Life Expectancy in Marine Mammals Is Unrelated to Telomere Length but Is Associated With Body Size.

Marine mammals vary greatly in size and lifespan across species. This study determined whether measures of adult body weight, length and relative telomere length were related to lifespan. Skin tissue samples (n = 338) were obtained from 23 marine mammal species, including four Mysticeti, 19 Odontoceti and one dugong species, and the DNA extracted to measure relative telomere length using real-time PCR. Life span, adult body weight, and adult body length of each species were retrieved from existing databases. The phylogenetic signal analysis revealed that body length might be a significant factor for shaping evolutionary processes of cetacean species through time, especially for genus Balaenoptera that have an enormous size. Further, our study found correlations between lifespan and adult body weight (R2 = 0.6465, p < 0.001) and adult body length (R2 = 0.6142, p ≤0.001), but no correlations with relative telomere length (R2 = −0.0476, p = 0.9826). While data support our hypothesis that larger marine mammals live longer, relative telomere length is not a good predictor of species longevity.

Two sexes respond equally to food restriction in a sexually dimorphic but not body mass dimorphic jumping spider.

Natural selection favors animals that evolve developmental and behavioral responses that buffer the negative effects of food restrictions. These buffering responses vary both between species and within species. Many studies have shown sex‐specific responses to environmental changes, usually in species with sexual size dimorphism (SSD), less found in species with weak or no SSD, which suggests that sizes of different sexes are experiencing different selections. However, previous studies usually investigated development and behavior separately, and the balanced situation where males and females of sexually dimorphic species respond in the same way to food restriction remains little known. Here, we investigated this in Phintelloides versicolor (Salticidae) that presents sexual dimorphism in color and shape but weak SSD. We examined whether food restriction induced the same responses in males and females in development duration, adult body size and weight, daily time allocated to foraging, and hunting. We found food restriction induced similar responses in both sexes: both exhibited longer development duration, smaller adult body size and weight, higher probability of staying outside nests and noticing prey immediately, and higher hunting success. However, there were sexual differences regardless of food condition: females showed faster development, smaller adult body size, higher probability of staying outside of nests, and higher hunting success. These indicated the differential selection on male and female sizes of P. versicolor could be under a balanced situation, where males and females show equal developmental and behavioral plasticity to environmental constraints.

Establishing realistic exposure estimates of solitary bee larvae via pollen for use in risk assessment.

Bees foraging in agricultural habitats can be exposed to plant protection products. To limit the risk of adverse events, a robust risk assessment is needed, which requires reliable estimates for the expected exposure. The exposure pathways to developing solitary bees in particular are not well described and, in the currently proposed form, rely on limited information. To build a scaling model predicting the amount of protein developing solitary bees need based on adult body weight, we used published data on the volume of pollen solitary bees provide for their offspring. This model was tested against and ultimately updated with additional literature data on bee weight and protein content of emerged bees. We rescaled this model, based on the known pollen protein content of bee‐visited flowers, to predict the expected amount of pollen a generalist solitary bee would likely provide based on its adult body weight, and tested these predictions in the field. We found overall agreement between the models' predictions and the measured values in the field, but additional data are needed to confirm these initial results. Our study suggests that scaling models in the bee risk assessment could complement existing risk assessment approaches and facilitate the further development of accurate risk characterization for solitary bees; ultimately the models will help to protect them during their foraging activity in agricultural settings. Macherla: A new mutton type sheep population of southern India

Phenotypic characterization and evaluation of Macherla sheep population was done by undertaking survey in Guntur and Prakasham districts of Andhra Pradesh. Macherla animals are medium to large in size, mainly in white coat colour with large brown or black patches in the body, face and legs. The animals with brown patches are known as Macherla brown in breeding area. Convex nasal bridge, leafy ears, black muzzle and black/brown and white coat colour is predominant. Males are horned and females are polled, however some females are noticed with horns in few flocks. The horns are oriented backward, downward and forward. Ears are medium to large in size and leafy/semi-drooping. Tail is very small and thin. The adult body weight ranged from 38 to 69 kg in rams and 25 to 60 kg in ewes. The overall body length, height, chest girth, face length, face width, ear length and tail length were 70.07±0.32, 77.05±0.31, 87.75±0.41, 25.46±0.21, 10.49±0.08, 16.11±0.09 and 9.67±0.15 cm, respectively. The study revealed that the Macherla sheep is phenotypically different from other sheep breeds of the region and famous for mutton production as well as livelihood security of the farmers maintaining this sheep population.

