Metalens for Accelerated Optoelectronic Edge Detection under Ambient Illumination.

Analog systems may allow image processing, such as edge detection, with low computational power. However, most demonstrated analog systems, based on either conventional 4-f imaging systems or nanophotonic structures, rely on coherent laser sources for illumination, which significantly restricts their use in routine imaging tasks with ambient, incoherent illumination. Here, we demonstrated a metalens-assisted imaging system that can allow optoelectronic edge detection under ambient illumination conditions. The metalens was designed to generate polarization-dependent optical transfer functions (OTFs), resulting in a synthetic OTF with an isotropic high-pass frequency response after digital subtraction. We integrated the polarization-multiplexed metalens with a polarization camera and experimentally demonstrated single-shot edge detection of indoor and outdoor scenes, including a flying airplane, under ambient sunlight illumination. The proposed system showcased the potential of using polarization multiplexing for the construction of complex optical convolution kernels toward accelerated machine vision tasks such as object detection and classification under ambient illumination.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of newly designed photochromic Senofilcon-A lens(PCL) on optical aberrations of the eye (total (TA) and high-order-aberrations (HOA)) under ambient illumination conditions.
 Methods: In this retrospective study, 40 eyes of 20 volunteers were fitted with a non-photochromic Senofilcon-A contact lens on the right eye, a PCL on left eye. Subjects were evaluated in terms of best-corrected visual-acuity. Aberrometric measurements were obtained at baseline(lens-free), with activated and deactivated PCL in 3 mm, 6 mm and maximum pupil size. 
 Results: In lens-free situation there was no difference in terms of TA and HOAs(for 3mm, 6mm and max-pupil-size, TA; P= .456; P= .687; P= .899 and HOA; P = .226; P = .259; P = .442 respectively).In all pupil diameters, in the PCL group compared to the standard lens group, there was a slight increase in total aberrations independent of lens activation, which was not statistically significant(for 3mm,6mm and max-pupil-size, activated lens situation;P = .523; P = .622; P = .244 and deactivated lens situation; P = .785; P = .357; P = .201,respectively). Contrary to total aberrations, higher order aberrations were non-significantly slightly decreased in the PCL group(for 3mm,6mm and max-pupil-size, activated lens situation; P = .235; P = .661; P = .841 and deactivated lens situation;P = .245; P = .071; P = .231,respectively).
 Conclusion: The PCL produces similar TA and HOAs with the non-photochromic soft contact lens in both activated and deactivated situation. PCLs can be preferred for those who need uninterrupted vision in variable light conditions.

Monocular metasurface camera for passive single-shot 4D imaging

It is a grand challenge for an imaging system to simultaneously obtain multi-dimensional light field information, such as depth and polarization, of a scene for the accurate perception of the physical world. However, such a task would conventionally require bulky optical components, time-domain multiplexing, and active laser illumination. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a compact monocular camera equipped with a single-layer metalens that can capture a 4D image, including 2D all-in-focus intensity, depth, and polarization of a target scene in a single shot under ambient illumination conditions. The metalens is optimized to have a conjugate pair of polarization-decoupled rotating single-helix point-spread functions that are strongly dependent on the depth of the target object. Combined with a straightforward, physically interpretable image retrieval algorithm, the camera can simultaneously perform high-accuracy depth sensing and high-fidelity polarization imaging over an extended depth of field for both static and dynamic scenes in both indoor and outdoor environments. Such a compact multi-dimensional imaging system could enable new applications in diverse areas ranging from machine vision to microscopy.

Adaptive Display White Point for Enhancing Viewing Experience of Mixed Reality Headsets

The development of various new imaging systems introduces new viewing conditions that did not exist in the past. Mixed reality systems, which capture the real environment and renders the captured image on display with virtual objects superimposed, require more immersive and realistic feeling than virtual and augmented reality systems, especially when users just put on the headsets. Therefore, the rendering shown on the display needs to be carefully adjusted to match the appearance in the real environment. In this study, we specifically focus on reproducing the overall color tone of the real environment under different ambient illumination color by shifting the white point of the display. The human observers viewed a real environment under different ambient illumination conditions, in terms of CCT and chromaticities, and evaluated the rendering of the captured scene with 44 white points. The results clearly suggested that the display white point should be adaptive to the ambient illumination color, especially when the ambient illumination had a CCT below 4000 K, to provide a good user experience.

Optimum display luminance under a wide range of ambient light for cockpit displays.

