Full-color, time-valve controllable and Janus-type long-persistent luminescence from all-inorganic halide perovskites

Long persistent luminescence (LPL) has gained considerable attention for the applications in decoration, emergency signage, information encryption and biomedicine. However, recently developed LPL materials – encompassing inorganics, organics and inorganic-organic hybrids – often display monochromatic afterglow with limited functionality. Furthermore, triplet exciton-based phosphors are prone to thermal quenching, significantly restricting their high emission efficiency. Here, we show a straightforward wet-chemistry approach for fabricating multimode LPL materials by introducing both anion (Br−) and cation (Sn2+) doping into hexagonal CsCdCl3 all-inorganic perovskites. This process involves establishing new trapping centers from [CdCl6-nBrn]4− and/or [Sn2-nCdnCl9]5− linker units, disrupting the local symmetry in the host framework. These halide perovskites demonstrate afterglow duration time ( > 2,000 s), nearly full-color coverage, high photoluminescence quantum yield ( ~ 84.47%), and the anti-thermal quenching temperature up to 377 K. Particularly, CsCdCl3:x%Br display temperature-dependent LPL and time-valve controllable time-dependent luminescence, while CsCdCl3:x%Sn exhibit forward and reverse excitation-dependent Janus-type luminescence. Combining both experimental and computational studies, this finding not only introduces a local-symmetry breaking strategy for simultaneously enhancing afterglow lifetime and efficiency, but also provides new insights into the multimode LPL materials with dynamic tunability for applications in luminescence, photonics, high-security anti-counterfeiting and information storage.

Theoretical study on photoelectric properties of ferroelectric photovoltaic perovskite CsGeBr3 based on first-principle calculations

Ferroelectric photovoltaic materials have attracted great attention because of their unique photoelectric conversion mechanism, high photo-generated voltage, and adjustable polarization intensity. Traditional ferroelectric oxide perovskites such as BaTiO3, BiFeO3, and Pb(ZrTi)O3 have attracted much attention but they are not suitable as light absorbing layers in solar cells, due to the large optical bandgap, low light absorption rate, and small photogenerated current. Therefore, it is necessary to seek prominent materials with both ferroelectric and suitable band gaps. Recently, the evidence of ferroelectricity in the typical three-dimensional all-inorganic halide perovskites CsGeX3, with band gaps of 1.6 eV to 2.3 eV has been confirmed. However, the spontaneous polarization of ferroelectric perovskite CsGeX3 is ∼10 to 20 μc cm−2 which is weaker than that of ABO3 (∼26 to 75 μc cm−2). Strain engineering has a significant influence on the properties of semiconductor materials by controlling the lattice scaling and the internal atomic spacing. Hence, in this work, strain engineering is introduced to adjust the ferroelectric polarization and the photoelectric properties of ferroelectric perovskite CsGeBr3. The calculated results show that when the applied compressive strain increases from 0% to −4%, the spontaneous polarization of ferroelectric perovskite CsGeBr3 increases from 14.23 μc cm−2 to 51.61 μc cm−2, and the band gap reduces from 2.3631 eV to 1.5310 eV. The effective mass of electrons and holes gradually reduces, exciton binding energies decrease from 48 meV to 5 meV, and the optical absorption coefficient is strongly enhanced from 3 × 105 cm−1 to 5 × 105 cm−1 in the visible range. Besides, the power conversion efficiency(PCE) of CsGeBr3 is significantly increased from 16.95% to 26.77%. Therefore, the results indicate that the application of compressive strain can increase the ferroelectric polarization and enhance the original photovoltaic performance of ferroelectric perovskite CsGeBr3. Our theoretical calculations can provide useful insights and beneficial guidance into experimental studies of ferroelectric perovskites in photoelectric applications.

All-Inorganic Halide Perovskites Boost High-Ranged Figure-of-Merit in Bi0.4Sb1.6Te3 for Thermoelectric Cooling and Low-Grade Heat Recovery.

