A systematic review and meta-analysis of the relationship between youth drinking, self-posting of alcohol use and other social media engagement (2012-21).

Social networking sites (SNS) are interactive internet-based social platforms that facilitate information sharing. A growing body of literature on exposure to, and self-posting of, alcohol-related content on SNS has examined the relationship between SNS use and alcohol consumption in young people. This study aims to synthesise the literature exploring the relationship between exposure (i.e. viewing or listening of alcohol-related media) and self-posting (i.e. uploading images or text of alcohol content) of alcohol-related media on SNS on alcohol consumption. A pre-registered systematic review was conducted in June 2022 within PubMed, Scopus, PsycINFO and Web of Science. Original prospective and cross-sectional studies assessing youth and young adults (≤ 24 years of age) that measured exposure to alcohol-related media or posting of alcohol-related content on SNS and self-reported alcohol consumption outcomes were included. Meta-analyses were conducted on comparable methodologies. Thirty studies were included (n = 19,386). Meta-analyses of cross-sectional studies showed both greater exposure (five studies; pooled β = 0.34, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.23, 0.44, i2 = 27.7%) and self-posting of alcohol-related content (six studies; pooled β = 0.57, 95%CI = 0.25,0.88, i2 = 97.8%) was associated with greater alcohol consumption. Meta-analyses of three prospective studies also identified that greater exposure predicted greater future alcohol consumption (three studies; pooled β = 0.13, 95%CI = 0.11,0.15, i2 = 0.0%). Narrative analyses of studies that could not be meta-analysed due to incompatible methodologies were also conducted. Most studies (all four prospective, one of two cross-sectional) identified positive associations between exposure to alcohol-related content and greater average consumption. Most studies (three of four prospective, four of six cross-sectional) reported a positive association between of alcohol-related self-posting and greater average alcohol consumption. Both exposure to, and self-posting of, alcohol-related content on social networking sites are positively associated with current average consumption, problem drinking, and drinking frequency.

The Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) is a highly appropriate data resource to use to address this question. ALSPAC is well placed in the UK's catalogue of large birth cohort studies, sitting between the 1970 British Cohort Study and the Millennium Cohort Study, uniquely assessing the development of children born in the 1990s. Digital interventions to moderate alcohol consumption in young people: a Cancer Prevention Europe overview of systematic reviews.

