Background: The number of patients with dementia is growing rapidly as the population ages. Dietary factors are important from the view point of public health since they are potentially modifiable and maintaining optimal nutritional status has been expected to be a desirable approach for prevention of dementia. Another nutritional topic on dementia and diet is the association of type-2 diabetes (T2D) and hyerinsulinemia with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Neuropathological survey in the Hisayama study, has shown that hyperinsulinemia and hyperglycemia caused by insulin resistance accelerate the formation of neuritic plaques suggesting that T2D is a major risk factor for AD.
