The Genomes of Three Uneven Siblings: Footprints of the Lifestyles of Three Trichoderma Species.

The genus Trichoderma contains fungi with high relevance for humans, with applications in enzyme production for plant cell wall degradation and use in biocontrol. Here, we provide a broad, comprehensive overview of the genomic content of these species for "hot topic" research aspects, including CAZymes, transport, transcription factors, and development, along with a detailed analysis and annotation of less-studied topics, such as signal transduction, genome integrity, chromatin, photobiology, or lipid, sulfur, and nitrogen metabolism in T. reesei, T. atroviride, and T. virens, and we open up new perspectives to those topics discussed previously. In total, we covered more than 2,000 of the predicted 9,000 to 11,000 genes of each Trichoderma species discussed, which is >20% of the respective gene content. Additionally, we considered available transcriptome data for the annotated genes. Highlights of our analyses include overall carbohydrate cleavage preferences due to the different genomic contents and regulation of the respective genes. We found light regulation of many sulfur metabolic genes. Additionally, a new Golgi 1,2-mannosidase likely involved in N-linked glycosylation was detected, as were indications for the ability of Trichoderma spp. to generate hybrid galactose-containing N-linked glycans. The genomic inventory of effector proteins revealed numerous compounds unique to Trichoderma, and these warrant further investigation. We found interesting expansions in the Trichoderma genus in several signaling pathways, such as G-protein-coupled receptors, RAS GTPases, and casein kinases. A particularly interesting feature absolutely unique to T. atroviride is the duplication of the alternative sulfur amino acid synthesis pathway.

Mode of Action of MCB3681 in Staphylococcus aureus– a Proteomic Study

Background: MCB3681, a novel quinolonyl-oxazolidinone antibacterial, is active against quinolone- and/or linezolidresistant Gram-positive bacteria. Thus, MCB3681 may interact with other targets than quinolones and oxazolidinones. Methods and Findings: Protein expression in S. aureus following short-term exposure to MCB3681 was analyzed using 2D-gel electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF-MS/MS. Synthesis of 13 and 16 proteins was induced or repressed, respectively. Among the induced proteins are four ribosomal proteins. Repressed are proteins from different amino acid synthesis pathways, two aminoacyl-tRNAsynthetases, and methicillin-resistance-factor-protein FemB. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that the impact of MCB3681 on the proteome signature of treated S. aureus cells is different from that of either ciprofloxacin or linezolid.

Baleen whales host a unique gut microbiome with similarities to both carnivores and herbivores

Mammals host gut microbiomes of immense physiological consequence, but the determinants of diversity in these communities remain poorly understood. Diet appears to be the dominant factor, but host phylogeny also seems to be an important, if unpredictable, correlate. Here we show that baleen whales, which prey on animals (fish and crustaceans), harbor unique gut microbiomes with surprising parallels in functional capacity and higher level taxonomy to those of terrestrial herbivores. These similarities likely reflect a shared role for fermentative metabolisms despite a shift in primary carbon sources from plant-derived to animal-derived polysaccharides, such as chitin. In contrast, protein catabolism and essential amino acid synthesis pathways in baleen whale microbiomes more closely resemble those of terrestrial carnivores. Our results demonstrate that functional attributes of the microbiome can vary independently even given an animal-derived diet, illustrating how diet and evolutionary history combine to shape microbial diversity in the mammalian gut.

High hydrostatic pressure increases amino acid requirements in the piezo-hyperthermophilic archaeon Thermococcus barophilus

We have established a defined growth medium for the piezophilic hyperthermophilic archaeon Thermococcus barophilus, which allows growth yields of ca. 108 cells/ml under both atmospheric and high hydrostatic pressure. Our results demonstrate a major impact of hydrostatic pressure on amino acid metabolism, with increases from 3 amino acids required at atmospheric pressure to 17 at 40 MPa. We observe in T. barophilus and other Thermococcales a similar discrepancy between the presence/absence of amino acid synthesis pathways and amino acid requirements, which supports the existence of alternate, but yet unknown, amino acid synthesis pathways, and may explain the low number of essential amino acids observed in T. barophilus and other Thermococcales. T. barophilus displays a strong metabolic preference for organic polymers such as polypeptides and chitin, which may constitute a more readily available resource of carbon and energy in situ in deep-sea hydrothermal vents. We hypothesize that the low energy yields of fermentation of organic polymers, together with energetic constraints imposed by high hydrostatic pressure, may render de novo synthesis of amino acids ecologically unfavorable. Induction of this metabolic switch to amino acid recycling can explain the requirement for non-essential amino acids by Thermococcales for efficient growth in defined medium.

