1. The synthesis of glycosides of oleanolic acid has been carried out. 2. On the basis of the synthesis of the glucoside of oleanolic acid, the possibility of using sugar orthoesters for the selective glycosylation of the alcoholic hydroxy group of a hydroxy acid containing an unprotected carboxyl has been shown.

Treatment with nitric acid of concentration less than 80% effects the selective nitration of the primary hydroxy groups of meso-erythritol with formation of the 1,4-dinitrate. 2. meso-Erythritol 1,4-dinitrate was synthesized by the oxidation of cis-2-butene-1,4-diol dinitrate with potassium permanganate. 3. The selective O-nitration of primary hydroxy groups with nitric acid of concentration less than 80% is probably a general reaction for primary-secondary polyhydric alcohols of normal structure.

1. From the kernels of the seeds ofAlangium Lamarki, Thwaites, a sterol has been obtained crystallising in colourless silky needles and having a molecular formula C42H84O7. This has been named “alangol”. 2. The sterol has been found to contain an alcoholic hydroxy group, and a number of derivatives of this substance have been obtained.

Direct catalytic benzylation of amines with benzylic alcohols to give benzylamines has been newly developed by using palladium/phosphine-borane catalyst system. In this catalytic reaction, the linking between both phosphine and borane moieties in the ligand is very important. Hydroxy group of benzylic alcohols is activated by Lewis acidic borane to form a benzylpalladium intermediate which is attacked by amines to give benzylamine products.
