Deep learning in finance assessing twitter sentiment impact and prediction on stocks

The widespread adoption of social media platforms has led to an influx of data that reflects public sentiment, presenting a novel opportunity for market analysis. This research aims to quantify the correlation between the fleeting sentiments expressed on social media and the measurable fluctuations in the stock market. By adapting a pre-existing sentiment analysis algorithm, we refined a model specifically for evaluating the sentiment of tweets associated with financial markets. The model was trained and validated against a comprehensive dataset of stock-related discussions on Twitter, allowing for the identification of subtle emotional cues that may predict changes in stock prices. Our quantitative approach and methodical testing have revealed a statistically significant relationship between sentiment expressed on Twitter and subsequent stock market activity. These findings suggest that machine learning algorithms can be instrumental in enhancing the analytical capabilities of financial experts. This article details the technical methodologies used, the obstacles overcome, and the potential benefits of integrating machine learning-based sentiment analysis into the realm of economic forecasting.

A Study on the Impacts of social media Towards Job Performance among Lecturers in UiTM Shah Alam

The widespread adoption of social media platforms has significantly transformed the way individuals communicate, interact, and share information. The existing research is limited in terms of industry representation and organizational levels, leaving a gap in our understanding of how social media usage affects different dimensions of job performance. The objective of the study was to examine the impact of social media on employees’ job performance in education sector. The aim was to provide insights for organizations to develop effective strategies and policies regarding social media usage in the workplace. The study was carried out among lecturers from the Faculty of Business and Management (FBM), Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Shah Alam with 66 responses. The sampling technique used was stratified sampling from Department of Economics and Financial Studies. Questionnaire was developed based on a 5-point Likert scale and reliability analysis accepted Cronbach’s Alpha more than 0.7. Based on the findings, all factors namely: (i) work-related use (ii) social-related use, (iii) synchronicity, (iv) dialogism, (v) richness, and (vi) mobility were correlated with job performance and only synchronicity and richness were the most significant factors influencing lecturers’ job performance. These highlighted that synchronization needed between people to work together and collaborate while richness represented by the need of understanding and the meaning shared in the organizations to perform a better job.

Role of Social Media in Promoting Organic Products in Karnali Province, Nepal

This study examines the Karnali Province of Nepal's use of social media to promote organic products. This research examines the unique influence on the growth and awareness of organic products of the global revolution in communication and marketing tactics sparked by the rapid expansion and widespread adoption of social media platforms. The study digs into the tactics adopted in advertising organic products within the unique context of Karnali Province. Data for the study was collected through a survey questionnaire distributed to 300 respondents. The sampling method utilized a convenience sampling to gather diverse information about social media engagement, the choice of social media platforms, marketing strategies employed on these platforms, awareness levels of organic products, consumer behavior, and the effectiveness of organic product promotion. The survey targeted a representative sample of the population in Karnali province. Using the Smart PLS-4 programme, the study analyzed the data it had obtained, concentrating on testing hypotheses and looking at the correlations between the variables. The outcomes contribute to a wider understanding of using social media to promote organic products in addition to providing knowledge particular to a given location. This study adds to our knowledge of how social media, particularly in remote and rural areas like Nepal's Karnali Province, may be a potent and successful instrument for promoting organic products. The results offer useful recommendations for digital marketing tactics customized for certain regional contexts and sustainable agriculture to marketers and policymakers.

