He holds an honorary Doctorate at Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) in 2005. In 2009 he was inducted into the Danish Academy of Technical Sciences (ATV). Since 2001 he has devoted most of his scientific and R&D to the theme of representative sampling of heterogeneous systems and PAT, respectively.

SEMANTIC INTEGRATION IN GEOSCIENCES

We present an approach for the semantic integration of geoscience data, and a system implementing this approach. Specifically, we demonstrate the use of data ontologies and application of markup languages for semantic integration of data and services. We introduce a domain level object ontology, called Earth and Planetary ONTology (EPONT) to explore, extract, and integrate information from heterogeneous geologic data sets. As proof of concept, we define the DIA engine, an extensible infrastructure for the Discovery, Integration, and Analysis of geoscience data, tools, and services. DIA provides a collaborative environment where scientists can share their resources (e.g., geochemical data, filtering services, etc.) by registering them through well-defined ontologies. We envision the DIA infrastructure to also use other classes of ontologies, namely process and service, for knowledge creation.

Reduction of edge effects in spatial information extraction from regional geochemical data: a case study based on multifractal filtering technique

Spatial information extraction in geoscience data analysis often involves operations, such as filtering and reducing noise/signal ratio that are frequently conducted in the frequency domain. Unfortunately, abrupt truncation of data or images along the edges and holes (with missing data) often cause distortion of patterns in the frequency domain. For example, bright strips on the frequency distribution pattern are often seen when the Fourier transform is used. These artifacts due to edge effects may adversely affect the results of data analysis; the effects can be significant depending on edge abruptness. Traditional solutions to reduce edge effects are to smooth the boundary of the image prior to applying the Fourier transformation. Zero-padding is one of the most frequently used smoothing methods. This simple method can reduce the edge effect to some degree but is ineffective in some applications when the image remains distorted. Moreover, due to the complexity of geoscience data involving irregular shapes and holes with missing data, zero-padding generally does not give satisfactory results. In this paper, decay functions are suggested to handle edge effects in geoscience image analysis. As a case study, it is used in a newly developed multifractal filtering technique: spectrum-area fractal method (S–A) for separating geochemical anomalies from background patterns. A geochemical data set chosen from a mineral district in Nova Scotia, Canada was used for validating the method. Optimal parameters including extension width and computational load involved in the selection of decay functions are experimentally determined and documented in this study.

SIMSAG: Integrated computer system for use in evaluation of mineral and energy resources

A system of interactive graphic computer programs for multivariate statistical analysis of geoscience data (SIMSAG)has been developed to facilitate the construction of statistical models to evaluate potential mineral and energy resources from geoscience data. The system provides an integrated interactive package for graphic display, data management, and multivariate statistical analysis. It is specifically designed to analyze and display spatially distributed information which includes the geographic locations of observations. SIMSAG enables the users not only to perform several different types of multivariate statistical analysis but also to display the data selected or the results of analyses in map form. In the analyses of spatial data, graphic displays are particularly useful for interpretation, because the results can be easily compared with known spatial characteristics of the data. The system also permits the user to modify variables and select subareas imposed by cursor. All operations and commands are performed interactively via a graphic computer terminal. A case study is presented as an example. It consists of the construction of a statistical model for evaluating potential areas for explorations of uranium from geological, geophysical, geochemical, and mineral occurrence map data quantified for equalarea cells in Kasmere Lake area in Manitoba, Canada.
