Review about the history of thermal analysis in Hungary

AbstractThis review discusses the development of the Derivatograph in the 1950s and the history of thermal analysis in Hungary. This device was the first commercial simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) instrument of the world. It initiated the development of thermal analysis and its application possibilities in a wide range during the second half of the last century. As a result, very strong thermoanalytical schools were established in Hungary, and the first thermoanalytical journal in the world, i.e., the Journal of Thermal Analysis was started in 1969, which is still a leading journal in the field, now under the title of Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry. In addition, several periodicals and books were published in thermal analysis in Hungary. In the paper, the most important Hungarian thermal analysis-related associations, events, acknowledgements and awards are also mentioned, together with names of major Hungarian researchers in this field. Presently, beside the internationally acknowledged research groups and the JTAC, the flagship of the Hungarian thermal analysis is the Journal of Thermal Analysis and Calorimetry Conference (JTACC) series.

Types of human trace evidences and the importance of their forensic genetic analysis in Hungarian criminal and administrative proceedings – Case reports

Aim: The aim of the study is to present widely and successfully analysed exhibits and crime scene samples of human origin in forensic genetic examinations through short case reports of various types of Hungarian cases from the last decades. By presenting actual cases the study also aims to comprehensively depict the great importance of forensic genetic analysis in Hungarian jurisdiction.Methodology: For this study, 51 cases representing 22 case types were chosen out of several thousand closed cases investigated by the Hungarian Institute for Forensic Science. Forensic genetic analysis of the presented exhibits and traces gave investigative leads and evidence for solving crime cases or for the identificationof unknown bodies, if the relevant biological material remains can be found and recorded at the scene.Findings: Since the launch of forensic genetic analysis in Hungary in 1992, it has gradually become possible to provide genetic evidence for criminal and public administration proceedings by DNA analysis of an increasing number and variety of human biological material residues in a growing number and variety of cases (from theft to serial murders). The presented 51 cases of 22 case types may provide proof of the applicability of forensic genetic methodology in almost any case in Hungary, provided the relevant exhibits and biological traces are found and collected at the (crime) scenes.Value: This is the first comprehensive case report review that presents the various types and the importance of human trace pieces of evidence analysed with forensic genetic methods in 22 case types of 51 Hungarian criminal and administrative proceedings.

Diverse Sexual Definitions and Their Predictors Among Adolescents: A Multilevel Analysis in Hungary

IntroductionInconsistency of sexual definitions may lead to misunderstandings when evaluating research data or delivering health education. Diverse sexual definitions are especially common with unidirectional genital contacts (only one participant is involved with their genitals). Our aim was to analyze sexual definitions of adolescents and the role of age, gender, previous sexual experience, anxiety, and body image as possible determinants of unidirectional intimate behavior definitions.MethodsPooled cross-sectional survey data of 9th-grade Hungarian students (n = 612, mean age = 16.1 years, range from 15 to 18 years) were used from the baseline assessment (conducted in 2019 and 2020) of the Balassagyarmat Health Education Program. Our questionnaire was based on the Sexual Definitions Survey. The associations of definition of manual and oral stimulation with gender, age, sexual experience, trait anxiety, and body image were further examined in a multilevel logistic regression model.ResultsThe rating of different sexual behaviors as sex showed a hierarchy from kissing (10.3%) to vaginal intercourse (98.5%). Manual and oral stimulation was claimed to be sex by 73.4% and 84.3% of students. Girls (OR = 0.40; CI = 0.25–0.62) and older participants (OR = 0.75; CI = 0.59–0.96) were less likely to consider manual stimulation as sex. Conversely, previous sexual experience, anxiety, and body image were not significant predictors.ConclusionsOur study is the first to investigate sexual definitions among non-English-speaking adolescents. It contributes to the understanding of ambiguity regarding the definitions of oral and manual stimulation in this specific age group.Policy implicationsAs adolescents are the primary focus of sexual education, policies should take into consideration the semantic differences in sexual definitions, as these may influence the participants’ interpretation of information and have an effect on their sexual behavior.

The Education of Military Intelligence Analysis in Hungary

The author presents the education of military intelligence analysis in the last four decades, which he divided into three periods. These periods well illustrate the stages of development of intelligence analysis in Hungary. The result of this development process is the current education of military intelligence analysis, as the three periods are built on each other. Nowadays, the education of intelligence analysis takes place at the Institute of National Security of the National University of Public Service. This education-based program was approved in 2012 and later accredited. This program already presents the intelligence analysis in a complex way, and it is not just about analysing information and making reports, but about the complex problem-solving activities. The development of the current education began in 2009, but it is still going on because it needs to constantly adapt to the current development of theory and practice of intelligence analysis. The study presents the main elements of the education of intelligence analysis, as well as provides a future perspective on the direction in which the theory of intelligence analysis work needs to develop.