Strategies to reduce alcohol consumption would contribute to substantial health benefits in the population, including reducing cancer risk. The increasing accessibility and applicability of digital technologies make these powerful tools suitable to facilitate changes in behaviour in young people which could then translate into both immediate and long-term improvements to public health. We conducted a review of systematic reviews to assess the available evidence on digital interventions aimed at reducing alcohol consumption in sub-populations of young people [school-aged children, college/university students, young adults only (over 18 years) and both adolescent and young adults (<25 years)]. Searches were conducted across relevant databases including KSR Evidence, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) and Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE). Records were independently screened by title and abstract and those that met inclusion criteria were obtained for full text screening by two reviewers. Risk of bias (RoB) was assessed with the ROBIS checklist. We employed a narrative analysis. Twenty-seven systematic reviews were included that addressed relevant interventions in one or more of the sub-populations, but those reviews were mostly assessed as low quality. Definitions of "digital intervention" greatly varied across systematic reviews. Available evidence was limited both by sub-population and type of intervention. No reviews reported cancer incidence or influence on cancer related outcomes. In school-aged children eHealth multiple health behaviour change interventions delivered through a variety of digital methods were not effective in preventing or reducing alcohol consumption with no effect on the prevalence of alcohol use [Odds Ratio (OR) = 1.13, 95% CI: 0.95-1.36, review rated low RoB, minimal heterogeneity]. While in adolescents and/or young adults who were identified as risky drinkers, the use of computer or mobile device-based interventions resulted in reduced alcohol consumption when comparing the digital intervention with no/minimal intervention (-13.4 g/week, 95% CI: -19.3 to -7.6, review rated low RoB, moderate to substantial heterogeneity).In University/College students, a range of E-interventions reduced the number of drinks consumed per week compared to assessment only controls although the overall effect was small [standardised mean difference (SMD): -0.15, 95% CI: -0.21 to -0.09]. Web-based personalised feedback interventions demonstrated a small to medium effect on alcohol consumption (SMD: -0.19, 95% CI: -0.27 to -0.11) (review rated high RoB, minimal heterogeneity). In risky drinkers, stand-alone Computerized interventions reduced short (SMD: -0.17, 95% CI: -0.27 to -0.08) and long term (SMD: -0.17, 95% CI: -0.30 to -0.04) alcohol consumption compared to no intervention, while a small effect (SMD: -0.15, 95% CI: -0.25 to -0.06) in favour of computerised assessment and feedback vs. assessment only was observed. No short-term (SMD: -0.10, 95% CI: -0.30 to 0.11) or long-term effect (SMD: -0.11, 95% CI: -0.53 to 0.32) was demonstrated for computerised brief interventions when compared to counsellor based interventions (review rated low RoB, minimal to considerable heterogeneity). In young adults and adolescents, SMS-based interventions did not significantly reduce the quantity of drinks per occasion from baseline (SMD: 0.28, 95% CI: -0.02 to 0.58) or the average number of standard glasses per week (SMD: -0.05, 95% CI: -0.15 to 0.05) but increased the risk of binge drinking episodes (OR = 2.45, 95% CI: 1.32-4.53, review rated high RoB; minimal to substantial heterogeneity). For all results, interpretation has limitations in terms of risk of bias and heterogeneity. Limited evidence suggests some potential for digital interventions, particularly those with feedback, in reducing alcohol consumption in certain sub-populations of younger people. However, this effect is often small, inconsistent or diminishes when only methodologically robust evidence is considered. There is no systematic review evidence that digital interventions reduce cancer incidence through alcohol moderation in young people. To reduce alcohol consumption, a major cancer risk factor, further methodologically robust research is warranted to explore the full potential of digital interventions and to form the basis of evidence based public health initiatives.

Aggression and Motivation of Alcohol Consumption in Young People

The article features the theoretical and methodological approaches to aggressiveness, which can be divided into aggression, hostility, and anger. Aggression is a normal manifestation of life, coming-of-age, and social adaptation. Aggressive behavior can be constructive, instrumental, and destructive. It depends on both personality and group standards. Aggressive behavior is often legitimized as part of adaptation to the norms and rituals of a particular social group. Alcohol is responsible for many cases of aggressive behavior inside a community. Young people drink alcohol to achieve a desirable social status, improve their mood, raise confidence, and blend in. Drinking often legitimizes aggressive behavior. Particular predictors of group drinking can be used for sampling. Subjects with pronounced hostility demonstrate poor prospects for control of activity and emotions; they tend to violate social norms and are likely to develop addiction. Young people with a high level of general aggressiveness are guided by ataractic and hedonistic motivation for alcohol consumption.

Alcohol and the young: how does the press face the problem?

&#x0D; Background: alcohol is an important component of the Mediterranean diet and its moderate use is protective against cardiovascular risk. Binge drinking, i.e. the heavy consumption of alcohol over a short period of time, is the main consumption pattern of young people in Western countries and may lead to severe toxic effects in many organs. Mass media often address the issue by suggesting prevention measures; however, they may also have the unintended effect of encouraging alcohol misuse. This study aims to assess how the Italian press faces excessive alcohol consumption in young people, comparing the messages given by the press with scientific recommendations.&#x0D; Methods: articles published by the 6 best-selling Italian newspapers and the 4 best-selling Italian magazines were collected from October 15th to November 14th 2009. Medline database, governmental and non-governmental sources were searched for scientific recommendations regarding primary prevention of alcohol misuse. Press articles were described and analysed by filling out a predefined form.&#x0D; Results: fourteen newspaper articles regarding alcohol were found, 79% belonging to the news section. Six quotations of scientific recommendations were found: two about drink-driving, two about raising public awareness, one about Monitoring and Evaluation, and one about community and workplace action.&#x0D; Conclusions: scientific recommendations were often inadequately reported by the Italian press. The most covered recommendations, designed driver and public educational intervention, are also the least effective according to international literature. Therefore, a further effort is needed to tackle this issue in a more scientifically sound way.&#x0D;