The self-luminous cockpit displays need to be adaptive to a wide range of ambient light levels, which changes from very low illuminance to very high levels. Yet, current studies on evaluation and luminance setting of displays in bright surroundings are still limited. In this study, a three-dimensional visual ergonomic experiment was carried out to investigate how bright a cockpit display should be to meet aircrew operational requirements under different illuminance. A lab study with a within-subjects (N = 12) design was conducted in a simulated cockpit. According to the Weber-Fechner's Law, human observers evaluated five display luminance conditions (101, 101.5, 102, 102.5, 103 cd/m2) under five ambient illuminance conditions (10°, 101, 102, 103, 104 lx). Visual performance, visual fatigue and visual comfort were used as evaluation bases, which were measured by d2 task, subjective fatigue questionnaire and visual perception semantic scales. Nonlinear function fitting was used to calculate the optimal luminance under a certain illuminance. Finally, curvilinear regression was used to analyze the illuminance and its corresponding optimal luminance. Based on Silverstein luminance power function, a luminance adjustment model with the form of power function was obtained. The proposed three-dimensional model fits the experimental data well and is consistent with the existing studies. It can be regarded as a supplement and optimization of the previous model under high ambient illuminance. This study can contribute not only to the pleasing luminance setting of panel displays in aircraft cockpits but also to other self-luminous devices, such as tablet devices, outdoor monitoring equipment and advertising screens.

Graph-Based Thermal–Inertial SLAM With Probabilistic Neural Networks

Simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) system typically employs vision-based sensors to observe the surrounding environment. However, the performance of such systems highly depends on the ambient illumination conditions. In scenarios with adverse visibility or in the presence of airborne particulates (e.g., smoke, dust, etc.), alternative modalities such as those based on thermal imaging and inertial sensors are more promising. In this article, we propose the first complete thermal–inertial SLAM system that combines neural abstraction in the SLAM front end with robust pose-graph optimization in the SLAM back end. We model the sensor abstraction in the front end by employing probabilistic deep learning parameterized by mixture density networks (MDNs). Our key strategies to successfully model this encoding from thermal imagery are the usage of normalized 14-b radiometric data, the incorporation of hallucinated visual (RGB) features, and the inclusion of feature selection to estimate the MDN parameters. To enable a full SLAM system, we also design an efficient global image descriptor that is able to detect loop closures from thermal embedding vectors. We performed extensive experiments and analysis using three datasets, namely self-collected ground robot and hand-held data taken in indoor environment, and one public dataset (SubT-tunnel) collected in underground tunnel. Finally, we demonstrate that an accurate thermal–inertial SLAM system can be realized in conditions of both benign and adverse visibility.

Computational framework for steady-state NLOS localization under changing ambient illumination conditions.

Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) imaging of hidden objects is a challenging yet vital task, facilitating important applications such as rescue operations, medical imaging, and autonomous driving. In this paper, we attempt to develop a computational steady-state NLOS localization framework that works accurately and robustly under various illumination conditions. For this purpose, we build a physical NLOS image acquisition hardware system and a corresponding virtual setup to obtain real-captured and simulated steady-state NLOS images under different ambient illuminations. Then, we utilize the captured NLOS images to train/fine-tune a multi-task convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture to perform simultaneous background illumination correction and NLOS object localization. Evaluation results on both stimulated and real-captured NLOS images demonstrate that the proposed method can effectively suppress severe disturbance caused by the variation of ambient light, significantly improving the accuracy and stability of steady-state NLOS localization using consumer-grade RGB cameras. The proposed method potentially paves the way to develop practical steady-state NLOS imaging solutions for around-the-clock and all-weather operations.

Machine‐Learned Light‐Field Camera that Reads Facial Expression from High‐Contrast and Illumination Invariant 3D Facial Images

Facial expression conveys nonverbal communication information to help humans better perceive physical or psychophysical situations. Accurate 3D imaging provides stable topographic changes for reading facial expression. In particular, light‐field cameras (LFCs) have high potential for constructing depth maps, thanks to a simple configuration of microlens arrays and an objective lens. Herein, machine‐learned NIR‐based LFCs (NIR‐LFCs) for facial expression reading by extracting Euclidean distances of 3D facial landmarks in pairwise fashion are reported. The NIR‐LFC contains microlens arrays with asymmetric Fabry−Perot filter and NIR bandpass filter on CMOS image sensor, fully packaged with two vertical‐cavity surface‐emitting lasers. The NIR‐LFC not only increases the image contrast by 2.1 times compared with conventional LFCs, but also reduces the reconstruction errors by up to 54%, regardless of ambient illumination conditions. A multilayer perceptron (MLP) classifies input vectors, consisting of 78 pairwise distances on the facial depth map of happiness, anger, sadness, and disgust, and also exhibits exceptional average accuracy of 0.85 (p<0.05). This LFC provides a new platform for quantitatively labeling facial expression and emotion in point‐of‐care biomedical, social perception, or human−machine interaction applications.

