Histopathology of Irradiated Yellow Mealworm Adult and Larval Midguts1, 2

Radiation dosages of 5-100 kilorads had a pronounced effect on the midgut of both larval and adult yellow mealworms, Tenebrio molitor L. (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae). Degenerative changes were positively correlated with both dose and time elapsed after exposure. The regenerative cells that renew the epithelial lining of the midgut were particularly sensitive to radiation damage; the damage eventually resulted in loss of the midgut epithelium.

Survival in Adult Mealworm Beetles (Tenebrio molitor) of Learning acquired at the Larval Stage

USING larvae of the beetle Tenebrio molitor, we tested the possibility that learning might survive through metamorphosis. This beetle shows a complete metamorphosis, involving practically all parts of the body. Accurate information about the modifications of the epicuticle and its related structures in metamorphosis is available1, but little is known about the modifications of the central nervous system.

Teratology of the beetle Tenebrio molitor: II. The development and gross description of the pupal-winged adult

A teratology characterized by the retention of essential aspects of the pupal wing in the adult mealworm, Tenebrio molitor is described. The developmental sequence which leads to the emergence of the abnormal adult was studied in the pupa, and the significance of the general state of health of the pupa in the emergence of the abnormal beetle is considered. By an observation of the various normal and abnormal pupae, the following became evident: (1) Morphologically normal pupae emerge as morphologically normal, or, in rare instances, very minimally defective adults. (2) The type of pupal abnormality is not as significant in the emergence of a pupal-winged adult as is the extent of the abnormality and the resulting general state of health of the pupa. (3) Size, flatness of the abdominal area, and the subcuticular blackened areas in the head and prothoracic area contribute significantly to the retention of the pupal wing by affecting the state of well-being of the pupa, while the condition of the wing itself plays only a secondary role inasmuch as it affects the general health of the insect. (4) There is often a rapid deterioration in the condition of the pupa prior to emergence of the pupal-winged adult. This is evidenced by a general softness and swelling of the abdominal area followed by a loss of response to tactile stimuli and a collapse of the abdomen. There is a depletion of internal moisture and reduction in the amount of fat body.

Changes in the Concentration of Certain Amino Acids in Homogenates of the Yellow Mealworm, Tenebrio molitor, During Aging1

A chromatographic study of amino acids separated from homogenates of adult yellow mealworms, Tenebrio molitor L., of different ages obtained from young and old parents showed that methionine, phenylalanine, tryptophane, and tyrosine decreased during aging in each parental age group. Except for methionine, the changes were greater in beetles from old, than in those from young, parents. The decreases in phenylalanine and tyrosine probably are associated with cuticular pigmentation, and in tryptophane with ommochrome pigments of the eye and other structures. Methionine may be converted to cysteine which may bind free radicals. Its decrease may be concerned with changes associated with aging. Alanine, lysine, proline, threonine, and valine did not show changes which could be associated with aging or with parental age.
