Drivers of the mean biases of the tropical atmospheric circulation in a moist static energy framework

AbstractIn this study, we apply the moist static energy for first baroclinic mode (MSEB) model to examine the drivers of the mean tropical atmospheric circulation biases over oceanic regions. The model diagnoses the vertical motion in an air column of the tropical regions based on net energy heat flux and advection of moisture or heat into the air column in relation to the stability of the air column due to the gradients in moist static energy. Analysis of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP) and Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) simulations helped to identified errors intrinsic to the atmospheric models or errors due to atmosphere–ocean coupling process. Despite some limitations of the MSEB model, our multi-model mean analysis over the entire tropical ocean reveals that the primary drivers of the tropical circulation biases mostly result from intrinsic atmospheric model errors in top of the atmosphere longwave radiation and surface latent heats fluxes, suggesting a link to biases in the hydrological cycle. Oceanic coupling significantly enhanced some of the biases. Biases in the advection of moist static energy also play an important role, while biases in the gross moist stability profiles play only a minor role. Further, we examine the inter-model variations in four main regional large-scale biases (double-ITCZ, Pacific cold tongue, southward shift of ITCZ over the Atlantic, and dipole bias over the Indian Ocean). The analysis suggests that regional bias patterns across general circulation models are primarily driven by coupling errors, except for the bias in the Indian Ocean, which is intrinsic to the atmospheric model but amplified by coupling. Notably, longwave radiation biases at the top of the atmosphere are prevalent among the four bias patterns, as well as biases in moisture advection over the Atlantic. Our results underscore the significant role of net longwave radiation at the top of the atmosphere, an aspect not sufficiently emphasized in previous studies.

Moist processes in NCUM global forecasts during the boreal summer monsoon

The objective of this study is to evaluate the performance of the National Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting Unified model (NCUM) global version in representing the moist processes during active and break monsoon periods over the Indian region. We employed the moist static energy (MSE) equation, a process-oriented diagnostic (POD), to examine the relationship between small-scale convection and large-scale circulation patterns in the forecast for eight monsoon seasons spanning from June to September 2015 to 2022. Results are validated by utilizing the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting Reanalysis (ERA5) data products. By employing PODs, we aimed to identify the influence of various MSE terms on rainfall evolution, particularly over the Central Indian (CI) region. We also investigated the systematic errors in certain processes that contribute to rainfall biases. Additionally, the study explored the moisture-convection relationship and compared the sensitivity of free tropospheric moisture to deep convection in the NCUM forecasts against the reanalysis data. The findings indicate weaknesses in the model's sensitivity to moisture and its ability to represent the rainfall-column water vapor (CWV) relationship highlighting areas where further improvements may be necessary to enhance the model's performance in monsoon forecasting. Despite the presence of systematic biases in the model's mean state of rainfall, such as dry biases over the Bay of Bengal and wet biases over the eastern Indian Ocean (EIO), the results obtained from the MSE diagnostics aligned with the existing understanding of monsoon dynamics. Specifically, the study emphasized the significance of horizontal advection of MSE as a leading term preceding the peak active/break conditions over the CI region. Hence, these findings not only showcase the usefulness of PODs in examining the strengths and weaknesses of numerical weather prediction (NWP) models but also serve as a verification tool for assessing model skills, leading to improved understanding and development of NWP models.