Dietary exposure assessment of paralytic shellfish toxins through shellfish consumption in Shenzhen population, China.

Paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) produced by certain marine dinoflagellates accumulate in filter-feeding marine bivalves. We used LC-MS/MS to detect and quantify 13 PSTs in 188 shellfish samples of 14 species collected from Shenzhen city's Buji seafood wholesale market from March 2019 to February 2020. Twenty-six of 188 shellfish samples (13.8%) were PSTs detectable. Within 14 species, 10 out of 34 noble clam Chlamys nobilis samples contain detectable PSTs with the highest detection rate 29.4%. Seven out of 17 samples from Nan'ao island contained detectable PSTs with the highest detection rate 41.2% among 11 origins. Samples containing PSTs were concentrated in spring and winter, with the highest levels in March>December>January. Among PSTs detected, C1 was dominant. Acute dietary exposure assessment for Shenzhen residents were based on mean adult body weight, 99th percentile daily shellfish consumption of Shenzhen food consumption survey 2008 and maximum PSTs concentration for each shellfish species. The outcome for Chlamys nobilis was 2.4~3.7-fold higher than recommended ARfDs. Mean PSTs concentration, P99, and mean shellfish consumption were used to assess chronic dietary exposure. The results were lower than recommended ARfDs. In conclusion, residents in Shenzhen are at risk for acute PSTs poisoning, while relatively safe from chronic PSTs exposure.

Phenotypic and Carcass Characterization of Hassan Sheep

Background: Hassan sheep is the third most populous breed of the five registered sheep breeds from Karnataka with limited studies on its morphological and carcass characteristics. Hence, the study was undertaken to know the present status of morphological and carcass characteristics of this breed. Methods: A total of 34 randomly selected flocks were surveyed and the data on various parameters were collected. The morphometrical data was collected on 344 sheep belonging to eight flocks from the breeding tract. The carcass characteristics were documented by slaughtering six male lambs (between nine to twelve months of age). Result: These sheep had varied coat colours viz. complete white (23.3%), white with light brown patches (58.1%) and white with black patches (18.6%) on head and neck region. It was observed that 40.4 per cent of males and only 1.4 per cent of females were horned. Atrophied ears were noticed in 2.3 per cent of these sheep. The average adult body length (cm), height at wither (cm), chest girth (cm), paunch (cm), ear length (cm), tail length (cm) and average adult body weight (kg) were 66.4±0.62, 65.03±1.45, 75.2±1.02, 76.5±1.38, 15.2±0.07, 11.5±0.07 and 32.7±2.03 in males and 63.8±0.85, 61.7±1.38, 71.8±2.32, 74.5±2.60, 15.0±0.34, 11.3±0.08 and 27.8±1.21 in females, respectively. The difference in body weight between males and females increased significantly over the age. The pre-slaughter weight (PSW), hot carcass weight (HCW) and dressing percentage recorded were 20.3±1.42 Kg, 9.5±0.23 kg and 46.80 per cent, respectively.

