A novel vertical element-pulse coding scheme for range-ambiguous clutter elimination

The coexistence of clutter range ambiguity and range dependence in the airborne forward-looking radar may render the common space–time adaptive processing (STAP) ineffective. To cope with this challenge, a novel vertical element-pulse coding (EPC) radar is proposed in our paper. Note that both the elevation angles and coding factors determine the transmitted spatial frequency of the proposed vertical EPC radar. Therefore, the clutters corresponding to different ambiguous areas can be distinguished in the spatial frequency dimension based on this property. The element-pulse decoding and pre-STAP filtering are devised to separate and extract these clutters corresponding to different ambiguous areas. In the following, the clutter elimination is independently accomplished for each ambiguous area that has been separated. Consequently, the clutter range ambiguity as well as clutter range dependence are addressed simultaneously. The efficacy of the proposed approach is verified with simulation experiments.

Data-driven airborne bayesian forward-looking superresolution imaging based on generalized Gaussian distribution

Airborne forward-looking radar (AFLR) has been more and more impoatant due to its wide application in the military and civilian fields, such as automatic driving, sea surveillance, airport surveillance and guidance. Recently, sparse deconvolution technique has been paid much attention in AFLR. However, the azimuth resolution performance gradually decreases with the complexity of the imaging scene. In this paper, a data-driven airborne Bayesian forward-looking superresolution imaging algorithm based on generalized gaussian distribution (GGD- Bayesian) for complex imaging scene is proposed. The generalized gaussian distribution is utilized to describe the sparsity information of the imaging scene, which is quite essential to adaptively fit different imaging scenes. Moreover, the mathematical model for forward-looking imaging was established under the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion based on the Bayesian framework. To solve the above optimization problem, quasi-Newton algorithm is derived and used. The main contribution of the paper is the automatic selection for the sparsity parameter in the process of forward-looking imaging. The performance assessment with simulated data has demonstrated the effectiveness of our proposed GGD- Bayesian algorithm under complex scenarios.

Development of Simulation Models Supporting Next-Generation Airborne Weather Radar for High Ice Water Content Monitoring

In this article, a method of extending airborne weather radar modeling to incorporate high-ice-water-content (HIWC) conditions has been developed. A novel aspect is incorporating flight test measurement data, including forward-looking radar measurements and in situ microphysics probes data, into the model and part of the evaluations of modeling. The simulation models assume a dual-polarized, airborne forward-looking radar, while for single-polarized operations, the index-of-dispersion is included as a helpful indicator for HIWC detection. The radar system simulation models are useful for design evaluations for the next generation of airborne aviation hazard monitoring and incorporate HIWC hazard detection algorithms. Example applications of the simulator, such as hazard detection based on the simulated HIWC flight encounter scenarios based on specific numeric weather prediction (NWP) model outputs, are discussed.

Adaptive Doppler Compensation for Mitigating Range Dependence in Forward-Looking Airborne Radar

In this paper, we present ground moving target indication (GMTI) signal processing algorithm encompassing clutter suppression, target detection and parameter estimation. One of the most significant yet least publicized is the need of the GMTI mode for a forward-looking airborne radar. The integration of GMTI mode in a forward-looking airborne radar allows reconnaissance and surveillance operations in all weather conditions. In this context, space time adaptive processing (STAP) offers a unique prospect of enabling the GMTI mode in forward looking airborne radar. STAP is a two-dimensional filter designed to suppress platform motion-induced clutter Doppler spread. Interference is characterized by a covariance matrix. In the case of a forward-looking airborne radar, the clutter Doppler is dependent on range. Clutter Doppler dependency on the range renders the training cells heterogeneous. The heterogeneity effects are particularly prominent in the near range bins. Non-homogeneous training cells have a deleterious effect on STAP performance. In this study, we propose an adaptive Doppler compensation to mitigate the degraded STAP performance in the near range bins. The adaptivity feature circumvents the need for the availability of radar parameters in real-time. The real time implementation of STAP is impeded by requirements of a large number of training samples and covariance matrix inversion. Therefore, there is a dire need to devise a framework to detect and estimate target parameters within the STAP. In this regard, we propose an efficient STAP algorithm to detect and estimate target parameters. STAP weights are applied to the input data to obtain a 3D array. The range projection of the 3D array is utilized to detect and estimate the range of the target, while the angle–Doppler projection is used to estimate spatial and temporal parameters of the target. Most of the literature on STAP is geared towards a known covariance matrix. The assumption of a known covariance matrix may degrade STAP performance because of the inherent mismatches between the actual and assumed target steering vectors. In this study, we estimate the covariance matrix based on the synthetic data generated from a model of an airborne phased array radar. The developed STAP algorithms closely mimic a real-time implementation scheme in an airborne radar platform. The results of the proposed algorithm are validated through target parameter estimation and STAP metrics on synthetic data.