Visual Perception in External Lighting Conditions

LED street lighting is a topical trend in modern outdoor lighting. High light output of LEDs creates all conditions for modernization of electric lighting networks in Ukraine. Human vision is a complex process associated with retinal light perception. Vision is divided into: day vision, night vision, and twilight vision. The function of the eye is highly dependent on the distribution of brightness in the field of vision. The spectral sensitivity of photoreceptors varies for different wavelengths of the visible spectrum and different levels of light intensity. The rationing of the lighting installation is based on detailed studies of the observer’s visual performance depending on different lighting conditions. One of the main luminous parameters that can easily be measured objectively is illumination. Brightness as a function of illumination, the observer’s position and the spectral coefficient of the working surface reflection is more informative, but has some difficulty in measuring. There is a clear need to develop a system that would make it possible to uniquely assess the visual efficiency of a given spectral composition under certain observation conditions. It was decided to introduce the term equivalent brightness as the parameter of such a system. The difficulty of using the function Vek(λ,Lek) to calculate the equivalent brightness is the function’s dependence Vek(λ,Lek) on Lek. The aim of the study is to approximate the function of the relative spectral luminous efficiency in mesopathic regions by a set of standard CIE functions that do not depend on the value of equivalent luminosity. The calculation method Vek(λ,Lek) is proposed using only two normalized functions of the relative spectral radiation efficiency for day V(λ) and night V'(λ) vision. The use of such approximation function makes it possible to determine the equivalent brightness, which adequately reflects the level of visual perception under the conditions of ambient illumination, based on the photometric brightness of the light source. To calculate Vek(λ,Lek) we use the ICE recommended functions of relative spectral light efficiency for the twilight vision, which are based on the spectral composition of the blackbody radiation with a color temperature of 2042 K. The use of the developed methodology provides results that more accurately characterize the efficiency of light sources in outdoor lighting installations compared to the results of calculations obtained when using standard methods.

Multi-Spectral Clinical Prototype for Fluorophore Detection

Identification of tumour margins during resection of the brain is critical for improving the post-operative outcomes. Current methods of tumour identification use 5-ALA, an exogenous precursor, metabolized to fluorescent PpIX in tumour tissue. Although visible under fluorescent microscope, PpIX is easily photo-bleached and tumour tagging is subjective, resulting in tumour under-resection and accelerated recurrence. To address this issue, photo-bleaching resistant and quantitative method is required. This study describes the characterization of a pulsed, multi-wavelengths system designed to measure diffuse reflectance and auto-fluorescence under strong ambient illumination conditions. The performance was tested on n = 400 liquid tissue phantoms containing a wide concentration range of absorber, scatterer and two fluorophores as well as on ex-vivo samples of gray and white matter. The background subtraction technique was shown to be efficient for a range of ambient illumination intensities. A linear relationship was observed between system response and predicted fluorophore concentrations as well as 97.8% accuracy of tissue classification by 5-fold cross-correlation, linear SVM.

P–188 Ambient light intensity and wavelength in the IVF laboratory does not affect life birth rates

