The anodic behaviour of titanium in potassium hydroxide solutions has been studied by galvanostatic and potentiostatic methods. The formation of anodic films, with rise of potential with charge passed, has been examined. It is suggested that the observed passivation is caused by the formation of a coherent layer of anatase TiO2, as follows: Ti → Ti2+ + 2e Ti2+ + 4OH− → TiO2 + 2H2O + 2e.