Identification of new Saccharomyces cerevisiae variants of the MET2 and SKP2 genes controlling the sulfur assimilation pathway and the production of undesirable sulfur compounds during alcoholic fermentation.

BackgroundWine yeasts can produce undesirable sulfur compounds during alcoholic fermentation, such as SO2 and H2S, in variable amounts depending mostly on the yeast strain but also on the conditions. However, although sulfur metabolism has been widely studied, some of the genetic determinants of differences in sulfite and/or sulfide production between wine yeast strains remain to be identified. In this study, we used an integrated approach to decipher the genetic determinants of variation in the production of undesirable sulfur compounds.ResultsWe examined the kinetics of SO2 production by two parental strains, one high and one low sulfite producer. These strains displayed similar production profiles but only the high-sulfite producer strain continued to produce SO2 in the stationary phase. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that the low-sulfite producer strain overexpressed genes of the sulfur assimilation pathway, which is the mark of a lower flux through the pathway consistent with a lower intracellular concentration in cysteine. A QTL mapping strategy then enabled us to identify MET2 and SKP2 as the genes responsible for these phenotypic differences between strains and we identified new variants of these genes in the low-sulfite producer strain. MET2 influences the availability of a metabolic intermediate, O-acetylhomoserine, whereas SKP2 affects the activity of a key enzyme of the sulfur assimilation branch of the pathway, the APS kinase, encoded by MET14. Furthermore, these genes also affected the production of propanol and acetaldehyde. These pleiotropic effects are probably linked to the influence of these genes on interconnected pathways and to the chemical reactivity of sulfite with other metabolites.ConclusionsThis study provides new insight into the regulation of sulfur metabolism in wine yeasts and identifies variants of MET2 and SKP2 genes, that control the activity of both branches of the sulfur amino acid synthesis pathway and modulate sulfite/sulfide production and other related phenotypes. The emerging role of complex modifications of tRNALysUUU in signaling pathways.

Coordination of cell growth with nutrient availability, in particular amino acids, is a central problem that has been solved by the implementation of complex regulatory cascades. Although the specific regulatory mechanisms differ between kingdoms and species, a common theme is the use of tRNA molecules as sensors and transducers of amino acid starvation. In many bacteria, amino acid starvation leads to high levels of uncharged tRNAs, a signal for the synthesis of the stringent response’s alarmones, halting transcription of stable RNAs and inducing the synthesis of amino acid synthesis pathways 1. In gram-positive Bacteria (as well as the Deinococcus-Thermus clade), uncharged tRNAs bind structures (T-boxes) in the leader sequences of mRNA encoding gene, activating the expression of genes involved in amino acid metabolism 2. In eukaryotes, the conserved General Amino Acid Control (GAAC) response is triggered by shortage of amino acids that leads to the binding of uncharged tRNAs to Gcn2 kinase and, through a cascade of events, to the activation of the central activator of amino acid synthesis genes, Gcn4 3. As the study by Scheidt et al. 4 and several other recent studies in this field reveal, variations in charging levels are not the only mechanism by which tRNAs play a role in amino acid starvation responses; levels of post-transcriptional modifications also seem to play major roles.

The draft genome, transcriptome, and microbiome of Dermatophagoides farinae reveal a broad spectrum of dust mite allergens

