Experimental Studies on Self-Compacting Alkali Activated Slag Concrete Mixes Incorporating Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement as Fine Aggregate

Here performance evaluation of Self Compacting Alkali Activated Slag Concrete incorporating Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement as fine aggregate was carried out. Investigation on mechanical properties by replacing the fine aggregate by Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement in different proportions were also evaluated. Development of Self Compacting Alkali Activated Concrete mixes (SCAAC) was made with GGBFS and Lime are used binders, with binder content varying between 550 to 650 kg/m3 of fresh concrete and lime content varying from 10% to 20% of binder content. The net W/B ratio of the mixes was kept around 0.57. The fine aggregate was replaced by Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement with percentage replacement from 50 to 100% of Crushed Stone Sand. The alkaline solutions had Na2O dosage percentages in the range 5-6% with a constant activator modulus maintained at 1. By using Minitab Statistical Software nine mixes were produced with 4 factors and 3 levels. In this study the TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) optimization technique was carried out to know the effectiveness. Results showed the slump flow greater than 650 mm, with their L–Box, U-box and V-Funnel values ranging between 0.85,20mm and10s respectively, results showed enhanced mechanical properties as compared to control OPCC mix.

Effect of elevated temperature on rice husk ash based self-compacting alkali activated slag concrete mixes under different cooling regimes

Here an attempt has been made to develop self-compacting alkali activated slag concrete mix using Rice Husk Ash as Binder. Investigation on the mechanical properties and residual strength when subjected to temperature of 200,400,600,800°C retention period1hour. The Rice husk ash Self Compacting Alkali Activated Slag Concrete mixes was made with GGBS, Rice husk ash and Lime as the binder, with its content varying from 550 to 650 kg/m3of fresh concrete. The W/B ratio of mixes varied in 0.7-0.88 range. The alkaline solutions had Na2O percentages in the range 5-7 with constant activator modulus maintained at 1. Final mix considered had lower water content, higher percentage of RHA and higher compressive strength. Trails showed Processed Rice Husk Ash30%, lime20% and GGBS50% for binder content 600kg/m3 and 6% Na2O dosage showed greater compressive strength and lower water binder ratio compared to other trail mixes. Results showed the slump flow, L–Box, U-box and V-Funnel as greater than 650mm, 0.85, 20mm and 10s resp. Fire damage of RSAASC was measured by subjecting to elevated temperature between 200-800°C for a retention period of 1hour. Cooled to room using furnace cooling, air cooling and sudden cooling. Results indicated reduced compressive strength with increased temperature.

Experimental Studies on Bagasse Ash-Based Self-Compacting Alkali Activated Slag Concrete

In the present study, an attempt was made to develop Self Compacting Alkali Activated Slag Concrete mixes incorporating Bagasse Ash as binder content. This study investigates the physical and mechanical properties of Bagasse Ash based Self Compacting Alkali Activated Slag Concrete (BSAASC) with varying proportions of Bagasse Ash. Lime and GGBS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) are used along with Bagasse Ash as binder materials in the BSAASC. The total binder content was restricted to 600kg/m3 containing Bagasse Ash at 10%, 20% and 30% of total binder content. The solution-to-binder ratio was 0.6. the dosage of Na2O was varied by 5%, 6% and 7%. The molarity of the alkaline solution is 1M. By using Minitab Statistical Software nine mixes were produced with 3 factors and 3 levels. The analysis was done by Desirability Function Approach (DFA) to check the effectiveness of the considered factors. The workability tests for properties of concrete samples are carried out according to EFNARC guidelines. Microstructural studies such as SEM, EDX and XRD analysis were also carried out, showing denser morphologies indicating effective activation of slag by the alkaline solution.

