Male Involvement in Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

Sexual and reproductive health and rights focus on advocating, supporting, and participating in various aspects of male involvement in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Family planning, safe abortion, HIV and RTIS/STI prevention and treatment, and maternal health care pursue male involvement. The article employs a review of relevant contemporary literature from various resources. Men have three specific sexual roles as clients, supportive partners, and agents of change to their spouses as well as societies. More specifically, men's involvement accelerates the effectiveness of family planning programmes, promotes mitigating gender-based violence, promotes women empowerment, enhances adolescent reproductive health, maternity care, and knowledge and behavior change on HIV/AIDS, STIs, and RTIs. However, there are more significant challenges to male involvement in sexual and reproductive health and rights. Despite the need for men’s involvement in SRHR, there are barriers in various forms, such as social stigma, cultural determinants, and financial restrictions. Government policies can address the barriers to providing equitable services to needy people.

A scoping review of strategies for adolescents' sexual and reproductive health role modelling.

Individuals strive to maintain their sexual and reproductive health (SRH) by being exposed to correct information, having access to contraceptives, and promoting safe sex practices. Adolescent SRH promotion efforts should consider the influence of role models. This review explored the availability and nature of strategies and programmes on adolescents' SRH role modelling and described them using a scoping review. Studies were retrieved from four databases and grey literature through a search of 223 studies. The databases included EBSCO-host, Medline, Sabinet, and Pubmed. Data extraction was guided by a data-extraction tool adapted from the JBI Manual for Evidence Synthesis. The characteristics of the selected studies were recorded in a Microsoft spreadsheet. Eleven studies published between 2014 and 2022 were included for the final review and analysed using thematic analysis. Selected articles focused on adolescents' SRH; however, only two studies focused particularly on role modelling. Nonetheless, some aspects of the findings and recommendations presented could be extrapolated to adolescents' SRH role modelling. This includes adolescent-parent communication on SRH, community engagement, mentoring, positive role modelling, and information sharing through media campaigns. There is a lack of literature on SRH role modelling because most studies did not focus on role modelling as an aspect of SRH. Therefore, research needs to be conducted on strategies and programmes focusing on SRH modelling.Contribution:The findings of this scoping review may encourage the development and implementation of strategies and programmes targeting adolescents' SRH throughout diverse communities to promote adolescent SRH.

Peningkatan pengetahuan, sikap, dan psikomotorik melalui pembekalan duta Usaha Kesehatan Sekolah (UKS) SMK Kesehatan Binatama Yogyakarta

Healthy behavior must be accustomed to from an early age and become a habit. At the school age, healthy living habits can be carried out by integrating health programs with school activities through School Health Business activities commonly known as School Health Units (UKS). The purpose of this community service is to provide training for class X students of SMK Kesehatan Binatama Yogyakarta as UKS Ambassador candidates and will carry out the UKS mentoring program at the junior high school level. The debriefing is carried out through an interactive method of delivering material using counseling media/tools, discussion, and simulations/direct practice. The themes given are introduction of UKS, communication, counseling methods, Three Basic Threats Adolescent Reproductive Health (TRIAD KRR), basic health and hand washing practices, drug management guidelines and self-medication. From the pre and post test the results are the percentage of participants' knowledge and attitudes increased by 90.5%. Participants also showed an increase in psychomotor abilities through simulations/practices that were directly observed. In order to become a sustainable program, the UKS Ambassador debriefing activities can be attended by students of class XI and XII, with a longer duration of time, and presenting the UKS Advisory Team as one of the presenters.

