Evolution of Mn1-xGexBi2Te4 Electronic Structure under Variation of Ge Content.

One of the approaches to manipulate MnBi2Te4 properties is the magnetic dilution, which inevitably affects the interplay of magnetism and band topology in the system. In this work, we carried out angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations for analysing changes in the electronic structure of Mn1-xGexBi2Te4 that occur under parameter x variation. We consider two ways of Mn/Ge substitution: (i) bulk doping of the whole system; (ii) surface doping of the first septuple layer. For the case (i), the experimental results reveal a decrease in the value of the bulk band gap, which should be reversed by an increase when the Ge concentration reaches a certain value. Ab-initio calculations show that at Ge concentrations above 50%, there is an absence of the bulk band inversion of the Te pz and Bi pz contributions at the Γ-point with significant spatial redistribution of the states at the band gap edges into the bulk, suggesting topological phase transition in the system. For case (ii) of the vertical heterostructure Mn1-xGexBi2Te4/MnBi2Te4, it was shown that an increase of Ge concentration in the first septuple layer leads to effective modulation of the Dirac gap in the absence of significant topological surface states of spatial redistribution. The results obtained indicate that surface doping compares favorably compared to bulk doping as a method for the Dirac gap value modulation.

Spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of heptahelicene layers on Cu(111) surfaces.

It has been demonstrated previously that electrons interact differently with chiral molecules depending on their polarization. For enantiomeric pure monolayers of heptahelicene, opposite asymmetries in spin polarization were reported and attributed to the so-called chirality-induced spin selectivity effect. However, these promising proof-of-concept photoemission experiments lack the angular and energy resolution that could provide the necessary insights into the mechanism of this phenomenon. In order to fill in the missing gaps, we provide a detailed spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of heptahelicene layers on a Cu(111) substrate. Throughout the large accessible energy and angle range, no chirality induced spin asymmetry in photoemission could be observed. Possible reasons for the absence of signatures of the spin-dependent electron transmission through the chiral molecular layer are briefly discussed.

Fabrication of Single-Crystalline CoCrFeNi Thin Films by DC Magnetron Sputtering: A Route to Surface Studies of High-Entropy Alloys.

High-entropy alloys (HEAs) with their almost limitless number of possible compositions have raised widespread attention in material science. Next to wear and corrosion resistive coatings, their application as tunable electrocatalysts has recently moved into the focus. On the other hand, fundamental properties of HEA surfaces like atomic and electronic structure, surface segregation and diffusion as well as adsorption on HEA surfaces are barely explored. The lack of research is caused by the limited availability of single-crystalline samples. In the present work, the epitaxial growth of face centered cubic (fcc) CoCrFeNi films on MgO(100) is reported. Their characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) demonstrates that the layers with a homogeneous and close to equimolar elemental composition are oriented in [100] direction and aligned with the substrate to which they form an abrupt interface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy are employed to study chemical composition and atomic and electronic structure of CoCrFeNi(100). It is demonstrated that epitaxially grown HEA films have the potential to fill the sample gap, allowing for fundamental studies of properties of and processes on well-defined HEA surfaces over the full compositionalspace.

Inducing Single Spin-Polarized Flat Bands in Monolayer Graphene.

Due to the fundamental and technological implications in driving the appearance of non-trivial, exotic topological spin textures and emerging symmetry-broken phases, flat electronic bands in 2D materials, including graphene, are nowadays a relevant topic in the field of spintronics. Here, via europium doping, single spin-polarized bands are generated in monolayer graphene supported by the Co(0001) surface. The doping is controlled by Eu positioning, allowing for the formation of a -valley localized single spin-polarized low-dispersive parabolic band close to the Fermi energy when Eu is on top, and of a π* flat band with single spincharacter when Eu is intercalated underneath graphene. In the latter case, Eu also induces a bandgap opening at the Dirac point while the Eu 4f states act as a spin filter, splitting the π band into two spin-polarized branches. The generation of flat bands with single spin character, as revealed by the spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments, complemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, opens up new pathways toward the realization of spintronic devices exploiting such novel exotic electronic and magnetic states.

Surface Electronic Structure Engineering of Manganese Bismuth Tellurides Guided by Micro-Focused Angle-Resolved Photoemission.

Modification of the electronic structure of quantum matter by ad atom deposition allows for directed fundamental design of electronic and magnetic properties. This concept is utilized in the present study in order to tune the surface electronic structure of magnetic topological insulators based on MnBi2 Te4 . The topological bands of these systems are typically strongly electron-doped and hybridized with a manifold of surface states that place the salient topological states out of reach of electron transport and practical applications. In this study, micro-focused angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (microARPES) provides direct access to the termination-dependent dispersion of MnBi2 Te4 and MnBi4 Te7 during in situ deposition of rubidium atoms. The resulting band structure changes are found to be highly complex, encompassing coverage-dependent ambipolar doping effects, removal of surface state hybridization, and the collapse of a surface state band gap. In addition, doping-dependent band bending is found to give rise to tunable quantum well states. This wide range of observed electronic structure modifications can provide new ways to exploit the topological states and the rich surface electronic structures of manganese bismuthtellurides.

