Analyzing atmospheric plasma's potential for diesel soil remediation: Insightful mechanisms

The remediation of diesel-contaminated soil is a critical environmental concern, driving the need for effective solutions. Recently, the methodology of Non-thermal Atmospheric Plasma (NTAP) technology, which is equipped with a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) electrode and has become a feasible approach, was proven to be viable. The reactive species from the plasma were exposed to the contaminated soil in this investigation using the NTAP technique. The reacted soil was then extracted using dichloromethane, and the amount of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) removed was assessed. Investigation into varying power levels, treatment durations, and hydrogen peroxide integration revealed significant findings. With an initial concentration of 3086 mg of diesel/kg of soil and a pH of 5.0, 83% of the diesel was removed from the soil at 150 W in under 20 min. Extended exposure to NTAP further improved removal rates, highlighting the importance of treatment duration optimization. Additionally, combining hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) with NTAP enhanced removal efficiency by facilitating diesel breakdown. This synergy offers a promising avenue for comprehensive soil decontamination. Further analysis considered the impact of soil characteristics on removal efficacy. Mechanistically, NTAP generates reactive species that degrade diesel into less harmful compounds, aiding subsequent removal. Overall, NTAP advances environmental restoration efforts by offering a quick, economical, and environmentally benign method of remediating diesel-contaminated soil especially when used in tandem with hydrogen peroxide.

Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons in Soil of Different Oil Fields at Basrah Governorate, Iraq

Objectives: This study concentrated on determining the total hydrocarbon concentrations in soil at eleven stations of the oil field (Seba, Safwan, Majnoon, Ratawi, Bergezia, Qurna2, Qurna1, Shuaaba, South and North Rumaila, and Al Zubair). Methods: Soil samples were freeze-dried, finely pulverised in an agate mortar, and sieved through a 62-um metal sieve and 150 ml mixture of methanol and benzene (1:1) was used to extract the soil. Determination of TPHs where determined by using Spectrofluroscence, Total organic carbons (TOC) in the soil of the oil fields were also determined. Results: According to the TPH distribution used in this investigation, station 11 (Al Zubair) had the highest concentration of TPHs (162.53mg/g dry weight), while station 1(Seba) had the lowest concentration (21.4mg/g dry weigh). Additionally, the study's findings demonstrated that TPH levels varied spatially amongst sites. The highest amounts of total petroleum hydrocarbons detected in soil samples, as well as the findings of this investigation indicating that TPH levels varied geographically throughout stations. Conclusions: There is significant correlation between the TPH in soil and TOC%. By comprising the result concentration of this study with literature reviews, the concentration levels lies within it and in other cases exceed it.

Maximizing diesel removal from contaminated sand using Scirpus mucronatus and assessment of rhizobacteria addition effect

Phytoremediation is one of the green technologies that is friendly to nature, utilizes fewer chemicals, and exhibits good performance. In this study, phytoremediation was used to treat diesel-contaminated sand using a local aquatic plant species, Scirpus mucronatus, by analyzing the amount of total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs). Optimization of diesel removal was performed according to Response Surface Methodology (RSM) using Box-Behnken Design (BBD) under pilot-scale conditions. The quadratic model showed the best fit to describe the obtained data. Actual vs. predicted values from BBD showed a total of 9.1 % error for the concentration of TPH in sand and 0 % error for the concentration of TPH in plants. Maximum TPH removal of 42.3 ± 2.1 % was obtained under optimized conditions at a diesel initial concentration of 50 mg/kg, an aeration rate of 0.48 L/min, and a retention time of 72 days. The addition of two species of rhizobacteria (Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus licheniformis) at optimum conditions increased the TPH removal to 51.9 ± 2.6 %. The obtained model and optimum condition can be adopted to treat diesel-contaminated sand within the same TPH range (50–3000 mg/kg) in sand.

As the document of national strategy for Iraqi environment protection from(2013-2017) shows that the environmental awareness concepts is new in the Iraqi society and so limited due to the economic and security priorities under the current conditions, especially aqua environmental awareness side, for verifying this important variable an investigation was carried out to measure the amount of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon for six water channels in Basrah, which polluted from different sources, these are Al Garmah River, Shatt Al Arab(Corniesh street location), (Abu Floos, Khor Al Zubair, Umm Qasr, and Al Fao ) Ports. The highest concentration of TPH was found inUmm Qasr Port, 22.10 µg/L and the lowest concentration of TPH was found in Al Garmah River, 5.35 µg/L.