Australian Summer Monsoon Bursts: A Moist Static Energy Budget Perspective

AbstractThe Australian monsoon's wet season is associated with sequences of wet and dry conditions known as bursts and breaks, which usually have timescales of a week or two. There are several hypotheses for the physical processes involved in monsoon bursts, ranging from the effects of the Madden‐Julian Oscillation to extratropical influences. We analyze rainfall bursts in Northern Australia using a moist static energy (MSE) budget framework. We separate the bursts into three types and further separate them into pre‐monsoon, active monsoon, and post‐monsoon. We then apply ERA5 data to calculate the MSE budget for each burst and construct composite bursts for each of the three types. We find that the horizontal advection of MSE over the tropical northern Australian convergence zone is the most critical term in the budget for the day‐to‐day precipitation variation. MSE‐related gross moist stability analysis reveals that each type has distinct characteristics. The burst type associated with active monsoon bursts displays convective growth and decay patterns both before and after the precipitation peak, which is typical of oceanic convection. A low‐rainfall burst type, which is often seen before monsoon onset, is linked to coastal convection and has minimal rainfall decay after the burst. Finally, a sustained high‐rainfall burst type, mostly observed at the end or after the monsoon retreat, has growth characteristics similar to the typical monsoon burst but does not decay, maintaining very high rainfall for at least a week due to a rearrangement of the circulation and local thermodynamic structure of the atmosphere.

Diagnosis of Warm-Sector Heavy Rainfall with Warm Shear in the Yangtze–Huaihe Coastal Areas from the Perspective of Moist Static Energy

Based on the Climate Precipitation Center Morphing (CMORPH) precipitation data and the fifth-generation ECMWF reanalysis (ERA5) data, moist static energy (MSE) diagnosis for 14 cases of southerly warm-sector heavy rainfall with warm shear (WSWR) along the Yangtze-Huaihe coastal area (YHCA) was conducted. The results indicate that the vertically integrated MSE tendency peaks before the precipitation reaches its maximum. This suggests a rapid MSE accumulation leading up to precipitation onset, with moist enthalpy advection dominantly influencing this increase. The vertical advection of MSE is negative, suggesting that upward motions and rainfall play a crucial role in consuming MSE. Vertical integrated MSE budget analysis for the nine cases of nocturnal rain shows that moist enthalpy advection was the primary contributor, driven mainly by meridional latent energy advection. Scale analysis shows that the combination of meridional disturbance wind and the mean specific humidity field results in pronounced meridional latent energy advection. For the five cases of non-nocturnal rain, the net energy flux was dominant before the onset of precipitation, primarily driven by clear-sky net shortwave radiation (SWCS). The meridional internal energy advection also makes a substantial contribution. The scale analysis indicates that the combined effects of the meridional disturbance wind and the average temperature field lead to significant meridional internal energy advection.

Moist Thermodynamics of Convectively Coupled Waves over the Western Hemisphere

Abstract Convectively coupled waves (CCWs) over the Western Hemisphere are classified based on their governing thermodynamics. It is found that only the tropical depressions (TDs; TD waves) satisfy the criteria necessary to be considered a moisture mode, as in the Rossby-like wave found in an earlier study. In this wave, water vapor fluctuations play a much greater role in the thermodynamics than temperature fluctuations. Only in the eastward-propagating inertio-gravity (EIG) wave does temperature govern the thermodynamics. Temperature and moisture play comparable roles in all the other waves, including the Madden–Julian oscillation over the Western Hemisphere (MJO-W). The moist static energy (MSE) budget of CCWs is investigated by analyzing ERA5 data and data from the 2014/15 observations and modeling of the Green Ocean Amazon (GoAmazon 2014/15) field campaign. Results reveal that vertical advection of MSE acts as a primary driver of the propagation of column MSE in westward inertio-gravity (WIG) wave, Kelvin wave, and MJO-W, while horizontal advection plays a central role in the mixed Rossby gravity (MRG) and TD wave. Results also suggest that cloud radiative heating and the horizontal MSE advection govern the maintenance of most of the CCWs. Major disagreements are found between ERA5 and GoAmazon. In GoAmazon, convection is more tightly coupled to variations in column MSE, and vertical MSE advection plays a more prominent role in the MSE tendency. These results along with substantial budget residuals found in ERA5 data suggest that CCWs over the tropical Western Hemisphere are not represented adequately in the reanalysis. Significance Statement In comparison to other regions of the globe, the weather systems that affect precipitation in the tropical Western Hemisphere have received little attention. In this study, we investigate the structure, propagation, and thermodynamics of convectively coupled waves that impact precipitation in this region. We found that slowly evolving tropical systems are “moisture modes,” i.e., moving regions of high humidity and precipitation that are maintained by interactions between clouds and radiation. The faster waves are systems that exhibit relatively larger fluctuations in temperature. Vertical motions are more important for the movement of rainfall in these waves. Last, we found that reanalysis and observations disagree over the importance of different processes in the waves that occurred over the Amazon region, hinting at potential deficiencies on how the reanalysis represents clouds in this region.