The Korean Wave (K-wave), also known as Hallyu, is the term used to describe the phenomenon of Korean pop culture, including TV dramas, movies, pop music, fashion, and online games, becoming widely popular and shared among the people of Japan, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other Asian nations. Korean pop music, also known as K-pop, became a major component of the second K-wave after the first K-wave's drama-focused craze. Additionally, K-pop's fanbase has grown outside of Asia to the West thanks to the quick adoption of social media platforms like YouTube and Twitter. The popularity of K-pop throughout the world helps to improve the perception of "Korea" and has a positive effect on the Korean economy. Social Media Engagement and Student’s Intention in Indonesian Higher Education Using Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology

Understanding the motivations behind the use of social media in higher education is crucial for assessing its potential benefits and challenges. However, examining the contribution of social media on collaborative learning within the context of Indonesian universities holds significance due to the country’s growing digital landscape and increasing adoption of social media platforms. This research aimed to analyze proposed collaborative learning models involving social media use among Indonesian University students. The proposed models are constructed based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). The quantitative method used was analyzing primary data from 143 private university students in Indonesia. Data were collected using a 5-point Likert scale self-reported questionnaire of Internet Anxiety, Habit, and Performance Expectancy and Behavior Intention as well as Social Media Engagement to mediate collaborative learning. The result of this study was that Social Media Engagement and Behavior Intention significantly influence Performance Expectancy and Habit. There was also a significant influence of Internet Anxiety on behavioral intention. Thus, Collaborative Learning is significantly influenced by Social Media Engagement. These results provided insight into developing effective strategies for integrating social media into higher education.

Social Media Platforms and Political Participation: A Study of Jordanian Youth Engagement

The wide adoption of social media platforms has altered how people communicate, obtain information, and participate in society. Regarding political participation, social media has emerged as a novel venue for people to voice their opinions, connect with others who share their viewpoints, and engage in activism. As a result, knowing the effect of social media on political participation is critical, particularly in developing nations like Jordan. This research investigates the moderating effect of certain factors on the impact of social media on political involvement among Jordanian youth. The Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) approach is used to analyze data from a survey of 334 young people. The findings show that social media has a favorable and considerable impact on political participation. Gender was also discovered to have a strong moderating effect on the relationship between social media use and political participation. According to the analysis, gender positively moderates the effect of the frequency of social media use on political participation, while gender negatively moderates the effect of the purpose of social media usage on political participation. The study sheds light on the significance of social media in young people’s political participation in Jordan, emphasizing the need of taking differences in gender into account when developing effective tactics to engage young people in the political processes.

Affinity to mnemonic features of social media: Antecedent and consequences

AbstractThis research explores consumer loneliness and its resulting preference for mnemonic features as the psychological antecedents of social media use and studies its consequence on consumer behavior. To test our hypotheses, we conducted a survey with a large sample (N = 1307) and analyzed the data using PLS structural equation modeling method. We show that individuals with higher (vs. lower) feelings of loneliness show a lower (vs. higher) affinity to mnemonic features of social media platforms, making them more likely to use Snapchat (vs. Facebook). This effect persists after controlling for demographic factors (such as age and gender) and other known motivations behind social media choice. These two groups of social media users also exhibit different types of consumer behavior resulting from their underlying affinity to mnemonic features. Snapchat users tend to be more variety‐seeking and prefer newer brands (vs. established brands) than Facebook users. Our research contributes to the literature on the adoption of social media platforms by studying an important individual difference variable and integrating the concept of mnemonic features of social media as a key driving factor in that choice. The findings can give managers essential insights into the usership of social media platforms and help them select the right platform for their social media campaigns.

The Perceptions of Iraqi Internally Displaced Persons of Social Media Use during War and Conflict

The expansion of social media platforms’ uses through mobile devices to obtain news and information in wars and conflicts is pertinent among refugees and even internally displaced persons (IDPs). A few studies have examined how different social media platforms have enabled users to send and get their news and information about their situation. Explained by the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and the Uses and Gratifications theory, this study examines the impressions of how and why Iraqi IDP respondents use social media platforms, their perceptions, and their adoption of social media platforms in the times of war and conflict especially during the ISIS operations, for communication, information seeking, social interaction and its perceived usefulness regarding continuous usage behavioral intention. A sample of 288 Iraqi IDPs in four large camps in Iraq participated in this research. The findings revealed that most IDP respondents use and adopt various media platforms (traditional and new) for news and information. They, not surprisingly, mostly used their mobile devices to send and get such news and information. Such devices and platforms were very important in enabling them to get in touch with their loved ones, friends and relatives and communicate and socialize with others. These devices, once connected to the Internet, were also important as a tool in seeking information e.g., knowing what assistance is being provided. Dynamically adapting to the new normal: unpacking SMEs’ adoption of social media during COVID-19 outbreaks

