Source-dependent absorption Ångström exponent in the Los Angeles Basin: Multi-time resolution factor analyses of ambient PM2.5 and aerosol optical absorption.

Advanced receptor models can leverage the information derived from optical and chemical variables as input by a variety of instruments at different time resolutions to extract the source specific absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) from aerosol absorption. The multilinear engine (ME-2), a Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) solver, serves as a proficient tool for performing such analyses, thereby overcoming the constraints imposed by the assumptions in current optical source apportionment methods such as the Aethalometer approach since the use of a-priori AAE values introduces additional uncertainty into the results of optical methods. Comprehensive PM2.5 chemical speciation datasets, and aerosol absorption coefficients (babs, λ) at seven wavelengths measured by an Aethalometer (AE33), were used in multi-time source apportionment (MT-PMF). The study focused on two locations in the Los Angeles (LA) Basin: Central LA (CELA, Main St.), an urban area surrounded by major freeways, and Rubidoux (RIVR), a residential area surrounded by local roads. Factor profiles and temporal variations of their contributions were obtained. Additionally, factor displacements (DISP) and profile constraints were applied. Five-factor solutions were obtained at both sites. At CELA, the resolved factors included traffic + crustal matter (traffic+ Cr_M), secondary sulfate + nitrate (SSN), biomass burning (BB), diesel emissions (DIE) and aged sea salt (ASS). Moreover, source-dependent AAE values at CELA were obtained without a-priori assumption, with values of 1.46 for traffic+ Cr_M, 1.45 for DIE and 2.37 for BB. At RIVR, the resolved factors were traffic+ Cr_M (AAE=1.24), particulate sulfate, particulate nitrate, BB (AAE=3.00) and aged sea salt. PM2.5 composition differed at both locations. SSN accounted for the largest fraction of the ambient PM2.5 mass concentration, their sum at the CELA site averaged 40% of the PM2.5 mass while the same species represented 77% at RIVR.

Absorption photometry of patterned deposits on IMPROVE PTFE filters

ABSTRACT The IMPROVE program (Interagency Monitoring of PROtected Visual Environments) tracks long-term trends in the composition and optics of regional haze aerosols in the United States. The absorptance of red (633-nm) light is monitored by filter photometry of 24 h-integrated samples of fine particulate matter (PM 2.5). These are collected every third day at about 150 rural and often remote locations. Systematic reanalyses of archived samples have established the reproducibility of these optical absorption measurements across decades and instrument systems, with a consistent calibration that is traceable back to 2003. IMPROVE samples for nondestructive analyses by photometry, gravimetry, and X-ray fluorescence are all collected on ring-mounted membranes of expanded PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene). Although attractively inert, low in blank mass, and optically thin, these media yield visibly nonuniform deposits that do not admit direct interpretation according to a naïve “Beer-Lambert” formulation of optical absorption. Most IMPROVE PTFE deposits exhibit a fine-scale “pixelation” shaped by the perforated screen that supports the membrane during sample collection. This paper extends the traditional Beer-Lambert interpretive model to accommodate the patterned deposits generated by IMPROVE and similarly aggressive sampling protocols on PTFE filters. The extended model is then used to assess the bias and epistemic uncertainty in the aerosol absorption coefficient that IMPROVE has historically reported. Implications Ambient fine aerosol particles are widely collected at high sample face velocities on PTFE (Teflon®) membrane filters backed by perforated support screens. The screens’ localized blockage of airflow can channel the resulting PM2.5 sample deposits into a pattern of discrete heavily loaded “pixels”, where the screen perforations allow flow through the membrane, separated by a lightly loaded background that reflects blockage by the screen. Such non-uniform deposits, collected throughout the United States on FRM filters to monitor NAAQS compliance and on IMPROVE filters to support the Regional Haze Rule, do not meet the requirements of the Beer-Lambert model for optical absorption measurements. This paper extends Beer-Lambert theory to accommodate patterned deposits, and assesses the bias and epistemic uncertainties introduced by historical (mis)reporting based on “Beer’s Law”. For samples of moderate (and lesser) absorptance, including the bulk of those collected at rural IMPROVE sites to track regional haze, usefully tight bounds are developed for this pixelation bias.