Abstract Study question Do different wavelengths and intensities in ambient lighting affect clinical outcomes? Summary answer Variations on ambient lighting intensity and wavelength do not affect life birth rates. What is known already Light is one of the factors to consider when designing an IVF laboratory. Most IVF clinics work under reduced illumination, trying to mimic uterine conditions as much as possible. Nevertheless, it has been described that 95% of the light that affects an embryo comes from the microscope, not ambient lighting. It is well accepted that exposure to extreme lighting conditions affects embryos through photo-oxidation and the creation of reactive oxygen species. Still, there is no study that documents the effect of different wavelengths on human embryos. Study design, size, duration Prospective study performed between january 2019 and february 2020. Every 60 days we changed ambient illumination conditions using the LED lighting installed throughout the IVF laboratory. Six different groups were created: Cyan (470nm), Green (550nm), Yellow (600nm), Orange (625nm), intense white (WH), and low intensity white (WL) as control group. Participants/materials, setting, methods A total of 572 egg donation cicles with 355 fresh single embryo transfers were included in the study. In all cycles ICSI and Time-lapse culture was performed (Embryoscope, Vitrolife). PGT and testicular biopsy/aspiration treatments were excluded. Eggs and embryos were exposed to ambient illumination during pick-up, denudation, ICSI, and embryo transfer procedures. Main results and the role of chance Light exposure during embryo/gamete manipulation is inevitable. Hence, we analyzed parameters linked to the success of an IVF cycle to assess the effect of different lighting conditions concluding that neither light color nor intensity affect IVF success rates. No differences were found between groups regarding maternal age, age of the recipient, diagnostic, or number of eggs received (p > 0.05). Fertilization rates were similar between groups (C = 77.04%; G = 73.72%; Y = 75.64%; O = 78.1%; WL = 76.4%; WH = 75.2%; p = 0.216) as well as good quality blastocyst rates (C = 57.35%; G = 57.37%; Y = 62.30%; O = 59.75%; WL = 63.28%; WH = 60.55%; p = 0.234). Regarding clinical outcomes both implantation and miscarriage rates were found to be equal between groups (C = 61.67%; G = 52.89%; Y = 55.10%; O = 66.18%; WL = 66.00%; WH = 53.55%; p = 0.194, and C = 24.32%; G = 19.15%; Y = 11.11%; O = 24.44%; WL = 15.15%; WH = 8.11%; p = 0.301). The main outcome for this study was live birth rates and no differences were found (C = 51.85%; G = 50.00%; Y = 52.17%; O = 53.97%; WL = 57.14%; WH = 50.75%; p = 0.168). Limitations, reasons for caution We must take into account that embryos were cultured inside a time-lapse incubator, diminishing the effect of ambient light. Wider implications of the findings: This study demonstrates that, with advances in culture technology, neither light intensity nor light wavelength affecting gametes/embryos during manipulation influence clinical outcomes. Visual Performance under Varying Illumination Conditions while using an Indigenously Developed Wrist Wearable Computer

Ambient illumination conditions have significant impact on users’ visual performance while carrying out onscreen reading tasks on visual display units, especially smaller screen sizes. Present study assessed the visual performance responses of different ambient illumination levels during onscreen reading on Wrist Wearable Computer (WWC) developed for the command-control-communication between the control room and the soldiers operating in remote locations. Ten (10) Indian Infantry soldiers performed two different types of loud reading tasks on the display of WWC under three different ambient illumination (mean ±SEM) conditions namely, Indoor controlled (450.00±10.00 lx), Outdoor daylight (11818.7±582.91 lx) and Indoor dark (0.12±0.03 lx) environments. While reading, participants wore an eye tracking glass which recorded the eye movement responses. Visualisation techniques were used to predict the association of illumination levelof surrounding with visual performance of the user. Subjective legibility rating was also applied to understand participants’ preferences towards physical attributes of the onscreen information and illumination level. Results indicated that illumination had a significant effect on eye movement parameters like fixation frequency, fixation duration and scanpath length while completing the tasks. Overall, participants performed better under indoor controlled illumination conditions in terms of fixation profile and scanpath length, apart from improved subjective legibility ratings as compared to other two illumination conditions. Future research attempts need to be directed towards the optimum performance of the display across wide range of ambient illumination conditions and to establish how the display of indigenously developed wearable computer performs in comparison to other such displays available across the globe.

Perovskitoid‐Templated Formation of a 1D@3D Perovskite Structure toward Highly Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

AbstractLongevity is a long‐standing concern for organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Recently, the use of low dimensional perovskite has been proven to be a promising strategy to improve the stability of PSCs. Herein, it is demonstrated that 1D perovskitoid based on 2‐diethylaminoethylchloride cations can act as a template to induce 1D@3D perovskite structure, leading to smoother surface texture, longer charge‐carrier lifetime, smaller residual tensile strain, and reduced surface‐defect density in the perovskite film. With this strategy, highly efficient and stable 1D@3D PSC with excellent reproducibility, showing a champion power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 22.9% under standard AM 1.5 G one sun illumination is realized. The unencapsulated optimized devices can retain 94.7%, 92.4%, and 90.0% of their initial PCEs for 2100, 2200, and 2200 h under ambient air, 85 °C and illumination conditions, respectively.