The involvement of stakeholders in the decarbonization process in the coal region of Northern Hungary

This article deals with the analysis of Hungary’s still-existing coal region (Northern Hungary), including the future of coal mining and energy production. Within the interpretive tradition of social research, we approached the problem and explored the role and significance of the Mátra Power Plant in the country and the coal region. The results show that there has been widespread involvement in the field of coal removal, Just Transition and that it is important for decision-makers and energy policy stakeholders in the country and the region to have a say. It also helps to shape discourses and bring out alternative views.

Traffic Analysis of Specific Motorways with Different Usage Characteristics in Hungary with the Method of Section Control

This article presents the result of the large-scale average speed analysis made in Hungary at two motorways in 12 different sections. During the analysis speeds of normal and reduced operations were analysed. This is the first analysis in Hungary which is based on real traffic data. Data from the enforcement system of the road usage right were used and these data were provided by the Hungarian National Toll Payment Service Plc. Results have shown that the majority of the drivers are not obey the speed limits, which has huge risk on traffic safety.

Aspects and methods for examining the connection between personal names and ethnicity
 It is a difficult task to determine the value of proper names in ethnic reconstruction. This can be considered a dubious area of onomastic/linguistic and historical research. Even the explanation of the basic concepts seems to be problematic; still, defining ethnicity and identifying the nature of the connection between ethnicity and language cannot be avoided. It is also important to define the value of the different types of personal names as sources: what can and cannot the research into the etymology of surnames be used for, what are the factors that have an impact on linguistic recon-struction, how can individual names help ethnic reconstruction, etc. After summarizing the back-ground research of name analysis in Hungary, the author presents a multi-level method of ethnic reconstruction based on personal names. The procedure tries to separate the determination of the name’s etymology from that of the ethnic affiliation, placing the examination objectives at separate levels. On the first level, the etymology of the surnames is determined and the linguistic background of the name is explored by considering linguistic aspects only, paying attention to the rules of ety-mological and onomastic research. The author separates two levels of the examination of ethnic reconstruction that are built upon each other. On the one hand, the linguistic features of the indi-vidual names are observed, and then other information on name sociology (e.g. social status, majority population), referring directly or indirectly to ethnic background, is taken into consideration.

Effect of Interaction between Traits of Different Genotype Maize in Six Fertilizer Level by GGE Biplot Analysis in Hungary

Abstract Hungary was one of the main countries in the world as regards the yields reached in maize production. The research was conducted to appraise the effect of NPK fertilizer on traits of different hybrid maize (Fao410, Fao340) at the University of Debrecen and our experiment was carried out in Centre for Agricultural Sciences, Institute of Crop Sciences at Látókép in 2018. NPK fertilizer was applied in six different combinations (0-0-0 control, 30-23-27 first dose, 60-46-54 second dose, 90-69-81 third dose, 120-92-108 fourth dose and 150-115-135 fifth dose kg · ha−1). The result of compound variance showed the level of fertilizer and interaction between fertilizer and genotypes were significant in one percent. Effect of genotypes was a variable level of fertilizer and providing a different yield in the level of fertilizer. The weight of seeds in ear and weight of ear were important traits in the average yield on Fao410 hybrid. Also, the fourth of the fertilizer level was the best level of fertilizer for yield on Fao410 and Fao340. the weight of fresh plant and weight of seeds in ear were highest relation with yield in H340 hybrid. The results of this research can successfully contribute to the science of maize cultivars, the given adapted hybrid to the discovery of their traits and to an application of fertilizers.

Legislation of forensic DNA analysis in Hungary - past, present and future

Ever since the first application of DNA analysis in criminal casework in 1992, the conditions under which forensic DNA analysis is performed within the Hungarian law have been developed and subsequently approved, in parallel with the establishment of a national database report of forensic DNA. Act XLVII of 2009 (on the Criminal Records System, on the Records of EU Member State Court Rulings against Hungarian Citizens as well as on the Records of Biometric Criminal and Law Enforcement Data) constituted the legal framework for this. Moreover, Act XXIX of 2016 (on Judicial Experts), Act CXII of 2011 (on the Right of Informational Self-Determination and on Freedom of Information), as well as Regulation 12/2016. (V.4.) of the Minister of Interior (on Rules of Taking Fingerprints, Palm prints, Photographs and DNA samples), as well as the Provisions of 31/2008. (XII. 31.) of the Minister of Local Government (on the work of forensic experts, respectively) went on to specify the professional requirements necessary for forensic DNA analysis.The regulations of the EU must also be taken into consideration. Of particular significance, are the escalations undertaken by the EU for the purpose of combating transnational crime as developed in the Prüm Treaty, and, under Council Decision 2008/615/JHA and Council Decision 2008/616/JHA, became ratified into its partial transformation into an EU-wide tool for cooperation. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) has also introduced a new and seemingly far-reaching exemption to the general prohibitive conditions applied to the processing of genetic data. The question of whether, and which kind of, consent is required remains left to other applicable EU and national laws.The aim of this study is to provide an overview on how Hungarian legislation of forensic DNA has changed over the past 27 years, to illustrate the current legal context in addition to providing a conceptual theoretical framework for future legislation, including the rules of forensic DNA typing and legal regulation connected to DNA-databases.