Genetic characterization of F0 outbred and F1 inbred Swiss albino mice using microsatellite markers and their performance evaluation

Swiss albino mice have been widely utilized in various biological researches worldwide. Phenotypic and fitness related traits of F0 and F1 inbred mice were estimated on 918 and 707 individual offsprings, respectively. The influence of fixed effects (litter size and sex) on birth weight (BW), weaning weight (WW) and adult body weight (ABW) in both the generations were found to be statistically significant. Genetic characterization of F0 outbred and the F1 inbred strain of Swiss albino mice were evaluated by using 10 microsatellites markers. The results indicated that total number of alleles per locus ranged from 3 (D2Mit61, D3Mit55, D8Mit14, D9Mit27, D10Mit180, D11Mit167) to 4 (D1Mit15, D2Mit51, D5Mit18, D7Mit323) in F0 and F1 inbred population, with a mean value of 3.4 indicating polymorphism in all 10 loci. The mean of effective number of alleles was 2.935 and 2.733 in F0 and F1 population, respectively. Estimates of the FIS ranged from 0.139 (D10Mit180) to 0.999 (D9Mit27); and from 0.109 (D3Mit55) to 0.679 (D2Mit51) in F0 and F1 inbred population, respectively. The estimated mean markerbased FIS was 0.294 and 0.372 in F0 and F1 populations, respectively. The mean values of observed heterozygosity (Ho) and expected heterozygosity (He) were 0.460 and 0.654, respectively for F0 and 0.390 and 0.627, respectively for F1 inbred mice population. Slight reduction in heterozygosity and 7.8% increase in inbreeding coefficient were observed in F1 inbred in comparison to F0 population. The results suggested that genome wide microsatellite genotyping might be more useful for accurate measuring and reliable estimation of population genetic parameters and inbreeding coefficient.

Maternal Chronodisruption Throughout Pregnancy Impairs Glucose Homeostasis and Adipose Tissue Physiology in the Male Rat Offspring

Compelling evidence in rats support the idea that gestational chronodisruption induces major changes in maternal circadian rhythms and fetal development and that these changes impact adult life at many physiological levels. Using a model of chronic photoperiod shifting throughout gestation (CPS), in which pregnant female rats (Sprague–Dawley strain; n = 16 per group) were exposed to lighting schedule manipulation every 3–4 days reversing the photoperiod completely or light/dark photoperiod (12/12; LD), we explored in the adult rat male offspring body weight gain, glucose homeostasis, adipose tissue content, adipose tissue response to norepinephrine (NE), and adipose tissue proteomic in the basal condition with standard diet (SD) and in response to high-fat diet (HFD). In adult CPS male (100–200 days old; n = 8 per group), we found increasing body weight, under SD and adiposity. Also, we found an increased response to intraperitoneal glucose (IGTT). After 12 weeks of HFD, white adipose tissue depots in CPS offspring were increased further, and higher IGTT and lower intraperitoneal insulin tolerance response were found, despite the lack of changes in food intake. In in vitro experiments, we observed that adipose tissue (WAT and BAT) glycerol response to NE from CPS offspring was decreased, and it was completely abolished by HFD. At the proteomic level, in CPS adipose tissue, 275 proteins displayed differential expression, compared with LD animals fed with a standard diet. Interestingly, CPS offspring and LD fed with HFD showed 20 proteins in common (2 upregulated and 18 downregulated). Based on these common proteins, the IPA analysis found that two functional pathways were significantly altered by CPS: network 1 (AKT/ERK) and network 2 (TNF/IL4; data are available via ProteomeXchange with identifier PXD026315). The present data show that gestational chronodisruption induced deleterious effects in adipose tissue recruitment and function, supporting the idea that adipose tissue function was programmed in utero by gestational chronodisruption, inducing deficient metabolic responses that persist into adulthood.

Peer-supported lifestyle interventions on body weight, energy intake, and physical activity in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

