High-support Mould Construction and Risk Assessment in Civil Engineering Works

With the rapid development of the construction industry, advanced construction technology and new building materials continue to emerge. High-supporting mould technology, with the advantages of large bearing capacity, convenient erection and strong applicability, has been widely used in the field of construction engineering. However, due to the high height, large span, many rods, complex and variable force and other characteristics of the highly supported mould frame, there is a risk of tilting or collapsing in the process of building construction, which has a very high risk. This paper from the high supporting mould technology, frame erection technology key points, safety monitoring and evaluation of the detailed description, and targeted to put forward the corresponding reasonable suggestions, in order to be able to protect the smooth progress of construction.

Behavior of 3D-printed HPC plates with FRP grid reinforcement under bending

High-performance concrete (HPC) has become increasing popular in structural engineering. Capitalizing the advanced construction technology of 3D concrete printing (3DCP) and merits of HPC, structures with various profiles could be designed and constructed easily. As the mechanical properties of 3D printed concrete may be worse than the corresponding concrete cast by the conventional technology, this study proposes to evolve flexible fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) grid as reinforcement for 3D printed HPC plates. Twelve plates were tested to explore the effects of the loading direction and fabrication type on the flexural behavior of FRP grid reinforced HPC plates. The results showed that the performance of the 3D printed HPC plates can be considerably enhanced owning to the FRP grid reinforcement. Additionally, the μCT-scanned images show that the pores between deposition layers were elongated due to the movement of the nozzle during printing, and the pores were stretched in the printing direction. The flexible FRP reinforcement may allow 3D printing of FRP reinforced concrete elements in the future.

An integrated method of topological optimization and path design for 3D concrete printing

As an advanced construction technology, 3D concrete printing (3DCP) has the advantage of high manufacturing freedom for various freeform structures. The digital design of 3D printing using topology optimization contributes to obtaining the maximum performance potential from manufactured structures. However, most digitally designed structures obtained by topology optimization cannot be directly manufactured using 3DCP owing to various manufacturing constraints that have not yet been considered in the design process. This paper presents an integrated design method for 3DCP by incorporating extrusion-based manufacturing characteristics into the topology optimization algorithm. Topological optimization is based on the solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP) method owing to its ease of adaptation to multiple constraints. During the optimization iteration, the manufacturing characteristics of nozzle size and path continuity are considered as the design requirements of 3D printed structures to achieve high-quality manufacturing by using intermittent interruption of topology optimization to modify the design variables. Meanwhile, the anisotropic behaviors of material constraints and the volume and Tsai-Wu criterion of design constraints are introduced to obtain the desired mechanical performance with lightweight designs. Moreover, the number of closed regions and overhang angle controls are incorporated to ensure the global path continuity and stable stacking of optimized 3D structures. A concrete arch structure is 3D printed to validate the proposed integrated method, and the removal of breakpoints and short paths and complete filling rate are demonstrated. The integrated method facilitates the engineering application of 3DCP in a high-efficiency and high-quality manner.

Construction Technology of Tower Erection with Mobile Crane Adopting the Relaying Auxiliary Device

The use of cranes to complete the tower assembly in the plain and hilly areas has been widely used in the construction of the tower assembly. But its construction safety hazards are obvious. Tower erection by using crane based on docking device is an advanced construction technology in the field of power grid construction at home and abroad. It has the advantages of high construction efficiency and good safety. This construction technology has certain requirements on construction technology, supporting docking auxiliary devices, and crane operator skills. In this paper, the design and feasibility of the docking device and construction technology are discussed in combination with the tower erection construction of Qinglong-Liangzhuang 220kV line project. Successful application through engineering shows: The docking device is safe and reliable, and the construction process is reasonable and feasible. This experience provided reference for the erection of other types of transmission towers using crane based on docking device in power grid construction.

