A Naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide‐Containing Covalent Organic Polymer: Preparation, Single Crystal Structure and Battery Application

AbstractInspired by dative boron‐nitrogen (B←N) bonds proven to be the promising dynamic linkage for the construction of crystalline covalent organic polymers/frameworks (COPs/COFs), we employed 1,4‐bis(benzodioxaborole) benzene (BACT) and N,N′‐Di(4‐pyridyl)‐1,4,5,8‐naphthalenetetracarboxdiimide (DPNTCDI) as the corresponding building blocks to construct a functional COP (named as CityU‐25), which had been employed as an anode in rechargeable lithium ion batteries. CityU‐25 displayed an excellent reversible lithium storage capability of 455 mAh/g after 170 cycles at 0.1 A/g, and an impressive one of 673 mAh/g after 720 cycles at 0.5 A/g. These findings suggest that CityU‐25 is a standout candidate for advanced battery technologies, highlighting the potential application of this type of materials.

Electrolyte solvents as architects: How solvents guide the spontaneous formation of 3D porous nanostructures in Alloy- and Conversion-type battery anodes

During battery cycling, fragmented anode materials following alloying, conversion, and conversion-alloying reactions spontaneously form three-dimensional (3D) porous nanostructures, influenced by the electrolyte solvent. While it is known that various solvents can enhance anode energy capacity, rate performance, and cycling stability by promoting this 3D structure, the specific solvent property responsible for this transformation was unclear. Our study investigates the role of 48 commercial solvents in Sn nanoparticle self-assembly, using both experimental and simulation methods. We discovered that solvent electrophilicity is crucial in initiating a solvation layer, guiding the development of the 3D nanostructure. This finding is significant in addressing anode fragmentation issues in alloying, conversion, and conversion-alloying processes. The resulting 3D nanostructures show enhanced mechanical and chemical resilience, offering a cost-effective and robust method to improve battery performance. Our research provides new insights into nanostructured anode design, paving the way for advanced battery technologies and enhancing our understanding of nanostructure formation in batteries.

Stabilized Nickel‐Rich‐Layered Oxide Electrodes for High‐Performance Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Next‐generation Li‐ion batteries are expected to exhibit superior energy and power density, along with extended cycle life. Ni‐rich high‐capacity layered nickel manganese cobalt oxide electrode materials (NMC) hold promise in achieving these objectives, despite facing challenges such as capacity fade due to various degradation modes. Crack formation within NMC‐based cathode secondary particles, leading to parasitic reactions and the formation of inactive crystal structures, is a critical degradation mechanism. Mechanical and chemical degradation further deteriorate capacity and lifetime. To mitigate these issues, an artificial cathode electrolyte interphase can be applied to the active material before battery cycling. While atomic layer deposition (ALD) has been extensively explored for active material coatings, molecular layer deposition (MLD) offers a complementary approach. When combined with ALD, MLD enables the deposition of flexible hybrid coatings that can accommodate electrode material volume changes during battery operation. This study focuses on depositing ‐titanium terephthalate thin films on a electrode via ALD‐MLD. The electrochemical evaluation demonstrates favorable lithium‐ion kinetics and reduced electrolyte decomposition. Overall, the films deposited through ALD‐MLD exhibit promising features as flexible and protective coatings for high‐energy lithium‐ion battery electrodes, offering potential contributions to the enhancement of advanced battery technologies and supporting the growth of the EV and stationary battery industries.

Enhancing Aluminium‐Ion Battery Performance with Carbon Xerogel Cathodes

This study presents groundbreaking results in the field of rechargeable aluminium‐ion batteries, achieving stable capacities exceeding 300 mA h g‐1 for more than 300 cycles. The key to this achievement lies in the utilization of tailor‐made carbon materials and a urea‐AlCl3‐based electrolyte. The article investigates the optimal physicochemical properties of the active material necessary for effective electrodes for these aluminium‐ion batteries. This investigation employs a wide range of materials characterization techniques (XRD, SEM‐EDX, N2 adsorption‐desorption isotherms, Hg porosimetry, XPS, FTIR, Raman and TEM‐EDX) and electrochemical performance analyses to delve into the subject. These findings represent a significant improvement in the capacity of aluminium‐ion batteries, bringing us closer to their implementation and commercialization. This achievement is attributed to the utilization of readily available, cost‐effective, and non‐corrosive materials. The ability to customize carbon xerogels and the use of the urea‐AlCl3 electrolyte offer promising avenues for the practical implementation of these advanced battery technologies, leading to further enhancements in their performance and widespread adoption in various applications.