A sequenced house dust mite (HDM) genome would advance our understanding of HDM allergens, a common cause of human allergies. We sought to produce an annotated Dermatophagoides farinae draft genome and develop a combined genomic-transcriptomic-proteomic approach for elucidation of HDM allergens. A D farinae draft genome and transcriptome were assembled with high-throughput sequencing, accommodating microbiome sequences. The allergen gene structures were validated by means of Sanger sequencing. The mite's microbiome composition was determined, and the predominant genus was validated immunohistochemically. The allergenicity of a ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase binding protein homologue was evaluated with immunoblotting, immunosorbent assays, and skin prick tests. The full gene structures of 20 canonical allergens and 7 noncanonical allergen homologues were produced. A novel major allergen, ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase binding protein-like protein, was found and designated Der f 24. All 40 sera samples from patients with mite allergy had IgE antibodies against rDer f 24. Of 10 patients tested, 5 had positive skin reactions. The predominant bacterial genus among 100 identified species was Enterobacter (63.4%). An intron was found in the 13.8-kDa D farinae bacteriolytic enzyme gene, indicating that it is of HDM origin. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis revealed a phototransduction pathway in D farinae, as well as thiamine and amino acid synthesis pathways, which is suggestive of an endosymbiotic relationship between D farinae and its microbiome. An HDM genome draft produced from genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic experiments revealed allergen genes and a diverse endosymbiotic microbiome, providing a tool for further identification and characterization of HDM allergens and development of diagnostics and immunotherapeutic vaccines.

The metabolic potential of Escherichia coli BL21 in defined and rich medium

BackgroundThe proteome reflects the available cellular machinery to deal with nutrients and environmental challenges. The most common E. coli strain BL21 growing in different, commonly employed media was evaluated using a detailed quantitative proteome analysis.ResultsThe presence of preformed biomass precursor molecules in rich media such as Luria Bertani supported rapid growth concomitant to acetate formation and apparently unbalanced abundances of central metabolic pathway enzymes, e.g. high levels of lower glycolytic pathway enzymes as well as pyruvate dehydrogenase, and low levels of TCA cycle and high levels of the acetate forming enzymes Pta and AckA. The proteome of cells growing exponentially in glucose-supplemented mineral salt medium was dominated by enzymes of amino acid synthesis pathways, contained more balanced abundances of central metabolic pathway enzymes, and a lower portion of ribosomal and other translational proteins. Entry into stationary phase led to a reconstruction of the bacterial proteome by increasing e.g. the portion of proteins required for scavenging rare nutrients and general cell protection. This proteomic reconstruction during entry into stationary phase was more noticeable in cells growing in rich medium as they have a greater reservoir of recyclable proteins from the translational machinery.ConclusionsThe proteomic comparison of cells growing exponentially in different media reflected the antagonistic and competitive regulation of central metabolic pathways through the global transcriptional regulators Cra, Crp, and ArcA. For example, the proteome of cells growing exponentially in rich medium was consistent with a dominating role of phosphorylated ArcA most likely a result from limitations in reoxidizing reduced quinones in the respiratory chain under these growth conditions. The proteomic alterations of exponentially growing cells into stationary phase cells were consistent with stringent-like and stationary phase responses and a dominating control through DksA-ppGpp and RpoS.

A systems level engineered E. coli capable of efficiently producing L-phenylalanine

The biosynthesis of L-phenylalanine (Phe) is one of the most complicated amino acid synthesis pathways. In this study, the engineering of Phe producer was carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of systems level engineering: (1) inactivated glucose specific phosphoenolpyruvate-carbohydrate phosphotransferase (PTS) system by inactivation of crr to moderate the glucose uptake rate to reduce overflow metabolism; (2) genetic switch on or off the expression of phefbr, aroG15, ydiB, aroK, and tyrB to increase the supply of precursors; (3) employed a tyrA mutant strain to reduce carbon diversion and to result in non-growing cells; (4) enhanced the efflux of Phe by overexpressing yddG to shift equilibrium towards Phe synthesis and to release the feedback regulation in Phe synthesis. The mutants in PTS were firstly compared and a crr− mutant was firstly screened. The mutant AroG15 was demonstrated to a thermostable mutant. The strains expressing yddG excreted Phe into the medium at higher rate and less intracellular Phe accumulated. By systems level engineering, an engineered Phe producer achieved 47.0g/L Phe with a yield of 0.252g/g which was the highest under the non-optimized fermentation condition.

