Previous work has shown that eggs or egg covers and an egg marking pheromone on legume seeds act as deterrence cues for ovipositing females of Callosobruchus maculatus (F.). This study demonstrates that females may also discriminate between seeds with differing numbers of adult emergence holes. In no-choice tests, females laid more eggs on seeds with no hole or few holes than on seeds with many holes. Similarly, in choice tests, seeds bearing no holes or few holes were preferred for oviposition to those bearing greater number of holes.