Dynamic Wireless Charging of Electric Vehicles Using RFID Protection

Abstract: Electric vehicle (EV) development in transportation is growing rapidly, offering clean and sustainable transportation. The key challenges in the EV are high cost, limited range, battery recycling, charging infrastructure, and many more. Among these challenges, charging presents a double difficulty: limited availability and slow charging times. To address these challenges, charging infrastructure needs to be expanded, develop wireless charging technologies and advancements in battery technologies. In wireless charging there is static, charging while the vehicle is at rest, and dynamic, charging when the vehicle is in motion. EVs can be charged dynamically while they are moving, maximizing energy efficiency and reducing downtime for charging. In this paper a small-scale prototype for dynamic wireless charging with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), is discussed. RFID integration enables convenient and secure user access and prevents energy theft by unauthorized charging. RFID tag is positioned at the start of the charging path. The dynamic charging system with RFID protection is shown to be feasible and effective by the prototype. The prototype has to demonstrate its capacity to safely and effectively charge EVs in real time while reducing the possibility of unwanted access or energy theft.

Wide Temperature Electrolytes for Lithium Batteries: Solvation Chemistry and Interfacial Reactions.

Improving the wide-temperature operation of rechargeable batteries is crucial for boosting the adoption of electric vehicles and further advancing their application scope in harsh environments like deep ocean and space probes. Herein, recent advances in electrolyte solvation chemistry are critically summarized, aiming to address the long-standing challenge of notable energy diminution at sub-zero temperatures and rapid capacity degradation at elevated temperatures (>45°C). This review provides an in-depth analysis of the fundamental mechanisms governing the Li-ion transport process, illustrating how these insights have been effectively harnessed to synergize with high-capacity, high-rate electrodes. Another critical part highlights the interplay between solvation chemistry and interfacial reactions, as well as the stability of the resultant interphases, particularly in batteries employing ultrahigh-nickel layered oxides as cathodes and high-capacity Li/Si materials as anodes. The detailed examination reveals how these factors are pivotal in mitigating the rapid capacity fade, thereby ensuring a long cycle life, superior rate capability, and consistent high-/low-temperature performance. In the latter part, a comprehensive summary of insitu/operational analysis is presented. This holistic approach, encompassing innovative electrolyte design, interphase regulation, and advanced characterization, offers a comprehensive roadmap for advancing battery technology in extreme environmental conditions.

In Situ Hydrogen Bonding‐Mediated Self‐Synthesis of Graphene‐Coated SnO2 as Anode Materials for Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Tin(IV) oxide (SnO2) has been recognized as the next frontier in innovative anode materials, set to revolutionize lithium‐ion batteries. Anticipated to replace graphite anodes, SnO2 boasts an ideal capacity of 782 mAh g−1 and an appropriate operating potential conducive to advanced battery technology. Nonetheless, the challenges posed by volume expansion and intricate synthesis route of Sn‐based anode materials have impeded their commercial viability. Herein, SnO2@graphene nanoparticles are synthesized through hydrogen bonding‐mediated self‐assembly process, utilizing polyethylene glycol (PEG) and tin tetrachloride as starting materials. The resultant nanoparticles exhibit uniform distribution, forming a sandwich structure with graphene. Sample SP‐0.3, obtained by incorporating 6 g of PEG, demonstrates remarkable capacity for reversible energy storage. It retains a capacity of 703.1 mAh g−1 even after 900 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A g−1. Coupled with the straightforward, convenient, and expeditious preparation method, the proposed technique positions the composite material as an invaluable candidate for commercialization.

Advancing Post‐Secondary Batteries under Lean Electrolyte Conditions through Interfacial Modification Strategies

AbstractIn response to the growing global demand for portable electronics and electric vehicles, there is an escalating interest in developing advanced battery technologies with superior energy density. Research efforts are focused on unveiling post‐lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) that outperform the performance of current LIBs through the use of innovative active electrode materials. Yet, these technological advancements face significant hurdles, primarily due to intricate interfacial issues within battery components. In laboratory‐scale studies, these challenges often lead to the utilization of excess electrolytes, which complicates the precise evaluation of battery performance. This review emphasizes the significance of designing future batteries that operate effectively under lean electrolyte usage conditions. It discusses essential principles, obstacles, and diverse strategies for interfacial modification, including in situ growth, coating of supportive layers, and embedding of active substances in pre‐structured templates. Furthermore, it compiles and examines data on the lean electrolyte conditions achieved in various battery systems, contrasting their energy densities with those of commercially established batteries. Ultimately, the potential of future batteries to achieve or even exceed the energy densities of existing commercial batteries is assessed, thereby offering a strategic roadmap for the progression of next‐generation battery technologies.