Degradation of petroleum pollutants in oil-based drilling cuttings using an Fe2+-based Fenton-like advanced oxidation processes.

Oil-based drilling cuttings (OBDC) contain a large amount of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) pollutants, which are hazardous to the environment. In this study, Fe2+-activating hydrogen peroxide (Fe2+/H2O2), peroxymonosulfate (Fe2+/PMS), and peroxydisulfate (Fe2+/PDS) advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) were used to treat OBDC due to the difference in the degradation capacity of TPH caused by the type of free radical generated and effective activation conditions observed for the different oxidants studied. The results showed that the oxidant concentration, Fe2+ dosage, and reaction time in the three AOPs were greatly positively correlated with the TPH removal rate in a certain range. The initial pH value had a significant effect on the Fe2+/H2O2 process, and its TPH removal rate was negatively correlated in the pH range from 3 to 11. However, the Fe2+/PMS and Fe2+/PDS processes only displayed lower TPH removal rates under neutral conditions and tolerated a wider range of pH conditions. The optimal TPH removal rates observed for the Fe2+/H2O2, Fe2+/PMS, and Fe2+/PDS processes were 45.04%, 42.75%, and 44.95%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer analysis showed that the alkanes in OBDC could be effectively removed using the three processes studied, and their degradation ability toward straight-chain alkanes was in the order of Fe2+/PMS > Fe2+/PDS > Fe2+/H2O2, among which Fe2+/PMS exhibited the optimal removal effect for aromatic hydrocarbons. Scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction results showed no significant changes in the elemental and mineral composition of OBDC before and after treatment. Therefore, this study provided a theoretical reference for the effective degradation of TPH pollutants in OBDC.

Bioremediation of Soil Contaminated with Spent Engine Oil using Pig Dung

Studies were carried out to investigate the bioremediation potential of pig dung in a soil contaminated with spent engine oil. Soil samples were obtained from the Ofrima complex, University of Port Harcourt. The soil samples were contaminated with various concentrations (50 ml and 100 ml) of spent engine oil and allowed for 21 days for proper exposure, mimicking natural spill. This was followed by the addition of the pig dung. The experimental setup was labeled sample A (1 kg soil + 100 g pig dung + 50 ml spent engine oil) and sample B (1 kg soil + 100 g pig dung + 100 ml spent engine oil). The physicochemical parameters and the microbiological analysis were done using standard methods. The total petroleum hydrocarbon was analyzed using gas chromatographic methods. Analyses were carried out at 14 days intervals for 28 days. The physicochemical parameter results showed a reduction in pH values in the contaminated soil samples, ranging from 6.21 - 6.65 in sample A and 6.57 - 6.87 in sample B. Temperature values were constant at 230C from day 1 to day 14 in sample A and increased at day 28 to 24 0C, also for sample B, the temperature was constant at 230C from day 1 to day14 and increased at day 28 to 26 0C. The amount of heavy metal (Lead) content decreased from 4.3645 - 1.93676 (mg/kg) and 6.18361 - 3.89654 (mg/kg) for samples A and B, respectively. There was also a significant reduction in the amount of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon, from 16631.86 - 3280.83 mg/kg for sample A and 18464.73 - 6784.60 mg/kg for sample B. The THB counts for samples A and B ranged from 7.73 - 7.91 and 7.05-8.20 (Log cfu/g), respectively. The fungal counts ranged from 3.99–4.58 and 5.12 - 7.93 (Log cfu/g) for samples A and B respectively. HUB counts ranged from 4.52–5.09 and 4.93- 5.55 (Log cfu/g) for samples A and B, respectively. The HUF counts ranged from 4.12 - 5.49 and 4.13 - 4.70 (Log cfu/g) for samples A and B, respectively. The results clearly showed that microorganisms capable of utilizing total petroleum hydrocarbon were present, also the pig dung showed both bio-stimulation and bio-augmentation tendency to attract high microbial load which supported the bioremediation of the spent engine oil contaminated soil.