Factors Associated with Teenage Pregnancy in Mutasa District, Zimbabwe

Teenage pregnancies are a global problem mainly in marginalised communities resulting in complications, societal rejection and deaths. In Zimbabwe, 48% of the teenage pregnancies occurred between 13-19 years. Mutasa District, one of the Districts in Zimbabwe has high rate of teenage pregnancies. Teenage abortions rose from 3/1000 in 2018 to 5/1000 in 2019. We conducted a study on the factors associated with teenage pregnancies in Mutasa District in the year 2018 and 2019. The specific objectives were to determine the prevalence of teenage pregnancies, to determine the sociocultural, economic and religious factors influencing teenage pregnancies and to assess the availability and utilisation of Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health Services. A multi-methods+ study design was used with a sample size of 80 cases and 80 controls from four hospitals in Mutasa. Systematic sampling was employed where every <i>3<sup>rd</sup> </i>subject was systematically selected upon satisfaction of the inclusion criteria, with sampling interval observed. A quantitative survey and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) were used to collect data. The results showed that 72 (90%) of the cases only had primary school education. Being single orphans 60 (75%), having information and education gaps 77 (96.3%), being chased off home to go to the male partner 49 (61.3%) were the prevalent factors linked to teenage pregnancies. Having been disciplined when found with contraceptives led to 41 (51.3%) of the pregnancies. Having the boyfriend as a source of livelihood allowances contributed to 59 (73.8%) of teenage pregnancies while being a member of an Apostolic Sect contributed 65 (82.3%) of the cases. The FGDs revealed that the Youth Friendly Centres were inadequate for the community, poorly resourced having no comprehensive preventive services and therefore poorly utilised. In addition, teenage pregnancy preventions were stereotyped to females only with current interventions being predominantly reactionary than preventive. The findings of this study suggest the need for reproductive health information, gender inclusive programming, and provision of a sundry of well-resourced Youth Friendly Centres in the District and a focus on tailor-made preventive interventions rather than punitive ones.

Statistical Analysis of the Effect of Educational Opportunities and Community Involvement on Adolescents and Sexual Reproductive Health Policy on Retention of Girl Child in Public Secondary Schools in Butula Sub-County, Kenya

Girls’ retention in schools has been found to be a major challenge. Failure to retain girls in secondary schools can be considered as a waste of potential human resources and money spend on them in primary education and time lost in sending them to school in the first place. These girls may become a breed of illiterate women who are less productive economically, socially and politically. Among the critical contemporary social issues affecting many countries is teenage pregnancies. This research, therefore, analyses the effect of educational opportunities and community involvement on girl child retention in public secondary schools in Butula sub-county, Kenya using statistical method. Specifically, the research seeks to establish statistically the impact of educational opportunities and community involvement on girl child retention in public secondary schools in Butula Sub-county, Busia County. The study targeted a sample size of 300 respondents which were selected using convenient and purposive sampling techniques based Mugenda and Mugenda (2004) formula. Also, the data from both primary and secondary sources was used in the study. The instruments for gathering the data comprised questionnaires, interviews, and records from the schools. A SPSS version 25 was used to establish any link between the Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health Policy and girl child retention in public secondary schools Butula Sub-County, Busia County. This study will increase understanding of the effect of teenage pregnancy on class attendance in public secondary schools in Butula Sub-county. The findings of the study indicated that girls missed school during their menstruation because sanitary facilities were inadequate.

Boosting Contraceptive Uptake in Urban Uganda: Older Women Benefit When Layering Adolescent and Youth Interventions Onto Existing Family Planning Programming.

