Frontiers in microelectronics and thin film components

This paper is the text of an address delivered by the outgoing president of the American Vacuum Society at the Society’s annual meeting in 1979. Following a brief outline of the mission, functions, and organization of the Society, a discussion of trends in the fabrication of modern microelectronics is presented together with an outline of the Society’s activities which contribute toward these trends. The address concludes with a consideration of the consequences of these trends for the American Vacuum Society and an indication of the unique roles of a multidisciplinary organization like the American Vacuum Society in the American Institute of Physics.

The American Vacuum Society: A multidisciplinary organization

This presentation is based upon that which was to be given by the Society President at the 25th National Symposium of the American Vacuum Society, 29 November 1978, in San Francisco, California. The talk to the Society by its President was an innovation of the 1979 Program Committee. The intention is that such a presentation be given each year at the awards acceptance plenary session along with those of the Welch and, when appropriate, Gaede–Langmuir awards. To be discussed are the recent highlights of Society activity, the direction the Society is taking, and an example of the multidisciplinary activities of Society members.

Vacuum Society meets in Boston

Boston is the site for the 24th National Vacuum Symposium of the American Vacuum Society, which will be held 8–11 November at the Sheraton‐Boston Hotel. A technical exhibit will be presented in the John B. Hynes Civic Auditorium, which is adjacent to the hotel. These symposium facilities are both part of the Prudential Center complex, centrally located in downtown Boston on Boylston Street.

Diffusion Pump Technology

A paper reviewing the advances in diffusion pump technology was presented by the author at the 1972 Symposium of the American Vacuum Society. The material presented here is intended to be complementary to that review with additional thoughts about the basic operation of the pumps, their speed efficiency, the influence of power variation on their performance, heat transfer in the boiler and transient backstreaming effects in the crossover pressure region between mechanical vacuum pumps and diffusion pumps. Several figures of merit which determine the quality of performance are indicated. In most cases they are non-dimensional ratios defining certain aspects of performance and most can be improved in pumps of current designs but not without sacrifice of other qualities. The discussion is limited to oil diffusion pumps. System performance and auxiliary devices such as baffles and traps are only mentioned whenever directly relevant.

The First Twenty Years of the American Vacuum Society

This year, 1973, is the twentieth anniversary of the formation of the American Vacuum Society, and it is thus appropriate to review the development and growth of the Society. This brief history describes the formation of the Society and the first year of its existence and lists the officers of the Society over the years and the location of annual symposia. Various activities of the Society are described such as the symposia, educational activities, publications divisions and sections, and scholarships and awards.