Preface

It is a great privilege for us to present the proceedings of ICECon2021, The International Conference on Civil Engineering and Construction Technology 2021 held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, from the 14th to 15th of December 2021. The Civil Engineering in Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Malaysia Sabah, organized this Conference; collaborated with the Institution of Engineers (IEM) Sabah, The Association of Consulting Engineers (ACEM) Sabah Chapter, and Green Materials and Advanced Construction Technology Research Unit (GMACT), Universiti Malaysia Sabah.With the theme “Emerging Technology and Sustainable Construction”, ICECon2021 has brought together experts from the industry and academia to disseminate new knowledge, share best practices, expand professional networks, and provide invaluable input for enriching civil engineering and construction technology for the benefit of humankind. Although at times of travel restriction due to the Covid-19 pandemic, over thirty-eight (38) distinguished researchers from three countries (Malaysia, China, and Australia) had virtually gathered and presented papers for this Conference. Two keynote speakers highlighted Renewable Energy and Sustainable Engineering. Their presentations provided a good insight into the latest developments in Green Liquid Biofuels and the Environmental Behaviour of Nanoparticles. Because of the enthusiastic response from the engineering community, the sizeable number of papers prompted the committee to organize parallel sessions during the Conference.Efforts taken by the peer reviewers contributed to improving the quality of papers provided constructive critics comments; thus, improvements and amendments by authors are greatly appreciated. The success of the ICECon2021 Conference was indeed a collective effort by the international/national advisory committee, session chairs, student volunteers and university financial and administrative staff assistance.The Civil Engineering Programme and Green Materials and Construction Technology (GMACT), Universiti Malaysia Sabah, has selflessly contributed to hosting the Conference in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Influence of Prominent Temperature on the Compressive Strength of Self Compacting Concrete

In an extensive research scenario, the self-compacting concrete influence a major role in the advanced construction technology which gives the higher impact on its strength and durability of the structure, for its assessment there were various types of physical and chemical testing techniques are available. In this article the work represents the compressive strength of self-compacting concrete in various temperature testing like 200o C and 400 o C with the consideration of 100% cement and different mix proportion of admixtures for the replaceable of cement like Fly-ash with 30% and 15% and GGBFS 30% and 15% and the addition of polypropylene fibre with 1% and 2% with all of its mix proportion. The fundamental tests of the concrete are performed as per the Indian Standard code. The results indicate that an enhancement of compressive strength at the maximum optimized temperature.

Utilization of Building Information Modeling for Arranging the Structural Kingposts

The kingpost was a vertical element that was used to support the structural strut in the deep excavation. The structural kingpost was commonly arranged by experienced engineers who used two-dimensional construction drawings. Thus, it was still time-consuming and error-prone. Currently, an available construction program has been developed to arrange the structural kingpost by identifying the clash problems in the 3D environment. However, they have a limitation for detecting the clash that was unable to visualize the concurrent clashes between kingpost and many underground structures. Then, the engineer cannot see all the clash incidents with each kingpost and move the kingpost to avoid the clashes successfully. Since the kingpost arrangement was still an inefficient practice that was limited in the visualization aspect, this research used engineering knowledge and advanced construction technology to detect and solve the clashes between kingposts and underground structures. The methodology used engineering knowledge of kingpost arrangement to develop the system modules by using a rule-based approach. Then, these modules were developed into the system by using visual programming of Building Information Modelling (BIM). To test the system, an underground structure from building construction was selected as a case study to apply the developed system. Finally, the finding of this study could overcome human judgment by providing less interaction in the kingpost arrangement and visualization improvement of clash occurrences in the 3D model.

Soil Remediation and Construction Technology of Prefabricated Building Sleeve Grouting in Eco-city

The construction technology of prefabricated structure sleeve grouting is an advanced construction technology focusing on energy conservation and environmental protection, it can reduce the waste of resources and environmental pollution at the same time,and it also can greatly improve the quality and efficiency of construction by running a variety of construction procedures simultaneously.The author analyzes the sleeve grouting construction of the assembled structure, and puts forward some key technologies of grouting construction and control methods of heavy and difficult points in grouting construction, in order to provide reference for the majority of engineering construction personnel.

Critical considerations on tower crane layout planning for high-rise modular integrated construction

PurposeModular integrated construction (MiC) is the most advanced off-site construction technology. However, the application of MiC for high-rise buildings is still limited and challenging. One critical issue is tower crane layout planning (TCLP) to guarantee safe and efficient multiple crane-lifts for module installation, which, however, has been insufficiently explored. For filling this knowledge gap, this paper aims to systematically explore the critical considerations on TCLP for high-rise MiC to support contractors in determining the optimal crane layout plan.Design/methodology/approachThis study employed a multimethod strategy. First, previous studies on TCLP and critical features of MiC were reviewed to develop a conceptual model of TCLP considerations. Second, expert interviews with 15 construction planners were conducted to identify the critical TCLP considerations for high-rise MiC. Third, a multicase study with three high-rise MiC projects was undertaken to demonstrate and verify the identified considerations.FindingsThe paper characterises critical considerations on TCLP as performance criteria and influencing factors and identifies 7 critical performance criteria and 25 influencing factors for high-rise MiC. Specifically, the features of MiC (e.g. various modularised layout design, heavyweight and large size of modules) were found to significantly affect the crane layout performance (i.e. technical feasibility, safety and economic efficiency).Originality/valueThe paper is the first-of-its-kind study on crane layout planning for high-rise modular buildings, which contributes a two-stage multicriteria decision-making framework integrated with systematic TCLP considerations. The findings should help contractors determine safe and efficient tower crane layout plans for high-rise MiC projects.