Uganda has a large young population with a high unmet need for family planning (FP). Although there have been many efforts to improve access to and uptake of contraception, improvements have been slow. The Ministry of Health Uganda partnered with The Challenge Initiative (TCI) to implement a novel multipronged approach layering adolescent and youth sexual reproductive health (AYSRH) onto a functioning general FP program for women of reproductive age in 3 local governments of Buikwe, Mukono, and Iganga. We describe the approach and aim to determine whether layering AYSRH interventions onto an existing program resulted in increased contraceptive uptake among adolescents and youth aged 10-24 years and among women aged 25-49 years. We analyzed service statistics from the Uganda Health Management Information System to assess contraceptive uptake for adolescents and youth (aged 10-24 years) and older women (aged 25-49 years) before and after the implementation of the AYSRH approach in 3 areas (Buikwe, Iganga, and Mukono) compared to 11 areas where only the general FP program was implemented and the Uganda country total. This analysis showed that before the start of TCI's support, levels of contraceptive uptake were similar in all local governments. However, after implementation, there was an increase in uptake for general FP program only areas (1.7-point advantage over country total) and an even greater increase in general FP+AYSRH areas (2.4-point advantage over FP only programming). This was observed in both adolescents and youth aged 10-24 years and among women aged 25-49 years. The layering of TCI's AYSRH interventions onto a well-functioning FP platform not only increased contraceptive uptake among adolescents and youth aged 10-24 years but also boosted uptake among women older than age 25 years.

Implementing Quality Improvement Initiatives to Improve the Use of Adolescent- and Youth-Friendly Health Services in Zou, Benin.

In Benin, the unmet need for family planning services is especially high for adolescent girls and youth aged 15-24 years. The Challenge Initiative (TCI) supported the health system to assess and improve the quality of adolescent and youth sexual reproductive health services and enhance contraceptive uptake in 65 service delivery points (SDPs) of the Zou department. Between June 2019 and March 2021, TCI supported the health districts in Zou to train an assessment team to complete 3 cycles of quality assessments (QAs) using a QA checklist adapted to the local context. Based on assessment scores, the SDPs were categorized into poor, moderate, or good to excellent quality. The SDP managers developed remedial action plans after each cycle and for each SDP and followed up with supportive supervision. The first QA cycle showed that 52% of assessed SDPs achieved a good to excellent classification; by the second QA cycle, this reached 74%. However, the quality of adolescent- and youth-friendly health services regressed during the third QA cycle (during COVID-19 pandemic disruptions), when only 40% of SDPs achieved the good to excellent category. Between the first and second QA cycles, contraceptive uptake for adolescents and youth improved in the SDPs that had good or excellent quality of services, compared to the ones that were of lower quality (established significance level of 5% with a P value of .031). Further assessments could deepen our understanding of the internal and external factors that can affect service quality. The findings reinforce the importance of investing in quality improvement strategies to maximize the use of sexual and reproductive health services among adolescents and youth. They also underscore the need for a contextual and nuanced approach to ensure enduring results.

Adolescent Reproductive Health Counseling in The Framework of Stunting Prevention

Adolescents/teenagers are the age group from 10 years to before the age of 18 years. Efforts to maintain adolescent health aim to prepare adolescents to become healthy, intelligent, qualified, and productive adults and to participate in maintaining, maintaining, and improving their health. Adolescent health is very important to pay attention to because, during this period, teenagers experience significant physical, psychological, and social changes. Adolescent health efforts include positive development, accident prevention, violence prevention, reproductive health, prevention and control of infectious diseases and prevention of non-communicable diseases, nutrition and physical activity, mental health, and adolescent health in crises. This community service takes the topic of reproductive health to increase participants' knowledge about reproductive health. This community service method uses an educational approach through counselling with a total of 136 participants who are students of SMPN 2 Jatigede, Ciranggem Village, Sumedang Regency, West Java. Counselling is carried out by involving resource persons who are experts in their fields. The results of the counselling showed that there was a significant increase in participants' knowledge, as indicated by the results of the post-test. Participants in the "good" category increased in number from 3 people (2.2%) at the pre-test to 98 people (72.1%) at the time. Post-test, as well as participants who had sufficient knowledge, experienced a reduction in numbers from 73 (53.7%) to the remaining 37 people (27.2%).