The Effects of Oil Spill Eater II on Oil Degradation

Background: Hydrocarbon contamination is considered to be a crucial environmental pollutant, which threatens the marine ecosystem and indirectly affects human health. Petrochemical industries are among the major sources of oil release into the environment. Several approaches are used to remove hydrocarbons from contaminated water, including biological, mechanical, and chemical methods. Oil Spill Eater II (OSE II) is an EPA-listed liquid nutrient with enzymes for the removal of hydrocarbons or other organic contaminants, which has also been proposed for the elimination of oil contaminates worldwide. Objectives: The present study aimed to evaluate the effects of OSE II on hydrocarbon degradation from contaminated seawater. Methods: In accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer, a combination of seawater and crude oil of various regions was prepared with a specific proportion. The amount of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) before the addition of OSE II and after the treatment with OSE II was analyzed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: The maximum removal rate of TPH from seawater was within the range of 59-75.5% after the OSE II treatment and 7-15 days of aeration. In addition, GC-MS indicated that the initial sharp peaks declined substantially due to the impact of OSE II on the destruction of hydrocarbon chains. Conclusions: According to the results, OSE II exhibited a high potential for the degradation of petroleum hydrocarbons.

Characterization of Athabasca lean oil sands and mixed surficial materials: Comparison of capillary electrophoresis/low-resolution mass spectrometry and high-resolution mass spectrometry.

Oil sands mining in Alberta, Canada, requires removal and stockpiling of considerable volumes of near-surface overburden material. This overburden includes lean oil sands (LOS) which cannot be processed economically but contain sparingly soluble petroleum hydrocarbons and naphthenic acids, which can leach into environmental waters. In order to measure and track the leaching of dissolved constituents and distinguish industrially derived organics from naturally occurring organics in local waters, practical methods were developed for characterizing multiple sources of contaminated water leakage. Capillary electrophoresis/positive-ion electrospray ionization low-resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (CE/LRMS), high-resolution negative-ion electrospray ionization Orbitrap mass spectrometry (HRMS) and conventional gas chromatography/flame ionization detection (GC/FID) were used to characterize porewater samples collected from within Athabasca LOS and mixed surficial materials. GC/FID was used to measure total petroleum hydrocarbon and HRMS was used to measure total naphthenic acid fraction components (NAFCs). HRMS and CE/LRMS were used to characterize samples according to source. The amounts of total petroleum hydrocarbon in each sample as measured by GC/FID ranged from 0.1 to 15.1mg/L while the amounts of NAFCs as measured by HRMS ranged from 5.3 to 82.3mg/L. Factors analysis (FA) on HRMS data visually demonstrated clustering according to sample source and was correlated to molecular formula. LRMS coupled to capillary electrophoresis separation (CE/LRMS) provides important information on NAFC isomers by adding analyte migration time data to m/z and peak intensity. Differences in measured amounts of total petroleum hydrocarbons by GC/FID and NAFCs by HRMS indicate that the two methods provide complementary information about the nature of dissolved organic species in a soil or water leachate samples. NAFC molecule class Ox Sy is a possible tracer for LOS seepage. CE/LRMS provides complementary information and is a feasible and practical option for source evaluation of NAFCs in water.

Insights into microbial communities mediating the bioremediation of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil from an Alpine former military site

The study of microbial communities involved in soil bioremediation is important to identify the specific microbial characteristics that determine improved decontamination rates. Here, we characterized bacterial, archaeal, and fungal communities in terms of (i) abundance (using quantitative PCR) and (ii) taxonomic diversity and structure (using Illumina amplicon sequencing) during the bioremediation of long-term hydrocarbon-contaminated soil from an Alpine former military site during 15 weeks comparing biostimulation (inorganic NPK fertilization) vs. natural attenuation and considering the effect of temperature (10 vs. 20 °C). Although a considerable amount of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) loss could be attributed to natural attenuation, significantly higher TPH removal rates were obtained with NPK fertilization and at increased temperature, which were related to the stimulation of the activities of indigenous soil microorganisms. Changing structures of bacterial and fungal communities significantly explained shifts in TPH contents in both natural attenuation and biostimulation treatments at 10 and 20 °C. However, archaeal communities, in general, and changing abundances and diversities in bacterial and fungal communities did not play a decisive role on the effectiveness of soil bioremediation. Gammaproteobacteria and Bacteroidia classes, within bacterial community, and undescribed/novel groups, within fungal community, proved to be actively involved in TPH removal in natural attenuation and biostimulation at both temperatures.

