Technology for profitable transportation

With the close relationship which exists between the airline industry and aerospace, it is appropriate to begin an aerospace technology symposium with a short review of what the airline industry has achieved and where it is now going. The timing is similarly appropriate because it is the 50th anniversary of the true beginnings of the airline industry. Boeing introduced its B247 into service at the end of 1933, and Douglas followed with its DC2 in 1934. Both aircraft were major steps from previous technology, and created the equipment base from which air transportation could develop. At the same time, the Air Mail Act of 1934 created the organisational environment in which the industry could flourish and, inter alia, compelled Boeing and United Aircraft to divest themselves of airline interests and marked the true beginning of United Air Lines. TWA and American had preceded it by a few months, while General Motors were persuaded to sell off Eastern Air Linesonly a few weeks later.

The Historical Geography of Western Airlines

During this century airlines have been one of the most rapidly growing industries in the United States. As a consequence, the spatial development of airline networks or route structures provides an attractive subject for geographic analysis. Within the Pacific Coast region the evolution of Western Airlines supplies a particularly interesting case study. Unlike most U.S. trunk carriers, whose route structures have grown steadily over the years, Western Airlines has a record that is marked by several periods of substantial route loss and retrenchment. During its history, Western also has had the distinc tion of operating one of the few noncontiguous route systems. In addition, the territory served by the Western network has changed radically since the airline's formative period. Before embarking on a description and an analysis of Western's network development, it is necessary to discuss a number of factors that have had potent influence on the spatial evolution of this and other American airlines. Many of these factors lay beyond the decision-making capacity of individual companies. Federal regulation ranks prime among these factors influencing network development. By awarding contracts for carrying mail be tween specified cities, the federal government became responsible for the routes flown by the pioneer air carriers. Western was one of twelve companies to bid successfully on the initial air mail contracts offered in 1926. Although these contracts were crucial to the survival

The employment, utilization, and earnings of physician extenders

This paper reports some of the findings of an on-going research project on physician extenders (P.E.s). Data were collected between 1971 and 1973 utilizing an air mail survey, sent to Physician Assistants, Medex, and Nurse Practitioners. Included in this report is information on the distribution of physician extenders' tasks among patient care, laboratory work, clerical duties, and teaching responsibilities, as well as a discussion of their salary levels. A regression model is employed to analyze the affect the time spent by the physician extender in patient care either directly or indirectly supervised by a physician. A separate analysis of the determinants of the earnings of P.E.s is also presented. The results indicate that the physician extenders spend more of their time in patient care when working closely with three or fewer physicians in general medicine. Also, the amount of time in patient care under the indirect supervision of the physician is higher in general medicine and rural areas. The earnings function indicates that health experience prior to training as a physician extender, employment in a hospital, a public health clinic, or in a rural area has a positive impact on earnings.

Hourly Response of Laboratory-Reared and Native Male Pink Bollworms 1 to Traps Baited with Hexalure 2 , 3

A test was conducted for 22 Aug. to 4 Sept., 1969, at Borrego Springs, Calif., to determine if pink bollworm males reared in the laboratory (Mangum et al. 1969) with no attempt to duplicate natural photoperiod would show the same pattern of response toward sex pheromones as the native moths. Nineteen modified Frick traps were distributed through a 5-acre plot of cotton where irradiated (25 krad) laboratory-reared pink bollworms were being released each day. These moths were reared on diet containing Calco Oil Red dye to mark them (Graham and Mangum 1971) and irradiated as adults at Brownsville, Tex., and shipped via air mail to Indio, Calif. The traps were baited each week with 10 mg of the synthetic sex attractant hexalure (Keller et al. 1969) on a filter-paper dispenser. On 6 nights during the trapping period, collections of the released and native males were recorded each hour from sunset to sunrise. Wind direction and velocity at plant height and temperatures beneath the canopy also were recorded.

The effect of air or surface mailing of queen bees on subsequent breeding, honey production, and queen supersedure

Abstract There is some evidence that the transport of queens by air or surface mail may considerably increase their supersedure rate for the first year. Neither honey production nor the amount of brood produced was affected.

Progress in Radio Science 1966–1969

These volumes contain most of the papers presented during the scientific sessions of the Sixteenth General Assembly of URSI in August 1969. Work Sampling in Financial Management—Cost Determination in Post Office Department

Work Sampling has been described by some authorities as the best and most objective method of measuring the time and cost of performing the various functions of complex organizations for use in management, budgeting and setting performance standards. Yet its use for these purposes has been quite limited. This paper is designed to encourage further use of Work Sampling. It describes what is probably the largest continuing application of Work Sampling in the world, namely, that made by the Post Office Department. About 4.5 million observations are made during a year at randomly selected instants of time to estimate the cost of the in-office activities and over 200,000 employees participate each year. The paper describes the basic objectives served by the application, the size and composition of the universe of interest, the methods of sampling, the sample size used, the estimation procedure, the methods of measuring sampling variation and controlling the quality of the information. In addition, a few areas of research to improve the sample design are described. The Post Office Department needs to know the cost it incurs to handle and deliver the mail in each class (e.g., first class and air mail) in order to compare it with the corresponding postage or other revenue earned by class. This information is needed primarily to recommend postal rate changes to Congress. While the total cost of postal activities currently amounts to about $7 billion a year, a first step taken in estimating the cost of each class by probability sampling deals with the in-office costs. This cost currently amounts to about $4 billion a year. Later probability sampling applications will be extended to cover out-of-office and other postal costs. A sophisticated three-stage sample design was adopted. First, a stratified random sample of 500 post offices was selected. Stratification was based on size of office. Then, a digital one percent sample of employees in these offices was selected to participate each week. Finally, the work which the selected employees are performing is observed at four randomly chosen instants of time during their 8-hour work day. Thus, each employee is generally work-sampled at 20 instances a week and a total of about 4.5 million readings are made annually. A quality control type of edit and control system has been established to detect and correct field reporting errors, thus helping to obtain high quality of results.