Robust space‐time adaptive processing based on covariance matrix reconstruction and steering vector correction

Clutter presents considerable heterogeneity in forward-looking airborne radar (FLAR) applications and conventional space-time adaptive processing (STAP) methods are sensitive to model mismatch. As a result, when a strong target signal contaminates the training samples, despite the use of guard cells, the performance of conventional STAP methods degrades significantly. In this study, a robust method, which involves reconstructing a target-free covariance matrix and correcting the presumed steering vector to prevent target cancellation in FLAR, is proposed. First, the target-free covariance matrix is reconstructed through integrating the spatial–temporal spectrum over a sector separated from the desired frequency and direction of targets. Subsequently, the mismatch between presumed steering vector and actual steering vector is corrected via quadratic optimisation. In addition, the processing scheme is applied to real-measured clutter data, and the experimental results validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Airborne Forward-Looking Radar Super-Resolution Imaging Using Iterative Adaptive Approach

Airborne forward-looking radar (AFLR) imaging has raised many concerns in fields of Earth observation, independent of weather and daytime. Constrained by imaging principles, conventional high-resolution radar imaging techniques such as synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and Doppler beam sharpening (DBS) are incapable of AFLR imaging. The real aperture radar (RAR) can obtain AFLR images using a scanning antenna, but suffers from coarse cross-range resolution. Recently, there has been much attention paid to the iterative adaptive approach (IAA), which draws from the benefits of RAR imaging and provides improved cross-range resolution. However, earlier work on the IAA imposed a convolution model on the received azimuth echo, neglecting the effect of the Doppler phase. This model mismatch degrades the imaging performance for moving platforms. To settle this problem, this paper first establishes a Doppler-convolution model of AFLR imaging, where both Doppler phase and antenna convolution effects are considered, allowing more accurate reconstruction when applying the IAA to formulate a super-resolution image. Then, a data-depended approach for Doppler centroid estimation is proposed to circumvent the problem of low estimation precision using platform motion parameters delivered by navigational devices mounted on the radar platform. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed implementation of the IAA based on the Doppler-convolution model and Doppler centroid estimation can overcome the deficiencies of the SAR and DBS techniques in the forward-looking imaging direction, and present a noticeably superior performance as compared with conventional AFLR imaging methods.

Pre-Compensation Clutter Range-Dependence STAP Algorithm for Forward-Looking Airborne Radar Utilizing Knowledge-Aided Subspace Projection

The range-dependence of clutter spectrum for forward-looking airborne radar strongly affects the accuracy of the estimation of clutter covariance matrix at the range under test, which results in poor clutter suppression performance if the conventional space-time adaptive processing (STAP) algorithms were applied, especially in the short range cells. Therefore, a new STAP algorithm with clutter spectrum compensation by utilizing knowledge-aided subspace projection is proposed to suppress clutter for forward-looking airborne radar in this paper. In the proposed method, the clutter covariance matrix of the range under test is firstly constructed based on the prior knowledge of antenna array configuration, and then by decomposing the corresponding space-time covariance matrix to calculate the clutter subspace projection matrix which is applied to transform the secondary range samples so that the compensation of clutter spectrum for forward-looking airborne radar is accomplished. After that the conventional STAP algorithm can be applied to suppress clutter in the range under test. The proposed method is compared with the sample matrix inversion (SMI) and the Doppler Warping (DW) methods. The simulation results show that the proposed STAP method can effectively compensate the clutter spectrum and mitigate the range-dependence significantly.

Space-time Separated Interpretation Method for Forward-looking Airborne Radar Clutter Spectrum

在机载前视阵雷达中，由于杂波距离相关性的存在，导致待检测距离单元杂波的协方差矩阵估计存在偏差，致使空时自适应处理(STAP)的杂波抑制性能下降。空时插值法是一种内插变换方法，能够有效降低机载前视阵雷达杂波的杂波距离相关性，然而该方法计算量非常大，给它的实时处理带来困难。该文提出一种空时分离的插值方法，该方法将空时插值方法在空域和时域分别独立实现。与空时插值方法相比，该方法能够在性能损失不大的情况下，极大地降低计算量，并且当存在阵元误差时，该方法也能获得好的处理性能。计算机仿真结果验证了该方法的有效性。