The all-inorganic halide perovskite CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, or I) offers various advantages, such as tunable electronic structure and high carrier mobility. However, its potential application in thermoelectric materials remains underexplored. In this study, we propose a simple yet effective method to synthesize a CsPbX3/Bi0.4Sb1.6Te3 (BST) nanocomposite by sintering a uniformly mixed raw powder. The intrinsic excitation of the BST system is suppressed by exploiting the rich phase structure and tunable electrical transport properties of CsPbX3, and the thermoelectric properties were synergistically optimized. Notably, for CsPbI3, its phase-transition-induced dislocation arrays together with low group velocities drastically reduce thermal conductivity. As a result, the composite achieves an ultrahigh average figure-of-merit (ZT) of 1.4 from 298 to 523 K. The two-pair TE module demonstrates a superior conversion efficiency of 7.3%. This study expands the potential applications of inorganic halide perovskites, into thermoelectrics.

Hot-Injection Synthesis of Cesium Lead Halide Perovskite Nanowires with Tunable Optical Properties.

Metal halide perovskite semiconductors have emerged as promising materials for various optoelectronic applications due to their unique crystal structure and outstanding properties. Among different forms, perovskite nanowires (NWs) offer distinct advantages, including a high aspect ratio, superior crystallinity, excellent light absorption, and carrier transport properties, as well as unique anisotropic luminescence properties. Understanding the formation mechanism and structure-property relationship of perovskite NWs is crucial for exploring their potential in optoelectronic devices. In this study, we successfully synthesized all-inorganic halide perovskite NWs with high aspect ratios and an orthorhombic crystal phase using the hot-injection method with controlled reaction conditions and surface ligands. These NWs exhibit excellent optical and electrical properties. Moreover, precise control over the halogen composition through a simple anion exchange process enables the tuning of the bandgap, leading to fluorescence emission, covering a wide range of colors across the visible spectrum. Consequently, these perovskite NWs hold great potential for efficient energy conversion and catalytic applications in photoelectrocatalysis.

Over 12% efficient CsSnI3 perovskite solar cells enabled by surface post-treatment with bi-functional polar molecules

Eco-friendly all-inorganic tin halide perovskite compounds have drawn significant attention for photovoltaic applications. Nevertheless, the non-radiative recombination derived from the uncoordinated Sn2+ cations at surface and the electron extraction barrier between different functional layers significantly impair the performance of perovskite device. Here we for the first time show that thiophene derivative, 3-thiophenemethylammonium iodide, as an interface modifier between the CsSnI3 perovskite surface and electron transport layer, can passivate defects and reduce the electron extraction potential barrier. The molecules of 3-thiophenemethylammonium iodide can autonomously inter-connect with uncoordinated Sn2+via lone electron pairs of the donated π electrons in electronic-rich thiophene molecule. Moreover, such interface modifier lowers the electron extraction potential barrier at the perovskite/electron transport layer junction in which an interface dipole electric field form. Consequently, the optimized planar solar cell with a structure of ITO/PEDOT:PSS/CsSnI3/ICBA/BCP/Ag, exhibited a power conversion efficiency of 12.05 % under AM 1.5G illumination condition. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest efficiency for fully inorganic CsSnI3-based devices reported so far. This study represents an innovative approach to realize high-efficiency all-inorganic CsSnI3 perovskite solar cells.

Exceptional Stability against Water, UV Light, and Heat for CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF Composites.

All-inorganic lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) have been widely applied in optoelectronic devices owing to their excellent photoluminescence (PL) properties. However, poor stability upon exposure to water, UV light or heat strongly limits their practical application. Herein, CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites with exceptional stability against water, UV light, and heat are synthesized by ultrasonic processing the precursors of lead-based MOF (Pb-MOF), oleylammonium bromide (OAmBr) and cesium oleate (Cs-OA) solutions at room temperature. Pb-MOF can not only provide the lead source for the in situ growth of CsPbBr3 NCs, but also the protective layer of perovskites NCs. The formed CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites show a considerable PL quantum yield (PLQY) of 67.8%, and can maintain 90% of the initial PL intensity when immersed in water for 2 months. In addition, the outstanding PL stability against UV light and heat is demonstrated with CsPbBr3 NCs synthesized by the conventional method as a comparison. Finally, a green (light-emitting diode) LED is fabricated using green-emitting CsPbBr3@Pb-MOF composites and exhibits excellent stability without packaging when immersed in water for 30 days. This study provides a practical approach to improve the stability in aqueous phase, which may pave the way for future applications for various optoelectronic devices.

