AbstractThe title compounds are synthesized from stoichiometric mixtures of the elements (alumina crucibles, 600 °C, 10 d) and characterized by single crystal XRD and TB‐LMTO‐ASA band structure calculations.

Zn and Fe Recovery from Electric Arc Furnace Dusts

Steel production generates dust containing Zn and Fe that can be recovered under certain conditions. The main objectives of the study were to evaluate the recovery of these elements when added in briquette form to liquid pig iron at a temperature of 1500°C and to chemically and morphologically characterize the Electric Arc Furnace Dust (EAFD). In the dust characterization stage, the following techniques were used: granulometric and chemical analyses, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). After characterization, the dust was agglomerated in order to form a briquette, then, placed in liquid pig iron. To perform the tests, a vertical laboratory-scale furnace was used that maintained an inert gas flow (argon) within the furnace during the experiments. All melting tests were performed in this device. Alumina crucibles were used. The zinc was reduced, volatilized and collected by a flue placed on top of the furnace. It was possible to achieve FeO reduction values higher than 98%. The new dust collected during the tests contained iron and 68% of zinc on the average. [doi:10.2320/matertrans.M2013385]

The Leachate of Lead from the Crucibles Undergone Ruby Heat Treatment with Lead Glass Additive

Heat treatment with lead glass additive is developed to improve the quality of rubies. The alumina crucibles which were used as containers are not subjected to the hazardous waste laws. Therefore, this research constituted a study to characterize and determines lead contents in the leachate from these crucibles by two methods, the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) and synthetic precipitation leaching procedure (SPLP) as simulation of leaching conditions of landfill and acid rain, respectively. Discarded crucibles from 6 factories gives lead concentrations ranging from 0.58 to 335.73 (TCLP) and 0.35 to 312.17mg /l (SPLP), with a positive correlation between them. For the pH values, the leachates by TCLP seem to be constant at 5.00-5.17 while those by SPLP seem to be fluctuated, ranging from 6.64 to 9.73. The increasing in pH value doses not correspond with the increasing in lead concentration level.

Magnetic behaviors of Cu3TeO6 with multiple spin lattices

Spin-web compound Cu3TeO6 exhibits many remarkable geometrical-frustration lattices including spin equilateral-triangle, spin isosceles-triangle, and spin planar-hexagon. Large single crystals of Cu3TeO6 are successfully grown at slow cooling rate using flux method in an alumina crucible. The grown crystals show unique growth behaviors and morphology. The quality of the crystals is confirmed using X-ray powder diffraction technique. Magnetic behaviors of the grown crystals are investigated by means of magnetic and heat capacity measurements, showing a long-range antiferromagnetic ordering at ~60K. Base on experimental results, the spin arrangements for each spin–lattice in Cu3TeO6 are also suggested.

Use of Rice Straw Ash in Enhancing the Properties of Soda-Lime-Silica Glass-Ceramics

A study on the crystallization behavior of a soda-lime-silica glass composition incorporating rice straw ash was carried out. Melting was carried out at 1500°C in an alumina crucible for 5 hours. The glass produced was examined by differential scanning calorimetry to determine the glass transition and crystallization temperatures for use as heat-treatment temperatures to transform the glass into glass-ceramics. A similar composition made up using industrial chemicals was also melted for comparative purposes. Both glasses were heat-treated at 750°C and 920°C for 3 different soaking durations. Both glasses exhibited crystallization from the outer surface which increased in thickness as the soaking time was increased. Scanning electron microscopy was used to study the thickness and identity of the crystalline phases formed. Density and hardness measurements showed that the rice straw glass ceramics exhibited higher values than the glass-ceramics using industrial chemicals. The morphologies of the fracture surfaces of both glass-ceramic compositions were also evaluated by scanning electron microscopy.

Influence of the oxidation on microstructure and magnetocaloric effect of LaFe11.5Si1.5C0.2 compounds

The oxidation of La-rich phase prevented the formation of the 1:13 phase in LaFe11.5Si1.5C0.2 compounds and α-Fe phase would grow large in the high-temperature annealing process. Moreover, the obtained 1:13 phase decomposed into a eutectic structure of α-Fe and La-rich oxide because of further oxidation. Owing to the oxidation, the Curie temperature of the remaining 1:13 phase increased. The maximum magnetic entropy change of the sample annealed for 3d in an alumina crucible reached 17.8Jkg−1K−1 under a magnetic field change of 0–3T, which is close to that of the sample annealed for 3d in a quartz tube filled with argon (18.4Jkg−1K−1). In addition, magnetic hysteresis decreased for the sample which was annealed for 3d in an alumina crucible. This implies short-term annealing process under a very low vacuum is practical for the preparation of some La(Fe, Si)13-based compounds.

Effect of BN-Added Precursors on Phase Formation and Transport Properties of (Bi,Pb)-2223 HTS

(Bi,Pb)-2223 HTSs (high temperature superconductors) were synthesized from nominally pure (reference) and BN-added Bi1.7Pb0.3Ca2Sr2Cu3O y (BN) x precursors (x=0,0.10,0.15, and 0.20) by the solid state reaction method using alumina crucibles. The influence of boron nitride addition on the phase formation kinetics and transport properties of (Bi,Pb)-2223 HTSs was studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), resistivity and critical current density measurements. BN-added compounds reveal a significant enhancement in both the high-T c 2223 phase formation and critical current density compared to the reference specimen.
