The ternary hydrides, Ca 2IrH 5, Sr 2IrH 5, Ca 2RhH 5, Sr 2RhH 5, Ca 2RuH 6, and Sr 2RuH 6 have been prepared. In each case the alkaline earth hydride was reacted with a Group VIII metal at high temperatures under a hydrogen atmosphere. X-Ray powder data showed that the two metal atoms are arranged in the fluorite structure. Powder neutron diffraction showed that the hydrogens octahedrally coordinate the Group VIII metal atom. Random vacancies of hydrogen sites were indicated for the iridium compound. The elemental analyses and magnetic susceptibility data support the structural assignments.
