A Convergence of Science and Art: Simpson-Middleman Paintings Featured in Boeing Advertisements from the 1950s

By 1956, the Newark, New Jersey–based, art team of Marshall S. Simpson (1900–1958) and Roslynn E. Middleman (1929–2003) had produced a large and important series of abstract paintings that depicted various interpretations of space and the night sky. Eleven of these works were featured in employment advertisements placed over the next two years by the Boeing Airplane Company (now the Boeing Company) in Scientific American and elsewhere. Signed “Simpson-Middleman,” the paintings combined science, mathematics, and art into a single medium. Only one of the original works used by Boeing can now be located. This article tells for the first time the story of the unusual Simpson-Middleman art collaboration and the Boeing ad campaign, then documents in an illustrated checklist their paintings with related captions used in each of the seventeen Scientific American advertisements that incorporated them.

The Meaning in English Airplane Company Slogans : Semantic Studies

The aims of this study were to find out the types of meaning, and advertising objectives in airplane company slogans. Based on the research phenomenon, public does not understand the meaning of the message of the English slogan of the airline company as an advertising medium for the public. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data consisted of 42 airplane company which operated in Indonesia. The data were analysed by using the seven types of meaning theory by G. Leech (1981) and advertising objective theory by (Kotler, PhilipKeller, Kevin Lane : 2009). The data were divided into Seven Types of meaning, they were Conceptual meaning, Connotative meaning, Social meaning, Affective meaning, Reflected meaning, Collocative meaning, and Thematic meaning. The data were also analysed by using advertising objective, they were to inform, to persuade, and to remind. The final results of analyzing the activities of 42 English slogans of airplane company slogans operating in Indonesia were found using Thematic meaning.The main theme that is usually carried is usually always related to safety, so it's not surprising that there are many words of "safety" that are the focus and emphasis in their slogans. Some other airplane company try to say in their slogan that the company is better, more friendly, warmer in terms of comfort in traveling using their airplane company.The final result of the analysis of 42 English slogans of airplane company operating in Indonesia that the researcher found that the company's goal of advertising slogans were to inform customers.

is an aeronautical and aerospace manufacturer. Its head office is located in Chicago, Illinois. Its two largest plants are located in Wichita, Kansas and Everett, near Seattle. This aircraft manufacturer specializes in the design of civil aircraft, but also in military aircraft, helicopters and in satellites and rockets with its Defense, Space and Security division. In 2012, it ranks second in world military equipment sales. The company was born on July 15, 1916, thanks to its two fathers William E. and George Conrad Westervelt and is named B and W. In 2008, is the world leader in the defense sector. In November 2016, announced a restructuring of its defense arm with the suppression of 500 positions, the closure of two plants in El Paso and Newington and the displacement of 2,000 employees.

The Niagara Frontier Defense League's patriotic war on labor: the case of Curtiss Aeroplane, 1917–1918

This essay explores the Niagara Frontier Defense League (NFDL) and its effort at combating labor at the Curtiss Aeroplane & Motor Company during the Great War. Initially formed by Buffalo businessmen to monitor the region's sizeable German population, by Fall 1917, the NFDL turned its attention to tackling the region's labor problems, developing an array of covert mechanisms designed to stop unionization and regain control over Buffalo's wartime labor market. Yet, as NFDL activities at the Curtiss Aeroplane show, the League failed to accomplish its objectives and actually worked to the detriment of the company.

Kaizen costing for lean manufacturing: a case study

In the past decade due to increasing global competition US firms have radically changed their manufacturing practices to improve their competitiveness. In pursuing this goal they have adopted a number of advanced techniques, such as just-in-time, total quality management, lean manufacturing, flexible manufacturing systems, process improvement, and design for manufacturability, to name a few. The objectives of all these programmes have been to reduce cost, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and increase flexibility on the factory floor. Support systems such as finance and cost management, however, have generally not kept pace with the level of corresponding operational changes being implemented. This paper presents a case study of kaizen costing as practised by Boeing Commercial Airplane Company, IRC Division. The purpose of this study is to describe a method used to set kaizen costs which will provide relevant cost data to support lean production decisions that would be useful to practitioners.

A Trove of New Works by Thomas Pynchon? &lt;i&gt;Bomarc Service News&lt;/i&gt; Rediscovered

Early in 1960, after having graduated from Cornell and while writing V., Thomas Pynchon moved to Seattle and began working for the Boeing Airplane Company. What Pynchon did while working at Boeing has puzzled scholars almost from the moment of the very private author's literary debut. When we try to delve into his stint at Boeing–first mentioned by Lewis Nichols and Dick Schaap–we reach dead ends or find conflicting information. Yet Pynchon's time at Boeing is perhaps the most documented period of his life, and over the years a number of interesting (though not always accurate) bits of information have emerged.

