Values Identified in Different Groups of Air Force Nurses

Fundamental personal values are reflected in the choices and decisions made in every aspect of our lives. This descriptive study identified values held by a convenience sample of 224 Air Force nurses stationed at four U.S. Air Force medical facilities. Study participants identified seven of eight literature-supported values in the categories "important" or "very important" across the demographic factors of age, gender, educational level, military rank, marital status, and years of Air Force or civilian nursing experience. These seven values were ability utilization, achievement, altruism, autonomy, economic reward, economic security, and personal development. Personnel using this information may ease the transition process to military nursing, facilitate job placement to positions reflecting personally held values, and provide valuable insight for Air Force nurse recruiters who have limited knowledge of the nursing profession. In all, this would promote job satisfaction and Air Force nurse retention.

Gender camouflage: women and the U.S. military

Controversy about in the military continues, yet women's relations with the military go far beyond whether they serve in the ranks. Gender Camouflage brings together a diverse array of authors to explore the controversy surrounding women's military service, to examine the invisibility of civilian who support the institution, and to expose the military's efforts to camouflage their support and contributions. Contributors first consider nurses, servicewomen, military academy students, female veterans, and lesbians. The focus then shifts to military wives, employed by the DoD, and female civilian military instructors whose work is less visible but no less essential to the institution. The book also examines the experiences of outside of the military, such as comfort women near U.S. bases, engaged in peacework, and workers affected by military spending in the federal budget. Analytic chapters are juxtaposed with first-person narratives by who have actually been there, including a member of the first gender-integrated class at West Point, the first female civilian instructors at the U.S. Naval Academy, and an African American Air Force Nurse Corps veteran. Contributors include Connie Reeves, Georgia Clark Sadler, Gwyn Kirk, and Joan Furey.

The Air Force Nurse Intern Program

The Air Force Nurse Intern Program is a 5-month-long introduction to Air Force nursing for BSN-prepared graduate nurses. The program is designed to facilitate the transition from civilian nursing student to practicing Air Force Nurse Corps Officer. After attending Military Indoctrination for Medical Service Officers, newly commissioned nurses attend the program at one of 10 Air Force medical centers before going to their permanent duty stations. Preceptors guide and instruct the interns at each of four clinical rotation sites. The author, a former nurse intern, describes some of the many opportunities available to nurse interns.

Women at war: the story of fifty military nurses who served in Vietnam

Norman tells the dramatic story of fifty women-members of the Army, Navy, and Air Force Nurse Corps-who went to war, working in military hospitals, aboard ships, and with air evacuation squadrons during the Vietnam War. The military nurse experiment in Vietnam: stress and impact.

Demographic, health, and psychosocial data from two studies are presented on military nurses assigned to Vietnam. Army nurse subjects in the first study were grouped for comparison on three major variables: assignment to Vietnam before versus after the 1968 TET Offensive, type of nursing duties performed, and years of experience as a registered nurse (RN) prior to assignment in Vietnam. The second study compared another group of Army nurses with a group of Air Force and Navy nurses also assigned to Vietnam. Army nurses with less than two years RN experience prior to their assignment were found to be more at risk for such negative outcomes as difficulty establishing personal relationships and difficulty coping with stressful situations. Stress experiences, career dissatisfaction data, and health problems of military nurses and their children are reported. Also described are positive experiences of nurses in developing personal relationships in a rewarding professional environment.