Vertical Profiles of Aerosol Optical Properties (VIS/NIR) over Wetland Environment: POLIMOS-2018 Field Campaign

This study aims to present the benefits of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) in atmospheric aerosol research, specifically to obtain information on the vertical variability of aerosol single-scattering properties in the lower troposphere. The results discussed in this paper were obtained during the Polish Radar and Lidar Mobile Observation System (POLIMOS) field campaign in 2018 at a wetland and rural site located in the Rzecin (Poland). UAS was equipped with miniaturised devices (low-cost aerosol optical counter, aethalometer AE-51, RS41 radiosonde) to measure aerosol properties (scattering and absorption coefficient) and air thermodynamic parameters. Typical UAS vertical profiles were conducted up to approximately 1000 m agl. During nighttime, UAS measurements show a very shallow inversion surface layer up to about 100–200 m agl, with significant enhancement of aerosol scattering and absorption coefficient. In this case, the Pearson correlation coefficient between aerosol single-scattering properties measured by ground-based equipment and UAS devices significantly decreases with altitude. In such conditions, aerosol properties at 200 m agl are independent of the ground-based observation. On the contrary, the ground observations are better correlated with UAS measurements at higher altitudes during daytime and under well-mixed conditions. During long-range transport of biomass burning from fire in North America, the aerosol absorption coefficient increases with altitude, probably due to entrainment of such particles into the PBL.

Physicochemical Characterization of Religious Burning Aerosols in Lhasa on the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau

AbstractReligious burning (RB) has been identified as a major source of atmospheric aerosols on the Qinghai‐Tibet Plateau. However, there is limited understanding of the detailed chemical composition, size distribution, and optical properties of RB aerosols in this region. To characterize these important aerosol properties, ambient PM2.5 and size resolved aerosols from RB emissions in Lhasa were collected during summer 2019. Organic functional group (OFG) and inorganic ion composition was measured using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and ion chromatography, respectively. The ambient PM2.5 was dominated by organic components, with the OFG concentrations significantly higher during religious events, reflecting the substantial impact of RB emissions on local air quality. The RB aerosols were characterized by high fractions of alkane (34%), hydroxyl (29%), and carboxylic acid (13%) groups, with peak mass in the accumulation mode (0.56–1.00 μm). The high abundance of hydroxyl group and the size distribution pattern suggested that the RB aerosols were formed from volatilization of fuel materials followed by unaltered condensation, a process that may be unique to the low‐temperature, low‐oxygen burning in the scattered burners at the temples. The absorption coefficient of RB aerosols showed similar size distribution to the mass size distribution, but the absorption Ångström exponent displayed the lowest value in the 0.56–1.00 μm size mode. This specific size distribution aligned with the mass fraction of carboxylic acids and mirrored the mass proportion of alkanes, suggesting that smaller and larger particles were enriched with substances that have higher light‐absorbing capabilities.

New insights from seasonal and weekly evolutions of aerosol absorption properties and their association with PM2.5 and NO2 concentrations at a central Mediterranean site

Aerosol absorption parameters were investigated in this study using the measurements performed by an aethalometer during a monitoring campaign from December 2021 to July 2022 in a suburban area in south-eastern Italy. The aerosol absorption coefficient was compared to both PM2.5 and NO2 concentrations from two nearby stations (a rural and an urban site). Different seasonal evolutions were identified for these extensive parameters, even if they also showed a common feature because all these parameters presented a higher variability in winter due to the highly variable meteorological conditions during that season. Intensive parameters like the aerosol absorption Ångström exponent and the PM2.5/PM10 ratio were also investigated showing the effects of wood burning from domestic heating and of vehicular traffic, especially both in the urban and in the suburban site. Then, the weekly evolution of both selected extensive and intensive parameters was also analyzed to identify potential impacts due to the weekly cycle of human activities. Most of the selected parameters presented a significant increase starting from Tuesday to Friday and then they generally decreased during the weekends due to the relevant reduction of the human activities. The selection of different types of monitoring sites (urban, suburban, and rural) and temporal scales (seasonal and weekly) has been proved for a proper characterization of the aerosol absorption properties at the monitored area due to its geographical location at the center of the Mediterranean area.