Influence of bagasse ash powder and marble powder on strength and microstructure characteristics of alkali activated slag concrete cured at room temperature for rigid pavement application

In this research, an attempt is made to partially replace ground granulated blast furnace Slag (GGBS) with a binder rich in SiO2 and CaO in alkali activated slag concrete (AASC) to increase workability and setting time. GGBS is replaced with bagasse ash powder (BAP) in 5%, 10%, and 15% of the binary mix, and subsequently with marble powder (MP) in 5% and 10% of the binary mix. After establishing the best mix for both binder replacements, a ternary mix with 5% BAP and 10% MP is created. The fine aggregates used in the comparison are 100 % river sand and slag sand. 10 M sodium hydroxide and the alkaline to binder ratio is 0.4, were used. Mechanical properties such as compressive strength, split tensile strength, and flexural strength are performed cured at 1, 3, 7, and 28 days samples. To further understand the intrinsic mechanism of strength development, microstructure, morphology and mineralogy on AASC are investigated. Based on the findings, it can be inferred that AASC mixes have a higher strength than OPC mixes. The mechanical strengths of the AASC binary mix with 10% MP and 5% BAP are higher. The microstructural analysis reveals the mixes developed with BAP and 100 % GGBS, had a denser microstructure than the normal mixes. The mechanical properties obtained for most of the AASC mixes are significantly higher than the IRC SP:62-2014 recommendations for rigid pavements for low volume roads.

Bond strength characteristics of high strength alkali activated slag concrete mixes

Bond characteristics are influenced by several factors such as concrete compressive strength, type, diameter, and embedment length of the bar and confinement of concrete. Herein, an attempt has been made to evaluate the bond strength characteristics of a new class of high-strength, flowable, alkali activated slag concrete mixes made using the industrial by-products from iron and steel industries. Such evaluations are made using the results of direct pull out tests where again, the bond stress – slip behaviour of the trial mixes at different ages are also studied. GGBFS was used as the principal binder along with fine amorphous quartz powder in the development of the present class of high strength, flowable AASC mixes. While mixtures of steel slag sand and quartz sand were used as the fine aggregates, 12.5 mm down electric-arc furnace slag aggregates constituted the coarse aggregate fractions in all these mixes. The alkaline solutions used consisted of mixtures of specified amounts of sodium hydroxide flakes dissolved in the calculated quantity of water pre-mixed with the liquid sodium silicate solution. The experimental study was planned based on Taguchi’s design of experiments methodology. A set of AASC mixes were developed and evaluated for their workability characteristics along with compressive strengths at the ages of 3, 28, 56 and 90 days. Bond strength characteristics of a set of nine of such mixes were evaluated in an initial calibration phase. Strength prediction equations were then derived based on those initial results, the predictive capability of which were then assessed and ascertained with actual results of experiments on a set of six new mixes, in the prediction phase. Further better bond stress-slip behavior, with higher bond strength values, varying in the range of 12–14 MPa as compared to control OPC based reference concrete mix were obtained for the AASC mixes.

An experimental study on the development of self-compacting, alkali-activated slag concrete mixes using industrial by-products under ambient curing

This study was carried out to develop self-compacting alkali-activated slag concrete (SCAASC) by using industrial wastes/by-products subjected to ambient curing. These SCAASC mixes were developed by using ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) as a binding material and unprocessed steel slags such as blast furnace slag (BFS) and electric arc furnace slag (EAFS) as a fine aggregate and coarse aggregate, respectively. Here in this study, four parameters were considered the most controlling factors, such as binder content, water-to-binder ratio, Na2O percentage and activator modulus, at each of the three levels. There are eighty-one mix combinations of these parameters and their levels. Since there are so many mixes, it was impossible to study all SCAASC mixes experimentally. Therefore, Taguchi’s method of design of experiment technique was used to optimize the total number of experiments to perform in this study. As per this method, a detailed study corresponding to nine SCAASC mixes (called calibration mixes) was performed, and then their results were used to develop regression equations. These regression equations were used to predict the mechanical strengths of the remaining SCAASC mixes. The accuracy of these regression equations was very good, which was verified by comparing their results with the experimental results of six more SCAASC mixes (called verification mixes).