Modulation of Asymmetric Inner‐Core Convection on Midlevel Ventilation Leading up to the Rapid Intensification of Typhoon Lekima (2019)

AbstractThis study investigates how the asymmetric inner‐core convection can modulate midlevel ventilation preceding rapid intensification (RI) of sheared tropical cyclones (TC) based on two numerical experiments of Typhoon Lekima (2019) with warm (CTL) and relatively cool (SSTA0) sea surface temperatures (SSTs). The midlevel ventilation is dominated by an inflow layer between heights of 5 and 10 km in the upshear‐left quadrant, while the convective development in the upshear‐left quadrant acts to induce asymmetric midlevel outflow. These outflows, together with the reduced tilt, lessen the strength of midlevel inflow in a quadrant‐mean sense. Due to a slower boundary‐layer recovery of low‐entropy air over cooler SST, convective development in the upshear‐left quadrant in SSTA0 is suppressed, causing stronger midlevel inflows than that in CTL. A backward trajectory analysis initialized near the RI onset of CTL shows that the TC in CTL is less susceptible to the intrusion of midlevel dry air from left‐of‐shear and upshear‐left quadrant due to the weaker upshear‐left midlevel inflow. Moreover, the intruding air parcels in SSTA0 tend to originate farther away from TC center and lower the eyewall equivalent potential temperature more effectively. A column‐integrated moist static energy (MSE) budget reveals a dramatic increase in MSE in inner‐core region associated with the positive changes of horizontal MSE advection radially outward of enhanced convective rainbands preceding RI onset in CTL. In contrast, the MSE increases more slowly in SSTA0 due to the weaker upshear convection, inducing a less favorable thermodynamic conditions that is potentially responsible for a delayed RI onset.

Intermodel Spread in Walker Circulation Responses Linked to Spread in Moist Stability and Radiation Responses

AbstractThe response of the Pacific Walker circulation (WC) to long‐term warming remains uncertain. Here, we diagnose contributions to the WC response in comprehensive and idealized general circulation model (GCM) simulations. We find that the spread in WC response is substantial across both the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6) and the Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) models, implicating differences in atmospheric models in the spread in projected WC strength. Using a moist static energy (MSE) budget, we evaluate the contributions to changes in the WC strength related to changes in gross moist stability (GMS), horizontal MSE advection, radiation, and surface fluxes. We find that the multimodel mean WC weakening is mostly related to changes in GMS and radiation. Furthermore, the spread in WC response is related to the spread in GMS and radiation responses. The GMS response is potentially sensitive to parameterized convective entrainment which can affect lapse rates and the depth of convection. We thus investigate the role of entrainment in setting the GMS response by varying the entrainment rate in an idealized GCM. The idealized GCM is run with a simplified Betts‐Miller convection scheme, modified to represent entrainment. The weakening of the WC with warming in the idealized GCM is dampened when higher entrainment rates are used. However, the spread in GMS responses due to differing entrainment rates is much smaller than the spread in GMS responses across CMIP6 models. Therefore, further work is needed to understand the large spread in GMS responses across CMIP6 and AMIP models.

Excitation of the Madden‐Julian Oscillation in Response to Transient Ocean Warming in SPCAM

AbstractRecent studies have suggested that the Madden‐Julian oscillation (MJO) could be generated as part of atmospheric adjustment to localized equatorial heating in models properly resolving moist convection. Here we use the Super‐parameterized Community Atmosphere Model (SPCAM) to study atmospheric response to transient sea surface warming in the equatorial Indian Ocean, which leads to the excitation of an MJO event, robust across different experiments, in addition to the expected equatorial Rossby and Kelvin waves. A moist static energy (MSE) budget analysis suggests that longwave and surface turbulent latent heat flux anomalies are predominantly responsible for the MJO excitation; however, these terms oppose its eastward propagation. In contrast, advection of MSE generally weakens the MJO amplitude, but contributes to its eastward propagation. These results highlight the role of the MJO in the moist atmospheric adjustment to localized tropical heating, with implications for the MJO mechanisms and prediction.