An Overview Review of Understanding the Need for Adolescents Sexual and Reproductive Health Interventions

Adolescents are the most vulnerable group, who are denied to access information and guidance related to sexual and reproductive health needs because of the social taboos that lead them to encumbrances. This review study helps to understand the different perspectives of sexual and reproductive health based on cultural, sociological, physiological, and economical aspects. The paper explains sexuality from the theoretical perspectives. Adolescence is the transitional stage where physiological, biological, and psychological changes occur, at the same time proper knowledge about sexual and reproductive health should be provided with importance of sexual and reproductive health interventions. It intricates the availability and effectiveness of adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH). The methodology is a systematic review with PRISMA guidelines sourced from various databases of PubMed databases, Research Gate, Science Direct, BMC Public Health, Web of Science, SAGE, Scopus, WHO library, and other websites relevant to this study. The recent literature highlighted the importance of sexual and reproductive health interventions among adolescents. The study has concluded with the findings impact of Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Health (ASRH) intervention programmes and to develop an increase in effective ASRH programmes, which will help the adolescents to know the importance of sexual hygiene and reproductive hygiene.

Incorporating Cardiovascular Risk Assessment into Adolescent Reproductive Health and Primary Care Visits

Study ObjectiveThis study aimed to evaluate the usability and feasibility of incorporating a cardiovascular risk assessment tool into adolescent reproductive health and primary care visits. Design, Setting, and ParticipantsWe recruited 60 young women ages 13-21 years to complete the HerHeart web-tool in 2 adolescent clinics in Atlanta, GA.Main Outcome Measures: Participants rated the tool's usability via the Website Analysis and Measurement Inventory (WAMMI, range 0-95) and their perceived 10-year and lifetime risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) on a visual analog scale (range 0-10). Participants’ perceived risk, blood pressure, and body mass index were measured at baseline and 3 months after enrollment. Health care providers (HCP, n = 5) completed the WAMMI to determine the usability and feasibility of incorporating the HerHeart tool into clinical practice. ResultsAdolescent participants and HCPs rated the tool's usability highly on the WAMMI with a median of 79 (interquartile range [IQR] 65, 84) and 76 (IQR 71, 84). At the baseline visit, participants’ median perceived 10-year risk of a heart attack was 1 (IQR 0, 3), and perceived lifetime risk was 2 (IQR 0, 4). Immediately after engaging with the tool, participants’ median perceived 10-year risk was 2 (IQR 1, 4.3), and perceived lifetime risk was 3 (IQR 1.8, 6). Thirty-one participants chose to set a behavior change goal, and 12 participants returned for follow-up. Clinical metrics were similar at the baseline and follow-up visits. ConclusionHerHeart is acceptable to young women and demonstrates potential for changing risk perception and improving health habits to reduce risk of CVD. Future research should focus on improving retention in studies to promote cardiovascular health within reproductive health clinics.

A qualitative evaluation of stakeholder perspectives on sustainable financing strategies for ‘priority’ adolescent sexual and reproductive health interventions in Ghana

BackgroundAdolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) interventions are underfunded in Ghana. We explored stakeholder perspectives on innovative and sustainable financing strategies for priority ASRH interventions in Ghana.MethodsUsing qualitative design, we interviewed 36 key informants to evaluate sustainable financing sources for ASRH interventions in Ghana. Thematic content analysis of primary data was performed. Study reporting followed the consolidated criteria for reporting qualitative research.ResultsProposed conventional financing strategies included tax-based, need-based, policy-based, and implementation-based approaches. Unconventional financing strategies recommended involved getting religious groups to support ASRH interventions as done to mobilize resources for the Ghana COVID-19 Trust Fund during the global pandemic. Other recommendations included leveraging existing opportunities like fundraising through annual adolescent and youth sporting activities to support ASRH interventions. Nonetheless, some participants believed financial, material, and non-material resources must complement each other to sustain funding for priority ASRH interventions.ConclusionThere are various sustainable financing strategies to close the funding gap for ASRH interventions in Ghana, but judicious management of financial, material, and non-material resources is needed to sustain priority ASRH interventions in Ghana.

