This essay presents my practice of teaching Chinese American literature in China, mainly from the perspective of constructing courses, writing, and editing books on the subject. Thus, my discussion is more empirical than theoretical. The essay consists of four parts. In the first part, I review my American literature teaching in China years ago and discuss why it was necessary to open up new ways to teach it. The second part demonstrates what I have done to construct a framework for Chinese American literature teaching, primarily by working on textbooks providing canonical Chinese American literature, necessary background knowledge, and related methods of criticism. I trace how I moved from handouts to publishing an anthology, and the rationale behind my choice of teaching materials.
