Study on Chinese High School Students Career Planning and Career Choice Influencing Factors - Career Anchor Perspective

The career anchor theory is one of the important theories in modern human resource management. Carrying out career anchor assessments effectively and conducting career education for high school students based on the career anchor theory is not only beneficial for the career positioning and choices of high school students,but also helpful in the effective implementation of career education work. In recent years, the issue of high school students' employment has become a focus of social concern, making it increasingly difficult to find a suitable career truly. Therefore, in guiding on student employment, more emphasis should be placed on educating high school students on career values. Helping high school students find the right career, positioning their career anchors well, and establishing a scientific career outlook is key. The career anchor theory proposed by the renowned American career guidance expert Edgar H. Schein provides theoretical guidance for the career positioning and choices of high school students. Therefore, this study uses Schein's career anchor theory as the research perspective and main theoretical support, selecting high school students as the research subjects, and applying the career anchor theory to the study of high school students' career values through empirical analysis. This paper adopts a research model combining "point" and "surface". The basic analysis of the contemporary high school student’s career outlook belongs to the "surface" category of universal discussion. Based on this, a survey was conducted on the career values of high school students in Chongqing through questionnaire surveys, and the career anchors of high school students were tested, which belongs to the "point" category of particular analysis. The study indicates that high school student’s career choices overall exhibit ambiguity in career direction and oscillation, highlighting the urgent need for guidance on career anchors focusing on career positioning. Therefore, this paper proposes to identify career anchors among high school students, determine career anchor types using career anchor assessment methods, utilize the career anchor theory to establish an adaptable career outlook, and hopes that the career anchor theory can play a positive role in the career education of high school students and help them establish a scientific career outlook.

Associations between Dietary Intake and Cardiovascular Disease Risk in American Career Firefighters: An Observational Study.

Firefighters have demanding jobs, requiring high levels of fitness in stressful situations for operational readiness, yet many firefighters are at an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). Diet is an important factor contributing to the development of CVD. The purpose of this study was to describe the dietary intake of firefighters and examine the associations between dietary intake and the CVD risk. Forty-six male career firefighters (age = 41.2 ± 11.2 years; BMI = 29.2 ± 4.1 kg/m2; body fat = 21.7 ± 6.1%) enrolled in a fitness-focused wellness program completed a health survey and a fitness assessment. The survey responses and fitness assessment were used to calculate the Framingham CVD Risk Score. Data were analyzed using R, the residual assumptions were verified, and the alpha level was set at 0.05. The results revealed that firefighters consume a standard American diet, with the overconsumption of meat and underconsumption of fruits and vegetables. The average CVD risk approached the upper limit of low risk. The results also indicate that meat servings and preparation fat affect the CVD risk (R2 = 0.21, p = 0.006). The outcomes of this study can inform investigations aimed at improving operational readiness and reducing the CVD risk in firefighters by implementing a holistic approach combining dietary interventions with physical training.