Sexual Risk Behaviors Among Youth in Soweto, South Africa During the COVID-19 National Lockdown.

BackgroundAssessment of sexual risk behavior among youths is crucial for HIV prevention strategies. However, the literature on sexual behavior in youth during the COVID-19 pandemic is sparse.AimThis study surveyed sexual risk behavior among youth in Soweto, South Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic national lockdown in 2020.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional telephonic survey on socio-demographics and HIV risk behaviors among youth aged 18–24 years during level 3 of the lockdown. Frequencies and their respective percentages were determined for categorical variables and stratified by biological sex. Chi-square analysis was used to compare categorical variables. All data were analyzed using SAS software.OutcomesA risk assessment for HIV questionnaire was used to assess sexual risk behaviors. Also, substance use was assessed through a developed yes/no questionnaire.ResultsOf the 129 participants, 83.0% (n = 107) had a sexual partner; 52% of those who had a sexual partner were females, 60.7% (65/107) had one current sexual partner and 39.2% (42/107) had more than 1 sexual partner. Most reported sex within 1 week (54.2%, n = 58/107) and 30.8% within a month (30.8%, n = 33/107). Sex was with a dating partner (86.0%, n = 92/107) and 63% used a condom during last sexual contact. Males were more likely than females to have one-night stand sexual partners (23.5% vs 7.1%; P = .0176), make weekly changes in partners (17.7% vs 5.4%; P = .0442) and used condoms with their partners (92.2% vs 53.6%; P < .0001) during last sexual contact. The majority reported alcohol use (69.0%, n = 89/129). Males were more likely than females to use alcohol on a weekly basis (21.4% vs 6.4%; P = .0380). About 55.9% had penetrative sex under the influence of substances.Clinical TranslationThis study gives an insight to the sexual risk behaviors among young people which is crucial for HIV prevention interventions.Strength & LimitationsThis was the first study investigating sexual behavior in youth during the COVID-19 pandemic. The main limitations of this study relate to the sample size and sampling strategy. As the sample was not representative of the population of young people in Soweto and South Africa, the results cannot be generalized. An analysis of how lobbying by the alcohol industry has eroded the French marketing regulation law

Abstract Background In response to the positive association between alcohol marketing and young people's alcohol consumption, several countries have adopted marketing regulation laws. This is the case in France with the 1991 Evin Law, which prohibits advertising in media targeting young people and regulates content in authorized media. However, this law has faced intense opposition from its inception. The aim of this research is to identify the arguments and lobbying strategies deployed by the alcohol industry to undermine it. Methods We conducted semi-structured interviews with 18 French key informants involved in implementing and/or updating the Evin Law, including initiators of the law, former ministers, non-governmental organizations, national public health institutes and academic associations and institutions. A thematic analysis was conducted to highlight strategies and arguments employed by the alcohol industry to undermine the Evin Law using Savell et al. framework (2016). Results Several of the identified strategies and arguments to combat marketing regulations were similar to those identified in other countries, while some strategies and arguments were specific to the French context. These include highlighting winegrowing and its integration into decision-making bodies, and forming alliances with parliamentarians. These specific features may in part be explained by the economic significance of alcohol and wine at the heart of French culture. Conclusions For the first time, the long-term lobbying strategies and arguments used by the alcohol industry to weaken the Evin Law are analyzed from the perspectives of those closely involved in its implementation. This study may be useful for other countries that have - or are in the process of - implementing alcohol marketing regulation laws. Key messages The pioneering French alcohol marketing regulation law has faced intense opposition from the alcohol industry, in particular viticulture. Analyzing the strategies and arguments used by the alcohol industry to erode this pioneering law is important to better counter them.

