Hypophysectomy causes the following alterations in rat-liver cells: 1. 1. An increased concentration of clumped chromatin (heterochromatin) which is distributed throughout the nucleoplasm. 2. 2. Decrease in cytoplasmic volume. 3. 3. Loss of particulate glycogen after 15 h of fasting. 4. 4. Decrease in amount of smooth endoplasmic reticulum per cell. 5. 5. Decrease in amount and a disorganization of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. 6. 6. Decrease in the number of ribosomes and polysomes per cell. 7. 7. A concentration per unit volume of cytoplasm and swelling of mitochondria.