Emerging Technologies for Resilient Infrastructure: Conspectus and Roadmap

Emerging technologies (ETs) are increasingly becoming more accessible, and as they make their way into the field will be an integral part of the engineering community’s work that impacts future civil infrastructure. In the meantime, infrastructure resilience has become a recurring theme in government and industry discussions. ETs are expected to contribute to improving infrastructure resilience capacities, namely, absorptive, adaptive, and restorative. Through an extensive literature review, an in-depth conspectus of the state of the art of ETs in civil engineering is provided, leading to a vision for how these technologies impact infrastructure resilience. Three distinct disruptive technologies that can impact infrastructure resilience are demonstrated—specifically, smart materials, advanced construction technology, and advanced sensing technology. Such ETs will remarkably affect the well-known four characteristic elements of infrastructure resilience: redundancy, robustness, rapidity, and resourcefulness. These innovative technologies will warrant infrastructure to withstand or efficiently recover from multihazard disruptive events, leading to improved resilience. A roadmap to field implementation is presented considering the financial cycles necessary for ETs to make an impact on infrastructure resilience.

Information asymmetries between vendors and customers in the advanced construction technology diffusion process

PurposeAdvanced construction technologies (ACTs) are transforming infrastructure projects, yet there has been little research into and theorization of the process by which these innovations are diffused. The purpose of this paper is to address this paucity of research by exploring the problems of information asymmetries between vendors and customers in the ACT diffusion process. Specifically, the paper explores whether information asymmetries exist between vendors and customers in the ACT diffusion process and what forms they take.Design/methodology/approachA structured survey of 153 vendors and customers of advanced construction technologies was undertaken across three international ACT exhibitions in Australia.FindingsBy comparing the perspectives of both customers and vendors across 15 technology diffusion process variables using importance-performance analysis and principal component analysis, significant differences are found between vendors’ and customers’ perceptions of how effectively information flows in the ACT diffusion process. The results show that vendors are significantly more optimistic than customers about information asymmetries on a wide range of diffusion variables. They also highlight significant potential for information asymmetries to occur which can undermine the advanced technology diffusion process.Originality/valueThe results provide important new conceptual and practical insights into an under-researched area, which is of increasing importance to a major industry, which is being transformed by advanced technological developments.

The Impact of Advanced Construction Technology on Refugee Shelters . (Dept. A)

Many refugees are forced into light camps that make them vulnerable to physical and emotional dangers, and thus suffer a complete break in the social, economic and material aspects of life. The emergency camps are planned, randomly designed and intended only to provide protection from natural elements (floods - earthquakes ...) and industrial elements (wars .) which are usually built in large open areas made of simple tent structures, always temporary housing ( The camp) does not include living and sleeping spaces, as well as areas for food preparation, personal hygiene and privacy, but rather one space. Therefore, the research paper aims to monitor the evolution of building technology variables for light installations at the global level, with the aim of reaching their economic potential for application and exploitation in our society. In order to benefit from these developments in making refugee camps quickly and with high accuracy and environmentally friendly materials, and to identify the efficiency of assistive technologies for the work of light installations, especially for refugee camps, quickly and accurately, and their ability to deal with a complex creative process. The paper will deal with assessing the efficiency of advanced technologies compared to the traditional shelters commonly used in refugee camps, by developing technologies to create a (camp) model that helps in studying the cost, technical specifications, life span and delivery time for an advanced shelter. After comparison, it was found that the advanced shelter achieved lower construction cost, higher durability, and could be implemented in less time than traditional shelters