Momentum-Space Imaging of Ultra-Thin Electron Liquids in δ-Doped Silicon.

Two-dimensional dopant layers (δ-layers) in semiconductors provide the high-mobility electron liquids (2DELs) needed for nanoscale quantum-electronic devices. Key parameters such as carrier densities, effective masses, and confinement thicknesses for 2DELs have traditionally been extracted from quantum magnetotransport. In principle, the parameters are immediately readable from the one-electron spectral function that can be measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Here, buried 2DEL δ-layers in silicon are measured with soft X-ray (SX) ARPES to obtain detailed information about their filled conduction bands and extract device-relevant properties. This study takes advantage of the larger probing depth and photon energy range of SX-ARPES relative to vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) ARPES to accurately measure the δ-layer electronic confinement. The measurements are made on ambient-exposed samples and yield extremely thin (< 1nm) and dense (≈1014 cm-2 ) 2DELs. Critically, this method is used to show that δ-layers of arsenic exhibit better electronic confinement than δ-layers of phosphorus fabricated under identical conditions.

Twist-Induced Modification in the Electronic Structure of Bilayer WSe2.

The recent discovery of strongly correlated phases in twisted transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) highlights the significant impact of twist-induced modifications on electronic structures. In this study, we employed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with submicrometer spatial resolution (μ-ARPES) to investigate these modifications by comparing valence band structures of twisted (5.3°) and nontwisted (AB-stacked) bilayer regions within the same WSe2 device. Relative to the nontwisted region, the twisted area exhibits pronounced moiré bands and ∼90 meV renormalization at the Γ-valley, substantial momentum separation between different layers, and an absence of flat bands at the K-valley. We further simulated the effects of lattice relaxation, which can flatten the Γ-valley edge but not the K-valley edge. Our results provide a direct visualization of twist-induced modifications in the electronic structures of twisted TMDs and elucidate their valley-dependent responses to lattice relaxation.

Influence of structural defects on charge density waves in 1T-TaS2

The influence of intrinsic defects of 1T-TaS2 on charge density waves (CDWs) is studied using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM, STS), angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), and density functional theory (DFT). We identify several types of structural defects and find that most have a local character limited to a single CDW site, with a single exception which effectively behaves as a dopant, leading to band-bending and affecting multiple neighboring sites. While only one type of defect can be observed by STM topographic imaging, all defects are easily resolved in STS mapping. Our results indicate modulation of the Mott band gap commensurate with the CDW and breaking of the three-fold symmetry of electronic states. DFT calculations (with included Coulomb interactions) are used to investigate the electronic structure, focusing on both sulfur vacancy and oxygen-sulfur substitution. The sulfur vacancy system, characterized with a metallic behavior, is identified as the origin of one of the experimentally observed defects. Additionally, the effect of oxidation of 1T-TaS2 depends on the substitution site, leading to the heterogeneity of electronic properties.

Unveiling phase diagram of the lightly doped high-Tc cuprate superconductors with disorder removed

The currently established electronic phase diagram of cuprates is based on a study of single- and double-layered compounds. These CuO2 planes, however, are directly contacted with dopant layers, thus inevitably disordered with an inhomogeneous electronic state. Here, we solve this issue by investigating a 6-layered Ba2Ca5Cu6O12(F,O)2 with inner CuO2 layers, which are clean with the extremely low disorder, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and quantum oscillation measurements. We find a tiny Fermi pocket with a doping level less than 1% to exhibit well-defined quasiparticle peaks which surprisingly lack the polaronic feature. This provides the first evidence that the slightest amount of carriers is enough to turn a Mott insulating state into a metallic state with long-lived quasiparticles. By tuning hole carriers, we also find an unexpected phase transition from the superconducting to metallic states at 4%. Our results are distinct from the nodal liquid state with polaronic features proposed as an anomaly of the heavily underdoped cuprates.