Alcohol use among young Australian adults in May-June 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic: a prospective cohort study.

AimsTo estimate change in young people's alcohol consumption during COVID‐19 restrictions in Australia in early‐mid 2020, and test whether those changes were consistent by gender and level of consumption prior to the pandemic.DesignProspective longitudinal cohort.SettingSecondary schools in New South Wales, Tasmania and Western Australia.ParticipantsSubsample of a cohort (n = 443) recruited in the first year of secondary school in 2010–11. Analysis data included three waves collected in September 2017–July 2018, September 2018–May 2019 and August 2019–January 2020), and in May–June 2020.MeasurementsThe primary predictors were time, gender and level of consumption prior to the pandemic. Outcome variables, analysed by mixed‐effects models, included frequency and typical quantity of alcohol consumption, binge drinking, peak consumption, alcohol‐related harm and drinking contexts.FindingsOverall consumption (frequency × quantity) during the restrictions declined by 17% [incidence rate ratio (IRR) = 0.83; 95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.73, 0.95] compared to February 2020, and there was a 35% decline in the rate of alcohol‐related harms in the same period (IRR = 0.66; 95% CI = 0.54, 0.79). Changes in alcohol consumption were largely consistent by gender.ConclusionsFrom a survey of secondary school students in Australia, there is evidence for a reduction in overall consumption and related harms during the COVID‐19 restrictions.

Análisis de las redes sociales en el consumo de alcohol

El consumo de alcohol se ha convertido en un problema grave de salud, en la actualidad, entre los jóvenes de 14 y 30 años. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue analizar la comunicación en redes sociales en relación al consumo de alcohol. Durante el periodo de tiempo descrito se recopilaron un total de 2063 comentarios de Twitter. Los resultados muestran las diferentes opiniones que tienen los usuarios, los medios divulgativos, así como la policía o los grupos de protesta sobre la ingesta de alcohol. De modo, que la mayoría de jóvenes apoyan el consumo de alcohol como forma de divertirse, mientras que la policía, los grupos de protesta y los medios de divulgación muestran a la sociedad y concretamente a los jóvenes las consecuencias que tiene el consumo. Como conclusión, cabe destacar como las redes sociales se han convertido en la nueva forma de comunicarse entre los jóvenes, lo que facilita el intercambio de opiniones, ideas e información a nivel mundial. Así, han posibilitado observar como las redes sociales influyen en el consumo y la prevención del alcohol, por tanto, las redes pueden ser utilizadas como herramientas para realizar campañas y programas de prevención del consumo de alcohol en los jóvenes, reduciendo la ingesta del mismo.

Manifestaciones de la dinámica familiar en factores de riesgo socioculturales que inciden en el consumo de alcohol en jóvenes de 12 a 18 años en tiempo de Covid 19

El presente artículo tuvo como objetivo. Identificar los factores de riesgo socioculturales que inciden en el consumo de alcohol en jóvenes de 12 a 18 años de edad en la institución educativa Pablo VI en el municipio de Barrancas La Guajira, desde diferentes perspectivas se caracterizó por su proceso metodológicamente, implícito en la investigación de tipo descriptiva, enfoque cuantitativo, diseño no experimental, transeccional y de campo, la población fue&#x0D; 30 estudiantes. Los resultados evidencian situaciones problematizadas que requieren de acciones articuladas para buscar alternativas dada la relevancia para la salud mental. Se destaca la Guía de Intervención mhGAP, 2010, de acuerdo con la cual es necesario que se “Promueva un cambio en el entorno del adolescente en lugar de enfocarse directamente en el adolescente como el problema. Por ejemplo, promueva la participación en la escuela o el trabajo y en actividades después de clase / trabajo que ocupen el tiempo del adolescente, y promueva la participación en actividades de grupo que faciliten la adquisición de habilidades y la contribución a sus comunidades. Es importante que los adolescentes se involucren en actividades que les interesen” (p.63)

Tobacco and alcohol content in soap operas broadcast on UK television: a content analysis and population exposure.

