Procesos urbanos recientes en el Área Metropolitana de Concepción: transformaciones morfológicas y tipologías de ocupación

To understand the recent processes of metropolitan occupation, a methodology based on visual interpretation of aerial and satellite images and census data has been developed. This methodology has been applied on the Metropolitan Area of Concepcion (MAC), for the census years 1992 and 2002. This analysis provides maps and statistical tables that allow synthesizing relevant aspects of the growth processes of urban areas from a morphological perspective; as well as the types of occupation of urban land and the impact these have on the variation of urban population density on a metropolitan and municipal scale. The results show that during the study period, the MAC had a significant urban growth, mainly resulting from the consumption of industrial and residential land, condition that, at the same time, produced a negative impact on the urban population density

Cosmogenic radionuclide dating indicates ice-sheet configuration during MIS 2 on Nordaustlandet, Svalbard

ISSN 0300-9483.0300-9843 Glacial geological field surveys, aerial image interpretation and cosmogenic radionuclide (CRN) dating allowed us to reconstruct the ice-sheet configuration on Nordaustlandet, the northernmost island of the European sector on the margin of the Arctic Ocean. The timing of deglaciation was investigated by determining the 26Al and 10Be ages of glacially scoured bedrock, weathered periglacial blockfields and glacial erratic boulders. Only 10Be ages were useful for our interpretations, because of unresolved analytical problems with 26Al. Fjords and lowlands on Nordaustlandet yielded Late Weichselian 10Be ages, indicating that actively erosive ice streams scoured the coastal fjord bathymetry during marine isotope stage (MIS) 2. In Murchisonfjorden, ground-truthed air-photograph interpretation and 10Be ages of boulders indicated a cold-based glacier ice cover during MIS 2 on higher plateaus. 10Be ages and lithological studies of erratic boulders on higher and interior plateaus of Prins Oscars Land (>200–230 m a.s.l.) suggest that the Mid-Weichselian glaciation (MIS 4) might have been more extensive than that during MIS 2.

Comparison of Grid-Based and Segment-Based Estimation of Forest Attributes Using Airborne Laser Scanning and Digital Aerial Imagery

Forest management planning in Finland is currently adopting a new-generation forest inventory method, which is based on interpretation of airborne laser scanning data and digital aerial images. The inventory method is based on a systematic grid, where the grid elements serve as inventory units, for which the laser and aerial image data are extracted and the forest variables estimated. As an alternative or a complement to the grid elements, image segments can be used as inventory units. The image segments are particularly useful as the basis for generation of the silvicultural treatment and cutting units since their boundaries should follow the actual stand borders, whereas when using grid elements it is typical that some of them cover parts of several forest stands. The proportion of the so-called mixed cells depends on the size of the grid elements and the average size and shape of the stands. In this study, we carried out automatic segmentation of two study areas on the basis of laser and aerial image data with a view to delineating micro-stands that are homogeneous in relation to their forest attributes. Further, we extracted laser and aerial image features for both systematic grid elements and segments. For both units, the feature set used for estimating the forest attributes was selected by means of a genetic algorithm. Of the features selected, the majority (61–79%) were based on the airborne laser scanning data. Despite the theoretical advantages of the image segments, the laser and aerial features extracted from grid elements seem to work better than features extracted from image segments in estimation of forest attributes. We conclude that estimation should be carried out at grid level with an area-specific combination of features and estimates for image segments to be derived on the basis of the grid-level estimates.

Man-made Object Detection Based on Texture Clustering and Geometric Structure Feature Extracting

Automatic aerial image interpretation is one of new rising high-tech application fields, and it’s proverbially applied in the military domain. Based on human visual attention mechanism and texture visual perception, this paper proposes a new approach for man-made object detection and marking by extracting texture and geometry structure features. After clustering the texture feature to realize effective image segmentation, geometry structure feature is obtained to achieve final detection and marking. Thus a man-made object detection methodology is designed, by which typical man-made objects in complex natural background, including airplanes, tanks and vehicles can be detected. The experiments sustain that the proposed method is effective and rational.