Nitrogen metabolism in plants under low oxygen stress

More frequent flooding and waterlogging events due to more heavy precipitation are expected worldwide in the context of climate change. Accordingly, adaptation of plants to oxygen limitation at both cellular and whole plant levels should be investigated thoroughly, that derived knowledge could be taken into account in breeding programs and agronomical practices for saving plant fitness, growth and development even when oxygen availability is low. In the present review, we highlight current knowledge on essential aspects of low oxygen stress-induced changes in nitrogen metabolism. The involvement of two possible pathways for NO production either via the reaction catalyzed by nitrate reductase or at Complex III or IV of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, thus contributing to ATP synthesis via the so-called nitrite-NO respiration, is discussed. NO is proposed to be scavenged by non-symbiotic hemoglobin (Hb) in a Hb/NO cycle, in which NAD(P)H is oxidized for the conversion of NO into NO3(-). The investigation of an additional adaptation to the decrease in oxygen availability via transcriptional and posttranslational regulation of amino acid synthesis pathways, using publicly available transcriptome and translatome data for Arabidopsis thaliana and rice is also discussed.

Maintenance of essential amino acid synthesis pathways in the Blattabacterium cuenoti symbiont of a wood-feeding cockroach

In addition to harbouring intestinal symbionts, some animal species also possess intracellular symbiotic microbes. The relative contributions of gut-resident and intracellular symbionts to host metabolism, and how they coevolve are not well understood. Cockroaches and the termite Mastotermes darwiniensis present a unique opportunity to examine the evolution of spatially separated symbionts, as they harbour gut symbionts and the intracellular symbiont Blattabacterium cuenoti. The genomes of B. cuenoti from M. darwiniensis and the social wood-feeding cockroach Cryptocercus punctulatus are each missing most of the pathways for the synthesis of essential amino acids found in the genomes of relatives from non-wood-feeding hosts. Hypotheses to explain this pathway degradation include: (i) feeding on microbes present in rotting wood by ancestral hosts; (ii) the evolution of high-fidelity transfer of gut microbes via social behaviour. To test these hypotheses, we sequenced the B. cuenoti genome of a third wood-feeding species, the phylogenetically distant and non-social Panesthia angustipennis. We show that host wood-feeding does not necessarily lead to degradation of essential amino acid synthesis pathways in B. cuenoti, and argue that ancestral high-fidelity transfer of gut microbes best explains their loss in strains from M. darwiniensis and C. punctulatus.

Enhanced production of l-phenylalanine in Corynebacterium glutamicum due to the introduction of Escherichia coli wild-type gene aroH

Metabolic engineering is a powerful tool which has been widely used for producing valuable products. For improving L-phenylalanine (L-Phe) accumulation in Corynebacterium glutamicum, we have investigated the target genes involved in the biosynthetic pathways. The genes involved in the biosynthesis of L-Phe were found to be strictly regulated genes by feedback inhibition. As a result, overexpression of the native wild-type genes aroF, aroG or pheA resulted in a slight increase of L-Phe. In contrast, overexpression of aroF (wt) or pheA (fbr) from E. coli significantly increased L-Phe production. Co-overexpression of aroF (wt) and pheA (fbr) improved the titer of L-Phe to 4.46 ± 0.06 g l⁻¹. To further analyze the target enzymes in the aromatic amino acid synthesis pathway between C. glutamicum and E. coli, the wild-type gene aroH from E. coli was overexpressed and evaluated in C. glutamicum. As predicted, upregulation of the wild-type gene aroH resulted in a remarkable increase of L-Phe production. Co-overexpression of the mutated pheA (fbr) and the wild-type gene aroH resulted in the production of L-Phe up to 4.64 ± 0.09 g l⁻¹. Based on these results we conclude that the wild-type gene aroH from E. coli is an appropriate target gene for pathway engineering in C. glutamicum for the production of aromatic amino acids.

have shown that enzymes in branched chain amino acid (BCAA) synthesis pathways could be suitable targets for anti-microbial agents. In contrast, pl ants, algae, fungi, bacteria, and archaea synthesize these BCAAs, but animals do not.The anabolic enzyme, acetoh ydroxyacid synthase (AHAS; EC 2.2.1.6) catalyzes the first step in the biosynthesis of the BCAAs valine, leucine, and isoleucine. AHAS, in common with several other enzymes that cataly ze the decarboxylation of 2- ketoacids, uses thiamine diphosphate (ThDP) as a cofactor and also requires a divalent metal ion to anchor ThDP in the active site.