ABSTRACTBackgroundExposure to tobacco and alcohol content in media is a risk factor for smoking and alcohol use in young people. Our previous research suggested that tobacco and alcohol imagery is common in soap operas. We now report an analysis of tobacco and alcohol content in a sample of soap operas broadcast in the UK.MethodsWe used 1-minute interval coding to quantify tobacco and alcohol content in all episodes (including advertisement breaks) of six soap operas broadcast on UK television during three separate weeks in November and December 2018 and January 2019.ResultsWe coded 2222 intervals from 87 episodes and 360 intervals from 77 advertisement breaks. Tobacco content was rare, occurring in 4% of all intervals across 30% of episodes, the only tobacco appearances in adverts appeared in anti-smoking advertising. Alcohol occurred in 24% of intervals across 95% of episodes and in 13% of advertisement intervals. The programmes delivered ~381.28 million tobacco and 2.1 billion alcohol gross impressions to the UK population, including 18.91 million tobacco and 113 million alcohol gross impressions to children.ConclusionWhilst tobacco was rare, alcohol content was common, resulting in billions of viewer impressions. Soap operas represent a potential driver of alcohol consumption in young people.

Impulsivity, Emotional Intelligence, and Alcohol Consumption in Young People: A Mediation Analysis.

Alcohol consumption in young people is a public health problem. Due to the harmful consequences and the large population using alcoholic substances, it would be important to determine the biological, psychological, and social factors associated with alcohol use and abuse. The main object of this study is to explore which components of impulsivity, according to the main theoretical models, have predictive power regarding alcohol consumption in young people. A secondary objective is to determine if emotional intelligence has a mediating role between the components of impulsivity and alcohol consumption, and thus specifically contribute to the knowledge about the mediation processes between those variables that are involved in the initiation and maintenance of alcohol consumption. For this purpose, 384 participants were recruited (83.1% females, n = 319), with mean age of 20.46 years (SD = 1.90; range 18–25). All participants were alcohol consumers at the beginning of the study. Data collection was conducted via online survey; impulsivity was evaluated by several questionnaires (Sensation Seeking Scale Form V, Barratt Impulsivity Scales 11, and Sensitivity to Punishment and Sensitivity to Reward), and emotional intelligence was evaluated by the Trait Meta-Mood Scale. The results reveal that the dimension of disinhibition (a dimension of the sensation search scale) significantly has the highest predictive value on alcohol consumption. Moreover, our data show that the total effect and direct effect of disinhibition on frequency of alcohol consumption were both significant. The mediating role of emotional intelligence in this process was also significant. These findings show which variables should be considered to prevent alcohol consumption in young people.

Epidemiology of alcohol-related emergency hospital admissions in children and adolescents: An e-cohort analysis in Wales in 2006-2011.

ObjectiveHarmful levels of alcohol consumption in young people are prevalent and of increasing public concern in the western world. Rates of alcohol-related emergency hospital admissions in children and young people between 10 to 17 years were described, and the reasons for these admissions and their association with socio-demographic factors were examined.MethodsE-cohort data were extracted from the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage Databank, which contained alcohol-related emergency hospital admissions (N = 2968) from 2006 to 2011 in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years in Wales. A generalised linear mixed model was fitted using a log-link with a population offset to the data to calculate incident rate ratios (IRRSs).ResultsThere was a general decreasing trend from 2006 to 2011 in the number and rate of alcohol-related emergency hospital admissions; the mean age of admission was 15.4 (standard deviation 1.4) years. In each of the four youngest age groups (10–13,14,15,16 years), females had higher IRRs than males. Males had slightly higher IRR compared to females only in the oldest age group (17 years). IRRs increased with increasing deprivation. The majority (92%) of the admissions lasted one day and most of the admissions (70%) occured during the last three days of the week with a peak on Saturday. The length of stay in hospital was longer in cases when self-harm were present. Multiple admissions showed high prevalance of serious self-harm cases in females. The number of admissions with injuries and falls were higher for males than females.ConclusionFemale children and adolescents were more likely to be admitted to hospital for alcohol-related reasons. These data illustrate the significant burden of alcohol-related harm in young people and highlight the need for interventions and policies that promote safe drinking practices among young people to prevent future alcohol-related harm during the life-course.