Stereochemically Active Lone Pair Leads to Birefringence in the Vacancy Ordered Cs3Sb2Cl9 Perovskite Single Crystals.

Stereochemically active lone pair (SCALP) cations are attractive units for realizing optical anisotropy. Antimony(III) chloride perovskites with the SCALP have remained largely unknown to date. We synthesized a new vacancy ordered Cs3Sb2Cl9 perovskite single crystals with SbCl6 octahedral linkage containing the SCALP. Remarkably, all-inorganic halide perovskite Cs3Sb2Cl9 single crystals exhibit an exceptional birefringence of 0.12 ± 0.01 at 550 nm. The SCALP brings a large local structural distortion of the SbCl6 octahedra promoting birefringence optical responses in Cs3Sb2Cl9 single crystals. Theoretical calculations reveal that the considerable hybridization of Sb 5s and 5p with Cl 3p states largely contribute to the SCALP. Furthermore, the change in the Sb-Cl-Sb bond angle creates distortion in the SbCl6 octahedral arrangement in the apical and equatorial directions within the crystal structure incorporating the required anisotropy for the birefringence. This work explores pristine inorganic halide perovskite single crystals as a potential birefringent material with prospects in integrated optical devices.

Remarkable emission enhancement of CsPbBr3 quantum dots based on an Ag nanoparticle-Ag film plasmonic coupling structure.

All-inorganic halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have recently received much attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties. And their emission properties still need to be improved for further applications. Here, we demonstrated a remarkable emission enhancement of the CsPbBr3 QDs based on an Ag nanoparticle-Ag film plasmonic coupling structure. Through precise control of the gap distance between Ag nanoparticle and Ag film, the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) peak was tuned to match the emission wavelength of the CsPbBr3 QDs. We achieved a 30-fold fluorescence intensity enhancement and a lower lasing threshold, which is 25% of that of the CsPbBr3 QDs without plasmonic coupling structure. It is attributed to that the plasmonic coupling structure exhibits an extremely strong local electric field owing to the coupling between LSPR of Ag nanoparticle and surface plasmon polariton of Ag film. This work provides an effective way to enhance the optical emission of perovskite QDs and promotes the further exploration of on-chip light source.

APTES and CTAB Synergistic Induce a Heterozygous CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 Perovskite Composite and its Application on the Sensitive Fluorescent Detection of Iodide ions.

Recently, all-inorganic halide perovskite quantum dots (IPQD) as a new fluorescent material with excellent fluorescence properties have attracted wide attention. However, their instability in polar solvents is the main factor hindering their application in analysis. Herein, a heterozygous perovskite (CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6) was simultaneously prepared and stabilized by a silylanization strategy using (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (APTES) and cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) assisted precipitation encapsulation method. The synthesized CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 emitted an independent fluorescence at 520nm. The obtained CsPbBr3/Cs4PbBr6 exhibited good stability in ethanol/water mixtures. It was used as a fluorescent probe for sensitively detecting iodide ions (I-) by fluorescence quenching mechanism in the concentration range of 1 ~ 70.0 µM with the detection limit (LOD) of 0.83 µM (relative standard deviation (RSD) = 1.33%, n = 20). The simplicity and high selectivity of the proposed fluorescent analysis method were the prominent features. This work could be extended to the other target ion detection by a perovskite fluorescent quenching.

Mixing I and Br in Inorganic Perovskites: Atomistic Insights from Reactive Molecular Dynamics Simulations.