PurposeThis paper aims to investigate small and medium enterprises’ (SMEs) adoption of social media platforms and how they integrated them within their marketing strategies during the COVID-19 outbreaks. Dynamic capabilities – observed as the interplay between sensing, seizing and reconfiguration capabilities – represent the principal theoretical framework used in this research to explain challenges in social media adoption and their effects on these businesses.Design/methodology/approachThis study adopts the grounded theory approach to analyze semistructured interviews with 19 key informants from Italian SMEs belonging to diversified industries.FindingsThe findings of this research are summarized in a holistic framework that explores three types of capabilities (i.e. sensing, seizing and reconfiguration capabilities) and the marketing outcomes of social media adoption among SMEs.Originality/valueThis study attempts to unpack the specific dynamic capabilities that allowed SMEs to be successful in social media adoption during COVID-19 outbreaks.

Local governments’ communication on social media platforms: refining and assessing patterns of adoption in Belgium

This article relies on the literature on technology adoption and empirical studies on social media adoption in the public sector to analyze the case of Belgian municipalities. Our objective is threefold as we aim to: (a) provide a new approach to assess the adoption of social media platforms by governments, (b) describe the current situation in Belgium through the concept of “active adoption” and (c) determine the main factors that relate to the uptake of Facebook in Belgian municipalities over 10,000 inhabitants. To achieve these objectives, we used software to retrieve quantitative data regarding Facebook adoption and institutionalization. Our results reveal that municipality size, median age and longevity on the platform are positively associated with the adoption of Facebook. In contrast, median income is, surprisingly, negatively associated with several dimensions of active adoption. These findings contribute to the literature on the factors related to social media use. In addition, the new ways of uncovering social media adoption and institutionalization patterns provide a solid conceptual approach for future research. For practitioners, our study provides municipalities with a better assessment framework and offers them a new model to evaluate social media adoption, underlining the fundamental difference between registration and “active adoption”. #DictatorErdogan: How Social Media Bans Trigger Backlash

ABSTRACT Can authorities effectively shut down widely used social media platforms? This article theorizes that banning social media platforms with existing user bases triggers the psychological mechanism of reactance. Reactance motivates citizens to circumvent bans and ultimately results in intensified criticism of the censoring authorities on banned platforms. Reactance dynamics in response to social media bans are particularly relevant in countries with hybrid regimes – that is, regimes with both democratic and autocratic characteristics. Authorities in these countries generally allow widespread adoption of social media platforms. At the same time, they engage in temporary platform bans, usually to limit antiregime discourse at crucial political junctures such as elections. This combination of large user bases and temporary bans creates a “reactance equilibrium” in which there is high demand among citizens to access the restricted platforms. Unlike with censorship of traditional media such as television and print news outlets, the costs for citizens to circumvent social media bans are relatively low, which allows citizens to act on their reactance states. Drawing on a dataset of 15 million geolocated tweets, this article presents evidence of a censorship backlash to Turkey’s March 2014 Twitter ban, which is considered among the first attempts to block a widely adopted social media platform. A synthetic control model and descriptive statistics reveal widespread circumvention of the ban. Furthermore, sentiment analysis shows that, in the wake of the ban, Twitter discourse became increasingly negative, especially toward the ban’s main progenitor then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Fake News Classification Model Using Machine Learning