Forecasts of MJO during DYNAMO in a Coupled Tropical Channel Model: Impact of Planetary Boundary Layer Schemes

It is challenging to predict the eastward-propagating Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) events across the Maritime Continent (MC) in models. We constructed an air–sea coupled numerical weather prediction model—a tropical channel model—to investigate the role of the planetary boundary layer (PBL) scheme on eastward-propagating and non-propagating MJO precipitation events during the Dynamics of the MJO (DYNAMO) campaign period. Analysis of three hindcast experiments with different PBL schemes illustrates that the PBL scheme is crucial to simulating the eastward-propagating MJO events. The experiment with the University of Washington (UW) PBL scheme can predict the convection activity over the MC due to a good representation of moist static energy (MSE) tendency relatively well. The horizontal advection and the upward transport of moisture from the PBL to the free atmosphere play a major role in the MSE tendency ahead of MJO convection. The difference in the meridional component of MSE advection accounts for the different MSE budgets in the three hindcast experiments. A well-simulated meridional advection can transport the meridional water vapor to moisten the MC. Our results suggest that a proper PBL scheme with better simulated meridional water vapor distribution is crucial to predicting the eastward propagation of MJO events across the MC in the tropical channel model.

Moist Static Potential Vorticity Budget in Tropical Motion Systems

Abstract Analyses of simple models of moist tropical motion systems reveal that the column-mean moist static potential vorticity (MSPV) can explain their propagation and growth. The MSPV is akin to the equivalent PV except it uses moist static energy (MSE) instead of the equivalent potential temperature. Examination of an MSPV budget that is scaled for moist off-equatorial synoptic-scale systems reveals that α, the ratio between the vertical gradients of latent and dry static energies, describes the relative contribution of dry and moist advective processes to the evolution of MSPV. Horizontal advection of the moist component of MSPV, a process akin to horizontal MSE advection, governs the evolution of synoptic-scale systems in regions of high humidity. On the other hand, horizontal advection of dry PV predominates in a dry atmosphere. Derivation of a “moist static” wave activity density budget reveals that α also describes the relative importance of moist and dry processes to wave activity amplification and decay. Linear regression analysis of the MSPV budget in eastern Pacific easterly waves shows that the MSPV anomalies originate over the eastern Caribbean and propagate westward due to dry PV advection. They are amplified by the fluxes of the moist component of MSPV over the Caribbean Sea and over the eastern Pacific from 105° to 130°W, underscoring the importance of moist processes in these waves. On the other hand, dry PV convergence amplifies the waves from 90° to 100°W, likely as a result of the barotropic energy conversions that occur in this region.

Evaluation of the Madden–Julian oscillation in HiRAM

The aim of this study was to understand the cause of Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) bias in the High Resolution Atmospheric Model (HiRAM) driven by observed SST through process-oriented diagnosis. Wavenumber-frequency power spectrum and composite analyses indicate that HiRAM underestimates the spectral amplitude over the MJO band and mainly produces non-propagating rather than eastward-propagating intraseasonal rainfall anomalies, as observed. Column-integrated moist static energy (MSE) budget analysis is conducted to understand the MJO propagation bias in the simulation. It is found that the bias is due to the lack of a zonally asymmetric distribution of the MSE tendency anomaly in respect to the MJO convective center, which is mainly attributable to the bias in vertical MSE advection and surface turbulent flux. The Process of High-Frequency Intraseasonal Oscillation Associated with a Persistent Rainfall Event over South China