Visual recognition efficiency of handheld infrared thermometer interface information under low ambient illuminance

One of the symptoms of plagues, epidemics or pandemics is often a fever, so during such unprecedented times, handheld infrared thermometers are vital devices for monitoring symptomatic individuals. It is therefore very important to enhance reading efficiency when these thermometers are used for lengthy periods of time in a low illuminance environment. The need for the efficient reading of infrared thermometers or a fast reaction time when reading the information is even more relevant now during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this study, a target search experiment of digital characters is carried out through a simulated interface and use scenarios of a handheld thermometer based on three variables: the inclination angle or slant of the seven segment display characters, screen brightness, and ambient illuminance. The experimental results show that the inclination angle or slant of the characters and ambient illuminance have a significant effect on the reaction speed. In general, the slowest reaction time is found when reading characters with a slant of 10° to the left and the reaction time is the fastest with a right slant of 20°. A continued reduction in ambient illuminance does not affect the visual recognition performance but instead further enhances reading efficiency. Increasing the screen brightness increases the reaction time more in relatively low ambient illuminance conditions as opposed to relatively high ambient illuminance, which implies that in higher ambient illuminance conditions, a brighter screen needs to be used to obtain the same reaction speed as that in lower ambient illuminance conditions.

Robust 3D Reconstruction of Dynamic Scenes From Single-Photon Lidar Using Beta-Divergences.

In this article, we present a new algorithm for fast, online 3D reconstruction of dynamic scenes using times of arrival of photons recorded by single-photon detector arrays. One of the main challenges in 3D imaging using single-photon lidar in practical applications is the presence of strong ambient illumination which corrupts the data and can jeopardize the detection of peaks/surface in the signals. This background noise not only complicates the observation model classically used for 3D reconstruction but also the estimation procedure which requires iterative methods. In this work, we consider a new similarity measure for robust depth estimation, which allows us to use a simple observation model and a non-iterative estimation procedure while being robust to mis-specification of the background illumination model. This choice leads to a computationally attractive depth estimation procedure without significant degradation of the reconstruction performance. This new depth estimation procedure is coupled with a spatio-temporal model to capture the natural correlation between neighboring pixels and successive frames for dynamic scene analysis. The resulting online inference process is scalable and well suited for parallel implementation. The benefits of the proposed method are demonstrated through a series of experiments conducted with simulated and real single-photon lidar videos, allowing the analysis of dynamic scenes at 325 m observed under extreme ambient illumination conditions.

Context and content based scalable video adaptation for ubiquitous multimedia communication services

A novel scalable video adaptation framework is developed to achieve the aim of ensuring enhanced Rate-Distortion (R-D) performances for the ubiquitous multimedia communication services in this study. This novel framework also integrates novel contributions in its development process. As the first contribution, novel models evaluating the motion information and spatial structure characteristics of the video contents are proposed. As the second novel contribution of the developed framework, adaptation experiments are conducted by exploiting a proposed adaptation approach relying on prioritizing the spatial, temporal, and quality layer based Network Abstraction Layer Units (NALUs) of the scalability extension of the H.264/Advanced Video Coding (AVC) gradually in accordance with the video contents’ motion and structural characteristics. The proposed adaptation approach also relies on the prioritization of the quality layer based NALUs from the key and non-key frames in both symmetric and asymmetric manners while attaining the target bit rate of a communication network. In accordance with these development steps, subjective experiments are carried to assess the quality of adapted video contents having different motion information and spatial structure characteristics under different ambient illumination conditions. Using the analysis results of the subjective experiments, another significant novelty of the framework relying on developing novel prioritization schemes, which assist an encoder to assign priority indices for each NALU of the encoded video contents based on their characteristics and the ambient illumination condition of the viewing environment, is performed. The adaptation experiments conducted in the light of the developed framework prove that highly efficient R-D performances can be attained for the video contents having any characteristic and viewed under any ambient illumination condition for assisting the multimedia communication services to ensure improved user viewing perception while easing the adverse effects of the network congestion.

Impact of the ambient light illuminance conditions on the shade matching capabilities of an intraoral scanner.