Multiagent Q-Learning Approach for the Recharging Scheduling of Electric Automated Guided Vehicles in Container Terminals

In recent years, advancements in battery technology have led to increased adoption of electric automated guided vehicles in container terminals. Given how critical these vehicles are to terminal operations, this trend requires efficient recharging scheduling for automated guided vehicles, and the main challenges arise from limited charging station capacity and tight vehicle schedules. Motivated by the dynamic nature of the problem, the recharging scheduling problem for an entire vehicle fleet given capacitated stations is formulated as a Markov decision process model. Then, it is solved using a multiagent Q-learning (MAQL) approach to produce a recharging schedule that minimizes the delay of jobs. Numerical experiments show that under a stochastic environment in terms of vehicle travel time, MAQL enables the exploration of better scheduling by coordinating across the entire vehicle fleet and charging facilities and outperforms various benchmark approaches, with an additional improvement of 18.8% on average over the best rule-based heuristic and 5.4% over the predetermined approach. Towards to Battery Digital Passport: Reviewing Regulations and Standards for Second-Life Batteries

Greenhouse gas emissions from transportation harm the environment. In response to these environmental concerns, numerous countries encourage the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) as a more environmentally friendly option than traditional gasoline-powered vehicles. Advances in battery technology have made batteries an alternative solution for energy storage in stationary applications and for electric mobility. Reduced lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) production costs due to economies of scale, electrode material and cell design developments, and manufacturing process improvements have driven this success. This trend is expected to increase the number of LIBs on the market that may be discarded in the environment at the end of their useful life if more sustainable alternatives are not technologically mature. This coming environmental concern can be mitigated by collecting wasted EV batteries, reconfiguring them, and reusing them for applications with less stringent weight, performance, and size requirements. This method would extend battery life and reduce environmental effects. The present work investigates the main regulatory structures of the second-life battery industry that require rules, technical standards, and laws. To achieve this objective, a systematic review was carried out following a strict protocol that includes identifying relevant studies, extracting data and information, evaluating, and summarizing information. This paper explains the primary rules and technical standards governing the second-life battery business. The findings highlight the need for universities, research institutions, and government agencies to evaluate the second-life battery industry objectively. This would enable the creation of new technological regulations and laws for this burgeoning industry.

Tin dioxide coated rice husk silica as lead-acid battery positive additive for enhancing the performance under power-intensive applications

Lead-acid batteries rapidly response to instantaneous high-current, rendering them particularly effective for high-power applications, including power traction batteries, starter batteries, and start-stop systems. However, issues arise during intense working rate (6–10C), causing significant polarization that leads to severe oxygen evolution side reactions and softening and shedding of positive active material (PAM), limiting the battery's cycle life. This study introduces a tin dioxide (SnO2) coated rice husk silica (RH-SiO2) composite as an positive additive in lead-acid batteries. The composite (SnO2/RH-SiO2) has a hierarchical pore structure from RH-SiO2, provides a robust conductive framework. The lattice structure of the SnO2 is similar to that of PbO2, while induces the formation of a PbSnO3 intermediate phase during formation process. SnO2/RH-SiO2 can also accelerates lead dioxide deposition and improves the interphase conversion efficiency, while significantly enhances the transformation of α- and β-PbO2, leading to a 20.7% increase in discharge specific capacity. Compared to a standard battery, up to 3.7 times longer at 100% deep discharge cycle life and 4.7 times longer in start-stop-mode testing. In our finding the SnO2/RH-SiO2 composite serves as a highly effective additive for augmenting the performance and longevity of lead-acid batteries in high-power applications, presenting a significant advancement in battery technology.

A Study of Select Variables Impacting Buying Behaviour of Electric Cars In India

The automobile industry is currently undergoing a significant transformation in its approach to transportation, primarily driven by increased awareness of climate change and limited resources. The recent resurgence of electric vehicles in the market can be attributed to various factors, including advancements in battery technology and government policies aimed at reducing vehicle emissions. This research focused on examining the factors that influence consumer purchasing behavior regarding electric cars in India. Primary data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire distributed to consumers. The survey sample was selected using a combination of conventional and snowball sampling techniques, drawing participants from the target population. The study and survey took place in the Delhi/NCR region from January to February 2023. A total of 649 questionnaires were distributed, out of which 324 were returned. After analysing the data, 214 fully completed responses were used for further analysis. The findings indicated that financial barriers, concerns about vehicle performance, lack of charging infrastructure, environmental awareness, societal influence, and knowledge of electric vehicles all significantly impact the decision-making process when considering the purchase of electric vehicles.

Gelatin‐Derived Hard Carbon Achieves Effective Control of Microstructure toward Fast and Durable Sodium Storage

AbstractHard carbon (HC) is the most promising anode material for commercial sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). However, the complex composition of biomass‐derived HC precursors often requires great efforts to impart controlled structures and desired performance. Effective control of the microstructure is still highly desirable for HC anodes. Herein, gelatin is employed as a precursor to regulating the HC structure, including defect concentration, average interlayer spacing, and the pore structure. This provides insights into systematic improvement strategies of sodium‐ion transfer kinetics toward fast and durable sodium storage. Gelatin, as a bio‐precursor, contains abundant ─COOH and ─NH2 groups that promote metal cross‐linking and facilitate the control of the structural evolution of HC. By reasonably controlling the defect content and pore structure, the electrochemical performance can be tailored with enhanced kinetics of sodium‐ion storage. The optimized HC shows a high reversible capacity of 400 mAh g−1, outstanding rate performance, and structural stability over 10 000 cycles with a capacity retention of 77.8%. This work leads to the development of high‐performance HC materials from biomass, which is essential for advancements in battery technology.
