A Historical Ethnography in the Making: Jewish Entrepreneurs in an American Mill Town, 1890–1940: (A Self-Reflexive Account)

East European Labourers in an American Mill Town, 1890-1940: The Deferential-Proletarian-Privatized Workers?

Using the Lockwoodian typology of deferential, proletarian, and privatized working-class consciousness, this social-historical analysis reconstructs and compares the kinds of social representations held by East European workers of the immigrant and native-born generations in an American mill town in the period 1890-1940. Exemplifying and extending the newer literature on class consciousness and social imagery, the paper shows (1) how and which influences of a micro- and macroscopic nature shaped the social meaning-systems of East European workers; and (2) how and under which circumstances their images of the social order formed complex, fragmented, and multivalent configurations.

Death and Rebirth of the American Mill Town

THE PROBLEM OF POWER in nineteenth century mill towns rests on a conflict between employer absolutism and the democratic rights of the employees. The treatment of power in recent community studies has been inadequate. This is particularly true in works influenced by symbolic anthropology, where the problem is seen to have been resolved in a consensual value system. However, the persistence of conflict in strikes and disorder compels an examination of the mechanisms of domination, as well as legitimacy. To this end, the ideas of Marx and Weber offer more valuable guidance than those of Durkheim. AU XIXe siecle, le pouvoir dans les villes industrielles demeure le lieu de conflits entre l'absolutisme des employeurs et le droit democratique des employes. L'auteur note l'insuffisance de l'analyse de ce pouvoir dans les etudes recentes. Cela est particulierement vrai dans les travaux influences par l'anthropologie symbolique ou on resout le probleme en faisant appel a des valeurs bon-ententistes. Cependant, la persistance de conflits et de desordres force a examiner les mecanismes de domination aussi bien que ceux qui legitiment le systeme. A cette fin, la pensee de Marx et Weber offre plus d'interet que celle de Durkheim.

Portrait of an American Mill Town: Demographic Response in Mid-Nineteenth Century Warren, Rhode Island

Abstract Utilizing census and vital statistics records, the author demonstrates how low levels of fertility in a nineteenth-century New England mill town are closely interrelated with the economic and social structure of the community. The ready availability of relatively unskilled job opportunities drew large numbers of foreign-born women to this community leading to an imbalance in the sex ratios in the primary marrying ages and a subsequent low percentage of women married. This relative unavailability of marriage partners for the women was further aggravated by a strong unwillingness of men and women to marry outside their own ethnic group. Partly as a result of this unusual marriage pattern, fertility in this nineteenth-century industrial town was well below the level necessary to ensure the long term maintenance of the community.