There is an increasing interest in peer interventions in the management of chronic conditions, but evidence on peer interventions for body weight is lacking. The aim of this study was to examine the efficacy of peer interventions on body weight, energy intake, and physical activity in adults. Interventions delivered by peer (lay member that participants identify with) were included. We searched 14 databases. Outcomes were combined in the meta-analysis using the inverse variance random-effects model. From 2435 articles, 65 articles were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis (n= 15,673). Peer interventions resulted in significant reduction in weight (mean difference [MD] -1.05 kg; 95% confidence interval [CI] -1.68, -0.43; 95% prediction interval [PI] -3.25, 1.14; 28 studies; 7142 participants), BMI (MD -0.24 kg/m2 ; 95% CI -0.44, -0.04; 95% PI -0.92, 0.45; 25 studies; 6672 participants), waist circumference (MD -0.75 cm; 95% CI -1.29, -0.21; 95% PI -1.36, -0.14; 12 studies; 4280 participants), and significant increase in physical activity (SMD 0.20; 95% CI 0.09, 0.32; 95% PI -0.46, 0.86; 41 studies; 10,778 participants) with no significant effect on energy intake. This study suggests peer interventions are effective in reducing waist circumference, but further research is needed to confirm its effect on other obesity-related outcomes.

Epidemiology of periodontal disease in dogs in the UK primary-care veterinary setting.

ObjectivesPeriodontal disease is a frequent diagnosis of dogs and can have severe negative impacts on welfare. It was hypothesised that breeds with skull shapes that differ most in conformation from the moderate mesocephalic skull shape have higher odds of periodontal disease.Materials and MethodsThe cohort study included a random sample of dogs under primary veterinary care in 2016 from the VetCompass Programme database. Risk factor analysis used random effects multivariable logistic regression modelling.ResultsThe study included a random sample of 22,333 dogs. The 1‐year period prevalence for diagnosis with periodontal disease was 12.52% (95% CI: 12.09 to 12.97). Eighteen breeds showed increased odds compared with crossbred dogs. Breeds with the highest odds included Toy Poodle (odds ratio 3.97, 95% confidence intervals 2.21 to 7.13), King Charles Spaniel (odds ratio 2.63, 95% confidence interval 1.50 to 4.61), Greyhound (odds ratio 2.58, 95% confidence interval 1.75 to 3.80) and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel (odds ratio 2.39, 95% confidence interval 1.85 to 3.09). Four breeds showed reduced odds compared with crossbreds. Brachycephalic breeds had 1.25 times the odds (95% confidence interval 1.11 to 1.42) of periodontal disease compared with mesocephalic breeds. Spaniel types had 1.63 times the odds (95% confidence interval 1.42 to 1.87) compared with non‐spaniel types. Increasing adult bodyweight was associated with progressively decreasing odds of periodontal disease.Clinical SignificanceThe high prevalence identified in this study highlights periodontal disease as a priority welfare concern for predisposed breeds. Veterinarians can use this information to promote improved dental care in predisposed dogs, especially as these dogs age.

Melanocortin 4 receptor mutations become common

In a new paper, Wade etal. (2021) analyzed the frequency of MC4R loss-of-function (LoF) mutations in a population-based Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. The frequency was 1 in 337 and the authors showed that MC4R LoF variants significantly correlated with increased body weight and fat mass in children and adults (cumulating in additional 17.76kg weight in adulthood). Hence, the authors provide evidence that MC4R LoF variants are more common than previously expected.

Total water intake by kilogram of body weight: Analysis of the Australian 2011 to 2013 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey.

Water is critical for human survival, yet water intake equations may not reflect contemporary populations. This research aims to determine the total water intake of a representative Australian population, per kilogram of body weight (mL/kg) and stratified by age and sex. A secondary analysis of the 2011 to 2013 National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (n=10 146) was conducted. Dietary intake from food and beverages was assessed by a 24-hour recall, with respondent's weight objectively measured. Data were descriptively analysed, with multiple linear regressions used to identify the impact of demographic and physiologic factors on total water intake (mL/kg). The median (interquartile range) daily total water intake per kilogram of body weight for children (2-8 years), adolescents (9-18 years) and adults (19+ years) were 77.1 (57.4-100)mL/kg, 40.4 (29.3-53.4)mL/kg and 35.5mL/kg (26.1-47.8), respectively. Increasing height and waist circumference were associated with reduced total water intake, with a change of -1.03 mL/kg (-1.43, -0.618) [coefficient (95% confidence interval)] in children for height and -0.448 mL/kg (-0.484, -0.412) in adults for waist circumference. Similarly, seasonality decreased intake, with greatest reductions in winter [adolescents: -4.11 mL/kg (-6.83, -1.40)]. In comparison, being male, living in rural areas and having a physical occupation were associated with greater intake, by 1.73 mL/kg (0.347, 3.10), 4.74 mL/kg (3.47, 6.00) and 2.82 (trade workers: 1.08, 4.59) in adults, respectively. Total water intake (mL/kg) decreased with age in both sexes. The results highlight possibilities to incorporate other factors into water intake equations to improve their accuracy.