Variability in molecular composition and optical absorption of atmospheric brown carbon aerosols in two contrasting urban areas of China

Atmospheric brown carbon (BrC) aerosols were investigated at two urban sites in southern (Hefei) and northern (Shijiazhuang) China during summer and winter of 2019–2020 to explore regional variability in their compositional and optical properties. Organic matter in ambient PM2.5 samples were characterized at molecular level using ultrahigh performance liquid chromatography coupled with a diode array detector and an Orbitrap mass spectrometer. Although the molecular composition of organic aerosols varied substantially over different ambient environments, they were mainly composed by CHO and CHON species in positive ionization mode while CHO and CHOS species in negative mode. The mass absorption coefficients of BrC aerosols at wavelength range 250–450 nm were relatively higher for winter samples in both cities and for Shijiazhuang samples in both seasons, partly attributed to the higher concentration levels of anthropogenic air pollutants in these environments. The absorption Ångström exponents further revealed that BrC aerosols in winter seasons and in Shijiazhuang had a greater capacity of absorption at shorter wavelengths. A total of 26 BrC species with strong absorption were unambiguously identified from different environments, which mainly consisted of CHO, CHON, and CHN species and had higher degrees of unsaturation and lower degrees of oxidation. The presence and abundance of these BrC species varied dynamically across the seasons and cities, with a greater number of species presented in the winter of Shijiazhuang. The BrC species together contributed 12–26 % in the total absorbance of light-absorbing organic components at 250–450 nm. This study highlights the regional differences in BrC properties influenced by the sources and atmospheric processes, which should be taken into account to assess their climate impacts.

Optical properties and simple forcing efficiency of the organic aerosols and black carbon emitted by residential wood burning in rural central Europe

Abstract. Recent years have seen an increase in the use of wood for energy production of over 30 %, and this trend is expected to continue due to the current energy crisis and geopolitical instability. At present, residential wood burning (RWB) is one of the most important sources of organic aerosols (OAs) and black carbon (BC), posing a significant risk to air quality and health. Simultaneously, as a substantial aerosol source, RWB also holds relevance in the context of aerosol radiative effects and climate. While BC is recognized for its large light absorption cross-section, the role of OAs in light absorption is still under evaluation due to their heterogeneous composition and source-dependent optical properties. Existing studies that characterize wood-burning aerosol emissions in Europe primarily concentrate on urban and background sites and focus on BC properties. Despite the significant RWB emissions in rural areas, these locations have received comparatively less attention. The present scenario underscores the imperative for an improved understanding of RWB pollution, aerosol optical properties, and their subsequent connection to climate impacts, particularly in rural areas. We have characterized atmospheric aerosol particles from a central European rural site during wintertime in the village of Retje in Loški Potok, Slovenia, from 1 December 2017 to 7 March 2018. The village experienced extremely high aerosol concentrations produced by RWB and near-ground temperature inversion. The isolated location of the site and the substantial local emissions made it an ideal laboratory-like place for characterizing RWB aerosols with low influence from non-RWB sources under ambient conditions. The mean mass concentrations of OA and BC were 35 µg m−3 (max⁡=270 µg m−3) and 3.1 µg m−3 (max⁡=24 µg m−3), respectively. The mean total particle number concentration (10–600 nm) was 9.9×103 particles cm−3 (max⁡=59×103 particles cm−3). The mean total light absorption coefficients at 370 and 880 nm measured by an AE33 Aethalometer were 120 and 22 Mm−1 and had maximum values of 1100 and 180 Mm−1, respectively. The aerosol concentrations and absorption coefficients measured during the campaign in Loški Potok were significantly larger than reported values for several urban areas in the region with larger populations and a larger extent of aerosol sources. Here, considerable contributions from brown carbon (BrC) to the total light absorption were identified, reaching up to 60 % and 48 % in the near-UV (370 nm) and blue (470 nm) wavelengths. These contributions are up to 3 times higher than values reported for other sites impacted by wood-burning emissions. The calculated mass absorption cross-section and the absorption Ångström exponent for RWB OA were MACOA,370nm=2.4 m2 g−1, and AAEBrC,370-590nm=3.9, respectively. Simple-forcing-efficiency (SFE) calculations were performed as a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the climate impact of the RWB aerosols produced at the study site by integrating the optical properties measured during the campaign. The SFE results show a considerable forcing capacity from the local RWB aerosols, with a high sensitivity to OA absorption properties and a more substantial impact over bright surfaces like snow, typical during the coldest season with higher OA emissions from RWB. Our study's results are highly significant regarding air pollution, optical properties, and climate impact. The findings suggest that there may be an underestimation of RWB emissions in rural Europe and that further investigation is necessary.