Knowledge and Perceptions of Adolescent Girls on HIV/AIDs and Family Planning

Nepali adolescent girls face distinct challenges in HIV/AIDS and family planning, necessitating a nuanced understanding. Global concerns for adolescent reproductive health and rights, emphasized in international conferences, apply to Nepal’s struggle with HIV/ AIDS, particularly among young people. In this context, this studyaims to investigate knowledge and perceptions of adolescent girls on HIV/AIDS in Nepali context. Moreover, this study concerns on exploring cultural norms and social determinants that affect family planning among adolescents in Nepal. The researcher has employed survey research design of quantitative research by taking data from 111 late adolescent girls (15-19 years) through questionnaires in Sindhuli. Findings reveal age-related influences on reproductive health knowledge and perceptions. While family planning awareness is widespread, specific method knowledge disparities exist. Despite challenges, most exhibit positive perceptions and behaviours towards people living with HIV/AIDS. This research contributes evidence-based interventions, emphasizing the need for context-specific strategies to address the reproductive health needs of adolescent girls in Nepal.

Determinants of unintended pregnancy and induced abortion among adolescent women in Ethiopia: Evidence from multilevel mixed-effects decomposition analysis of 2000-2016 Ethiopian demographic and health survey data.

Adolescents are highly at risk of unintended pregnancy due to physiological, sexual, social and psychological growth. The pregnancy may end with early childbirth, induced abortion and its complications. Although, the trends of unintended pregnancy and induced abortion have declined over time in Ethiopia, evidence is limited on key determinants for decline in order to propose vital areas of interventions. The current study aimed to identify the determinants of unintended pregnancy and induced abortion among adolescents over the decades. Trends in the prevalence of unintended pregnancy and induced abortion among adolescent women aged 15-19 years were investigated based using a series of the Ethiopia Demographic and Health Surveys (EDHS) data for the years 2000, 2005, 2011, and 2016. Sub-sample of adolescent women data was extracted from each survey. The combined datasets for unintended pregnancy and induced abortion over the study period (2000-2016) was analyzed. The percentage changes of trends of unintended pregnancy and induced abortion with its corresponding 95% CI for each variable were calculated. Multilevel mixed-effects decomposition analysis was applied to identify factors significantly associated with trends of unintended pregnancy and induced abortion among adolescents. The trends of unintended pregnancy and induced abortion significantly declined during the study period. Unintended pregnancy among Ethiopian adolescents aged 15-19 years significantly decreased from 307 (41.4%) (95% CI: 35.7, 47.2%, p<0.001) in 2000 to 120 (25.1%) (95% CI: 18.9, 31.4%) in 2016. On the other hand, induced abortion significantly decreased from 62 (8.3%) (95% CI: 5.2, 11.4%) in 2000 to 20 (4.1%) (95% CI: 1.3, 6.9%, p = 0.004) in 2016. Age older than 18 years (Coeff = -0.41, 95%CI, -0.64, -0.18, p<0.001), living in Somali regional state (Coeff = -2.21, 95%CI, -3.27, -1.15, p<0.001) and exposure to media (Coeff = -0.60, 95%CI, -0.87, -0.33, p<0.001) showed a significance association with decline in unintended pregnancy whereas; living in Benshangul-Gumuz regional state (Coeff = -0.17, 95%CI, -0.32, -0.19, p = 0.03) and ANC service utilization history (Coeff = -0.81, 95%CI, -1.45, -0.17, p = 0.01) showed significance association with decline in induced abortion. The trends of unintended pregnancy and induced abortion significantly declined over the past decades in Ethiopia. Adolescent girls aged 17 years and above, exposure to media and living in Somali showed significant association with decline in unintended pregnancy whereas; living in Benshangul-Gumuz and ANC service utilization history showed significant decline with induced abortion. Exposure to media and utilization of Antenatal care (ANC) services may improve adolescent girls' reproductive health uptake.

