35 of Surah an-Nur. This research adopts a library-based content analysis with a qualitative descriptive approach. Semiotic theory is employed to examine the tafsir works of Jalalain, Ibn Kathir, Quraish Shihab, and al-Tabari. Semiotics, the study of signs and their meanings, reveals that these mufassirs have applied semiotic principles in their interpretations. In Tafsir Jalalain, Saussure’s semiotic theory is evident in the treatment of نُور, where the signifier represents meanings such as light, guidance, and Islam. In Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Roland Barthes’ semiotics is utilized, highlighting both the denotative and connotative meanings of the word. In Tafsir al-Tabari, Roman Jakobson’s communication model is applied, incorporating elements like sender, receiver, and message. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that semiotic concepts are widely integrated into the interpretative practices of mufassirs in their analysis of Qur'anic verses.

The study adopts a case study approach to explore how the Qur'anic interpretation method impacts students' understanding of ethical concepts. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis was employed to analyze the data, revealing nuanced insights into the relationship between the Qur'anic interpretation method and students' ethical understanding. The findings suggest that the Qur'anic interpretation method significantly contributes to enhancing students' comprehension of ethics, emphasizing the importance of integrating religious texts into educational curricula to promote moral development among students.

Reinterpreting Qur'anic Themes: Muṣṭafa Muslim's Approach to Mauḍū'ī Tafsir

This article delves into Muṣṭafa Muslim's method of mauḍū'ī tafsir, emphasizing the process of reinterpreting themes found within the Qur'an. The research methodology employed is library-based, utilizing an analytical framework. It commences with identifying primary sources pertinent to the research focus, particularly literature concerning Qur'anic interpretation, with a specific emphasis on the mauḍū'ī approach. The primary focus lies on Muṣṭafa Muslim's work "Mabāhits fī al-Tafsīr al-Mawdhū'ī." Through this investigation, it is evident that Muṣṭafa Muslim developed three distinct methods for crafting a distinctive mauḍū'ī interpretation. Firstly, he employs a technique to delve into the meanings of specific Qur'anic words. Secondly, he employs a method to identify and analyze themes present within individual Qur'anic surahs. Lastly, he utilizes an approach to explore themes spanning across various surahs in the Qur'an. By examining Muṣṭafa Muslim's approach to understanding and reinterpreting Qur'anic themes within the context of mauḍū'ī tafsir, this article offers valuable insights for researchers and enthusiasts of Qur'anic studies, thereby paving the way for further scholarly exploration in this domain.

Values of the Code of Ethics of Dental Services Qur'anic Perspective: Analytical Study of the Interpretation of Related Verses KODEKGI

This research aims to analyze KODEKGI values from the perspective of Qur'anic interpretation, as well as to analyze the implementation of KODEKGI service values from a Qur'anic perspective on Muslim dentists. This research uses a qualitative method by combining two research locations, library research and field research. Primary data were generated from field research through direct interviews with dentist respondents through sampling methods, as well as a literature study of three tafsir books in the style of al-'adabi al-ijma'i and Tafsir Tahlili of the Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia. While the secondary data is generated from the research library. The data analysis technique that the author used in this research is the content analysis technique. The two formulations produced by this study are: first, ten articles related to services to patients in KODEKGI have values that are in line with the Qur'an. Secondly, a review of Muslim doctors' services against KODEKGI shows their original intention was to abide by the existing rules. There are Qur'anic values in KODEKGI triggering Muslim dentist respondents to run KODEKGI to worship Allah.

This study aims to explore aspects of Ibn 'Asyur's authority in the tafsir al-Tahrir wa al-Tanwir as a discourse shaper in the scientific world of Qur'anic interpretation. This type of research is library research with descriptive-analytical method. The approach to be used to achieve the research objectives is the archaeology of knowledge approach initiated by Michel Foucault in the concept of power and knowledge relations. The result of this research is that Ibn 'Asyur's tafsir al-Tahrir wa al-Tanwir has an important authority in the scientific world of tafsir. This is characterized by several things. First, the complexity of Ibn 'Asyur descriptions that contain various opinions of scholars without favoring one opinion with another opinion without rational reasons creates new developments in the science of interpretation. This creates its own authority because it is able to release the tendency of laziness by moving to the aspect of rationality. Second, his expertise in the field of maqashid al-syari'ah makes him able to understand the differences in each of the arguments of the scholars of different schools and sometimes seem contradictory. With such insight, Ibn 'Asyur was able to escape the subjetivity of the madhhab and chose to be objective by containing all opinions.

TELAAH KITAB RASAIL AL-NUR OLEH SAID NURSI

This paper discusses Said Nursi’s Qur’anic interpretation, Risalah al-Nur and its historical background and foundational role in Islamic intellectual history and its religious tradition under the repressive secular modern Turkish Republic administration. It looks into the cultural impact of its moral-spiritual teaching and its historical significance in developing and fulfilling the fundamental role of Qur’anic revelation in delivering and justifying the principal of ethics and morality, and its cosmological values in guiding the formation of higher ethical-legal and civilizational framework. The study is based on library research using historical and qualitative approaches and documentation technique. The finding shows that the Risalah al-Nur has set forth through empirical and scientific method, the conclusive truth of the Qur’an and hadith paradigm, by way of similitude and comparison, which provide basic proof of the postulates of its inimitability and miraculousness, that was vital in strengthening the belief of tawhid and in reinforcing the religious and spiritual consciousness of the people. In the context of its interpretation and historical significance, the discourse presented in the Risalah al-Nur emphatically upheld the teaching of the Qur’an and hadith and contextualize its transcendental ideals, philosophy and values to modern life.