An experimental study on the development of self-compacting alkali-activated slag concrete mixes under ambient curing

This study was carried out to develop alkali-activated blast furnace slag concrete having self-compacting properties under ambient curing. Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag was used as the binder, and the blended sodium silicate liquid and sodium hydroxide pellets were added to activate the GGBFS. Fine aggregate and coarse aggregate were replaced by unprocessed blast furnace slag and electric arc furnace slag. There were a huge number of parameters, such as binder content, water-binder ratio (w/b), Na2O% and activator modulus (Ms), that influence the fresh and hardened properties of self-compacting alkali-activated Slag concrete. Taguchi’s Design of Experiments (DOE) method was used to minimize the possible number of mixes to perform experiments. Taguchi’s DOE method uses a specific design based on the orthogonal arrays to understand the entire parametric space with a less number of possible experiments. Therefore, based on Taguchi’s DOE method, detailed experiments were carried out corresponding to only nine mixes known as calibration mixes. Mix-7 shows higher compressive strength (at 28 days), modulus of elasticity, split tensile and flexural strength are 46.2 M of 46.2 MPa, 30.27 GPa, 4.43 MPa and 5.31 MPa, respectively. The results of this study show that the 28 days mechanical strength of SCAASC mixes is most controlled by Na2O% followed by binder content (GGBFS), Ms value and w/b ratio.

Mechanical and fracture properties of alkali activated concrete containing different pozzolanic materials

Environmental considerations have caused the alkali-activated slag (AAS) cements to emerge as a promising sustainable substitute for the ordinary Portland cement (OPC). This study is aimed to the results of some comprehensive experimental researches performed on the AAS concrete with different types of partial replacement of binder including fly ash, silica fume, and red mud in terms of mechanical and different-mode fracture properties. According to the results, all AAS concrete mixes made with mineral admixtures (except 70% fly ash) exhibited mechanical strength comparable to that of the OPC concrete, and results of the fracture toughness in pure mode I (tensile opening), mode II (shear in-plane), and results of the fracture toughness in pure mode I (tensile opening), mode II (shear in-plane) and mode III (shear out-plane) showed that the trend of tensile and shear performance of concrete mixes are nearly similar. Based on the results of pull-off adhesion test and image processing, the high paste strength in different AAS concrete mixes caused a better aggregates-paste bonding strength.

Effects of fiber addition on performance of high-performance alkali activated slag concrete mixes: An experimental evaluation

There is an ever-increasing awareness on issues connected with emission of high amounts of greenhouse gases from various industries, including that from the concrete construction industry. Performances of alternative binder systems including geopolymers and alkali activated slag concretes are being investigated in this context. There is again a continuous drive to enhance their performances, both when green and on getting hardened and so also, simultaneous efforts are being made to take advantage of all the various fast-track, state-of-art construction technologies, leading to efficient, eco-friendly and economical infrastructure projects. The present authors have developed and evaluated a new set of such alkali activated slag concrete mixes having self-compacting property, along with higher mechanical properties (hereafter referred to as HPAASC mixes) using three industrial by-products, all obtained from iron and steel industry. While these HPAASC mixes have higher compressive strengths (in the range of 70–90 MPa), reasonable split and flexural strengths and are self-compacting, they continue to be brittle just as other high strength concrete mixes. In order to improve their cracking behaviour during failure, either under mechanical loads or on exposure to higher temperatures, addition of increasing amounts of steel fibers in HPAASC mixes is contemplated. Hence in the present study, the attempt is to study the effect of incorporation of fibers (within a small range of 0.4 − 0.8%) in the new class of high-performance, fibre reinforced. Self-compacting alkali-activated slag concrete mixes – (referred to as HFSASC hereafter). The present study evaluates the properties such as flow ability, compressive strength and flexural toughness performances for these mixes. Results in the present study indicate that, while all the HFSASC mixes exhibit satisfactory passing and flowing abilities specified as per EFNARC standards for self-compacting mixes, they exhibit enhanced toughness characteristics too.

Experimental studies on shear strength characteristics of alkali activated slag concrete mixes

In the present study an attempt has made to study the shear strength characteristics of alkali activated slag concrete mixes developed using steel slag sand and Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag aggregates, respectively, as the fine and coarse aggregates. These mixes use the ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) as the primary source material. Thus it is to be recognized that all the three materials used – GGBFS, slag sand and EAF slag aggregates are by-products of the Iron and Steel Industry, and are available in very large quantities demanding safe disposal. Different amounts of Sodium silicate solutions, with specified amounts of Sodium hydroxide flakes dissolved in them, are used as alkaline solutions. The test results indicate higher compressive strengths values for all the mixes in the range of 50–70 MPa with their shear strength values ranging between 7.5 and 12.0 MPa. Further the relationship between shear strength and compressive strength of the AASC mixes was also developed.