Study of Factors Associated with Low Birth Weight in the Bounkiling Health District in 2020 (Senegal)

&amp;lt;i&amp;gt;Introduction&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt;: Neonatal mortality is particularly high in developing countries. Low birth weight (LBW) is a major public health problem in both developing and developed countries. It accounts for a significant proportion of neonatal deaths. The aim of this study was to determine the factors associated with the occurrence of low birth weight in the Bounkiling health district in 2020. &amp;lt;i&amp;gt;Methodology&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt;: This was a retrospective case-control study of the various factors associated with low birth weight, based on women&amp;apos;s delivery records from maternity units in the Bounkiling health district throughout 2020. Mothers&amp;apos; socio-demographic characteristics, obstetrical and medical history, and information on the health status of the newborn in the case group (weight less than 2,500 grams) were compared with those in the control group (weight greater than or equal to 2,500 grams). Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed using Épi info 7 software to identify risk factors associated with LBW. &amp;lt;i&amp;gt;Results&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt;: The study showed that low birth weight accounted for 97.05% of LBW, the sex ratio was 0.87 in favor of girls, the Apgar score at birth was not good (below 7) for 31.43% of newborns. Teenage mothers accounted for 17.08%. Women with no schooling accounted for 71.34%, and those living in households with a monthly income of less than 50,000 CFA francs per month were 63.71%. Results of the multivariate analysis showed that the risk factors for LBW (p &amp;lt; 0.05) were female sex of the newborn (AOR=1.59 with CI=1.07 - 2.35), Apgar score at birth (AOR=2.79 with CI=1.77 - 4.41), young maternal age under 19 (AOR=2.42 with CI=1.43- 4.12), household income under 50,000 CFA francs, (AOR=1.97 with CI=1.27-3.04), maternal history of low birth weight (AOR=3.62 with CI=2.02-6.50), physical labor during pregnancy (AOR=1.80 with CI=1.20 - 2.69). &amp;lt;i&amp;gt;Conclusion&amp;lt;/i&amp;gt;: Improving neonatal health through a reduction in LBW will depend on intensifying the implementation of strategies focused on adolescent reproductive health, strengthening communication with adolescent girls and community leaders on the issue of early marriage and pregnancy, improving pregnancy monitoring at health facilities and raising the socio-economic level of women through their empowerment.

The relationship between attitudes and porn viewing activities with pre-marital sexual behavior in adolescents

Introduction: The widespread availability of the internet, coupled with adolescents' natural curiosity about sexuality, has created avenues for accessing pornographic websites. However, this curiosity, when not tempered with self-restraint, can lead adolescents into the habit of watching pornographic films. One significant consequence of engaging in this behavior is its potential to influence pre-marital sexual activity among adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the correlation between attitudes toward and the frequency of watching pornographic movies and pre-marital sexual behavior among adolescents in Sidoarjo.Methods: The study employed a descriptive analytics approach with a cross-sectional design. A sample of 138 adolescents was selected using probability sampling, specifically the cluster simple random sampling method. Two research instruments were utilized: the Cyber Pornography Use Inventory (CPUI) for gathering data on porn-watching activity and the Adolescent Sexual Activity Index (ASAI) for collecting information on sexual behavior. The data were then analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation method.Results: The findings indicated that the majority of students in Sidoarjo exhibited a non-supportive attitude category (48.6%, n= 67), with low engagement in watching porn movies (44.2%, n= 61), and most teenagers demonstrated low/less risky sexual behavior (63%, n= 87). Moreover, the results revealed significant relationships between attitudes and sexual behavior (P-value &lt;0.001) as well as between watching porn and sexual behavior (P-value &lt;0.001).Conclusions: This research suggests the importance of parental and teacher involvement in guiding and supervising adolescents to prevent engagement in risky behaviors such as watching pornography and engaging in pre-marital sexual activity. By actively monitoring their children and providing guidance, parents and teachers can play a crucial role in minimizing such behaviors and promoting adolescent reproductive health through counseling and education. Assistance for Youth Counselors in Efforts to Improve the Implementation of PIK-R