Taxation as a Means of Migration Control: The Case of Hungary

This article shows that different types of interactions can arise between taxation and migration policies. Migration leads to tax consequences and, at the same time, taxation can influence migration. An analysis of Hungary's special immigration tax seems to suggest that it is the latest example of a broader policy shift to control migration. Taxation is being used as a means to deal with the aftermath of the so-called ‘European migration crisis’ of 2015, during which EU Member States struggled to provide a coordinated and efficient response to a sharp increase in the arrival of asylum seekers. Although taxation can be a policy instrument to achieve regulatory objectives, the use of taxation to regulate migration is questionable and may lead to violations of human rights.

He has developed and perfected a series of methods of volumetric and gravimetric analysis. Its original method, developed in 1888 for the determination of dissolved oxygen in water, is still used today. Winkler Lajos also played an important role in the development of pharmaceutical education in Hungary

Sport Involvement Analysis in Hungary, in the North Great Plain Region

On a global level, a healthy lifestyle is experienced more where sport and physical activity as a way of life has gained more importance. European Union documents (such as the White Paper on Sport—2007) further stressed the important role of physical activity, and member states have declared the same opinion. Almost all scientific research approaches the topic by measuring the sport-related activity rate and incidence. The findings of Eurobarometer (2014) revealed that 41% of responding European citizens pursue some kinds of sport or do some form of body movement once a week, while 59% rarely or never do. In Hungary, compared to the findings of 2009, activity improved. Still, 44% of Hungarian citizens never undertake any sports activity. Pursuing sport and showing interests in a more active lifestyle are indicators that may truly reflect the social connection between sport and the society itself, and we may apply both terms in the framework of engagement. These terms lead us to the topic of sport related involvement, including social, psychological, and economic dimensions. In a large sample representative survey, carried out among Hungarian people in the North Great plain region, we aimed to reveal the specifications of sport engagement and our empirical findings have proved a very strong connection between sport and the population itself.

Mapping the Post-communist Class Structure: Findings from a New Multidimensional Hungarian Class Survey

In this article, we define a schema for the class structure of Hungary, in which we consider a case for an Eastern-European capitalist system emerging from post-communist societies. Our schema is based on the findings of the Hungarian Class Survey, 2014. Using six measures of Bourdieusian economic, cultural, and social capital and applying the methodology of latent class analysis (LCA), we have constructed a model of eight LCA-based classes: upper class, cultural middle class, affluent middle class, young urban consumers, network-embedded rural workers, young drifters, middle-aged deprived, and the precariat. Hungarian society seems to be quite hierarchical but is also fragmented within the upper and lower strata. Status inconsistency in terms of possessing economic, cultural, and social capital is strongly present even for the middle classes. There is a clear divide in our class model between the upper four and the lower four classes, in terms of vertical and nonvertical aspects of social stratification. We also compare our new multidimensional class typology to the traditional occupation-based one and demonstrate its added value for class analysis in Hungary.

Socioeconomic and religious differentials in marital fertility during the fertility transition: A micro-level study from Western Hungary, 1850–1939

The analysis of fertility decline and its socioeconomic and cultural determinants during the demographic transition is a topic that is rarely researched in Hungary. So far, the question has been examined only at country and regional levels, with the help of aggregate data. Much like the international research on historical demography, little attention has been paid to non-aggregate data and to the micro level. Previous family reconstitution studies, which can be regarded as the most feasible and prevalent method for micro-level analysis in Hungary, focused only on the analysis of pre-transitional fertility. We know, however, that on the one hand, in many communities irreversible fertility decline did not start before World War I, and on the other hand, the analysis of the transitional period offers more opportunities to better understand the background of changing fertility behaviour. The aim of the present paper is to investigate the socioeconomic and denominational differentials in marital fertility in a rapidly industrializing Western Transdanubian community, which was heterogeneous in these respects. The analysis covers the pre-transitional period and the fertility transition, mainly from the second part of the 19th century up to World War II. This period of the Hungarian demographic transition has never been examined at micro level. According to the results, the upper groups of the local society had higher fertility compared to others prior to the transition, but the socioeconomic patterns of childbearing changed during the 1870s–1880s. First, local elite groups began to decrease their family size. They were followed later by local craftsmen and skilled workers, then by smallholders, and finally by semi-skilled and unskilled workers. The fertility of Lutherans was slightly lower than that of Roman Catholics, but this can be explained by the different demographic and socioeconomic composition of these denominational groups. Fertility transition on the spot meant not only parity-specific birth control, but also increasing birth intervals, which was particularly significant in the period of the Great Depression (1929–1933).