The research aim is to determine forms of the reception of Ivan Turgenev’s oeuvre in Vladimir Nabokov’s first novel in English, The Real Life of Sebastian Knight. Until now, Turgenev’s supertext in the novel has not been the object of a separate study, although researchers note the world-forming function of allusions to Russian and European classics. The study emphasizes the fact that the reception of Turgenev’s work is present on the levels of plot and imagery: (1) Turgenev’s plot about the character being obsessed with a femme fatale; (2) the mystical images of Turgenev and the principles of constructing an otherworldly space; (3) the biographical myth about Turgenev, represented in the works of writers contemporary with Nabokov. In the first stage of the analysis, we focus on a comparison of Nina Lecerf with Turgenev’s femme fatales. Nabokov implements the features of the portrait of Turgenev’s heroines – Maria Polozova, Clara Militch, Irina Ratmirova, Ellis, but in each case the similarity is incomplete. Unlike Turgenev’s femme fatales, who subjugate the will of characters with their supernatural beauty and power, Nina Lecerf charms the characters with physical attractiveness that is difficult to put into words by V. and Sebastian. The article proves that being in love with Nina Lecerf is a challenge to the characters imagination and literary gift. In the second part, we identify the features of Turgenev’s biographical myth in the novel: Nabokov focuses on the historical-literary works of B. Zaytsev, A. Remizov, Yu. Aikhenvald, etc. The unclear aspects of Sebastian’s and Turgenev’s biographies are similar (hypochondria; attachment to a woman, interpreted as the cause of death); however, if in B. Zaytsevs fictionalized biography they are given a mystical-religious or psychological explanation, then in Nabokov’s novel the “mysteries” of Sebastian’s biography are not revealed, but activate the narrators imagination and inspire the creation of his own fictional world. Nabokov uses the myth of Turgenev the dreamer, formed in A. Remizovs works. Unlike Turgenev’s works, in Nabokov’s novel, the dream images cannot be directly deciphered: they form a monogram connecting fantasy, the narrator’s direct impressions, and memories. We conclude that the author’s affinity to Turgenev’s works and to the traditions of their interpretation is a poetological issue at the beginning of Nabokov’s American career. Nabokov highly assesses the “night theme” as a bright example of Turgenev’s style. Landscape images of “Bezhin Lea” are used by the narrator to create and describe fictional worlds. In The Real Life of Sebastian Knight, allusions to Turgenev’s works introduce the theme of otherworldliness as an alternative artistic world with which the characters feel their genetic connection.

he article is devoted to the analysis of The Assistant Producer, Vladimir Nabokov’s first short story in English. The study explores how V. Nabokov interprets the problem of the author’s identity in foreign readers’ audience. The structural-semiotic and intertextual methods are used in the paper to identify the narrative techniques organizing the intrigue in the short story: the exposure of the character as a triple agent and the narrator as an artist. The narrator focuses on the optical and sound effects of cinema as well as on the foreign accent in other characters’ speech. These peculiarities of the narrator’s perception show his perceptive and language sensitiveness inherent in an artist. The pseudo-documental cinema world includes the legends of Stepan Razin, portraits by impressionists and post-impressionists, and emigre literature. The artistic world is constructed through the images conveying the aberrations of perception, smells and the senses of touch, which are difficult to verbalize, unmotivated alliterations, allusions that are hard to interpret for foreign readers. Perceptive images and literary allusions construct the plot about the communicative mistake: from the narrator’s point of view, the cinema shows the world of Russian emigre inaccurately, but it reveals the banality of the intentions of the character-executioner. V. Nabokov assesses incompleteness as a key characteristic of intercultural communication, motivated by the differences in recipients’ sensorial and reading experience. V. Nabokov’s strategy is to highlight the inexpressible characteristics of his sensorial and creative (reading and writing) experience. Communicative mistakes inspire co-creative reading. At the beginning of his American career, V. Nabokov develops the idea that a genius writer can convey his sensorial, aesthetic, and language experience despite the communicative borders.

A Multimodal Corpus-Based Study of american career weblogs

The article describes the application of multimodal corpus-based methodologies to the study of the popular American career blogs. The research is carried out within the framework of the theory of multimodal discourse analysis. Quantitative and qualitative methods have been applied in order to identify and explain different aspects of verbal and graphic modes convergence. Two corpora have been compiled by the authors for the purposes of the research. Both corpora contain multimodal annotations to browse and search for relevant textual and visual materials. The corpus software used in this research is UAM CorpusTool and UAM ImageTool, they include frequency and keywords search, statistical processing of visual images annotations and their combinations with keywords. A collection of texts along with the images (photos, graphics and illustrations) has been analyzed to investigate how verbal and non-verbal modes work together to convey the holistic meaning of the message. The results suggest that verbal and graphic modes are non-competing but mutually supportive and complementary. The analysis has proved that the specified modes have different meaning potential: words can add focus, identification, precision, and perspective to a pictorial representation while images add emotional, expressive and connotative value to the text.