All-inorganic halide perovskites have received a great deal of attention as attractive alternatives to overcome the stability issues of hybrid halide perovskites that are commonly associated with organic cations. To find a compromise between the optoelectronic properties of CsPbI3 and CsPbBr3, perovskites with CsPb(BrxI1-x)3 mixed compositions are commonly used. An additional benefit is that without sacrificing the optoelectronic properties for applications such as solar cells or light-emitting diodes, small amounts of Br in CsPbI3 can prevent the inorganic perovskite from degrading to a photo-inactive non-perovskite yellow phase. Despite indications that strain in the perovskite lattice plays a role in the stabilization of the material, a full understanding of such strain is lacking. Here, we develop a reactive force field (ReaxFF) for perovskites starting from our previous work for CsPbI3, and we extend this force field to CsPbBr3 and mixed CsPb(BrxI1-x)3 compounds. This force field is used in large-scale molecular dynamics simulations to study perovskite phase transitions and the internal ion dynamics associated with the phase transitions. We find that an increase of the Br content lowers the temperature at which the perovskite reaches a cubic structure. Specifically, by substituting Br for I, the smaller ionic radius of Br induces a strain in the lattice that changes the internal dynamics of the octahedra. Importantly, this effect propagates through the perovskite lattice ranging up to distances of 2 nm, explaining why small concentrations of Br in CsPb(BrxI1-x)3 (x ≤ 1/4) have a significant impact on the phase stability of mixed halide perovskites.

Enhanced room-temperature magnetic field effect on spin-polarized excitons of cesium lead bromine-magnetite nanocomposites

The generation and manipulation of spin-polarized electrons are the basis of spintronic applications. Spin injection from a ferromagnetic surface or heterojunction to a semiconductor adjacent layer is often used to create spin-polarized carriers; however, for halide perovskites, due to the mismatch of lattice parameters with most ferromagnets at room temperature, this spin injection is challenging. In this study, we synthesize all-inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 surrounded by Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles. It is found that this nanocomposite shows both magnetization and magnetic field-induced circularly polarized photoluminescence at room temperature. Specifically, with the attachment of Fe3O4 nanoparticles closely on the surface of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, both the degree of circular polarization and g-factor enhanced by 3.5 times compared with that of pure CsPbBr3. The phenomenon should be due to the formation of exciton magnetic polaron through the coupling of the magnetic aligned nanoparticles with the excitonic state of the host semiconductor in the external magnetic field. The effective spin injection provides a method of controlling the excitonic spin polarization of all-inorganic halide perovskites for spintronic applications.

An all-inorganic lead-free metal halide double perovskite for the highly selective detection of norfloxacin in aqueous solution.

Lead-based perovskites are highly susceptible to environmental influences, and their application in analytical chemistry, especially in aqueous solution, has been reported rarely. All-inorganic lead-free metal halide perovskites have been considered as a substitute for lead-based perovskites. Herein, a Cs2RbTbCl6 perovskite microcrystal (PMCs), which emits strong yellow-green fluorescence with a maximum emission wavelength at 547nm, was for the first time synthesized and characterized. The Cs2RbTbCl6 PMCs could be well dispersed in N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMF), and its fluorescence could be significantly enhanced by the addition of norfloxacin (NOR) in the aqueous solution. We found that the Cs2RbTbCl6 PMCs can be used as fluorescent probes (excitation, 365nm; emission, 547nm) to selectively detect NOR in a concentration range from 10.0 to 200.0μM with the limit of detection (LOD) being 0.04μM. The Cs2RbTbCl6 PMCs could also be adsorbed on filter paper to fabricate as a fluorescent test paper for visual detection of NOR under 365-nm ultraviolet (UV) lamp irradiation. The proposed method has the potential to establish a new analytical method to visualize the detection of NOR in aqueous environments and also promotes the application of all-inorganic lead-free perovskites for analytical detection in aqueous environments.

PbS/CsPbBr3 Heterojunction for Broadband Neuromorphic Vision Sensing.