Impact of Exchange Stay on Alcohol Consumption: Longitudinal Exploration in a Large Sample of European Students.

Each year, more than 300,000 university students take part in European exchange programs. Besides their positive educational and cultural impacts, these programs are also reputed to immerse students in a high-risk festive context where excessive alcohol consumption is strongly present.There is thus a crucial need to evaluate the actual impact of those exchange stays on alcohol consumption. Study abroad (n=3,950) and local (n=3,950) European students completed a 2-part longitudinal survey and reported their alcohol consumption before (T1) and during (T2) their exchange stay (or at the beginning of the academic year and 6months later for local students, constituting the control group). During their exchange stay, individuals studying abroad showed more excessive and harmful alcohol consumption behaviors than local students, as measured by increased general alcohol consumption and binge drinking (BD) scores at T2. In particular, study abroad students under 20years of age and performing their exchange stay in eastern Europe were the most exposed to excessive alcohol consumption and BD. These results constitute the first large-scale longitudinal confirmation that exchange stays indeed constitute risky contexts in which students significantly increase their consumption and present stronger alcohol-related problems. In view of the rapid and deleterious effects of alcohol consumption in young people, it is essential to promote prevention campaigns targeting this population to limit public health consequences and possible evolution toward severe alcohol use disorders.

Consumo de riesgo de alcohol en estudiantes de Preparatoria en Morelia, Michoacán, México

Alcohol is an abuse substance since it can cause dependence that is associated with Impaired control over its use. Excessive drinking causes illness and distress to the drinker and his or her family and friends. Alcohol-related problems represent an immense economic loss to many communities around the world. Alcohol consumption in young people should be considered as a priority health problem, screening this consumption is crucial for diagnosis and provides a framework in the intervention to help avoid its consequences. The aim of this study was the assessment of alcohol consumption in high school students of Preparatoria number 2 of UMSNH, identifying factors related with this hazardous consumption. The study was nested in a health diagnostic interview of 1 663 students (14 to 24 years old). Audit test found a 41.25 % of usual alcohol consumption. In this group, 135 students were identified as alcohol hazardous consumers and were compared with other 135 nondrinker students as a control group. Multiple logistic regression test was used for Odds Ratio (OR) calculation with a 95 % confidence interval (CI 95 %); in addition, Chi-square test was performed. An elevated number of students with risk alcohol consumption were detected, living in a single-parent family duplicates possibilities of consumption, continuous drinking leads to consume another abused substances and to a premature sexual behavior.

Expectativas del consumo de alcohol y consumo de alcohol en jóvenes de áreas rural y urbana

Background: The consumption of alcohol is among the main health problems worldwide due to its physical, psychological and social consequences, it has been identified that the expectations of alcohol consumption are a variable that can be related to the alcohol consumption. Objective: To identify the expectations towards alcohol consumption, to determine the relationship between expectations and alcohol consumption among young people in rural and urban areas. Methodology: The design of the study was descriptive correlational, comparative; random sampling. The sample consisted of 169 young people from the urban area and 133 young people from the rural area of the state of Nuevo Leon. Results: The expectations towards the consumption of alcohol in the subscale of disinhibition (U = 9573.00; p = 0,023) and in the subscale of increase of sexuality (U = 9724.00; p = 0,041) it was different within the to area, it is characterized by greater medians and medians among young people in rural areas; the expectations of alcohol consumption reported positive and significant correlation with the harmful consumption of alcohol in rural youth (rs= 0,435; p < 0,001) and young people in urban areas (rs= 0,290; p < 0,001). Conclusion: Due to the problem that consolidates the alcohol consumption in young people, it is important to carry out more research that allows the design of effective strategies to attend to specific populations