One-Class Support Vector Machines for Aerial Images Segmentation

Interpretation of aerial images is an important task in various applications. Image segmentation can be viewed as the essential step for extracting information from aerial images. Among many developed segmentation methods, the technique of clustering has been extensively investigated and used. However, determining the number of clusters in an image is inherently a difficult problem, especially when a priori information on the aerial image is unavailable. This study proposes a support vector machine approach for clustering aerial images. Three cluster validity indices, distance-based index, Davies-Bouldin index, and Xie-Beni index, are utilized as quantitative measures of the quality of clustering results. Comparisons on the effectiveness of these indices and various parameters settings on the proposed methods are conducted. Experimental results are provided to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. An integrated methodology for estimation of forest fire-loss using geospatial information

These days, wildfires are prevalent in almost all areas of the world. Researchers have been actively analyzing wildfire damage using a variety of satellite images and geospatial datasets. This paper presents a method for detailed estimation of wildfire losses using various geospatial datasets and an actual case of wildfire at Kang-Won-Do, Republic of Korea in 2005. A set of infrared (IR) aerial images acquired after the wildfire were used to visually delineate the damaged regions, and information on forest type, diameter class, age class, and canopy density within the damaged regions was retrieved from GIS layers of the Korean national forest inventory. Approximate tree heights were computed from airborne LIDAR and verified by ground LIDAR datasets. The corresponding stand volumes were computed using tree volume equations (TVE). The proposed algorithm can efficiently estimate fire loss using the geospatial information; in the present case, the total fire loss was estimated as $5.9 million, which is a more accurate estimate than $4.5 million based on conventional approach. The proposed method can be claimed as a powerful alternative for estimating damage caused by wildfires, because the aerial image interpretation can delineate and analyze damaged regions in a comprehensive and consistent manner; moreover, LIDAR datasets and national forest inventory data can significantly reduce field work.

Utilization of digital photogrammetry in forestry mapping

At present, photogrammetric interpretation of aerial images is a dominant method of forestry mapping. In the last years, transition from analogue to digital photogrammetry has been distinct. Digital photogrammetry enables to achieve workflow effectivity, and so to decrease the final product costs. The objective of the submitted paper was to evaluate the availability of digital photogrammetry for the forestry mapping rationalization. Digital aerotriangulation using the ImageStation SSK system brings more accurate results without requirements for the use of a larger amount of control points. The results also demonstrated the use of colour infrared aerial images, and also black and white aerial images at the scale 1:15,000 for the orthoimage creation in the forestry mapping department. Compared with the black and white aerial images, the colour infrared images have an essentially more interesting content, mainly from the qualitative aspect, which shifts them to use in many forestry disciplines (mostly for determination of the health conditions of forests stands, …), in combination with the remote sensing of the Earth and GIS (Geographic Information Systems).

Volcanic Landscapes of Patagonia: A Geomorphological Map of the Piedra del Águila Volcanic Plateau, Province of Neuquén, Argentina

The map of the Piedra del Águila Volcanic Plateau or “Escorial” (Province of Neuquén, Northern Patagonia, Argentina) shows the geomorphological characteristics of one of the most important volcanic extrusions of extra-Andean Patagonia. This map has been prepared based upon the visual interpretation of vertical aerial photographs and Landsat TM images. In the study area landforms of volcanic origin as well as of aeolian, uvial and mass movement processes have been recognized. Due to the significant role of these volcanic plateaus as site of ground water reservoirs, the map also records the grassy wetlands or “mallines”, which are present around the edge of the remnants of the former lava ows.

A spectral attentional mechanism tuned to object configurations

This paper describes an attentional mechanism based on the interpretation of spectral signatures for detecting regular object configurations in areas of an image delineated using context information. The proposed global operator relies on the spectral analysis of edge structure and exploits spatial as well as frequency-domain constraints derived from known geometrical models of monitored objects. A decision theoretic method for learning acceptance detection regions is presented. Applications of this attentional mechanism are demonstrated for several aerial image interpretation tasks for attentional as well as recognition purposes. Specific examples are described for detecting vehicle formations (such as convoys), qualifying the geometry of detected formations, or monitoring the occupancy of regions of interest (such as parking areas, roads, or open areas). Experiments and sensitivity analysis results are reported.