Contribution of black carbon and desert dust to aerosol absorption in the atmosphere of the Eastern Arabian Peninsula

Discriminating the absorption coefficients of aerosol mineral dust and black carbon (BC) in different aerosol size fractions is a challenge because of BC's large mass absorption cross-section compared to dust. Ambient aerosol wavelength dependent absorption coefficients (babs) in supermicron and submicron size fractions were determined with a high time resolution. The measurements were performed simultaneously using identical systems at an urban and a regional background site in Qatar. At each site, measurements were taken by co-located Aethalometers, one with a virtual impactor (VI) and the other with a PM1 cyclone to respectively collect super-micron-enhanced and submicron fractions. The combined measurement of aerosol absorption and scattering coefficients enabled the particles to be classified based on their optical properties' wavelength dependence. The classification reveals the presence of BC internally/externally mixed with different aerosols. Helium ion microscopy images provided information concerning the extent of mineral dust in the submicron fraction. The determination of absorption coefficients during dust storms and non-dust periods was used to establish the absorption Ångström exponent for dust and BC. Non-parametric wind regression, potential source contribution function and back-trajectory analysis reveal major regional sources of desert dust associated with north-westerly winds and a minor local dust contribution. In contrast, major BC sources found locally were associated with south-westerly winds with a smaller contribution made by offshore emissions transported by north-easterly and easterly winds. The use of a pair of Aethalometers with VI and PM1 inlets separates contributions of BC and dust to the aerosol absorption coefficient.

Comparative Analysis of Aerosol Vertical Characteristics over the North China Plain Based on Multi-Source Observation Data

In this paper, multi-source observation, such as aircraft, ground-based remote sensing, and satellite-retrieved data, has been utilized to compare and analyze the vertical characteristics of aerosol optical properties and the planetary boundary layer height (HPBL) over the North China Plain (NCP) region during May–June 2016. Aircraft observations show the vertical profiles of aerosol absorption coefficients (σabs), scattering coefficients (σsca), and extinction coefficients (σext) gradually decrease with altitude, with their maximum values near HPBL. The vertical profiles of σext depended most on the vertical distribution of measured σsca, indicating a significant contribution of scattering aerosols. In addition, the prominent characteristic of the inverse relationship between σext and moisture profile could serve as a reference for predicting air quality in the NCP region. The lower layer pollution during the field experiment was likely caused by the accumulation of fine-mode aerosols, characterized by the vertical distribution of the Ångström exponent and the Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) products. Typically, HPBL derived from aircraft and surface Micro Pulse Lidar (MPL) was approximate, while the predicted HPBL by meteorological data indicates an underestimation of ~192 m. Aerosol optical depth (AOD) calculated from aircraft and ground-based remote sensing (such as MPL and AERONET) experienced a strong correlation, and both of them exhibited a similar tendency. However, the AOD retrieved from satellites was significantly larger than that from aircraft and ground-based remote sensing. Overall, the inversion algorithm, cloud identification algorithm, representativeness of the space, and time of the observation may lead to an overestimation or underestimation of AOD under certain circumstances. This study may serve as a re-evaluation of AOD retrieved from multi-source observations and provide a reference to uncover the actual atmospheric environment in the NCP regions.