Populist Polarization and Party System Institutionalization

The institutionalization of party politics is supposed to contribute to the consolidation of democracies. Analysis of Hungary’s democratic backsliding shows, however, that this is not necessarily the case. This article demonstrates that the combination of populist party strategies, polarized party relations, and the inertia of the party system constitutes a significant challenge (here labeled “populist polarization”) to the consolidation of liberal democracy. After considering the applicability of structuralist and transitologist frameworks to the political dynamics in Hungary, the article differentiates the notion of populist polarization from similar concepts and argues that populist polarization in the region poses a more acute danger to high-quality democracy than the much-feared under-institutionalized and fragmented configurations of party politics.

“Strategic Problems of Agribusiness Development and Environmental Burden in Light of Life Cycle Analysis in Hungary”

Hungary, based on former Soviet Union market had had a relatively developed agro-food sector before the system –change up to the eighties of last century. In our days this system has collapsed, and the Hungarian agro-food complex can be characterised by extensive arable-crops production. There are numerous plans to develop the agriculture and food sector. The one emphasises the importance of energy –crop production. Another approach is based on intensive production, establishment of local food supply, and short food supply systems. Ecologic consequences of these strategies are analysed by life cycle approach, based on combined application of different open-source LCA software. Different solutions of packaging can we compare by OpenLCA software.

Late autumn trophic flexibility of the golden jackalCanis aureus

The feeding habits of the golden jackal Canis aureus (Linnaeus, 1758) were compared using scat analysis in Hungary (temperate climate agricultural area), Greece (Mediterranean marshland), and Israel (Mediterranean agricultural area). Samples (84, 70 and 64 scats, respectively) were collected during late autumn, a period with capital importance to the long term survival of young jackals, during which they become independent. Predation of wild-living prey species was highest in Hungary, consisting primarily of small mammals (biomass estimation: 51.5%, mainly rodents), contrary to Israel and Greece, where scavenging on domestic animals dominated the diet of jackals (74%, mainly poultry and 62.6%, mainly goats, respectively). The highest consumption of wild ungulates (mainly wild boar) was found in Greece (15.7%), and plants in Hungary (39%). Bird consumption was low in all three areas. Reptiles, amphibians and fish occurred only in the diet of jackals in Greece and Israel, whereas invertebrates were eaten more frequently in Hungary. Jackal dietary composition was extremely variable between regions, strongly associated with human presence. These results illustrate the golden jackal as having a very variable diet, resulting from opportunistic feeding habits.

Converging human resource management: a comparative analysis of Hungary and Turkey

This study is a comparative examination of human resource management (HRM) in Turkey, as an EU candidate country, and Hungary, as a recent member of the EU. After a brief review of the literature on the convergence and divergence debate in HRM, the similarities and differences in HRM in Turkey and Hungary are empirically investigated. In the research, HRM in the two countries is compared in four dimensions: the HR departments' structure; the top HR managers' characteristics and qualifications; the strategic nature of HRM; and HR practices. The research was conducted in the banking sector. In total 50 banks (32 banks from Turkey and 18 banks from Hungary) participated in the research with an overall response rate of 53%. The data obtained are analyzed via the Mann–Whitney U test. The results are descriptive in nature. Except for the differences observed, especially in HR departments' organizational structures, the findings provide evidence for convergence of HRM in the two countries.

Europeanization, Domestic Legacies and Administrative Reforms in Central and Eastern Europe: A Comparative Analysis of Hungary and the Czech Republic

In this paper, I explore how European dynamics and domestic legacies interact in generating a specific pattern of change at the domestic level. Specifically, I examine the different impacts of the European Union (EU) on the adoption of administrative reforms in Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries in the 1990s and the early 2000s. I claim that the EU’s influence on the reforms was mediated by the reformist legacies of preceding communist regimes in those countries. While the EU affected the reforms through the mechanism of anticipation in countries with strong reformist legacies, the influence of the EU flowed through the mechanism of conditionality in countries with weak reformist legacies. I illustrate my case through a comparative analysis of Hungary and the Czech Republic.