Physiologically Based Pharmacokinetic Models Are Effective Support for Pediatric Drug Development

Pediatric drug development faces many difficulties. Traditionally, pediatric drug doses are simply calculated linearly based on the body weight, age, and body surface area of adults. Due to the ontogeny of children, this simple linear scaling may lead to drug overdose in pediatric patients. The physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) model, as a mathematical model, contributes to the research and development of pediatric drugs. An example of a PBPK model guiding drug dose selection in pediatrics has emerged and has been approved by the relevant regulatory agencies. In this review, we discuss the principle of the PBPK model, emphasize the necessity of establishing a pediatric PBPK model, introduce the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion of the pediatric PBPK model, and understand the various applications and related prospects of the pediatric PBPK model.

Partial disintegration of vegetable cell wall during cooking improves vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) bioaccessibility in in vitro digestion.

Vegetables rich in vitamin K consumption could prevent bleeding and maintain bone status. The aims of the present work were to investigate i) the effect of household cooking (i.e., boiling for 5minat 100°C in distilled water and stir-frying for 3minat 180°C in hot canola oil) on phylloquinone bioaccessibility of five rich phylloquinone leafy vegetables, namely Water spinach (Ipomoea aquatic Forssk), Amaranth (Amaranthus blitum subsp. oleraceus L.), Chinese broccoli (Brassica alboglabra), Pak choi (Brassica rapa L.) and Drumstick (Moringa oleifera Lam.), and ii) the structural changes of these leaves before and after in vitro gastro-intestinal digestion. All the experiments were realized in triplicate for each vegetable. The amounts of phylloquinone in leafy vegetables were noticeable in almost all species and ranged from 94 to 182μg/100g DM. Their cell wall polysaccharide contents greatly varied from 4.3 to 8.4g for 100g. The content in bioaccessible phylloquinone was low in raw leaves (<25μg/100g DM) as well as its bioaccessibility (<15%). Leaf pectin content impaired phylloquinone bioaccessibility using principal component analysis. Boiling and stir-frying significantly improved the bioaccessibility of phylloquinone in leaves by a factor of three to twelve and two to seven respectively (p<0.05). These variations were associated with changes in leaf structure. Palisade and spongy cells appeared ruptured and disorganized after stir-frying. Given the estimated bioaccessibility of phylloquinones, the consumption of 500g of cooked wet leaves per day would cover phylloquinone needs of an individual adult average body weight.

Comparative efficacy of glucose-lowering medications on body weight and blood pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and network meta-analysis.

To compare the effects of glucose-lowering drugs on body weight and blood pressure in adults with type 2 diabetes. We searched Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Library, and grey literature sources until 29 September 2020 for randomized controlled trials of at least 24 weeks' duration assessing the effects of glucose-lowering drugs on body weight and blood pressure in adults with type 2 diabetes. We performed frequentist network meta-analyses and calculated weighted mean differences and 95% confidence intervals combining trial arms of different approved doses of a given intervention into a single group. We evaluated the confidence in pooled estimates using the CINeMA (Confidence In Network Meta-Analysis) framework. In total, 424 trials (276 336 patients) assessing 21 antidiabetic medications from nine drug classes were included. Subcutaneous semaglutide was the most efficacious in reducing body weight followed by oral semaglutide, exenatide twice-daily, liraglutide, and the sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) inhibitors empagliflozin, canagliflozin, dapagliflozin and ertugliflozin. The same agents also conferred the greatest reductions in systolic blood pressure. Metformin had a modest effect in reducing body weight and systolic blood pressure. Diastolic blood pressure was reduced with the SGLT-2 inhibitors pioglitazone, exenatide twice-daily and semaglutide. In subgroup analyses of trials with over 52 weeks' duration, semaglutide and SGLT-2 inhibitors reduced both body weight and systolic blood pressure. Semaglutide and SGLT-2 inhibitors conferred reductions both in body weight and blood pressure that were sustainable for over 1 year of treatment. These agents may be preferable treatment options for patients with type 2 diabetes who are overweight/obese and/or hypertensive.