AN ABDUCTIVE REASONING BASED IMAGE INTERPRETATION SYSTEM

This paper describes an abductive reasoning based inferencing engine for image interpretation. The inferencing strategy finds an acceptable and consistent explanation of the features detected in the image in terms of the objects known a priori. The inferencing scheme assumes representation of the domain knowledge about the objects in terms of local and/or relational features. The inferencing system can be applied for different types of image interpretation problems like 2-D and 3-D object recognition, aerial image interpretation, etc. In this paper, we illustrate functioning of the system with the help of a 2-D object recognition problem.

A hand-held data logger with integral GPS for producing weed maps by field walking

Abstract The Silsoe Patch Spraying System is dependent for its operation on the availability of a field map of weed patch distribution. The strategy for building weed maps is to use a number of different techniques at various times through the season. Techniques may include aerial image interpretation, near-ground image capture and analysis and manual surveying. An important source of knowledge is the farmer who has a qualitative mental record of weed distribution in the field and who regularly walks his fields, thus gaining more knowledge. A compact hand-held data logger, based on a palm-top PC linked to a differential Global Positioning System (GPS) system in a backpack, has been developed to aid the farmer during field walking. It can record weed information and position, which is displayed on a screen map for later updating of a ‘master’ field weed map held on the farm PC. The software has been written to provide a good user interface, data checking of all user input and compatibility with the mapping system used to drive the Patch Spraying System.

Parallel search for the interpretation of aerial images

In this paper, we present a parallel search scheme for model-based interpretation of aerial images, following a focus-of-attention paradigm. Interpretation is performed using the gray level image of an aerial scene and its segmentation into connected components of almost constant gray level. Candidate objects are generated from the window as connected combinations of its components. Each candidate is matched against the model by checking if the model constraints are satisfied by the parameters computed from the region. The problem of candidate generation and matching is posed as searching in the space of combinations of connected components in the image, with finding an (optimally) successful region as the goal. Our implementation exploits parallelism at multiple levels by parallelizing the management of the open list and other control tasks as well as the task of model matching. We discuss and present the implementation of the interpretation system on a Connection Machine CM-2. The implementation reported a successful match in a few hundred milliseconds whenever they existed.

Automating knowledge acquisition for aerial image interpretation

The interpretation of aerial imagery requires substantial knowledge about the scene under consideration. Knowledge about the type of scene-airport, suburban housing development, urban city-aids in low-level and intermediate level image analysis and will drive high-level interpretation by constraining search for plausible consistent scene models. Collecting and representing large knowledge bases requires specialized tools. In this paper we describe the organization of a set of tools for interactive knowledge acquisition of scene primitives and spatial constraints for interpretation of aerial imagery. These tools include a user interface for interactive knowledge acquisition, an automated knowledge compiler that transforms schemabased assertions into productions that are directly executable by our interpretation system, and a performance analysis tool that generates a critique of the final interpretation. The generality of these tools is demonstrated by the generation of rules for a new task, suburban house scenes, and the analysis of a set of imagery by our interpretation system.

Variations of existing glaciers in the Southwestern mountain region of Xizang (Tibet)

The SW-mountain region of Xizang in this paper is taken to extend between 27° 10′ – 30° 10′N / 84° 50′–91° 30′ E, that is the vast area stretching from the Himalayas to the South Range of Xizang. The author has been in the area many times over 20 years surveying and conducting scientific investigations. In 1984 the author took part in the Sino-German Joint Expedition for further survey and the interpretation of aerial photographs and satellite images of the same area. The paper presents the data collected during this period.

A Knowledge-Based System for the Analysis of Aerial Images

A knowledge-based system for the automatic interpretation of aerial images of suburban scenes is described. Design considerations, the system architecture, and the procedure of obtaining a symbolic description of a picture is explained. Emphasis is put on knowledge representation and control strategy, as well as processing methods. Results are demonstrated via a sequence of pictures.