Bioremediation of Diesel-contaminated Soil by Composting with Locally Generated Bulking Agents

ABSTRACTHerein, we conducted a study toward understanding the impact of composting of the diesel-contaminated soil with some locally available bulking agents (rice husks (RHs), sawdust (SD), and wood chips (WCs)). In order to ascertain the effectiveness of petroleum degradation by the process assayed, we compared the protocols with monitored natural attenuation (MNA). The overall degradation pattern was modeled with non-linear regression by comparing the experimental data with first and second-order kinetic equations. At the end of the six-week study, the amount of total petroleum hydrocarbon removed from contaminated soil was 98.26 ± 1.33% (amendment with SD + RHs + WCs), 96.89 ± 1.20 (RHs amendment), 96.55 ± 1.29% (amendment with SD), 90.01 ± 0.22% (WCs amendment), and 85.02 ± 0.21% (MNA). The degradation of TPH trends followed a second-order kinetic model for all the four compost treatments while the MNA was found to follow a first-order (slower) degradation pattern. In general, the results of the parameter estimate showed that amendment with mixture of the three bulking agents was 1.08 (8%) slower (k2 = (1.289 ± 0.16) × 10−5 (g mg−1 d−1), r2 = 0.991) than SD amendment alone (k2 = (1.392 ± 0.14) × 10−5 (g mg−1 d−1), r2 = 0.995). However, the mixture of the bulking agents was found to be 1.67, 1.41, and 2.4 times faster than amendments with WCs, rice, and MNA, respectively. The phytotoxicity test revealed that all the compost treatments except WCs resulted in germination index of ≥80% after six weeks of bioremediation tests. The outcome of the current investigation confirms the effectiveness of bulking agents (especially when combined) in the supply of nutrients for the bioremediation of diesel-impacted soil.

Assessing spatial variability of soil petroleum contamination using visible near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy

Visible near-infrared (VisNIR) diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) is a rapid, non-destructive method for sensing the presence and amount of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) contamination in soil. This study demonstrates the feasibility of VisNIR DRS to be used in the field to proximally sense and then map the areal extent of TPH contamination in soil. More specifically, we evaluated whether a combination of two methods, penalized spline regression and geostatistics could provide an efficient approach to assess spatial variability of soil TPH using VisNIR DRS data from soils collected from an 80 ha crude oil spill in central Louisiana, USA. Initially, a penalized spline model was calibrated to predict TPH contamination in soil by combining lab TPH values of 46 contaminated and uncontaminated soil samples and the first-derivative of VisNIR reflectance spectra of these samples. The r(2), RMSE, and bias of the calibrated penalized spline model were 0.81, 0.289 log(10) mg kg(-1), and 0.010 log(10) mg kg(-1), respectively. Subsequently, the penalized spline model was used to predict soil TPH content for 128 soil samples collected over the 80 ha study site. When assessed with a randomly chosen validation subset (n = 10) from the 128 samples, the penalized spline model performed satisfactorily (r(2) = 0.70; residual prediction deviation = 2.0). The same validation subset was used to assess point kriging interpolation after the remaining 118 predictions were used to produce an experimental semivariogram and map. The experimental semivariogram was fitted with an exponential model which revealed strong spatial dependence among soil TPH [r(2) = 0.76, nugget = 0.001 (log(10) mg kg(-1))(2), and sill 1.044 (log(10) mg kg(-1))(2)]. Kriging interpolation adequately interpolated TPH with r(2) and RMSE values of 0.88 and 0.312 log(10) mg kg(-1), respectively. Furthermore, in the kriged map, TPH distribution matched with the expected TPH variability of the study site. Since the combined use of VisNIR prediction and geostatistics was promising to identify the spatial patterns of TPH contamination in soils, future research is warranted to evaluate the approach for mapping spatial variability of petroleum contaminated soils.