To compare the shade matching capabilities between an intraoral scanner (IOS) and a spectrophotometer under different ambient light illuminance conditions. The shade of three teeth of a patient was obtained using an IOS (IOS group) (TRIOS 3; 3Shape) and a spectrophotometer (DS group) (EasyShade V; Vita Zahnfabrik) at 4 ambient illuminances: 10000-, 1000-, 500-, and 0-lx. Ten shade measurements were documented using Vita Classical and 3D-Master guides per tooth at each lighting condition. Data was analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann Whitney U tests (α=.05). Significant shade discrepancies were obtained between the groups in different lighting conditions (P< .05). The IOS group presented significant shade discrepancies in different lighting conditions when evaluated using either shade guide, with lower variation under the 0-lx condition. However, the DS group did not present significant shade discrepancies among the different lighting conditions with either shade guide, except for the maxillary lateral incisor measured under 10 000-lx condition using the 3D-Master guide. Lighting conditions influenced the shade matching competency of an IOS. The IOS tested obtained high variation in the different lighting conditions evaluated and provided a lower shade value than the spectrophotometer. The spectrophotometer revealed high consistency amongst the various lighting conditions evaluated. Ambient light illuminance conditions can impact the shade matching capabilities of IOSs. The results of this investigation suggest the use of a supplementary instrumental method for assessment of tooth shade.

Underwater Use of a Hyperspectral Camera to Estimate Optically Active Substances in the Water Column of Freshwater Lakes

Freshwater lakes provide many important ecosystem functions and services to support biodiversity and human well-being. Proximal and remote sensing methods represent an efficient approach to derive water quality indicators such as optically active substances (OAS). Measurements of above-ground remote and in situ proximal sensors, however, are limited to observations of the uppermost water layer. We tested a hyperspectral imaging system, customized for underwater applications, with the aim to assess concentrations of chlorophyll a (CHLa) and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) in the water columns of four freshwater lakes with different trophic conditions in Central Germany. We established a measurement protocol that allowed consistent reflectance retrievals at multiple depths within the water column independent of ambient illumination conditions. Imaging information from the camera proved beneficial for an optimized extraction of spectral information since low signal areas in the sensor’s field of view, e.g., due to non-uniform illumination, and other interfering elements, could be removed from the measured reflectance signal for each layer. Predictive hyperspectral models, based on the 470 nm–850 nm reflectance signal, yielded estimates of both water quality parameters (R² = 0.94, RMSE = 8.9 µg L−1 for CHLa; R² = 0.75, RMSE = 0.22 m−1 for CDOM) that were more accurate than commonly applied waveband indices (R² = 0.83, RMSE = 13.2 µg L−1 for CHLa; R² = 0.66, RMSE = 0.25 m−1 for CDOM). Underwater hyperspectral imaging could thus facilitate future water monitoring efforts through the acquisition of consistent spectral reflectance measurements or derived water quality parameters along the water column, which has the potential to improve the link between above-surface proximal and remote sensing observations and in situ point-based water probe measurements for ground truthing or to resolve the vertical distribution of OAS.

Comparison of Above-Water Seabird and TriOS Radiometers along an Atlantic Meridional Transect

The Fiducial Reference Measurements for Satellite Ocean Color (FRM4SOC) project has carried out a range of activities to evaluate and improve the state-of-the-art in ocean color radiometry. This paper described the results from a ship-based intercomparison conducted on the Atlantic Meridional Transect 27 from 23rd September to 5th November 2017. Two different radiometric systems, TriOS-Radiation Measurement Sensor with Enhanced Spectral resolution (RAMSES) and Seabird-Hyperspectral Surface Acquisition System (HyperSAS), were compared and operated side-by-side over a wide range of Atlantic provinces and environmental conditions. Both systems were calibrated for traceability to SI (Système international) units at the same optical laboratory under uniform conditions before and after the field campaign. The in situ results and their accompanying uncertainties were evaluated using the same data handling protocols. The field data revealed variability in the responsivity between TRiOS and Seabird sensors, which is dependent on the ambient environmental and illumination conditions. The straylight effects for individual sensors were mostly within ±3%. A near infra-red (NIR) similarity correction changed the water-leaving reflectance (ρw) and water-leaving radiance (Lw) spectra significantly, bringing also a convergence in outliers. For improving the estimates of in situ uncertainty, it is recommended that additional characterization of radiometers and environmental ancillary measurements are undertaken. In general, the comparison of radiometric systems showed agreement within the evaluated uncertainty limits. Consistency of in situ results with the available Sentinel-3A Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) data in the range from (400…560) nm was also satisfactory (−8% &lt; Mean Percentage Difference (MPD) &lt; 15%) and showed good agreement in terms of the shape of the spectra and absolute values.
