Alcoholic Marriages: A Longitudinal Empirical Assessment of Alternative Theories

AbstractThis investigation is an empirical test of three conceptualizations of the alcoholic marriage: the Disturbed Personality Hypothesis (DPH), the Decompensation Hypothesis (DH), and their rival, the Stress Theory (S T). Fourteen spouses of hospitalized' alcoholics were given the Psychological Screening Inventory (PSI) and the Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist (MAACL) at admission, six weeks and six months after discharge. The alcoholic's drinking behaviour was assessed by the Quantity Frequency (QF) and Alcohol Impairment (AI) Indices.One‐way repeated measures analyses of variance revealed no significant change in PSI scores, but significant (p < 0.05) decreases in QF, AI and two (Anxiety and Depression) out of the three MAACL scales. The results support the ST and contradict the DPH and DH, but the authors emphasize that the value of this report is mostly as a demonstration project to stimulate much needed large‐scale longitudinal investigations.

Interpersonal patterns in alcoholic marriages.

In a previous study (Drewery and Rae, 1969), using the Interpersonal Perception Technique (I.P.T.) (Drewery, 1969), it was found that while the husbands and wives of the non-patient marriages had a clear concept of masculinity which they shared, the partners in the alcoholic marriages lacked this consensus; they were confused about the male socio-sexual role, and this confusion expressed itself in a conflictful interplay of dependence and independence needs. The conclusions then reported were applied to alcoholic marriages as if they formed a homogeneous group. The present study was designed to test the hypothesis that when alcoholic marriages are dichotomized in terms of the wives' Pd characteristics, two qualitatively and quantitatively distinct marital patterns would be revealed.

A group comparison of alcoholic and non-alcoholic marriages using the interpersonal perception technique.

The relationship between a patient's illness and psychiatric disturbance in the spouse is a matter of importance and increasing interest (Penrose, 1944; Slater and Woodside, 1951; Gregory, 1959; Ryle and Hamilton, 1962). Explanations based on environmental conditions (Pond, Ryle and Hamilton, 1963), genetic factors (Coppen, Cowie and Slater, 1965) and assortative mating mechanisms (Kreitman, 1962; Nielsen, 1964) have been found to be inadequate and research has come to focus on the nature of the marital interaction itself (Kreitman, 1964).

Some Characteristics of Alcoholic Marriages Differentiated by Level of Deviance

A sample of 262 women married to alcoholics were asked about their childhood, courtship, and marital experiences, stressing their husbands' drinking behavior and their own attitudes toward marriage and alcoholism. The sample was divided into two based on the level of social or economic associated with the husband's drinking, and comparisons were made between the two deviance groups on personal and marital characteristics. The group with more associated with the husband's drinking indicated more disturbance in their background and less successful marital outcome.

Fortunately, it was too much trouble to box it up and return, so other chapters were glanced at and the volume found to be well worthwhile. Dr. Eleanor Easley writes feelingly and honestly about the stresses of the physician dealing with marital problems: For the doctor, and especially for the gynecologist, dealing with marriage problems is an unsatisfactory business. Success for a doctor is to cure patients. Amelioration is about the best that one hopes for... this partial result is only obtained by the use of much time. Folks want a quick, easy cure... the last thing they want is to help cure themselves.