Computational morphogenesis of free‐form grid structures with Voronoi diagram

AbstractFree‐form grid structures have developed increasingly with the development of computer‐aided design and advanced construction technology. However, the grid generation is still a difficulty for designing free‐form grid structures. The computational morphogenesis of free‐form grid structures with the Voronoi diagram is proposed to solve this difficulty. Voronoi diagram is introduced to form the irregular grid of structures. Morphologies of plane and curved surface Voronoi grid structure are formulated to realize parametric modeling of the structural grid. A comprehensive structural index is proposed for evaluating free‐form grid structures quantitatively from the aspects of both architectural and structural behaviors. Taking the seeds as optimization variables and the comprehensive structural index as optimization objective, the grid generation problem is transformed into an optimization problem. Numerical examples show that the proposed morphogenesis is feasible and effective for the grid generation of free‐form structures. The free‐form grid structures generated by the proposed method have not only appealing geometry but also good mechanical behavior. The consideration of the symmetry can accelerate the grid generation process. Different grid distributions can be realized with different supports.

Management and Construction Strategy of Water Supply and Drainage Engineering

For the water supply and drainage project, it is not only beneficial to the country and the people, but also an important industry in China’s economic structure. Therefore, it is necessary to effectively manage the water supply and drainage project and actively apply advanced construction technology to ensure that its construction quality meets the corresponding requirements and standard specifications. This article summarizes the construction management of water supply and drainage projects, analyzes the water supply and drainage construction techniques, and proposes corresponding construction management strategies.

Framework for an IoT-based shop floor material management system for panelized homebuilding

Panelized construction, an emerging offsite construction method, is garnering increasing attention globally particularly for wood-frame wall panels as an advanced construction technology. Although utilizing this advanced construction method can greatly improve the working environment and productivity, the conventional mentality in construction, which historically overlooks the value of an automated management system to support off-site prefabrication and on-site installation, hinders its application. This research introduces an Internet of things (IoT)-based shop floor material management system that can capture dynamic data in real-time and effectively synthesize it along the supply chain. With the assistance of a feature-based modelling method, real-time information can be merged into an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system rather than manually inputting data. Through the research presented in this article, IoT-based shop floor material management is shown to be highly effective in addressing dynamic changes in a cost-effective manner. Standard Reference Materials for Cement Paste: Part II-Determination of Mixing Ratios.

A variety of special concrete structures have been designed for domestic and overseas construction markets that require highly advanced construction technology. Therefore, it is necessary to secure quantitative construction technology and develop a standard reference material (hereinafter: SRM) with consistent flow performance and quality in order to evaluate the quantitative performance of flowability. On the other hand, the flowability of concrete is influenced greatly by the flowability of the cement paste. In addition, considering the design strength and workability, the mix design was carried out at various mixing ratios, according to the purpose of the site. Therefore, based on the derived components of standard reference materials for cement paste, this paper proposes a mixing ratio for standard reference materials that can uniformly simulate the flow characteristics of cement paste, according to the water–cement ratio (W/C). The results show that yield stress was determined by the ratio of water and glycerol while plastic viscosity was controlled by the limestone content. Finally, the mixing ratio of standard reference materials that can simulate the rheological properties of cement paste by W/C was suggested.

Influence of metal oxide (V2O5) in recycled waste materials for advanced durable construction technology

For replacement of Portland cement as well as advancement of concrete technology, the low calcium based fly ash with alkali activators plays a significant role as cementitious material in current scenario. As efficacy of fly ash requires very high temperature (≥1400 °C) activation, alternative approach of fly-ash with addition of 5% vanadium pentoxide (V2O5) has been established for mullitization process at lower temperature (≤1000 °C) in this present exertion. The sintered fly ash has been used along with alkali activator for developing the construction composite at ambient temperature. Strength measurement, Ultrasonic pulse velocity, Chloride ion permeability, water absorption and sulphate resistant tests reveal that the V2O5 assimilated fly-ash based geopolymer structures possess higher mechanical strengths and durability. The microstructural studies (FESEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR) of the samples confirm the needle shaped nano sized mullite formation at 1000 °C temperature in its matrices. Thermal behaviour of the V2O5 based fly-ash depicted the synthesized nanoparticle was exothermic in reaction. The investigation demonstrates the formation of needle shaped mullite helps to enhance durability with higher bond strength of the composite structure and a new approach to utilize/recycle the vast resources of fly-ash with lower temperature requirement as an effective cementitious-based engineering materials.

Promoting energy-saving technologies in buildings, ensuring the sustainable use of resources, Maximum savings of resources and energy, increase energy efficiency, to reduce pollution, reducing the adverse environmental impact of construction activities, ensure construction safety, build sustainable buildings.