Kondo interaction in FeTe and its potential role in the magnetic order

Finding d-electron heavy fermion states has been an important topic as the diversity in d-electron materials can lead to many exotic Kondo effect-related phenomena or new states of matter such as correlation-driven topological Kondo insulator. Yet, obtaining direct spectroscopic evidence for a d-electron heavy fermion system has been elusive to date. Here, we report the observation of Kondo lattice behavior in an antiferromagnetic metal, FeTe, via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, scanning tunneling spectroscopy and transport property measurements. The Kondo lattice behavior is represented by the emergence of a sharp quasiparticle and Fano-type tunneling spectra at low temperatures. The transport property measurements confirm the low-temperature Fermi liquid behavior and reveal successive coherent-incoherent crossover upon increasing temperature. We interpret the Kondo lattice behavior as a result of hybridization between localized Fe 3dxy and itinerant Te 5pz orbitals. Our observations strongly suggest unusual cooperation between Kondo lattice behavior and long-range magnetic order.

Correlated flat bands and quantum spin liquid state in a cluster Mott insulator

Flat bands are rare in pristine solids and are unstable against electronic correlations or other types of long-range order. Unlike atomic-scale Hubbard systems or Moiré materials, where electronic correlations are either localized or long-ranged, pristine flat band systems with short-range interactions that do not break symmetry spontaneously are less known and intriguing. These systems could bridge the gap between atomic Mott insulators and Moiré correlated insulators, offering a unique platform to explore their mysterious relation. Using an analytical analysis, further verified by numerical calculations, we show that monolayer Nb3Cl8 is a unique flat band system with short-range interactions. We present clear evidence that it is a cluster Mott insulator, which nicely explains the electronic structure observed in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We further propose that monolayer Nb3Cl8 may constitute a rare example of molecular quantum spin liquid with flat bands.

Observation of flat band, Dirac nodal lines and topological surface states in Kagome superconductor CsTi3Bi5

Kagome lattices of various transition metals are versatile platforms for achieving anomalous Hall effects, unconventional charge-density wave orders and quantum spin liquid phenomena due to the strong correlations, spin-orbit coupling and/or magnetic interactions involved in such a lattice. Here, we use laser-based angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations to investigate the electronic structure of the newly discovered kagome superconductor CsTi3Bi5, which is isostructural to the AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb or Cs) kagome superconductor family and possesses a two-dimensional kagome network of titanium. We directly observe a striking flat band derived from the local destructive interference of Bloch wave functions within the kagome lattice. In agreement with calculations, we identify type-II and type-III Dirac nodal lines and their momentum distribution in CsTi3Bi5 from the measured electronic structures. In addition, around the Brillouin zone centre, {{mathbb{Z}}}_{2} nontrivial topological surface states are also observed due to band inversion mediated by strong spin-orbit coupling.

Enhanced thermoelectric performance of SnSe by controlled vacancy population

The thermoelectric performance of SnSe strongly depends on its low-energy electron band structure that provides high density of states in a narrow energy window due to the multi-valley valence band maximum (VBM). Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, in conjunction with first-principles calculations, reveal that the binding energy of the VBM of SnSe is tuned by the population of Sn vacancy, which is determined by the cooling rate during the sample growth. The VBM shift follows precisely the behavior of the thermoelectric power factor, while the effective mass is barely modified upon changing the population of Sn vacancies. These findings indicate that the low-energy electron band structure is closely correlated with the high thermoelectric performance of hole-doped SnSe, providing a viable route toward engineering the intrinsic defect-induced thermoelectric performance via the sample growth condition without an additional ex-situ process.Graphical

Kagome surface states and weak electronic correlation in vanadium-kagome metals

RVSn (R = Y and lanthanides) with two-dimensional vanadium-kagome surface states is an ideal platform to investigate kagome physics and manipulate the kagome features to realize novel phenomena. Utilizing the micron-scale spatially resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we report a systematical study of the electronic structures of RVSn (R = Gd, Tb, and Lu) on the two cleaved surfaces, i.e. the V- and RSn1-terminated (001) surfaces. The calculated bands without any renormalization match well with the main ARPES dispersive features, indicating the weak electronic correlation in this system. We observe ‘W’-like kagome surface states around the Brillouin zone corners showing R-element-dependent intensities, which is probably due to various coupling strengths between V and RSn1 layers. Our finding suggests an avenue for tuning electronic states by interlayer coupling based on two-dimensional kagome lattices.

Realization of 87Rb Bose–Einstein Condensates in Higher Bands of a Hexagonal Boron-Nitride Optical Lattice

Ultracold neutral atoms in higher bands of an optical lattice provide a natural avenue to emulate orbital physics in solid state materials. Here, we report the realization of 87Rb Bose–Einstein condensates in the fourth and seventh Bloch bands of a hexagonal boron-nitride optical lattice, exhibiting remarkably long coherence time through active cooling. Using band mapping spectroscopy, we observe that atoms condensed at the energy minimum of Γ point (K 1 and K 2 points) in the fourth (seventh) band as sharp Bragg peaks. The lifetime for the condensate in the fourth (seventh) band is about 57.6 (4.8) ms, and the phase coherence of atoms in the fourth band persists for a long time larger than 110 ms. Our work thus offers great promise for studying unconventional bosonic superfluidity of neutral atoms in higher bands of optical lattices.