AbstractIn the present study, the moist static energy (MSE) budget associated with a persistent rainfall event that occurred over South China in late August 2018 (PR1808) was analyzed using ERA-Interim data. The results revealed that the PR1808 event was closely related to a 12–30-day intraseasonal oscillation (ISO), with a significant westward-propagating mode. The recharge of MSE occurred before ISO deep convection, and the MSE was discharged during and after the peak precipitation. This result indicates that the recharge–discharge cycle of MSE played an important role in regulating the high-frequency ISO (HF-ISO) process during the PR1808 event. However, the midlevel MSE tendency, rather than the low-level tendency, controlled the column-integrated MSE change in this case, and there was no low-level MSE tendency ahead of HF-ISO convection, which is different from previous studies, implying that shallow convection was not a key factor in this case. The recharge of MSE related to the midlevel MSE change mode was mainly attributed to zonal advection, while the forcing related to radiative heating (longwave and shortwave radiation) and heat fluxes (latent and sensible heat fluxes) contributed little to the change in MSE. Furthermore, for the zonal advection of MSE, the main contribution originated from the advection by the low-frequency zonal flow across the low-frequency MSE gradient, and interactions between high- (low-) frequency zonal flow and low- (high-) frequency MSE. In addition, the disturbances from higher latitudes enhanced the persistent rainfall in this case over South China through the southward shift of baroclinic vorticity.

Seasonality in Prediction Skill of the Madden‐Julian Oscillation and Associated Dynamics in Version 2 of NASA's GEOS‐S2S Forecast System

AbstractThe prediction skill of the Madden‐Julian Oscillation (MJO) in Version 2 of NASA's Global Earth Observing System Subseasonal to Seasonal (GEOS‐S2S) forecast system is investigated for winter and summer focusing on moistening‐related processes crucial for eastward propagating MJO activity. It is found that the annual bivariate correlation of the Real‐time Multivariate MJO time series between prediction and observation is ∼0.70, ∼0.57, and ∼0.50 at 20‐, 25‐, and 30‐day forecast leads. Correlation at long‐leads (>30 days) is noticeably higher for boreal summer initial conditions (June‐September [JJAS]), with correlations remaining above 0.5 at 35–40 days leads. Correlations are lower for boreal winter initial conditions from January through March (JFM), dropping to ∼0.5 at 25‐day lead, still comparable to the skills in the other reliable S2S forecast systems.The predicted eastward MJO propagation across the Indo‐western Pacific sector is well captured in JJAS, but is slower than observed in JFM. Investigations of the moisture field and advection and moisture sink, moist static energy (MSE) budget, and tropical circulation/pressure responses to the MJO convective heating reveal that, in JFM, those responses and moistening processes, especially the vertical MSE advection, are underestimated over and to the east of the Maritime Continent when the MJO anomaly approaches from the west. In contrast, those processes are well represented in JJAS, although moistening is overestimated due to large surface evaporation. This study suggests that improvement of the moistening tendency over that region in the boreal winter could contribute to further increases in MJO prediction skill of the GEOS‐S2S system.

Effects of MJO Vertically Tilted Structure on Its Phase Speed from the Moisture Mode Theory Perspective

AbstractThe effect of vertically tilted structure (VTS) of the MJO on its phase propagation speed was investigated through the diagnosis of ERA-Interim reanalysis data during 1979–2012. A total of 84 eastward propagating MJO events were selected. It was found that all MJO events averaged throughout their life cycles exhibited a clear VTS, and the tilting strength was significantly positively correlated to the phase speed. The physical mechanism through which the VTS influenced the phase speed was investigated. On the one hand, a stronger VTS led to a stronger vertical overturning circulation and a stronger descent in the front, which caused a greater positive moist static energy (MSE) tendency in situ through enhanced vertical MSE advection. The stronger MSE tendency gradient led to a faster eastward phase speed. On the other hand, the enhanced overturning circulation in front of MJO convection led to a stronger easterly/low pressure anomaly at the top of the boundary layer, which induced a stronger boundary layer convergence and stronger ascent in the lower troposphere. This strengthened the boundary layer moisture asymmetry and favored a faster eastward propagation speed.