A study on initial setting time and the mechanical properties of AASC using the PS ball as fine aggregate

India is the second largest producer of cement in the world with an annual production of 455 Million Tonnes (MT) which is expected to reach up to 550MT by 2020. In India, the increased demand for cement in the construction industry is required to meet the needs of infrastructure development. However, the production of Portland cement releases significant amounts of CO2 to the atmosphere. Therefore, it is necessary to look for sustainable solutions for concrete production by the use of supplementary cementitious materials. The alternative replacement for Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) can be Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS), Fly-ash, Silica fume, Rice-husk ash, which is the various industrial by-products. In this present work, an attempt was made to develop Alkali Activated Slag Concrete (AASC) using Precious Slag (PS) ball as fine aggregate. The development of AASC was made with GGBS as the principal binder. Mixes were developed with binder content 443 kg/m3, Sodium Silicate (SS)/Sodium Hydroxide (SH) ratio of 1 and their performance when exposed to ambient temperature were studied. Alkali binder ratio (0.3) with 8, 10, 12 and 14M NaOH was selected for all the AASC mixes. The test results showed that the slump values for the different mixes satisfying the MoRTH guidelines for concrete pavements. The AASC mixes have higher compressive strength ranging between 41–64 MPa. The fatigue life of the AASC mix was has improved by the addition of PS ball, at the higher concentration of NaOH.

Effect of addition of OPC on Performance characteristics of Self-compacting Alkali activated slag concrete mixes

An attempt has been made in the present research to develop construction friendly, self-compacting, alkali-activated slag concrete mixes with ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) as the major source of binder material. In an effort to make the concrete mixes more eco-friendly and sustainable, by-products from Iron and Steel Industry such as steel slag sand and Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) slag aggregates, were used as the fine and coarse aggregates respectively. While the total binder content has been varied in the range of 700 – 800 kg/m3 (in increments of 50 kg/m3), all the trial mixes had a constant w/b ratio of 0.40. Different amounts of sodium silicate solutions, with specified amounts of sodium hydroxide flakes dissolved in them, are used as alkaline solutions, with the combined Na2O percentage in them varying between 6% - 8%. Test specimens were cast with mixes which showed enhanced flow-properties as per relevant EFNARC guidelines and were tested for their mechanical strength and durability characteristics. Effect of admixing of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in smaller percentages (2.5% - 10 %, in increments of 2.5%), on the performance characteristics of this novel class of AAC mixes is evaluated. Increased cement contents are found to lead to better flow ability properties and higher strengths values with lower sorptivity values in all the Cement-Admixed, Self-compacting, Alkali-Activated Slag Concrete mixes (CASAASC mixes) tested herein. Studies with a scanning electron microscope have shown more densified morphologies developed, accounting for better performances of these mixes.

Studies on high performance alkali activated slag concrete mixes subjected to aggressive environments and sustained elevated temperatures

In contemporary constructions, there is a continuous drive for enhancing the performances of concrete mixes, both green and as well as on hardened state. Again there are simultaneous efforts to take full advantage of all the various fast-track, state-of-art construction technologies, leading to early completion of efficient, economical and eco-friendly infrastructure projects. The present authors have developed a new class of high performance self-compacting, alkali activated slag concrete mixes (HPAASC) using three industrial by-products, all obtained from iron and steel industry and have evaluated them for their strength properties. While these HPAASC mixes have higher compressive strengths (about 70–90 MPa) and reasonable split-tensile and flexural strengths, they are also self-compacting in nature. In the present paper, the durability performance of this class of mixes on long-term exposure to aggressive environments like acids, sulphates and chlorides is discussed. Strength deteriorations of the standard test specimens subjected to 5% concentrated sulphuric acid solution and so also in 10% magnesium sulphate solution were monitored for a period of one year. The impermeability of the mixes against chloride-ions was evaluated using both Bulk diffusion test (BDT) and the Rapid chloride penetration test (RCPT). Further these mixes were also evaluated for their performance on exposure to sustained elevated temperatures in the range of 200–800 °C. All the specimens were further analysed for their microstructural studies. Results in the present study indicate that, all the HPAASC mixes exhibit better resistances to aggressive environments and sustained elevated temperatures as compared to the OPC-based reference concrete mix.