Atmospheric aerosol optical properties and trends over Antarctica using in-situ measurements and MERRA-2 aerosol products

Columnar aerosol loading and surface level atmospheric black carbon (BC) concentration over the Antarctic are examined using the measurements carried out at the Indian Antarctic stations, Bharati and Maitri, as part of the 36th Indian Scientific Expedition (2016–17) to Antarctica (ISEA). The mean aerosol optical depth (AOD) at wavelength 500 nm at Bharati is observed to be 0.101 ± 0.01, whereas that at Maitri is 0.047 ± 0.003. Columnar aerosol loading at Bharati is found to be more than two times that measured at Maitri. The daily mean surface level atmospheric BC concentration at Bharati in the Austral summer from December 2016 to February 2017 is 24 ± 16.5 ngm−3. Comparison of this measurement with earlier reported values over the same region indicates an increase in surface-level atmospheric BC concentration. Long-term (1997–2017) trend analysis carried out using MERRA-2 aerosol reanalysis data also corroborates the increasing trend in AOD and BC concentration with 0.005 (0.007) yr−1 and 0.3 (0.27) ngm−3 yr−1 over Bharati (Maitri) respectively. Spectral variations of aerosol absorption coefficients show absorption angstrom exponent values (AAE) close to unity (1.096 ± 0.029), which indicates that fossil fuel emission is the primary source of absorbing aerosols over this region. During the study period, air mass back trajectory analysis indicates that the sources are from the Antarctic, coastal, and southern ocean regions with no long-range transport from other continents in the southern hemisphere.

Measurement report: Rapid decline of aerosol absorption coefficient and aerosol optical property effects on radiative forcing in an urban area of Beijing from 2018 to 2021

Abstract. Reliable observations of aerosol optical properties are crucial for quantifying the radiative forcing of climate. The simultaneous measurements of aerosol optical properties at three wavelengths for PM1 and PM10 were conducted in urban Beijing from March 2018 to February 2022. The aerosol absorption coefficient (σab) at 550 nm of PM10 and PM1 decreased by 55.0 % and 53.5 % from 2018 to 2021. The significant reduction in σab may be related to reduced primary emissions caused by effective air pollution control measures. PM2.5 mass concentration decreased by 34.4 % from 2018 to 2021. Single scattering albedo (SSA) increased from 0.89±0.04 for PM10 (0.87±0.05 for PM1) in 2018 to 0.93±0.03 for PM10 (0.91±0.04 for PM1) in 2021. Increasing SSA and decreasing PM2.5 mass concentration suggest that the fraction of absorbing aerosols decreased with improved air quality due to pollution control measures being taken. The annual average submicron absorption ratio (Rab) increased from 86.1 % in 2018 to 89.2 % in 2021, suggesting that fine particles are the main contributors to total PM10 absorption and that the contribution of fine particles to absorption became more important. The absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) in winter decreased from 2018 to 2021, implying a decreasing contribution from brown carbon to light absorption, which may relate to the reduced emissions of biomass burning and coal combustion. During the study period, aerosol radiative forcing efficiency became more negative, mainly influenced by increasing SSA and was −27.0 and −26.2 W m−2 per aerosol optical depth (AOD) for PM10 and PM1 in 2021. Higher σab and PM2.5 mass concentrations were primarily distributed in clusters 4 and 5, transported from the south and the west of Beijing each year. σab and PM2.5 corresponding to clusters 4 and 5 decreased evidently from 2018 to 2021, which may result from the control of source emissions in surrounding regions of Beijing. The 4-year data presented in this study provide critical optical parameters for radiative forcing assessment within two size ranges and are helpful for evaluating the effectiveness of clean air action.

INCREASING THE INSULATION PROPERTIES OF FILTER RESPIRATORS TO PROTECT MINERS’ RESPIRATORY ORGANS FROM DUST

To increase the insulating properties of elastomeric half-masks, it is suggested to perforate the obturator in the area of the nasal bridge, chin and cheeks, which allows for adjustment in its size, thus preventing the occurrence of wrinkles on the user’s face in the areas which are the individual features of a particular user’s face. Three versions of the perforated filter respirator obturator have been proposed: in the first, the holes are made along the entire perimeter of the obturator; in the second, the holes are only in the area of the cheeks and nasal bridge; in the third, incisions with a diameter of 5 mm are made in the area of the nasal bridge and cheeks. The result of modelling a set of alternative solutions taking into account the coefficient of protection of filter respirator half-masks, the distribution of compressive forces, which are determined in the environment of the packages “ANSYS” and “Solid works”, has been obtained on the basis of main indicators of the proposed models. To make a decision on choosing the best model, the mass of the elastomeric half mask, its dimensions and the complexity of the design were additionally considered. On the basis of expert evaluation, according to the described procedure for determining the utility function of the factors from their values, it has been defined that the second model of the half-mask is characterized by the best parameters. Conducted laboratory studies to determine the aerosol absorption coefficient by the obturation line showed the lowest indicator in the second option.