A Case Study of a Low-Income African American Career Academy’s Approach to Student Services

The provision of support services has been found critical for meeting the needs of students and their families, but related research in predominantly low-income, African American/Black communities, is limited. Thus, through a case study we explored how a school, located in a low-income area with a predominantly African American/Black population, adopted and enacted support services. The setting was an urban high school with an enrollment of 700 students who are predominantly African American (98%) and 100% low-income. We conducted interviews with district, school, and community stakeholders; and we followed a thematic approach for the analysis. A major finding was that the adoption of support services built on the shared belief that the school should serve as a central place of support for students and the community. We identified two distinct strands of support services, one represented by in-school supports for students and the other designed to help families in the community. Further, we found an underlying philosophy of removing obstacles for students as a means to help them succeed in school. Regarding implications for practice, it is important to note the difficulty in replicating the efficacy of support services without culturally relevant leadership at the district and school level.

ABSTRACT After Lolita brought him international fame, Vladimir Nabokov kept producing new novels while translating earlier Russian works into English. Since his death, other translations, fiction, lectures, correspondence, writings on lepidoptera, and even a dream diary have appeared. The latest book, Think, Write, Speak: Uncollected Essays, Reviews, Interviews, and Letters to the Editor, offers a dazzling introduction to his work while tracing his progress from an essay on “Cambridge,” written as a Russian émigré student in 1921, to an interview with the BBC Books Programme in 1977. Scholars of American literature will be intrigued by evidence of his transformation from Russian author V. Sirin to American writer and university professor Vladimir Nabokov—including his first interview (in Russian) after arriving in New York City in 1940, his early book reviews (in English) for American journals, fascinating glimpses of his academic career at Wellesley and Cornell, and dozens of charmingly playful interviews from Lolita’s publication until his death. More than eight decades since Nabokov immigrated to the United States, there is still much to learn about his American literary career.

Beyond STEM: The invisible career expectations of Asian American high school students.

The overrepresentation of Asian Americans in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) occupations can render invisible the early experiences of Asian Americans in other fields. In this study, we provide a national and longitudinal portrait of the occupational expectations of Asian Americans (n = 2,340) in high school and their postsecondary years. Multinomial logistic regression models confirm Asian Americans hold high occupational expectations in STEM fields overall. However, longitudinal results also reveal high occupational expectations in arts and sports in Grade 9 that decrease and occupational expectations in business and management that begin low but increase after high school. These longitudinal trends are similar for other students but reveal career trajectories of Asian Americans that receive less attention among researchers. Results show little evidence of misalignment between Asian American occupational expectations and academic subject interests in high school. Gaps in occupational expectations between students categorized as English Learner (EL) and those who are not (non-EL) are also mostly attenuated when accounting for individual and parent backgrounds. The study has implications for supporting Asian American youth interested in non-STEM fields, complicating a characterization of Asian Americans as model minorities uniformly predisposed for STEM fields, and improving Asian American career visibility beyond STEM. The Delcourt House: the last house by Richard Neutra

The only French building by the architect Richard Neutra (1892-1970), Delcourt house, built in Croix near Roubaix, France, is frequently forgotten in publications on his work, and is generally considered to be of little significance in the largely American career of its designer. At the end of the 1960s, Marcel Delcourt (1923-2016), a young Chief Executive Officer at the head of the mail order company Les Trois Suisses, was attracted to the American way of life. As the final work of Richard Neutra, the Delcourt residence is a fragile heritage, the result of complex and fruitful exchanges between Europe and the United States of America (USA), between architects and the client, but also between the customized design of most of the features and the use of sophisticated techniques, products that the interior finish industry was able to supply at the end of the 1960s. The edifice now stands as a repository of domestic architecture techniques.