The Interplay of Proton, Electron, and Metabolite Supply for Photosynthetic H2 Production in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

To obtain a detailed picture of sulfur deprivation-induced H(2) production in microalgae, metabolome analyses were performed during key time points of the anaerobic H(2) production process of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Analyses were performed using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS), two-dimensional gas chromatography combined with time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GCxGC-TOFMS), lipid and starch analysis, and enzymatic determination of fermentative products. The studies were designed to provide a detailed metabolite profile of the solar Bio-H(2) production process. This work reports on the differential analysis of metabolic profiles of the high H(2)-producing strain Stm6Glc4 and the wild-type cc406 (WT) before and during the H(2) production phase. Using GCxGC-TOFMS analysis the number of detected peaks increased from 128 peaks, previously detected by GC/MS techniques, to ∼1168. More detailed analysis of the anaerobic H(2) production phase revealed remarkable differences between wild-type and mutant cells in a number of metabolic pathways. Under these physiological conditions the WT produced up to 2.6 times more fatty acids, 2.2 times more neutral lipids, and up to 4 times more fermentation products compared with Stm6Glc4. Based on these results, specific metabolic pathways involving the synthesis of fatty acids, neutral lipids, and fermentation products during anaerobiosis in C. reinhardtii have been identified as potential targets for metabolic engineering to further enhance substrate supply for the hydrogenase(s) in the chloroplast.

Branched tricarboxylic acid metabolism in Plasmodium falciparum.

A central hub of carbon metabolism is the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle1, which serves to connect the processes of glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, respiration, amino acid synthesis and other biosynthetic pathways. The protozoan intracellular malaria parasites (Plasmodium spp.), however, have long been suspected of possessing a significantly streamlined carbon metabolic network in which TCA metabolism plays a minor role2. Blood-stage Plasmodium parasites rely almost entirely on glucose fermentation for energy and consume minimal amounts of oxygen3, yet the parasite genome encodes all of the enzymes necessary for a complete TCA cycle4. By tracing 13C-labeled compounds using mass spectrometry5 we show that TCA metabolism in the human malaria parasite P. falciparum is largely disconnected from glycolysis and is organized along a fundamentally different architecture than the canonical textbook pathway. We find that this pathway is not cyclic but rather a branched structure in which the major carbon sources are the amino acids glutamate and glutamine. As a consequence of this branched architecture, several reactions must run in the reverse of the standard direction thereby generating two-carbon units in the form of acetyl-coenzyme A (acetyl-CoA). We further show that glutamine-derived acetyl-CoA is used for histone acetylation while glucose-derived acetyl-CoA is used to acetylate aminosugars. Thus the parasite has evolved two independent acetyl-CoA-production mechanisms with different biological functions. These results significantly clarify our understanding of the Plasmodium metabolic network and highlight the ability of altered variants of central carbon metabolism to arise in response to unique environments.

Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of Yeast Mitochondrial Biogenesis: Transcriptional and Post-Transcriptional mRNA Oscillatory Modules

Examples of metabolic rhythms have recently emerged from studies of budding yeast. High density microarray analyses have produced a remarkably detailed picture of cycling gene expression that could be clustered according to metabolic functions. We developed a model-based approach for the decomposition of expression to analyze these data and to identify functional modules which, expressed sequentially and periodically, contribute to the complex and intricate mitochondrial architecture. This approach revealed that mitochondrial spatio-temporal modules are expressed during periodic spikes and specific cellular localizations, which cover the entire oscillatory period. For instance, assembly factors (32 genes) and translation regulators (47 genes) are expressed earlier than the components of the amino-acid synthesis pathways (31 genes). In addition, we could correlate the expression modules identified with particular post-transcriptional properties. Thus, mRNAs of modules expressed “early” are mostly translated in the vicinity of mitochondria under the control of the Puf3p mRNA-binding protein. This last spatio-temporal module concerns mostly mRNAs coding for basic elements of mitochondrial construction: assembly and regulatory factors. Prediction that unknown genes from this module code for important elements of mitochondrial biogenesis is supported by experimental evidence. More generally, these observations underscore the importance of post-transcriptional processes in mitochondrial biogenesis, highlighting close connections between nuclear transcription and cytoplasmic site-specific translation.