The World Wide Web's introduction, as well as the rapid adoption of social media platforms (such as Facebook and Twitter), paved the way for unprecedented levels of knowledge distribution in human history. Certain entities, however, take advantage of such platforms, sometimes for monetary gain and sometimes for the purpose of promoting prejudiced viewpoints, changing mindsets, and disseminating satire or ridiculousness. This phenomenon is known as fake news. Because the spread of fake news can have serious consequences, such as election rigging and widening political divides, developing methods to detect fake news content is critical. A computerised classification system is used to classify a wide range of things. Fake news is a term used to describe this occurrence. Given the serious consequences of fake news, such as swaying elections and widening political divides, developing methods for detecting fake news content is critical. It is difficult to automate the classification of a text article as misinformation or disinformation. We suggest employing a machine learning ensemble approach for automatic classification in this paper. Our research looks into various textual properties such as word counts, term frequency, and inverse document frequency that can be used to distinguish between fake and real content. We train a Passive-Aggressive Classifier and evaluate its performance on real-world datasets using these properties. The datasets will be used in part to train and part to test the classifiers. It is possible to determine whether the news is fake or not by testing the different features of the datasets on the classifier.

Digital archaeological knowledge production and communication among metal detectorists: A web focus group discussion

ABSTRACT As digital tools develop and become more openly available, not only archaeologists but also other groups that have an interest in archaeological heritage and the past are taking more and more digital tools and ideas into use in their research and practices. One such group with particular interests in archaeological heritage is hobbyist metal detectorists. Although the hobby has been around in some countries since as early as the 1960s, it is also clear that digital developments – from state-sanctioned infrastructures such as the emerging national finds recording databases, to detectorist adoption of social media platforms for sharing information – are having a profound effect on hobbyists and their knowledge production practices. In this article, we present and discuss our findings from a web focus group that we carried out with metal detectorists from seven different northern and eastern European countries.

The technology acceptance model revisited: empirical evidence from the tourism industry in Pakistan

Purpose This paper aims to analyze the adoption of social media platforms by tourists in Pakistan. Based on an adaptation of the technology acceptance model (TAM), this study assesses the factors that lead users to adopt these platforms. Design/methodology/approach A survey was administered to a convenience sample of 399 travelers who use social media in Pakistan. A Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted using AMOS to evaluate convergent and discriminant validity as well as composite reliability. Structural equation modeling was applied to examine the causal relationship among all proposed constructs. Findings The findings reveal that the perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived ease of use (PEoU) of a social media platform positively impact the behavioral intention of its users. The proposed constructs of compatibility, enjoyment, user expertise and e-trust all demonstrated their crucial roles in the adoption of a social media platform for tourism-related activities by enhancing the platform's PEoU and usefulness. Originality/value This research validates the relationship between PEoU and PU of a social media platform in the hospitality industry. Interestingly, this study has expanded TAM by validating the addition of four more constructs, (1) compatibility, (2) enjoyment, (3) e-trust, and (4) expertise, to add worth to this model regarding the understanding of social media usage in this specific industry. The findings are valuable both for managers and policymakers in the tourism sector in Pakistan, as the latter can utilize the results to entice a larger segment of social media users to the tourism industry.

Web-based financial reporting, social media and information asymmetry: the case of Saudi Arabia