“I Am Already Annexed”: Ramon Reyes Lala and the Crafting of “Philippine” Advocacy for American Empire

AbstractThis article reconstructs the American career of the Manila-born author Ramon Reyes Lala. Lala became a naturalized United States citizen shortly before the War of 1898 garnered public interest in the history and geography of the Philippines. He capitalized on this interest by fashioning himself into an Oxford-educated nationalist exiled in the United States for his anti-Spanish activism, all the while hiding a South Asian background. Lala's spirited defense of American annexation and war earned him the political patronage of the Republican Party. Yet though Lala offered himself as a ‘model’ Philippine-American citizen, his patrons offered Lala as evidence of U.S. benevolence and Philippine civilization potential shorn of citizenship. His embodied contradictions, then, extended to his position as a producer of colonial knowledge, a racialized commodity, and a representative Filipino in the United States when many in the archipelago would not recognize him as such. Lala's advocacy for American Empire, I contend, reflected an understanding of nationality born of diasporic merchant communities, while his precarious success in the middle-class economy of print and public speaking depended on his deft maneuvering between modalities of power hardening in terms of race. His career speaks more broadly to the entwined and contradictory processes of commerce, race formation, and colonial knowledge production.

African American Veterans Career Transition Using the Transition Goals, Plans, Success (GPS) Program as a Model for Success

Increased deployments to combat operation areas have resulted in veterans transitioning from the military in more significant numbers. Likewise, African American veterans are also leaving the military in higher numbers. Transition assistance training is necessary to prepare these veterans for higher education and civilian employment since these are the most likely destinations for the successful transition of this population of veterans. Transition Goals, Plans, Success Program (Transition GPS) prepares military personnel for the transition back to civilian life. Transition GPS focuses on helping military personnel to become career-ready through mandatory curriculum-based training in a classroom setting before departing the military for civilian life. This study aims to understand better the transition experiences of African American veterans, their participation in the Transition GPS program, and the challenges they face obtaining employment and higher education after military service. Moreover, higher education is vital for the self-improvement and economic stability of African American veterans. The participants for this study were six African American veterans who served in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, and Army National Guard. Each participant served in their respective branch of the military for 20 years or more. Veterans in this study highlighted the challenges they faced during their transition from the military to civilian life and acknowledged the importance of higher education. The themes that emerged are representative of the participants’ life experiences, military transition experiences, and demonstrates higher education’s role in a successful transition. The participants expressed the importance of family during their transitions, but they need help to better understand civilian careers and employment before leaving the military. Furthermore, African American veterans need career counseling to help them understand their transition experiences and help to prepare an adequate resume that translates their military skills into a civilian job match.

Blackfaced at The Blacks: Audience Participation in Jean Genet’s Lessons on Race

This article considers the audience participation in Jean Genet’s controversial play The Blacks (1959) as it was staged in the New York premiere in 1961 and revival in 2003. The Blacks casts its audience in a painful, confusing, even humiliating role, a role that was aggravated by the 2003 revival’s production strategies, yet the play has been remarkably successful throughout its history. I consider the aspirations and limitations of audience participation as a form of political engagement, as well as Genet’s suspicion, articulated in his recently published “Preface to The Blacks,” that theatre cannot contribute to the liberation of oppressed groups. The American career of The Blacks clarifies some of the reasons we fail to end racism, including the potential pleasures of participating in our own racially inspired humiliation.

