Only 4 species of Piptocephalis are known from India. Mehrotra (1960) reported a new species, P. debaryana, isolated from the dung of wild rat collected from the Agricultural Farm of the Botany Department, University of Allahabad. Mehrotra and Baijal (1963) described another P. indica, from rabbit dung collected from the Zoo at Lucknow. In the same paper they described an unnamed species isolated from the dung of Malayan squirrel collected from the Lucknow Zoo. I isolated P. tieghemiiana Matruchot from the air of Delhi (1966), and another species which does not resemble any hitherto described member of this genus. This is described here as a species nova.