Dirac nodal arc in 1T-VSe2

Transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit many fascinating properties including superconductivity, magnetic orders, and charge density wave. The combination of these features with a non-trivial band topology opens the possibility of additional exotic states such as Majorana fermions and quantum anomalous Hall effect. Here, we report on photon-energy and polarization dependent spin-resolved angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy experiments on single crystal 1T-VSe2, revealing an unexpected band inversion and emergent Dirac nodal arc with spin-momentum locking. Density functional theory calculations suggest a surface lattice strain could be the driving mechanism for the topologically nontrivial electronic structure of 1T-VSe2.

Revalidation of Passalites Gloger, 1841 for the Amazon brown brocket deer P.nemorivagus (Cuvier, 1817) (Mammalia, Artiodactyla, Cervidae).

Mazamanemorivaga (Cuvier, 1817) is a gray brocket deer that inhabits the Amazon region. An assessment of previous studies revealed inconsistencies in its current taxonomic classification, suggesting the need for an update in its genus classification. A taxonomic repositioning of this species is proposed through the collection of a specimen from its type locality (French Guiana) with subsequent morphological (coloring pattern, body measurements, and craniometry), cytogenetics (G Band, C Band, conventional Giemsa, Ag-NOR staining, and BAC probe mapping), and molecular phylogenetic analysis (mitochondrial genes Cyt B of 920 bp, COI I of 658 bp, D-loop 610 bp), and comparisons with other specimens of the same taxon, as well as other Neotropical deer species. The morphological and cytogenetic differences between this and other Neotropical Cervidae confirm the taxon as a unique and valid species. The phylogenetic analysis evidenced the basal position of the M.nemorivaga specimens within the Blastocerina clade. This shows early diversification and wide divergence from the other species, suggesting that the taxon should be transferred to a different genus. A taxonomic update of the genus name is proposed through the validation of Passalites Gloger, 1841, with Passalitesnemorivagus (Cuvier, 1817) as the type species. Future research should focus on evaluating the potential existence of other species within the genus Passalites, as suggested in the literature.

Link between interlayer hybridization and ultrafast charge transfer in WS2-graphene heterostructures

Ultrafast charge separation after photoexcitation is a common phenomenon in various van-der-Waals (vdW) heterostructures with great relevance for future applications in light harvesting and detection. Theoretical understanding of this phenomenon converges towards a coherent mechanism through charge transfer states accompanied by energy dissipation into strongly coupled phonons. The detailed microscopic pathways are material specific as they sensitively depend on the band structures of the individual layers, the relative band alignment in the heterostructure, the twist angle between the layers, and interlayer interactions resulting in hybridization. We used time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with tight binding and density functional theory electronic structure calculations to investigate ultrafast charge separation and recombination in WS2-graphene vdW heterostructures. We identify several avoided crossings in the band structure and discuss their relevance for ultrafast charge transfer. We relate our own observations to existing theoretical models and propose a unified picture for ultrafast charge transfer in vdW heterostructures where band alignment and twist angle emerge as the most important control parameters.

Growth and atomic structure of twisted bilayer graphene formed on Ni(111) by segregation

Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy and intensity analysis of low-energy electron diffraction were used to explore the growth and atomic structure of twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) formed on Ni(111) by segregation of dissolved carbon. tBLG was composed of an epitaxial graphene layer in contact with the substrate and an overlaying rotated one with rotation angles of ∼15°. The top rotated graphene layer has been shown to have little effect on the underlying epitaxial graphene/Ni(111) system, indicating that the adjacent graphene layers are effectively decoupled. The process in which the tBLG gradually became dominant on the surface with repeated heating is discussed.

Charge density wave induced nodal lines in LaTe3

LaTe3 is a non-centrosymmetric material with time reversal symmetry, where the charge density wave is hosted by the Te bilayers. Here, we show that LaTe3 hosts a Kramers nodal line—a twofold degenerate nodal line connecting time reversal-invariant momenta. We use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, density functional theory with an experimentally reported modulated structure, effective band structures calculated by band unfolding, and symmetry arguments to reveal the Kramers nodal line. Furthermore, calculations confirm that the nodal line imposes gapless crossings between the bilayer-split charge density wave-induced shadow bands and the main bands. In excellent agreement with the calculations, spectroscopic data confirm the presence of the Kramers nodal line and show that the crossings traverse the Fermi level. Furthermore, spinless nodal lines—completely gapped out by spin-orbit coupling—are formed by the linear crossings of the shadow and main bands with a high Fermi velocity.
