Doha round of WTO negotiations and the domestic support for agriculture in Serbia

Beside the fact that the green box essential inspection has, obviously, not been carried out, the long expected modality draft in the agricultural sector for July 2006 is full of opposing ponts of view and conflicting solutions to the problem. Thus, the negotiations have been completely suspended, as the very result of the lack of agreement in the field of agriculture (market approach and internal support). It is expected that Doha round of WTO negotiations should result with a significant improvement in reduction of trade distortion support. Serbia is in the process of joining the WTO and is intensively working on meeting the obligations that are expected to be completed in the process; in this case, in the field of internal support to agriculture. .

Serbian agriculture: Programmes of credit support by the state and commercial banks between 2004-2007

Serbian agricultural production accounts for a significant percentage of the share in GDP, and almost 1/3 of the Serbian population live on farms. There is a positive balance in food trade, and nearly 17 per cent of total Serbian export belong to agriculture. However, financial support to agricultural production is insufficient and incommensurate to the role and importance of agriculture in domestic economy in comparison with the practice in advanced economies and those in the region. If high interest rates, along with current credit conditions, remain, agriculture will not be able to advance and compete in foreign markets, however highly competitive its export potential may be.

Agriculture and the changes of the social structure: the case of Serbia

In this paper the author stresses the importance of the changes in the vertical dimension of social structure in CEE societies, focusing on the recent (from 1989) changes of the social structure in agriculture in Serbia. After a short historical review, the causes, the way and the results of these changes are analyzed. Furthermore, the situation in Serbia is compared with situations in some other CEE societies, with an attempt to explain the differences and find similarities. The changes of the social structure in agriculture in Serbia are discussed from the point of the stability of society and from the point of evolutionary capacity. The author concludes that the presented and discussed changes of the social structure in agriculture support the claim that, when speaking about structural changes in CEE societies in the last sixteen years, the notion of "transformation" is more useful in explanation than the notion of "transition".

Gis-based technologies and their application in agriculture

Geographical information systems are in use in business application for a long time, but their usage in agriculture is well known, too. This article shows the main structure of geographical information systems for decision support (spatial decision support systems) as advanced GIS technologies made for solving complex, semistructured or nonstructured problems and their application in the agriculture sector. GIS-based technologies has been reviewed through several examples of their use in agriculture and special respect has been given to the precision farming concept, giving short insight into SSToolbox software (SST). The last part of the article is dedicate to the possible usage of GIS-based technologies in the Serbian agriculture.