Excessive alcohol consumption in young people is a major public health problem worldwide. Whether alcohol consumption early in life is associated with later development of severe liver disease is uncertain. In this issue of the Journal, Hagström et al. used data on alcohol consumption at conscription to military service from 43,296 men (18–20 years) in Sweden during the late 60s. During a mean follow-up of 38 years, 383 men developed severe liver disease. Alcohol consumption in people between 18 and 20 years old was associated with an increased risk of development of severe liver disease in a dose-response pattern. This important study highlights that alcohol consumption in young men is associated with an increased risk of severe liver disease. The risk was dose-dependent, with no sign of a threshold effect. Current guidelines for safe alcohol intake in men might have to be revised, and more effective campaigns aimed at preventing excessive alcohol consumption among young people should be launched.

Treatment of alcohol dependence. Alcohol and the young: social point of view.

Adolescents are the most vulnerable group for alcohol-related diseases, as starting to drink at a young age is associated with an increased risk of alcohol dependence in adulthood. Young people tend to drink large amounts of alcohol to seek out strong emotions and for reaching fun at all costs through the psychotropic properties of alcohol. The behavioural motivations of this kind of drinking (binge drinking) depend on the lack of awareness of the harmful effects of alcohol, in the rite of social conviviality (a condition for which alcohol is attributed to the function of facilitating the aggregation among young people), in the absence of personal interests, lack of controls and family habits. Actions to be taken to limit or stop harmful alcohol consumption in young people should be based on interventions aimed at delaying the age of first contact with alcoholic beverages through the implementation of educational campaigns aimed at young people, their families and the whole society.

Beyond Basic Feedback in Mobile Brief Interventions: Designing SMS Message Content for Delivery to Young Adults During Risky Drinking Events.

BackgroundBrief interventions can reduce alcohol consumption in young people through screening and delivery of personally relevant feedback. Recently, Web and mobile platforms have been harnessed to increase the reach of brief interventions. Existing literature on mobile-based alcohol brief interventions indicates mixed use of theory in developing interventions. There is no research available to guide the development of SMS text messaging (short message service, SMS) interventions delivered during risky drinking events.ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to develop and pilot an alcohol-related risk-reduction brief intervention delivered by SMS to Australian young adults during drinking events. This paper describes the development of intervention message content, with specific focus on the context of delivery during drinking events.MethodsA sample of 42 young adults attended 4 workshops; these comprised focus-group style discussion on drinking habits and motivations, discussion of intervention design, analysis of existing alcohol media campaigns, and participant development of message content. Data were analyzed thematically.ResultsParticipants described a focus on having fun and blocking out any incongruent negative influences during drinking episodes. For content to be acceptable, nonjudgmental and non-authoritative language was deemed essential. A preference for short, actionable messages was observed, including suggestions for reminders around drinking water, organizing transport home, checking on friends, and plans the next day. Participants were excited about the potential for messages to be tailored to individuals, as previous alcohol-related campaigns were deemed too generic and often irrelevant. Normative-based messages were also perceived as largely irrelevant as participants felt that they understood the drinking-related norms of their immediate peers already.ConclusionsFindings from this study offer insights into young adults’ drinking events and practical advice for designing alcohol-related brief interventions. During our formative development process, we demonstrated a neat correspondence between young people’s preferences for alcohol harm reduction interventions and the theoretical principles of brief interventions, including acceptable topics and message style.