Highly Acidic Conditions Drastically Alter the Chemical Composition and Absorption Coefficient of α-Pinene Secondary Organic Aerosol.

Secondary organic aerosols (SOA), formed through the gas-phase oxidation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), can reside in the atmosphere for many days. The formation of SOA takes place rapidly within hours after VOC emissions, but SOA can undergo much slower physical and chemical processes throughout their lifetime in the atmosphere. The acidity of atmospheric aerosols spans a wide range, with the most acidic particles having negative pH values, which can promote acid-catalyzed reactions. The goal of this work is to elucidate poorly understood mechanisms and rates of acid-catalyzed aging of mixtures of representative SOA compounds. SOA were generated by the ozonolysis of α-pinene in a continuous flow reactor and then collected using a foil substrate. SOA samples were extracted and aged by exposure to varying concentrations of aqueous H2SO4 for 1-2 days. Chemical analysis of fresh and aged samples was conducted using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with photodiode array spectrophotomety and high-resolution mass spectrometry. In addition, UV-vis spectrophotometry and fluorescence spectrophotometry were used to examine the changes in optical properties before and after aging. We observed that SOA that aged in moderately acidic conditions (pH from 0 to 4) experienced small changes in composition, while SOA that aged in a highly acidic environment (pH from -1 to 0) experienced more dramatic changes in composition, including the formation of compounds containing sulfur. Additionally, at highly acidic conditions, light-absorbing and fluorescent compounds appeared, but their identities could not be ascertained due to their small relative abundance. This study shows that acidity is a major driver of SOA aging, resulting in a large change in the chemical composition and optical properties of aerosols in regions where high concentrations of H2SO4 persist, such as upper troposphere and lower stratosphere.

A dual-wavelength photothermal aerosol absorption monitor: design, calibration and performance

Abstract. There exists a lack of aerosol absorption measurement techniques with low uncertainties and without artefacts. We have developed the two-wavelength Photothermal Aerosol Absorption Monitor (PTAAM-2λ), which measures the aerosol absorption coefficient at 532 and 1064 nm. Here we describe its design, calibration and mode of operation and evaluate its applicability, limits and uncertainties. The 532 nm channel was calibrated with ∼ 1 µmol mol−1 NO2, whereas the 1064 nm channel was calibrated using measured size distribution spectra of nigrosin particles and a Mie calculation. Since the aerosolized nigrosin used for calibration was dry, we determined the imaginary part of the refractive index of nigrosin from the absorbance measurements on solid thin film samples. The obtained refractive index differed considerably from the one determined using aqueous nigrosin solution. PTAAM-2λ has no scattering artefact and features very low uncertainties: 4 % and 6 % for the absorption coefficient at 532 and 1064 nm, respectively, and 9 % for the absorption Ångström exponent. The artefact-free nature of the measurement method allowed us to investigate the artefacts of filter photometers. Both the Aethalometer AE33 and CLAP suffer from cross-sensitivity to scattering – this scattering artefact is most pronounced for particles smaller than 70 nm. We observed a strong dependence of the filter multiple scattering parameter on the particle size in the 100–500 nm range. The results from the winter ambient campaign in Ljubljana showed similar multiple scattering parameter values for ambient aerosols and laboratory experiments. The spectral dependence of this parameter resulted in AE33 reporting the absorption Ångström exponent for different soot samples with values biased 0.23–0.35 higher than the PTAAM-2λ measurement. Photothermal interferometry is a promising method for reference aerosol absorption measurements.