Preferences and emotional response to weight-related terminology used by healthcare professionals to describe body weight in people living with overweight and obesity.

Previous studies have explored people's perceptions of weight-related terminology; however, to date, limited data has explored the emotional response to weight-related terms used by healthcare professionals (HCPs). This study explored the preferences and emotional responses of terms used by HCPs to describe body weight and of parents to describe their children's weight. A total of 2911 adults completed an online cross-sectional survey, with 1693 living with overweight or obesity (mean age 49.2 years [SD 12.5], female (96%), median body mass index (BMI) 31.4kg/m2 [28.1, 36.5]). The survey explored preferences of 22 weight-related terms using a 5-point Likert scale and their emotional response to these terms (using 7-core emotions). Parents also indicated preferences and emotional responses to terms used to describe their children's weight. Respondents completed the modified weight bias internalization scale to examine how this may impacted preferences. 'Weight', "unhealthy weight" and "overweight" were the three preferred terms, while "super obese", "chubby", and "extra-large" were least preferred in people living with overweight and obesity. Parents preferred 'weight', "unhealthy weight" and "body mass index", and least preferred "fat", "extra-large" and "extremely obese" when describing their children's weight. All terms elicited a negative emotional response. The most commonly emotion was sadness for terms to describe adult's bodyweight, and anger for terms used to describe children's weight. All BMI categories reported disgust with terms incorporating "obese". Our results offer novel insight into the preferred terminology and emotional responses to terminology used by HCPs for both adults and parents to describe their children's weight.

PROTECTIVE EFFECTS OF FLAX SEED OIL ON BODY WEIGHT CHANGES CAUSED BY CAFFEINATED ENERGY DRINK IN ADULT MALE ALBINO RATS

Flax seed oil has proven dynamic multi systemic effects since ancient times. Consumption of caffeinated energy drinks has also been increased among youth in order to increase mental and physical performance. Due to their widespread usage, hazardous effects on various systems of human body have been reported. &#x0D; Aims &amp; Objectives: To evaluate the protective effects of flax seed oil on caffeinated energy drink induced changes in adult male albino rat body weight.&#x0D; Place &amp; Duration of Study: This study was conducted in FPGMI, Shaikh Zayed Hospital Lahore for 8 weeks.&#x0D; Material &amp; methods: 32 adult male albino rats average weight (250-300g) were randomly divided into four groups of 8 animals each. Group A (Control) received corn oil 5ml/kg body weight by gavage in addition to basal diet daily for 8 weeks. Group B (Experimental) were fed on caffeinated energy drink (15ml/kg body weight) and corn oil (5ml/kg body weight). Group C (Experimental) received caffeinated energy drink (15ml/kg body weight) and 40% of flax seed oil (5ml/kg body weight), while group D (Experimental) received caffeinated energy drink(15ml/kg body weight) and 60% flax seed oil (5ml/kg body weight) daily for 8 weeks respectively. The animals were weighed before and after experiment.&#x0D; Results: The mean body weight of rats before experiment was insignificant (p = 0.945). After experiment the mean body weight of experimental group B, C and D was increased as compared to control group A, but statistically it was insignificant ( p = 0.319) however, percentage body weight gain was significant( p = 0.003).&#x0D; Conclusion: Flax seed oil alleviated altered body weight caused by caffeinated energy drink in adult male albino rats