Letters from England:A Contribution to the Intellectual Biography of Alexander Altmann Ira Robinson (bio) introduction Jewish studies in the English language has been immeasurably enriched by the forced emigration from Nazi Germany of scholars like Alexander Altmann (1906–87)1 and Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907–72)2 to England and the United States. Scholars who have engaged with Altmann's biography have thus far largely concentrated their attention on his career in Germany, cut short by his 1938 emigration to Manchester, England, and, to a lesser extent, on his American career at Brandeis University, starting in 1959. The period he spent as "Communal Rabbi of Manchester and District" from 1938 to 1959 has not yet received its scholarly due, though clearly it is in these decades that Altmann became one of the most influential Jewish studies scholars in the world. In the course of research in the Abraham Joshua Heschel Papers at Duke University, I found a file containing eight letters Altmann sent Heschel from England dated from 1940 to 1952.3 Copies of the letters [End Page 321] Heschel sent Altmann are not extant in the Heschel papers.4 The excerpts of the letters selected for this brief essay witness Altmann's English sojourn from two perspectives. The first is the human side: we see Altmann as he confronted German air raids on Manchester, supported the British home front, and faced the agony of knowing that his family was in mortal danger in German-occupied Holland. We also see his growing scholarly engagements with the British academic community, his tensions with the British rabbinical establishment, his efforts to create Jewish educational initiatives that would culminate in the Institute of Jewish Studies, and his relationships with Israeli scholars and the Hebrew University. The letters underline both Altmann's determination to grow as a scholar and his strong conviction that his intellectual endeavors, along with those of his fellow German Jewish refugees, were of great significance. the letters: altmann to heschel5 2nd Dec[ember], 1940 My dear friend, It is a long time that I have not written to you. I feel that your thoughts must often wander across the Atlantic to your many friends especially in this country which is now so heroically fighting not only her own but even your battle. Alas, many of those who were so anxious to work in the spiritual field and who were your closest collaborators in the "Institute for Jewish Learning" are now [End Page 322] interned.6 All their work has consequently come to a standstill. My own scheme which I had initiated with great enthusiasm had also to be abandoned, at least "for the duration." My experience was very disappointing and, as I wrote to you, I believe, caused me even trouble and unpleasantness. The orthodox section of the London Rabbinate was very much annoyed about my activities. They felt that "spiritual revitalization" and "Science of Judaism" were dangerous issues, particularly in conjunction with people who are themselves non-orthodox. En el presente trabajo ofrecemos un acercamiento a su debut en la Metropolitan Opera House de Nueva York, acaecido en el año 1916. A Recording Artist: Enrico Caruso and His Scrapbooks

Enrico Caruso (1873–1921) has often been understood as extraordinarily talented and yet ultimately insubstantial, a singer whose celebrity eclipsed his artistry. “It matters not what Caruso sings or how he sings it,” wrote one critic. “The public adores him anyhow.” Discussions of the tenor emphasize the suitability of his voice for mechanical recording, suggesting that his ability to capitalize on emerging technology provides the best explanation for his long American career. But Caruso’s reception in the United States was shaped not only by contemporary technologies but also by American attitudes towards Italian immigrants in the early twentieth century. At once “highbrow” and “lowbrow,” he both fulfilled and frustrated American ideas about the relationship between nationality and artistry. Caruso was aware of such attitudes and highly sensitive to them. His intense concern about the reception of both his work and his self may be traced through his personal scrap-books, nine of which survive among his private papers. The scrapbooks reveal that it did matter what and how Caruso sang. Critical and popular responses dictated his repertoire throughout his American career, prompting the tenor to devise strategies for introducing new roles and criteria for judging his success. More fundamentally, the scrapbooks demonstrate Caruso’s ongoing negotiation with his own identity, determined to establish himself not simply as a voice but as an artist.

”The Miss Austen of Sweden”. Fredrika Bremer in the 1840s America and Historiographical Revaluation How did Fredrika Bremer’s (1801–1865) depictions of Scandinavian family life become so immensely popular in the United States in the 1840s, and what did this transatlantic success have to do with gender, translation, media history, and nation building? In an attempt to trace the prerequisites for the intense yet rather short lived American ”Bremer-mania”, this article focuses on the period 1842 to 1844 – a task greatly facilitated by the last decades’ substantialdigitizing of book collections and historical press material. The investigation shows that Bremer’s breakthrough occurred in a very specific situation in American social-, cultural-, and media history, and that her novels filled certain needs in the ongoing postcolonial struggle to foil British cultural hegemony. In this process, Bremer’s depictions of young women fighting for freedom offered a transfer identity, a position that for obvious reasons was provisional and temporary. As publishers started to invest in local writers, the boom for Scandinavian fiction soon decreased, and has left few traces in the history of the 19th century American novel. Fredrika Bremer’s American career is yet another example of how translated literature and international dissemination is inadequately reflected in national literary historiography. However, considering the last decades’ growing focus on transcultural dissemination, it is eligible that future research pays more attention to the diversity of literary flows and circulations.
