Some Unpublished Letters of John R. Thompson and Augustin Louis Taveau

Among the many contributors to The Southern Literary Messenger during the editorship of John R. Thompson, from November, 1847, to May, 1860, was Augustin Louis Taveau (1828-1886), a native of Charleston, South Carolina, and a member of a prominent family that numbered among its connections Sir Walter Scott, Hugh Swinton Legare, and Paul Hamilton Hayne. After practicing law at the Charleston bar, Taveau traveled abroad and married Miss Delphine Sprague, the daughter of Horatio Sprague, the American Consul at Gibraltar. Returning with his wife to his rice plantation near Charleston, he sold his slaves, bought Confederate bonds, and went to Richmond to join the Confederacy. After the Civil War he found his wealth, as well as his art collection and library, destroyed, and he turned to farming along the Potomac in Maryland to recoup his losses. Like that of many other Southern poets, Taveau's profession was law, but his practice was poetry. During his lifetime he contributed many fugitive verses under his pen name, Alton, to such magazines as The Southern Literary Journal, The Southern Literary Messenger, DeBow's Review, and The Southern Literary Gazette. The Vindication: A Satire (Charleston, John Russell, 1848), one of his earlier poems, attracted the attention of William Gilmore Simms:

Oil Resources of Ecuador

Seepages of oil in Ecuador have been known for many years. The localityfirst to receive attention, and still worked in a modest way, lies on the northshore of the Santa Elena peninsula, between La Puntilla and Salinas. Operationswere first conducted largely by local capital. Later, foreign companiesacquired large blocks of land, where they have done considerable drilling. Fordetails concerning present drilling activities in Ecuador, we are indebted toLeon Price, an American resident engineer of Ecuador. The information solicitedcame to the author through the office of the American Consulate, withpermission to use it. The coastal plain bordering the Province of Tumbes, Peru, continues to thenortheast, but narrows on passing the Zarumilla River. From this pointnorthward it widens toward Santa Rosa. In fact, the pampas, as shown on theofficial Wolf map, correspond fairly well to the areal extent of the coastalplain as far as Guayaquil. This is shown in a general way on the accompanyingmap. The author understands that the Guayaquil embayment is bordered on allsides by the coastal plain, as recognized at Tumbes and farther southwest, andthat it can be followed without a break as far north as Palmar. This view issupported by the mapped area regarded by Mr. Price as favorable or possible oilterritory. Moreover the islands in the Gulf of Guayaquil are the samegeologically as the coastal edge, being composed of Tertiary sediments. Theauthor understands also that Tertiary formations occur north of Palmar.According to a report by Mr. Cardon, of Guayaquil, Tertiary sediments areexposed in the region of San Francisco and extend to and beyond Pta. Calera.There is also reason to believe that at least the lower part of the valley ofthe Santiago River is occupied by Tertiary sediments, which probably border thecoast line and extend into the River Mira basin, and into Colombia. On the south coast there are many seepages, most of them near the inner edgeof the coastal plain, between Zarumilla and Santa Rosa and also between SantaRosa and Machala. AIME 068–72

To the Editor: —In view of Dr. W. G. Hathaway's request for information as to laws regulating the practice of medicine in Mexico, inThe Journal, April 19, 1913, p. 1247, my experience may be of interest. I graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, in 1898. I made an attempt to comply with the laws of the state of Coahuila regarding the practice of medicine. I began to obtain the desired information or certificates in the latter part of 1910, and quit in disgust in 1912 after spending between two and three hundred dollars and obtaining no results whatever. I employed a lawyer and sought advice from the American consul, directed me to Judge —, who was very reliable and would give me all necessary information. Later on I discovered that he was a judge, but a judge of bull fights. This so-called judge directed me to a notary

A VISIT TO "JESUS HILFE" OR THE LEPROUS HOSPITAL OF JERUSALEM.

During a recent visit to Palestine it was my pleasure to inquire into the condition of the lepers of that country and pay a visit to the Jesus Hilfe Asylum. Through the courtesy of our American consul, I was most cordially received by the superintendent and physician in charge, Dr. Einsler, and conducted through the institution. Every available opportunity was given me to study the disease with a view of bringing home to the profession of Minnesota, where the affection at present exists, some information as to its prevalence in the Orient, where from time immemorial, so to speak, it has had its home. Notwithstanding the fact that Jesus Hilfe Hospital is one of the best equipped of its kind in the world, and is an imposing stone building surrounded by luxuriantly blooming gardens, the average tourist is content to view it from a distance. Medical News.

Dr. Edmund C. Brushof Zanesville, Ohio, has been appointed surgeon-general on the staff of the governor of that state. Kielreports twenty-eight women students at the university, only sixteen unmarried. Five are between 50 and 70 years of age. A CABLEGRAM states that Dr. Green of Alabama, U. S. Marine-Hospital Service, has been detailed as medical attache to the American consulate at Bremen, for the inspection of immigrants. Dr. Robert Fletcher, principal assistant librarian of the Surgeon-General's library, Washington, D. C., will begin a course of lectures on forensic medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Jan. 5, 1900. An exhibitof the literature on the subject of sanatoria for consumptives was opened last month at Wiesbaden, on the initiative of the local physicians, in view of the proposed erection of a sanatorium at Nassau. The American Excavations in Southern Babylonia

FOR the last fifteen or sixteen years we have been glad to watch the endeavours of the Americans to carry out systematic excavations in Southern Babylonia, and we feel sure that all will rejoice with them now that they are able to report a very considerable success. It will be remembered that the first American to visit that country with a view of acquiring antiquities was Mr. Hayes Ward, who went out there early in the “eighties”; and the report which he gave on the matter probably helped forward the later expeditions of Dr. Peters and Mr. Haynes. Dr. Peters and a small party of promising young men went to Baghdad in 1890, and set out from that city for the ruins of Niffer, which are situated a few days' journey to the south-west, where they began to dig. For various reasons, however, Dr. Peters withdrew from the work soon afterwards, and the Committee of Excavations of Pennsylvania University determined to place the undertaking in the hands of Mr. Haynes, then the American Consul at Baghdad. Mr. Haynes took over the work, and for some years past he has devoted all his time to it, through the heats of summer when the land is burnt as hard as a brick, and through the rains of winter and early spring when the plains become seas of mud, has he lived at Niffer, patiently digging through the ruins of the temple, and tower, and ramparts, and courtyard, and hidden chambers of that ancient city. No other excavator has done his work so thoroughly, or so well in consequence, for he never left his post whilst, diggings were going on; and though the cuneiform scholar sitting in a comfortable chair at home reading the descriptions of the work by Dr. Hilprecht1 may think lightly of such devotion to science, it by no means diminishes its value. Moreover, the Arab of the neighbourhood of Niffer is not the gentlest of men; on the contrary, when he is displeased with the “Frangi” excavator, he will break his water-jars, or slit his water-skins as they are passing on donkeys to the river, or try to burn down his tents, or even to kill him, as he has done to more than one excavator.