Studies on development of high performance, self-compacting alkali activated slag concrete mixes using industrial wastes

In the present study, development of a class of High Performance Alkali Activated Slag Concrete mixes (hereafter referred to as HPAASC mixes) is discussed. These mixes are developed using three industrial wastes from Iron and Steel industry. While Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) was used as the main binder, in the development of these HPAASC mixes, steel slag sand and Electric Arc Furnace slag (EAF slag) have been employed in the fine aggregate and coarse aggregate fractions of them. Higher flow characteristics, as those of self-compacting concrete mixes, as well as enhanced mechanical strength properties of these mixes are discussed in detail. The alkaline solutions used consist mixtures of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solutions, with a constant activator modulus (ratio of SiO2/Na2O) of one maintained in them. Taguchi’ design of experiments methodology was used to reduce the experimental efforts.The formulation of all the mixes developed herein was based on Taguchi’s L-9 orthogonal array. Flow and strength properties of a set of nine mixes were used for performance evaluation purposes in an initial, calibration phase. Strength prediction equations were derived based on such results, the predictive capability of which were then assessed and ascertained with actual results of experiments on the next six new mixes, in the prediction phase. Test results indicated a higher flowability values for all the mixes (with slump flows greater than 700 mm), good filling and passing abilities, all satisfying the EFNARC (European Federation of Specialist Construction Chemicals and Concrete Systems) recommendations for SCC mixes. Higher compressive strengths (65–90 MPa), split-tensile strengths (4.8–5.3 MPa), flexural strengths (6.5–7 MPa), and Modulus of Elasticity (30.4–36.2 GPa) were observed along with lower water absorption values (2.1–2.7%) for all the HPAASC mixes tested herein. Microstructure studies were conducted on samples from the fractured surfaces of test specimens from different mixes, using advanced SEM, EDX and XRD analyses and the results are discussed.

Performance of alkali-activated slag concrete against sulphuric acid attack

This study aims to investigate the performance of alkali-activated slag concrete (AASC) and conventional concrete (CC) against sulphuric acid attack. From the preliminary investigations conducted on 18 trial mixes of AASC, four AASC mixes (S–0.4–2.33–16M, S–0.5–2.33–12M, S–0.5–1.0–12M and S–0.5–2.33–16M) apart from CC mix are considered in this study. Concrete specimens of size 100 mm have been cast and cured under two curing regimes, namely ambient curing and heat curing. The specimens under heat curing are kept at a temperature of 60 °C for a period of 24 h. The CC and AASC specimens are exposed to sulphuric acid solution of 2.5, 5 and 10% concentrations for different immersion periods of 56, 91 and 180 days. The parameters that are examined in this study are weight change, depth of penetration and residual compressive strength apart from changes observed in visual appearance. The test results show that on exposure to sulphuric acid solution of 2.5, 5 and 10% concentrations, weight loss and penetration depth of AASC specimens are significantly less than those of CC specimens. The residual compressive strength is more for AASC specimens compared to CC specimens. Out of four AASC mixes considered, S–0.5–2.33–12M mix exhibits better performance against acid attack.