Purpose This paper aims to examine the effect of Web-based financial reporting and social media platforms on the proxies of information asymmetry in the Saudi Stock Exchange. Design/methodology/approach The sample of this paper consists of 133 Saudi listed non-financial companies for the year 2019. Web-based disclosure level was measured using 25 items, and the social media platforms examined in this study are Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. The information asymmetry proxies are measured using the relative spread and the time-weighted average bid-ask spread. Findings The empirical results have shown that there is a negative and significant relation between Web-based financial reporting and the adoption of social media platforms and the proxies of information asymmetry. Indeed, the relative spread and the time-weighted average bid-ask spread decreased with increased Web-based reporting levels. Among three platforms (Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn), the results show that only the use of Twitter as a channel for information disclosure has a negative and significant effect on information asymmetry proxies. Consequently, in the Saudi context, the authors demonstrate that the assumptions of the agency, stewardship and signaling theories are supported. Also, results reveal that the effect of information disclosure through websites and social media on reducing information asymmetry is stronger for large companies than small companies. Practical implications The paper provides new insights into the role played by websites and social media platforms in the reduction of the information asymmetry in the stock market. Consequently, investors and regulatory authorities in the Saudi financial market must give great importance to online information disclosure and its implications for lowering information asymmetry. This empirical study informs regulators in Saudi Arabia to conduct the better practice of Web-based and social media financial reporting and to regulate the current practice of information disclosure. Besides, the obtained results have the potential to convince firms’ managers to improve online information disclosure to benefit from the reduction in information asymmetry. Originality/value Unlike previous studies, this study investigates, simultaneously, the effect of Web-based and social media information disclosure on the proxies of information asymmetry in a developing economy. In addition, the hypotheses of this study are developed based on a set of theories (the agency, signaling and stewardship theories), to verify the applicability of these three theories in the Saudi context.

The Role of Social Media in Disaster Recovery Following Hurricane Harvey

AbstractHurricane Harvey was social media's first real stress test as a disaster response and recovery mechanism. A confluence of conditions makes it an ideal case study of social media's role in disaster recovery: the lack of a government-issued evacuation order, a call from government leadership for willing and able volunteers with a boat or high-water vehicle to perform life-saving rescues, and wide-spread adoption of social media platforms in the Houston area. While research on online social networks and disasters continues to grow, social scientists know little about how these online networks transform during a crisis and, further, how they drive disaster outcomes. With two original datasets, this study investigates how Houston's online social network transformed during Hurricane Harvey (2017), and the relationship between social media activity and post-Harvey recovery. The findings of a social network analysis (N= 2,387,610) and subsequent statistical analyses reveal the Houston-area online social network grew denser, clustered, and more efficient during the disaster. A spatial analysis and three separate regression models of activity before, during, and after Hurricane Harvey reveal that among 333 Nextdoor Neighborhoods, hyperlocal social media activity was a statistically significant predictor of the rate of rebuilding in these geographically based online communities. These findings suggest that policy and decision-makers should invest into online and offline hyperlocal social networks well before a disaster strikes, and leverage resources and legislation to maintain and strengthen the telecommunications and energy infrastructure that supports access to social media and telecommunications infrastructure during a time of crisis.

Fake News Detection Using Machine Learning Ensemble Methods

The advent of the World Wide Web and the rapid adoption of social media platforms (such as Facebook and Twitter) paved the way for information dissemination that has never been witnessed in the human history before. With the current usage of social media platforms, consumers are creating and sharing more information than ever before, some of which are misleading with no relevance to reality. Automated classification of a text article as misinformation or disinformation is a challenging task. Even an expert in a particular domain has to explore multiple aspects before giving a verdict on the truthfulness of an article. In this work, we propose to use machine learning ensemble approach for automated classification of news articles. Our study explores different textual properties that can be used to distinguish fake contents from real. By using those properties, we train a combination of different machine learning algorithms using various ensemble methods and evaluate their performance on 4 real world datasets. Experimental evaluation confirms the superior performance of our proposed ensemble learner approach in comparison to individual learners.

Cultural influence on the adoption of social media platforms by employees

The growth of technology has impacted billions of lives by allowing people to connect with others through social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Skype, WhatsApp, and so on. Despite the advantages of technology, there has been notable resistance from employees, especially the older generations, who are not eager to adopt social media technologies into their everyday lives. The purpose of this research was to investigate the influence of culture in the adoption of social media by employees in Mafikeng. A questionnaire was utilized to collect data from 252 employees across various government and non-government departments around the Mafikeng business area. The findings revealed the cultural factors that influence employees’ adoption of social media platforms, employees’ readiness to adopt social media, and the impacts of culture on social media adoption by employees.
