On the Road to Participative Management: the American Academic Library, 1934—1970

Le concept de gestion participative est apparu au debut des annees trente dans une usine de l'Illinois. En 1970, ce nouveau style de management etait adopte par un grand nombre d'organismes (en dehors des bibliotheques). Pour etudier les origines de la participation dans les bibliotheques universitaires deux epoques doivent etre distinguees: la premiere debute dans les annees trente et se refere au New Deal du President Roosevelt. De 1934 a 1970 quelques bibliothecaires ont ecrit pour demontrer a leurs collegues les benefices de la participation. Ce travail des pionniers est analyse, ainsi que les obstacles eleves par la bureaucratie des Universites. La deuxieme periode a commence a la fin des annees soixante, accompagnee des troubles que l'on sait dans les universites. (INTD)

ENDOWMENT FUNDING IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES: Pitfalls and Potential

Fiscal support from endowments is a longstanding tradition in many institutions of higher education. The first known endowment in an American academic library resulted from a bequest of £500 from Thomas Hollis to the Harvard College Library in 1774. The number of endowments grew steadily in the 1800s, and by the turn of the century there were significant endowments in many libraries, including Yale, Columbia, the University of Pennsylvania, Brown, the University of Virginia, and the University of North Carolina. Some institutions came to be heavily dependent on trusts for library funding. Between 1928 and 1956, for example, endowment supplied the total budgetary allocation for acquisitions at the Dartmouth College Library. Similarly, as late as the early 1950s, all of the book funds for the Harvard College Library came from its endowment.

The Rise of Book Selection Theory in American Academic Libraries

Bibliographic instruction in government publications: Lecture programs and their evaluation in American academic depository libraries

Library class lectures are seen as one means of instructing students about government publications. Based upon a survey of academic depository libraries, this article relates the opinions of ninety-seven librarians concerning the role such lectures play in their outreach programs. The survey also documents the interest of librarians in evaluation and shows the types of evaluation commonly employed to gauge lecture effectiveness.
