XII.— Notice of John Smith

John Smith's association with the Geological Society of Glasgow, as ordinary member from 1865 and as honorary member from 1909, extended over the long period of sixty-five years. Accordingly, it seems fitting that a brief notice of his career and a list of his more important publications should be included in the Transactions. He was born on the 14th September, 1845, at Clarkston, near Airdrie. In the following year, however, his father, who was engaged in the mining industry, was transferred to Dalry in North Ayrshire, to superintend the opening of new shafts in the rich ironstone fields of that district. He went to school in Dalry and for some time attended Irvine Academy, and then proceeded to Glasgow to serve his apprenticeship in mining and surveying in the office of Messrs. W. and J. McCreath (now McCreaths and Stevenson). During his five years' residence in the city (about 1863-1868) he made many contacts with scientific workers; he joined the Geological Society, studied botany at Anderson's College under Professor R. Kennedy, well-known as the author of the “Clydesdale Flora,” and attended classes in chemistry and astronomy. On the completion of his apprenticeship he left Glasgow to take up an appointment with Messrs. W. Baird and Co. as under-manager at Lugar and two and a half years later (about 1870) became manager of the Eglinton Ironworks at Kilwinning, a position which he held for some nineteen years. Dr. George Birkbeck and Technical Education

ON December 1, a century ago, Dr. George Birkbeck died in London and was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. His name to–day is recalled by Birkbeck College, London, which began its career as the London Mechanics' Institution with Birkbeck as its president. There were at one time hundreds of such institutions, and no doubt many of them exist to–day, but they may all be said to have sprung from the classes for mechanics started by Birkbeck in 1800 at the Anderson College of Glasgow, in which as a young man of twenty–four he held the chair of natural philosophy. Born in Settle, Yorkshire, on January 10, 1776, Birkbeck studied medicine at Leeds, London and Edinburgh, but he began his active career as a lecturer. In 1804 he set up in practice in the City of London and there became known to Hume, Grote, Brougham, and many other men of liberal ideas. In 1809 he assisted in founding the London Institution, in 1824 became president of the Mechanics' Institution, and was a projector of University College, *nd a supporter of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge. He was, as his biographer J. G. Godard says, a “National Reformer”. In the prospectus of his class of 1800, he stated that it was “for persons engaged in the exercise of the mechanical arts, whose education in early life has precluded even the possibility of acquiring the smallest portion of scientific knowledge”. He lived to see knowledge brought within the reach of all.

Scottish Technical Colleges

THE Royal Technical College, Glasgow, reviews, in its report on the work of the session 1935-36, its own progress since its constitution in 1886 by the amalgamation of Anderson's College with a number of other separate institutions. In these fifty years, the number of its day students has increased from 124 to 1,001 and its gross income from £9,248 to £81,837. Among its more important developments during that time are the establishment of departments of architecture, textile manufacture, navigation, sugar manufacture, pharmacy and bakery, and the erection and equipment of new buildings at a cost of £400,000. Its counterpart in Edinburgh, the Heriot-Watt College, has far fewer day students (364) but its evening class students (2,460) are nearly as many as those of the R.T.C. Both colleges co-operate with city and county education committees in regard to the provision in continuation schools of courses preparatory to college courses. The Edinburgh college, however, records a serious falling off in the number of students from city continuation schools, and attributes this decline to lack of interest on the part of employers.

Prof. David Ellis

PROF. DAVID ELLIS, professor of bacteriology in the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, died suddenly at his home in Bearsden on January 16, aged sixty-two years. He was educated at the University College of Wales, Aberystwyth, and after graduating in the University of London in 1896, taught for some time as a science master in secondary schools. Later he proceeded to the University of Marburg where he gained his Ph.D. degree in 1902, for researches in bacteriology. On returning to Great Britain he again took up science teaching, this time in Dollar Academy, and from there he went, as lecturer in bacteriology and botany, to the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College, the lineal descendant of the old Anderson College, now the Royal Technical College, Glasgow. Later he was appointed professor of bacteriology in the College and superintendent of its Schools of Pharmacy and of Bakery.

Mr. William Rintoul, O.B.E.

MR. WILLIAM RINTOUL died at the age of sixty-six years at his home in Ardrossan, Ayrshire, on August 25, after nearly a year's illness. His career had been a remarkable one, and began in Glasgow, where he was educated and received in Anderson's College his scientific training. In the late ‘eighties there were (as there are even now) few schools of analytical chemistry, so that Mr. R. R. Tatlock not only filled the post of city analyst but also himself lectured and had a staff of lecturers on chemistry and physics to students many of whom afterwards became his assistants and later occupied important positions in the chemical profession. Ramsay was one of them.

CONGRATULATIONS from a wide circle of friends will be extended to Prof. George Forbes, one of our veteran electrical engineers, who celebrates his eighty-first birthday on April 5, having been born in 1849. He is the son of Principal David James Forbes, and graduating in the first instance at the University of St. Andrews, he went on later to Cambridge. Respecting his youthful adventures, our readers will doubtless recall a recent article in the Times by him recounting work as a war correspondent, and impressions, whilst in the service of Delane, the editor of that journal. Forsaking journalism, Forbes embraced a scientific career, becoming in the first instance professor of natural philosophy at Anderson's College, Glasgow, afterwards devoting himself to notable electrical projects. He was electrical engineer for the initial series of installations at Niagara Falls, 1891–95, besides being associated with numerous other undertakings which attest the foresight and skill of the electrical engineers of a pioneer period. In 1887, Prof. Forbes was elected into the fellowship of the Royal Society. He is a Chevalier of the Legion of Honour of France and honorary LL.D. of St. Andrews.

The Management of Medical Research

TWENTY years have now elapsed since I had the honour and pleasure of addressing Anderson's College Medical School at the opening of its winter session of 1903. This is, indeed, only a short interval in cosmic time; for-to use a figure which will exhibit the rapidity of scientific advance nowadays-all these years amount only to twenty vibrations of the electron which we call the earth round its nucleus the sun, in this atom which we name the solar system ! However, for us it has been a considerable period. Many of those who faced me twenty years ago as students are now placed in the seats of the mighty, and will, I hope, support what I have to say to-day. Alas ! two of the faces with which I was then familiar are missing- Prof. R. S. Thomson, dean of the Medical Faculty, and Sir James Marwick; some of the distinguished men who were helping us-Dr. Laveran, Dr. Robert Koch, Sir Patrick Manson, Sir William Osier, Lord Lister, Sir Alfred Jones, Sir Rubert Boyce-are no more; and, above all, I must mourn that great pupil of the School, a ruler of many Colonies, and my own master, friend, and supporter, Sir William MacGregor.

Disciples of Æsculapius

This biographical work will be welcomed by all who love to learn of the old masters in medicine and surgery, and of the work they did. It is written by one who had the happy faculty of telling what he had to tell in a pleasant manner whether by voice or by pen. As a preface or introduction, is given a brief biographical sketch of the author, Sir Benjamin Ward Richardson, by his daughter. He was born in 1828 and entered Anderson's College, Glasgow, as a student in 1845, having among his fellow students one who afterwards gained renown as an African explorer, Dr. David Livingstone. During these student days he had the privilege of being one of the first in his country to witness the use of an anesthetic in a surgical operation.