Seasonal variations of mass absorption efficiency of elemental carbon in PM2.5 in urban Guangzhou of South China

This study investigates seasonal variations of mass absorption efficiency of elemental carbon (MAEEC) and possible influencing factors in urban Guangzhou of South China. Mass concentrations of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) in PM2.5 and aerosol absorption coefficient (bap) at multi-wavelengths were simultaneously measured in four seasons of 2018–2019 at hourly resolution by a semi-continuous carbon analyzer and an aethalometer. Seasonal average mass concentrations of EC were in the range of 1.36–1.70 µgC/m3 with a lower value in summer than in the other seasons, while those of OC were in the range of 4.70–6.49 µgC/m3 with the lowest value in summer and the highest in autumn. Vehicle exhaust from local traffic was identified to be the predominant source of carbonaceous aerosols. The average aerosol absorption Ångström exponents (AAE) were lower than 1.2 in four seasons, indicating EC and bap were closely related with vehicle exhaust. Seasonal MAEEC at 550 nm was 11.0, 8.5, 10.4 and 11.3 m2/g in spring, summer, autumn, and winter, respectively. High MAEEC was related with the high mass ratio of non-carbonaceous aerosols to EC and high ambient relative humidity.

Nitrogen-Containing Compounds Enhance Light Absorption of Aromatic-Derived Brown Carbon.

The formation of secondary brown carbon (BrC) is chemically complex, leading to an unclear relationship between its molecular composition and optical properties. Here, we present an in-depth investigation of molecular-specific optical properties and aging of secondary BrC produced from the photooxidation of ethylbenzene at varied NOx levels for the first time. Due to the pronounced formation of unsaturated products, the mass absorption coefficient (MAC) of ethylbenzene secondary organic aerosols (ESOA) at 365 nm was higher than that of biogenic SOA by a factor of 10. A high NOx level ([ethylbenzene]0/[NOx]0 < 10 ppbC ppb-1) was found to significantly increase the average MAC300-700nm of ESOA by 0.29 m2 g-1. The data from two complementary high-resolution mass spectrometers and quantum chemical calculations suggested that nitrogen-containing compounds were largely responsible for the enhanced light absorption of high-NOx ESOA, and multifunctional nitroaromatic compounds (such as C8H9NO3 and C8H9NO4) were identified as important BrC chromophores. High-NOx ESOA underwent photobleaching upon direct exposure to ultraviolet light. Photolysis did not lead to the significant decomposition of C8H9NO3 and C8H9NO4, indicating that nitroaromatic compounds may serve as relatively stable nitrogen reservoirs and would effectively absorb solar radiation during the daytime.

Synchronous detection of multiple optical characteristics of atmospheric aerosol by coupled photoacoustic cavity

Owing to the influence of sampling loss, cavity difference and detecting source, the multi-optical parameter measurement of atmospheric aerosol cannot be detected simultaneously in the same reference environment. In order to solve this problem, a new method of simultaneously detecting the aerosol optical parameters by coupling cavity ring-down spectrometer with photoacoustic spectroscopy is proposed. Firstly, the coupled photoacoustic cavity is formed by the organic fusion of the photoacoustic cavity and the ring-down cavity. Secondly, the integrated design of the coupling spectroscopy system is carried out. Finally, the extinction coefficient and absorption coefficient of aerosol are measured simultaneously by the system, and then the aerosol scattering coefficient and single albedo are calculated indirectly. The accuracy of the system is verified by comparing with the data from the environmental quality monitoring station, which provides a new idea for the detection of multi-optical characteristics of atmospheric aerosol.

Regional Differences in the Light Absorption Properties of Fine Particulate Matter Over the Tibetan Plateau: Insights From HR‐ToF‐AMS and Aethalometer Measurements