Norvaline is accumulated after a down-shift of oxygen in Escherichia coli W3110

BackgroundNorvaline is an unusual non-proteinogenic branched-chain amino acid which has been of interest especially during the early enzymological studies on regulatory mutants of the branched-chain amino acid pathway in Serratia marcescens. Only recently norvaline and other modified amino acids of the branched-chain amino acid synthesis pathway got attention again when they were found to be incorporated in minor amounts in heterologous proteins with a high leucine or methionine content. Earlier experiments have convincingly shown that norvaline and norleucine are formed from pyruvate being an alternative substrate of α-isopropylmalate synthase, however so far norvaline accumulation was not shown to occur in non-recombinant strains of E. coli.ResultsHere we show that oxygen limitation causes norvaline accumulation in E. coli K-12 W3110 during grow in glucose-based mineral salt medium. Norvaline accumulates immediately after a shift to oxygen limitation at high glucose concentration. On the contrary free norvaline is not accumulated in E. coli W3110 in aerobic cultures. The analysis of medium components, supported by transcriptomic studies proposes a purely metabolic overflow mechanism from pyruvate into the branched chain amino acid synthesis pathway, which is further supported by the significant accumulation of pyruvate after the oxygen downshift. The results indicate overflow metabolism from pyruvate as necessary and sufficient, but deregulation of the branched chain amino acid pathway may be an additional modulating parameter.ConclusionNorvaline synthesis has been so far mainly related to an imbalance of the synthesis of the branched chain amino acids under conditions were pyruvate level is high. Here we show that simply a downshift of oxygen is sufficient to cause norvaline accumulation at a high glucose concentration as a consequence of the accumulation of pyruvate and its direct chain elongation over α-ketobutyrate and α-ketovalerate.Although the flux to norvaline is low, millimolar concentrations are accumulated in the cultivation broth, which is far above the level which has been discussed for being relevant for misincorporation of norvaline into recombinant proteins. Therefore we believe that our finding is relevant for recombinant protein production but also may even have implications for the physiology of E. coli under oxygen limitation in general.

Unravelling the regulatory structure of biochemical networks using stimulus response experiments and large-scale model selection

To unravel the complex in vivo regulatory interdependences of biochemical networks, experiments with the living organism are absolutely necessary. Stimulus response experiments (SREs) have become increasingly popular in recent years. The response of metabolite concentrations from all major parts of the central metabolism is monitored over time by modem analytical methods, producing several thousand data points. SREs are applied to determine enzyme kinetic parameters and to find unknown enzyme regulatory mechanisms. Owing to the complex regulatory structure of metabolic networks and the amount of measured data, the evaluation of an SRE has to be extensively supported by modelling. If the enzyme regulatory mechanisms are part of the investigation, a large number of models with different enzyme kinetics have to be tested for their ability to reproduce the observed behaviour. In this contribution, a systematic model-building process for data-driven exploratory modelling is introduced with the aim of discovering essential features of the biological system. The process is based on data pre-processing, correlation-based hypothesis generation, automatic model family generation, large-scale model selection and statistical analysis of the best-fitting models followed by an extraction of common features. It is illustrated by the example of the aromatic amino acid synthesis pathway in Escherichia coli.

Proteome Analysis of Tobacco Bright Yellow-2 (BY-2) Cell Culture Plastids as a Model for Undifferentiated Heterotrophic Plastids

We analyzed the proteome of undifferentiated plastids from a tobacco BY-2 cell culture by shotgun proteomics following multidimensional protein fractionation. The fractionation strategy initiated with the serial extraction of proteins from membranes which allowed us to distinguish soluble, peripheral, and integral membrane proteins. The majority of the identified proteins have a function in the cellular metabolism and most of them are active in amino acid synthesis pathways. A significant number of the identified proteins was not identified in chloroplast proteome analyses before. This suggests BY-2 plastid specific functions that differ from the major activities of chloroplasts. We have used the BY-2 plastid proteins reported here to assess the metabolic activities of undifferentiated heterotrophic plastids and compared the functional profile with that of differentiated heterotrophic amyloplasts. Comparative shotgun proteome analyses as reported here provide information about prevalent metabolic activities of different plastid types.