The Youth Information and Counseling Center is a forum for program activities managed for teenagers. The aim of this service is to provide refreshing insight into the function of PIK teenagers as a youth information center and to provide knowledge and skills to youth counselors regarding adolescent reproductive health. This is done by optimizing PIK-KR recording and reporting and training youth counselors by means of socialization through role playing, lectures, discussions and mentoring on the PIK-R program as well as structuring the reporting recording system and simulating how to fill out PIK-R documents. Testing the knowledge and skills of adolescent cadres is regarding adolescent reproductive health and its problems by providing pre-tests and post-tests. The results of the community service show that out of 30 training participants in the pre-test, 28 people got a score &lt;50 and 2 participants got a score &gt;50, with an average score of 40.8. After the intervention was carried out, there was an increase in knowledge as evidenced by an increase in the post-test scores of the training participants. The results showed an increase with an average score of 80. The conclusion of this community service is that the intervention carried out by the community service team has proven to be effective in increasing the knowledge of training participants. It is recommended to continue the same intervention with other trainees to improve their overall knowledge.

Health Services Strategy of Adolescent Sexual Reproductive Health in Developing Countries

Background: In the developing country 1 in 5 women give birth before the age of 18 years old. The problem of pregnancy is part of the main causes of death in youth between 15 to 19 years old, especially because of abortion complications and unsafe childbirth. Aims: To determine the strategy of health services for adolescent reproduction in developing countries. Method: using the design of scoping review with PRISMA-ScR checklist. Using Arksey and O'Malley in the form of (1) identified research questions, (2) identified relevant articles, (3) chosen articles, (4) data mapping and (5) presented data/result, discussion, and conclusion. Finding articles using 4 databases Ebsco, ScienceDirect, Pubmed, and Wiley Online Library. Results: The strategy of health service for adolescent reproduction in developing countries that can be done is health education/comprehensive sexuality education (CSE), youth-friendly service, and model of sexuality education enhancement (SEE). Conclusion: all of the three strategies the most applied is youth-friendly service followed by health education in the form of CSE. For the next research, it is expected to be able to analyze and evaluate a more dominant strategy also more effective in handling sexual health and adolescent reproduction both in developed countries and developing countries.

Effects of an intervention to improve sexual and reproductive health on level and predictors of awareness and knowledge of condoms and dual protection amongst adolescents in Nigeria

BackgroundAdolescents need both information about sexual behaviours and potential risks in order to make the right choices. This study compared adolescents’ level of awareness and predictors of knowledge of condoms and dual protection where a multi-component sexual and reproductive health (SRH) intervention was implemented and in communities where the intervention was not implemented, so as to understand the effect of the intervention on awareness and knowledge and also identify predictors of knowledge of contraception methods.MethodsThe study was an intervention study that was undertaken in six local government areas (three rural and three urban LGAs) in Ebonyi state, southeast Nigeria. Data were collected from 855 adolescent boys and girls, using a pre-tested interviewer administered questionnaire. Systematic random sampling technique was used to select eligible households from which adolescents were interviewed Analysis of data was carried out using bivariate and multivariate linear regression analyses. The level of statistical significance was determined by a p value of < 0.05.ResultsThe level of awareness of condoms and dual protection was similar in the intervention and non-intervention communities. However, the predictors of knowledge about condoms and dual protection were different between the intervention and non-intervention groups. The multivariate linear regression showed that the higher the level of education, the higher the level of awareness of contraception methods among adolescents (p < 0.05). Likewise, increasing age by one year and working for pay increased the awareness of condoms and dual protection(p < 0.05).ConclusionThere was no difference in the level of awareness of pregnancy prevention methods, knowledge of condoms and dual protection in both arms of the study. Higher level of education, increasing age, and working for pay are factors associated with awareness of condom and dual protection. These factors should be prioritized for effective Adolescent sexual and reproductive health (ASRH) programming.