AbstractThe Tibetan Plateau (TP) has received wide scientific concern in recent decades owing to its important impacts on regional climatic and cryospheric changes, hydrological cycles, and environments. However, our understanding of the spatial distribution of the chemical and optical properties of aerosols is still limited based on prior single‐site observations. In this study, aerosol light absorptions from black carbon (BC) and brown carbon (BrC) were explored and compared among three remote TP sites, including Qomolangma Station (QOMS) on the southern TP, Nam Co Station (NamCo) on the central TP, and Waliguan Observatory on the northeastern TP. Although the aerosol mass concentration at QOMS was less than half of that at Waliguan, the light absorption coefficient of aerosols at QOMS was nearly 5 times higher than that at Waliguan, mainly as a result of more light‐absorbing carbonaceous aerosols on the southern TP due to long‐range transported biomass burning emissions. Specifically, BC dominated aerosol light absorption at all wavelengths, whereas BrC contributed ∼30% of the light absorption at 370 nm at QOMS and ∼20% at Waliguan and NamCo. A major contributor to BrC light absorption at QOMS was biomass burning‐related organic aerosols apportioned from aerosol mass spectrometry measurements. Understanding the significant regional differences in aerosol light absorption properties on the TP is useful for evaluating the regional climatic and environmental effects and validating the model results on aerosol radiative forcing.

Aerosol Light Absorption at 1064 nm: Pollution Sources, Meteorological Parameters and Gas Pollutants in Qingdao Coastal Area, China

A two-month sampling campaign was carried out from 1 November to 30 December 2019, to investigate the light absorption of aerosols at coastal sites in Qingdao. The average values and standard deviations of the absorption coefficient (OAC) at λ = 1064 nm during the measurement period were 18.52 ± 13.31 Mm−1. Combined with the backward trajectory model, the aerosol absorption coefficient and gas pollution concentration of six possible air mass trajectories were obtained and calculated. The maximum absorption coefficient of local air masses was approximately 20.4 Mm−1 and anthropogenic pollution originated from mainly local sources in the Jiaozhou area. In our measurements at this site, the results also showed that there was a positive correlation between relative humidity (RH) and aerosol absorption. Without considering other factors, the size of aerosol particles grew with the increasing of RH, which changed the nonlinear relationship between the size and the absorption cross section of aerosol particles subsequently. In addition, the correlations between gas pollutants and OAC were calculated. The atmospheric environment is complex in sea–land intersection areas, especially in coastal cities. Analysis of various aerosol sources, meteorological conditions, and gas precursors enhances the study of aerosol optical absorption.

Estimates of mass absorption cross sections of black carbon for filter-based absorption photometers in the Arctic

Abstract. Long-term measurements of atmospheric mass concentrations of black carbon (BC) are needed to investigate changes in its emission, transport, and deposition. However, depending on instrumentation, parameters related to BC such as aerosol absorption coefficient (babs) have been measured instead. Most ground-based measurements of babs in the Arctic have been made by filter-based absorption photometers, including particle soot absorption photometers (PSAPs), continuous light absorption photometers (CLAPs), Aethalometers, and multi-angle absorption photometers (MAAPs). The measured babs can be converted to mass concentrations of BC (MBC) by assuming the value of the mass absorption cross section (MAC; MBC= babs/ MAC). However, the accuracy of conversion of babs to MBC has not been adequately assessed. Here, we introduce a systematic method for deriving MAC values from babs measured by these instruments and independently measured MBC. In this method, MBC was measured with a filter-based absorption photometer with a heated inlet (COSMOS). COSMOS-derived MBC (MBC (COSMOS)) is traceable to a rigorously calibrated single particle soot photometer (SP2), and the absolute accuracy of MBC (COSMOS) has been demonstrated previously to be about 15 % in Asia and the Arctic. The necessary conditions for application of this method are a high correlation of the measured babs with independently measured MBC and long-term stability of the regression slope, which is denoted as MACcor (MAC derived from the correlation). In general, babs–MBC (COSMOS) correlations were high (r2= 0.76–0.95 for hourly data) at Alert in Canada, Ny-Ålesund in Svalbard, Barrow (NOAA Barrow Observatory) in Alaska, Pallastunturi in Finland, and Fukue in Japan and stable for up to 10 years. We successfully estimated MACcor values (10.8–15.1 m2 g−1 at a wavelength of 550 nm for hourly data) for these instruments, and these MACcor values can be used to obtain error-constrained estimates of MBC from babs measured at these sites even in the past, when COSMOS measurements were not made. Because the absolute values of MBC at these Arctic sites estimated by this method are consistent with each other, they are applicable to the study of spatial and temporal variation in MBC in the Arctic and to evaluation of the performance of numerical model calculations.