An experimental investigation on self-compacting alkali activated slag concrete mixes

In present work, an attempt has been made to develop self-compacting, alkali activated slag concrete mixes, using steel slag sand as fine aggregate and EAF (Electric Arc Furnace) slag as coarse aggregate. The study investigates the properties such as compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and water absorption of these mixes. Development of Self-Compacting Alkali Activated Slag Concrete mixes (hereafter referred to as SCAASC mixes) was made with GGBFS (Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag) as the binder, with its content varying between 700 kg/m3 and 900 kg/m3 of fresh concrete. The net W/B (water to binder) ratio of the mixes was varied between a narrow 0.47 – 0.48 range. The alkaline solutions had Na2O percentages in the range 7 – 9%, but a constant activator modulus was maintained at 1.0 in all the mixes. In order to optimise the number of trial mixes to be tested, Taguchi's design of experiments methodology was adopted. A total of nine mixes were formulated using Taguchi orthogonal L9 array. Results showed the slump flow values for the mixes greater than 700 mm, with their L–Box ratios and V-Funnel values ranging between 0.90 and 0.95 and 9 – 11 s respectively, satisfying the EFNARC guidelines. Results also showed good compressive strengths (65–80 MPa), split-tensile strengths (2–4 MPa) and low water absorption values in the range of (2%–3%). The microstructural studies such as SEM, EDX and XRD analysis were also carried out, showing denser morphologies clearly indicating effective activation of slag by the alkaline solution.

Performance of alkali activated slag concrete mixes incorporating copper slag as fine aggregate

In this present study, copper slag (CS) is proposed as an alternative to river sand as fine aggregate in alkali-activated slag concrete (AASC) mixes. The relative performance of alkali activated slag concrete mixes with CS as fine aggregate is compared to conventional Ordinary Portland Cement concrete (OPCC) mix in terms of their workability, strength and durability parameters. The results indicate that, AASC mixes with CS, as a replacement to sand upto 100% (by volume), show no marked loss in strength characteristics. AASC mixes with either sand or CS possess similar modulus of elasticity, lower total porosity, lesser water absorption and reduced chloride ion penetration as compared to OPCC. Strength-retention characteristics of AASC mixes with sand/CS on exposure to sulphate and acid-rich environment are also studied. Use of AASC mixes for structural application reduces carbon footprint, decreases water consumption and cost. Use of CS as fine aggregate reduces river sand consumption as an added benefit.

Flexural Fatigue performance of Alkali Activated Slag Concrete mixes incorporating Copper Slag as Fine Aggregate

Abstract The present investigation attempts a detailed study of mechanical properties and fatigue characteristics of a new class of Alkali Activated Slag Concrete (AASC) mixes incorporating Copper Slag (CS) as fine aggregates. The natural river sand is replaced with Copper Slag, upto 100% (by volume) as fine aggregate in these AASC mixes. The behavior of plain concrete prisms, cast with this range of AASC mixes under dynamic cyclic loads with sand/CS fine aggregates is studied and is compared with conventional OPC-based concrete specimens. The results indicate that incorporation of CS even upto 100% as fine aggregates, did not have any adverse effects on the mechanical properties of AASC mixes. The AASC mixes with CS displayed slightly better fatigue performance as compared to AASC mix with river sand. An attempt is also made herein to statistically describe the fatigue life data of AASC mixes using a 2-parameter Weibull distribution.

PURPOSES : This study set out to investigate the fundamental properties of alkali-activated concrete (AAC) using modified slag as the pavement maintenance material. METHODS: The material properties of modified slag based alkali-activated concrete (MSAAC) were analyzed and evaluated against those of alkali-activated slag concrete (AASC). Several mix formulations were considered, including one MSACC and four AASCs. The main variables considered in the study were slump, air content, compressive strength, rapid chloride permeability test, scaling resistance, freeze-thaw test, XRD, SEM, and EDS. RESULTS: MSAAC exhibits a compressive strength in excess of 21 MPa six hours after curing. Also, the charge passed of the MSACC was found to be less than 2000 coulombs after seven days and about 1000 coulombs after 28 days. The weight loss determined from a scaling test did not exceed in the case of the MSACC, but that of the AASCs had already exceeded at the 10th cycle. Based on the results of the freeze-thaw test, the relative dynamic modulus of every mix was found to be in excess of 90%. An energy dispersive spectroscopy(EDS) analysis found that the weight rate percentage of the calcium and aluminum in the MSAAC mix is twice that of the AASC mixes. CONCLUSIONS : It was found that the MSAAC mix exhibits significantly better performance than AASC mixes, based on various fundamental properties.