Neuromorphic light sensors with analogue-domain image processing capability hold promise for overcoming the energy efficiency limitations and latency of von Neumann architecture-based vision chips. Recently, metal halide perovskites, with strong light-matter interaction, long carrier diffusion length, and exceptional photoelectric conversion efficiencies, exhibit reconfigurable photoresponsivity due to their intrinsic ion migration effect, which is expected to advance the development of visual sensors. However, suffering from a large bandgap, it is challenging to achieve highly tunable responsivity simultaneously with a wide-spectrum response in perovskites, which will significantly enhance the image recognition accuracy through the machine learning algorithm. Herein, we demonstrate a broadband neuromorphic visual sensor from visible (Vis) to near-infrared (NIR) by coupling all-inorganic metal halide perovskites (CsPbBr3) with narrow-bandgap lead sulfide (PbS). The PbS/CsPbBr3 heterostructure is composed of high-quality single crystals of PbS and CsPbBr3. Interestingly, the ion migration of CsPbBr3 with the implementation of an electric field induces the energy band dynamic bending at the interface of the PbS/CsPbBr3 heterojunction, leading to reversible, multilevel, and linearly tunable photoresponsivity. Furthermore, the reconfigurable and broadband photoresponse in the PbS/CsPbBr3 heterojunction allows convolutional neuronal network processing for pattern recognition and edge enhancements from the Vis to the NIR waveband, suggesting the great potential of the PbS/CsPbBr3 heterostructure in artificial intelligent vision sensing.

Self-Powered Photodetectors on the Lateral CsPbBr3/CsPbI3 Perovskite Heterostructure Nanoplates

Self-powered photodetectors have attracted the extensive attention in the past years. Herein, we synthesized the lateral CsPbBr3/CsPbI3 perovskite heterosrtucture nanoplates using anti-solvent solution method and fabricated the self-powered photodetectors by transfer the Au-Au electrodes onto the surface of single CsPbBr3/CsPbI3 nanoplate. Under zero bias, this photodetector showed a reversible switching behavior under turn on/off illumination light with responsivity up to 0.887 mA W−1 and external quantum efficiency of 0.247%, benefiting from the intrinsic built-in electrical potential in the heterosrtuctures. These results enable a significant progress of all-inorganic halide perovskites toward the low-power consumption optoelectronics nanodevices.

Lanthanide Doping into All-Inorganic Heterometallic Halide Layered Double Perovskite Nanocrystals for Multimodal Visible and Near-Infrared Emission.

The introduction of lanthanide ions (Ln3+) into all-inorganic lead-free halide perovskites has captured significant attention in optoelectronic applications. However, doping Ln3+ ions into heterometallic halide layered double perovskite (LDP) nanocrystals (NCs) and their associated doping mechanisms remain unexplored. Herein, we report the first colloidal synthesis of Ln3+ (Yb3+, Er3+)-doped LDP NCs utilizing a modified hot-injection method. The resulting NCs exhibit efficient near-infrared (NIR) photoluminescence in both NIR-I and NIR-II regions, achieved through energy transfer down-conversion mechanisms. Density functional theory calculations reveal that Ln3+ dopants preferentially occupy the Sb3+ cation positions, resulting in a disruption of local site symmetry of the LDP lattices. By leveraging sensitizations of intermediate energy levels, we delved into a series of Ln3+-doped Cs4M(II)Sb2Cl12 (M(II): Cd2+ or Mn2+) LDP NCs via co-doping strategies. Remarkably, we observe a brightening effect of the predark states of Er3+ dopant in the Er3+-doped Cs4M(II)Sb2Cl12 LDP NCs owing to the Mn component acting as an intermediate energy bridge. This study not only advances our understanding of energy transfer mechanisms in doped NCs but also propels all-inorganic LDP NCs for a wider range of optoelectronic applications.

"Whole-Body" Fluorination for Highly Efficient and Ultra-Stable All-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Quantum Dots.

Inherent "soft" ionic lattice nature of halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs), triggered by the weak Pb-X (X=Cl, Br, I) bond, is recognized as the primary culprit for their serious instability. A promising way is to construct exceedingly strong ionic interaction inside the QDs and increase their crystal cohesive energy by substituting the interior X- with highly electronegative F- , however, which is challenging and hitherto remains unreported. Here, a "whole-body" fluorination strategy is proposed for strengthening the interior bonding architecture of QDs, wherein the F- are uniformly distributed throughout the whole nanocrystal encompassing both the interior lattice and surface, successfully stabilizing their "soft" crystal lattice and passivating surface defects. This approach effectively mitigates their intrinsic instability issues including light-induced phase segregation. As a result, light-emitting devices based on these QDs exhibit exceptional efficiency and remarkable stability.