The influence of surface heat fluxes on the growth of idealized monsoon

AbstractThis study explores the effect of surface sensible and latent heat fluxes on monsoon depressions using a series of idealized convection-permitting simulations. Each experiment is initialized with a small amplitude wave that is allowed to grow within an environment representative of the South Asian monsoon. Comparing experiments with and without interactive surface heat fluxes, it is found that these fluxes enhance the growth of the simulated vortices. Without interactive surface fluxes, the strengthening period is short and the vortices fail to reach intensities characteristic of stronger monsoon depressions. Using a large set of experiments in which the vertical and meridional shear are systematically varied, it is found that surface heat fluxes enhance intensity the most when the upper-level shear is weak, the lower-level shear and associated moist static energy (MSE) gradient are sufficiently steep, and the lower-level meridional shear is strong. These experiments reveal two different regimes of convection-coupled monsoon depression growth: one in which convection is driven by MSE advection and one in which it is driven by surface heat fluxes and quasi-geostrophic forcing for ascent. Both regimes require sufficiently strong meridional shear to achieve initial growth by barotropic instability.

Impact of the observed SST frequency in the model initialization on the BSISO prediction

The impact of the observed sea surface temperature (SST) frequency in the model initialization on the prediction of the boreal summer intraseasonal oscillation (BSISO) over the Western North Pacific (WNP) is investigated using the Beijing Climate Center Climate System Model. Three sets of hindcast experiments initialized by the observed monthly, weekly and daily SST data (referred to as the Exp_MSST, Exp_WSST and Exp_DSST, respectively) are conducted with 3-month integration starting from the 1st, 11th, and 21st day of each month in June–August during 2000–2014, respectively. The results show that the useful prediction skill of BSISO index reaches out to about 10 days in the Exp_MSST, and further increases by 1–2 days in the Exp_WSST and Exp_DSST. The skill differences among various hindcast experiments are especially apparent during the forecast time of 6–20 days. Focusing on the strong BSISO cases in this period, the BSISO activity and its related moist static energy (MSE) characteristics over the WNP are further diagnosed. It is found that from the Exp_MSST to the Exp_WSST and Exp_DSST, the enhanced BSISO prediction skill is associated with the more realistic variations of intraseasonal MSE and its tendency. Among the various budget terms that dominate the MSE tendency, the surface latent heat flux and MSE advection are evidently improved, with reduction of mean biases by more than 21% and 10%, respectively. Therefore, the better reproduced MSE variation may contribute to the more skillful BSISO forecast through improving the surface evaporation as well as atmospheric convergence and divergence that related to the BSISO activity. Our findings suggest the necessity of increasing the observed SST frequency (i.e., from monthly to weekly or daily) in the initialization process of coupled models to enhance the actual BSISO predictability, since some current subseasonal forecast operations and researches still use relatively low-frequency SST observations for the model initialization.

Intercomparison of MJO Column Moist Static Energy and Water Vapor Budget among Six Modern Reanalysis Products

AbstractThis study conducts an intercomparison of the column-integrated moist static energy (MSE) and water vapor budget of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) among six modern global reanalysis products (RAs). Inter-RA differences in the mean MSE, MJO MSE anomalies, individual MSE budget terms, and their relative contributions to the propagation and maintenance of MJO MSE anomalies are examined. Also investigated is the relationship between the MJO column water vapor (CWV) budget residuals with the other CWV budget terms as well as with the two parameters that characterize cloud–radiation feedback and moisture–convection coupling. Results show a noticeable inter-RA spread in the mean-state MSE, especially its vertical structure. In all RAs, horizontal MSE advection dominates the propagation of the MJO MSE while column-integrated longwave radiative heating and vertical MSE advection are found to be the key processes for MJO maintenance. The MSE budget terms directly affected by the model parameterization schemes exhibit high uncertainty. The differences in anomalous vertical velocity mainly contribute to the large differences in vertical MSE advection among the RAs. The budget residuals show large inter-RA differences and have nonnegligible contributions to MJO maintenance and propagation in most RAs. RAs that underestimate (overestimate) the strength of cloud–radiation feedback and the convective moisture adjustment time scale tend to have positive (negative) MJO CWV budget residual, indicating the critical role of these processes in the maintenance of MJO CWV anomalies. Our results emphasize that a correct representation of the interactions among moisture, convection, cloud, and radiation is the key for an accurate depiction of the MJO MSE and CWV budget in RAs.