Numerical modeling of a wing skin peen forming process

For many years shot peering has been used to provide fatigue resistance and form to airplane wing skins at the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company. In this process, the peening intensities used to form a new wing skin have been obtained through the use of approximate geometric relationships, along with a considerable amount of trial and error testing. This paper describes a numerical model that has been applied to replicate the shot peening process used at Boeing. The model is used to predict peening intensities and the initial size of the skin (flat pattern) given an arbitrary aerodynamic contour requirement. Discussion focuses on the finite element method and special optimization techniques used in the approach.

Eating style differences between hyperlipidemic men and women

Two hundred eighty-nine hyperlipidemic participants (200 men and 89 women) from the Boeing Airplane Company completed an eating style questionnaire at the beginning of an eight week class series to learn the NCEP Step-Two eating plan. Participants also completed a baseline 4-day food record (4DFR) prior to entering class. The eating questionnaire contained 10 items pertaining to meal frequency, shopping, food preparation, and eating out practices. Forty percent of men and 43% of women indicated they skip breakfast more than 50% of the time. These participants also reported a higher % of kcals from fat on baseline 4DFR's (36.3% vs. 32.7% fat, p=.009, for men and 36.1% vs. 33.0 fat, p=.058, for women). Whereas 92% men and 90% women indicated they eat lunch and dinner at least 5 days per week. Women reported shopping for food an average of 1.7 times per week compared to men who shopped less at 1.3 times per week (p=.005). Women also reported preparing food more often than men (p=.002). Of women, 67% reported preparing food 7–21 times per week while 71% men reported 0–6 times per week. In addition, women described work day meal preparation from often to always in a hurry more than men (p=.01). However, no difference between women and men was found for non work days (p=.43). Determining eating style patterns for meal frequency, shopping, meal preparation may be useful for designing and implementing NCEP Step-Two meal plans and identifying added sources of fat in the baseline diet.

Original formulation of the finite element method

Following a brief summary of the 1952 state of the art of structural analysis, the paper describes the circumstances that led to the formulation of the finite element method by members of the Structural Dynamics Unit at the Boeing Airplane Company. It is noted that the central feature of the procedure that was developed is the evaluation of the stiffness properties of structural elements based on assumed sets of displacement interpolation functions. As originally applied, the method used direct stiffness assembly to establish the structure stiffness; then the analysis was performed by the displacement method.

With the death of Peter Reyner Banham in March 1988 at the age of 66, the architectural world lost one of its most distinguished historians and irrepressible critics. His career, by normal academic standards, was wide-ranging and helps to explain his unconventional and, at times, idiosyncratic approach to architecture. During the war Banham very successfully studied at the Bristol Aeroplane Company’s engine division, thereby acquiring a thorough grounding in the theory and practice of mechanical engineering. SAC was formed in July 1961 by three directors, Roger Smedley, Peter Allard, and Ian Creer to provide contract design services to the engineering industry. Plessey Aerospace Ltd of Tichfield, Hants, has been awarded an order by the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company worth almost £1 million for fuel boost pumps for the 737–300 aircraft. Already regarded as one of the world's best selling jet airliners, the aircraft employs six Plessey fuel pumps in centre and wing tanks.

F-4 Functional Modernization

Evolving aircraft and engine technologies, as well as advancements in avionics, have resulted in a new generation of fighter aircraft. In order for an air force to remain survivable in such an environment it must face the necessity of either acquiring new aircraft or upgrading its fleet. Today, acquisition of new aircraft may not be an economically or politically viable solution. The newest aircraft, those with a thrust-to-weight ratio exceeding 1 to 1, generally exceed $20 million, exclusive of support costs. Politically, sale of such state-of-the-art aircraft to friendly countries may not be possible given the current FX aircraft export policy, and the fiscal posture of the country. However, there is an alternative to new aircraft acquisition, and that is functional modernization: the modernization of potentially viable systems through the implementation of new and available technologies. The Boeing Military Airplane Company and Pratt &amp; Whitney have teamed in the newest aircraft functional modernization proposal, the F-4 Super Phantom. The full modernization package includes a new centerline conformal fuel tank, new digital avionics, and re-engining with new PW1120 engines. This paper examines the initial feasibility study conducted by Pratt &amp; Whitney and Boeing to determine the feasibility of a functionally modernized F-4.

World‐wide Operation of Twin Jet Aircraft

Concerned with the increasing use of twin jet aircraft over longer ranges, this paper by Richard W. Taylor of the Boeing Commercial Airplane Company put the present level of operations of these types in historical perspective by considering how the need for additional power was met, first, by providing a greater number of engines (since increased horsepower or thrust was not available). This state of affairs continued for a considerable time and it has only been in the relatively recent past that the ability to produce more and more power from an engine has met performance requirements.