Street view greenness is associated with lower risk of obesity in adults: Findings from the 33 Chinese community health study

BackgroundUrban greenness may protect against obesity, but very few studies have assessed ‘street view’ (SV) greenness metrics, which may better capture people's actual exposure to greenness compared to commonly-used satellite-derived metrics. We aimed to investigate these associations further in a Chinese adult study. MethodsOur analysis included 24,845 adults in the 33 Chinese Community Health Study in 2009. SV images from Tencent Map, segmented by machine learning algorithms, were used to determine the average proportion of green vegetation in SV images at community level in 800m road network buffer. Sensitivity analyses were performed with an alternative buffer size. Overall greenness was assessed as normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in 800 m buffer. We used predicted PM2.5 and monitored NO2 as proxies of air pollution. Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC) were regressed on SV greenness by generalized linear mixed models, with adjustment for covariates. Mediation analyses were performed to assess the mediation effects of air pollution. ResultsEach interquartile range (IQR = 3.6%) increase in street view greenness was associated with a 0.15 kg/m2 (95% CI: −0.22, −0.09) decrease in BMI and 0.23 cm (95% CI: −0.35, −0.11) reduction in HC, and was associated with 7% lower odds of overweight (OR = 0.93, 95% CI:0.90, 0.96) and 18% lower odds of obesity (OR = 0.82, 95% CI:0.76, 0.89). Similar effect estimation was observed compared with commonly-used NDVI measures. PM2.5 and NO2 mediated 15.5% and 6.1% of the effects of SV greenness with BMI, respectively. ConclusionsOur findings suggest beneficial associations between community-level SV greenness and lower body weight in Chinese adults. The effects were observed in women but not in men. Air pollution may partially mediate the association. These findings may have implications to support efforts to promote greening in urban areas.

Factors Influencing Serum Cholesterol Response to Dairy Fat Consumption in Overweight Adults: Secondary Analysis From an RCT

Abstract Objectives Recent evidence has demonstrated beneficial effects of dairy fat consumption on serum cholesterol levels when consumed in the form of cheese1. However, inter-individual variance in response to food consumption is known to affect the risk of diet-related diseases2,3. The extent of this variability and the determinants of response to dairy fat are currently unknown. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify factors associated with lipid metabolism response to a dairy fat intervention study and investigate the relationship between them. Methods A 6-wk randomised parallel intervention trial1 was carried out in overweight, but otherwise healthy adults (≥50 years). Participants (n = 104) consumed ∼40g dairy fat daily in addition to their usual diet, in 1 of 3 different forms; butter, cheese, or cheese + butter. Intervention diets were also balanced for protein and calcium1. For this analysis, intervention diet groups were considered together as one dairy fat intervention. Participants were categorised into tertiles based on their % change in serum total cholesterol (TC) post-intervention, ranked from the largest decrease to the largest increase. Multivariate analysis (bonferroni-corrected) was used to assess differences between tertiles of responders in baseline characteristics (age, gender, metabolic markers, and body composition) (p &amp;lt; 0.05). Results Participants showing the largest % decrease in TC had significantly higher levels of TC, low-density lipoprotein (LDL-c) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL-c), and lower levels of triglycerides (TAG) at baseline compared to those displaying the largest % increase. Those with the largest % decrease in LDL-c displayed similar differences across groups, reporting higher baseline levels of LDL-c and TAG. No differences were apparent when categorised by HDL. Multiple regression analysis revealed that the variation of % change in TC and LDL is associated with baseline TC, TAG, body weight and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP; p &amp;lt; 0.05). Conclusions Our preliminary results indicate that the variance in cholesterol response to 6 weeks’ consumption of dairy fat is associated with baseline TC, TAG, body weight and hsCRP in overweight adults. Further analysis to understand the mechanisms associated with response to dairy fat is warranted. Funding Sources Food for Health Ireland, Enterprise Ireland.