A 3D simulation model to study all-inorganic CsPbX3 (X = Br and I) perovskites-based light-emitting diodes with different hole-transporting layers

The development of numerical models is essential for optimizing perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) and explaining their physical mechanism for further efficiency improvement. This study reports, for the first time, on a detailed device modelling of an all-inorganic perovskite LED consisting of CsPbX3 (X = Br and I) as light emitting layer (LEL) with different hole transporting layers (HTLs), employing COMSOL Multiphysics simulation package. Therefore, a 3D simulation model is served to investigate the appropriate HTLs that meet the design requirements of a PeLED in terms of band off-set engineering. For this purpose, a series of all-inorganic halide perovskites with different HTLs such as PEDOT: PSS, CuSCN and MoO3 are simulated under the same theoretical settings, and the performances of LEDs are compared with each other. This is done through studying their electronic properties using current density–voltage (J-V) curves and internal quantum efficiency (IQE) measurements. The results obtained from the J-V curves reveal that all the CsPbBr3-based samples with different HTLs exhibit the same turn-on voltage (V on) of approximately 4.2 V, while this value increases to 5.8 V for the CsPbI3-based samples. Compared with the PeLEDs based on CsPbI3, the PeLEDs based on CsPbBr3 indicate lower V on due to the formation of shorter charge carrier injection barriers at their interfaces. Furthermore, among the various simulated structures, the highest IQE is obtained for perovskite CsPbI3-based LED with MoO3 HTL (5.21%). The effect of different parameters on the performance of the proposed configurations are also investigated, and it turns out that the thickness of LELs and lifetime of charge carriers have a decisive role to play in the efficiency of PeLEDs. This theoretical study not only successfully explains the working principle of PeLEDs but also clearly shows researchers how to produce high-performance LEDs in the laboratory by knowing the physical properties of materials and accurately adjusting energy band alignments.

Substrate temperature dependence of vapor phase deposition of all-inorganic lead-free CsSnBr3 perovskite thin films

We report the effect of substrate temperature on the vapor phase deposition of all-inorganic lead-free tin halide perovskite CsSnBr3 thin films by co-evaporation of CsBr and SnBr2. The amount of SnBr2 supplied had little effect on the thin film when the substrate temperature exceeded the SnBr2 effusion cell temperature (∼180 °C) indicating that the three-temperature growth was realized. The polycrystalline CsSnBr3 thin films obtained by three-temperature growth showed micrometer-scale grains and no by-products. The average grain size increased for higher substrate temperatures following the Arrhenius law with an activation energy of 6.6 kJ mol−1.

All-inorganic lead halide perovskites for photocatalysis: a review.

Nowadays, environmental pollution and the energy crisis are two significant concerns in the world, and photocatalysis is seen as a key solution to these issues. All-inorganic lead halide perovskites have been extensively utilized in photocatalysis and have become one of the most promising materials in recent years. The superior performance of all-inorganic lead halide perovskites distinguish them from other photocatalysts. Since pure lead halide perovskites typically have shortcomings, such as low stability, poor active sites, and ineffective carrier extraction, that restrict their use in photocatalytic reactions, it is crucial to enhance their photocatalytic activity and stability. Huge progress has been made to deal with these critical issues to enhance the effects of all-inorganic lead halide perovskites as efficient photocatalysts in a wide range of applications. In this manuscript, the synthesis methods of all-inorganic lead halide perovskites are discussed, and promising strategies are proposed for superior photocatalytic performance. Moreover, the research progress of photocatalysis applications are summarized; finally, the issues of all-inorganic lead halide perovskite photocatalytic materials at the current state and future research directions are also analyzed and discussed. We hope that this manuscript will provide novel insights to researchers to further promote the research on photocatalysis based on all-inorganic lead halide perovskites.