Evolution of Idealized Vortices in Monsoon-Like Shears: Application to Monsoon Depressions

AbstractThis study examines processes fundamental to the development of South Asian monsoon depressions using an array of integrations of an idealized convection-permitting numerical model. In each integration, a wave of initially small amplitude is subjected to a different amount of vertical and meridional wind shear, with temperature and moisture fields constructed according to realistic constraints. Based on the evolution of this disturbance into monsoon depression–like vortices, two features of the background environment emerge as important: the low-level gradient of moist static energy (MSE) and the low-level meridional shear. As the low-level MSE gradient steepens, the disturbance becomes stronger and produces more rain. This strengthening results from the interaction of the vortex with latent heat release by convection that is in turn organized by positive MSE advection in the northerly flow west of the vortex. In this region of advection, moister air from the north ascends along upward-sloping isentropes, driving moist convection. The disturbance also becomes stronger with increasing meridional shear, which makes the environment more barotropically unstable. The absence of either of these two features of the background environment prevents substantial growth of the disturbance. Our results suggest that monsoon depression growth in South Asia is fostered by the coexistence of a strong low-level MSE gradient with strong meridional wind shear associated with the monsoon trough.

Transient Aggregation of Convection: Observed Behavior and Underlying Processes

AbstractConvective self-aggregation is among the most striking features emerging from radiative–convective equilibrium simulations, but its relevance to convective disturbances observed in the real atmosphere remains under debate. This work seeks the observational signals of convective aggregation intrinsic to the life cycle of cloud clusters. To this end, composite time series of the Simple Convective Aggregation Index (SCAI), a metric of aggregation, and other variables from satellite measurements are constructed around the temporal maxima of precipitation. All the parameters analyzed are large-scale means over 10° × 10° domains. The composite evolution for heavy precipitation regimes shows that cloud clusters are gathered into fewer members during a period of ±12 h as precipitation picks up. The high-cloud cover per cluster expands as the number of clusters drops, suggesting a transient occurrence of convective aggregation. The sign of the transient aggregation is less evident or entirely absent in light precipitation regimes. An energy budget analysis is performed in search of the physical processes underlying the transient aggregation. The column moist static energy (MSE) accumulates before the precipitation peak and dissipates after, accounted for primarily by the horizontal MSE advection. The domain-averaged column radiative cooling is greater in a more aggregated composite than in a less aggregated one, although the role of radiative–convective feedback behind this remains unclear.

Influence of Walker circulations on East African rainfall

Walker circulations near East Africa are identified and their influence on the interannual variability of East African rainfall is explored in multiple reanalyses and observational precipitation datasets. The robustness of methodology for identifying 2-dimensional overturning circulations in a three-dimensional flow is investigated. Three Walker circulations with potential relevance to East African rainfall are identified, namely, the East African, the Congo Basin, and the Indian Ocean Walker circulations. Consistent anti-correlations across the reanalyses exist for the upward and downward branches of the Indian Ocean Walker Circulation during September–March, with strongest connections during October–December; they do not emerge for the other two Walker circulations. Less (more) precipitation occurs over East Africa in the short-rains season when the Indian Ocean Walker Circulation is anomalously strong (weak). These rainfall variations are associated with anomalous mid-level moisture divergence that primarily results from variations in wind divergence rather than atmospheric moisture. The anomalous horizontal advection of moist static energy can be important in modulating convection, but this argument is not conclusive considering the unclosed budget and the variations within the composites. The associations above do not indicate causality. Caution is advisable when using the concept of Walker circulations because a two-dimensional stream function can over-simplify the complexity of the three-dimensional circulation.
