One of the recognized barriers associated with the use of TBL is learner buy-in. This is largely due to the fact that passive classroom learning (such as lectures) still predominates most undergraduate curricula. Nevertheless, current wisdom indicates that if learners are exposed early to TBL and have repeated experiences with the method, their attitudes improve. In other words, as learners gain more experience with TBL they become more comfortable with the process. Since our preclinical medical curriculum has been designed to include TBL as one of the major active-learning modalities, we developed this resource to provide an early experience to begin the process of circumventing this barrier, and also to provide our potential learners with an experiential glimpse of what it would be like to attend our new medical school. This TBL module has been successfully deployed more than 80 times over three admissions cycles. Slight revisions of content and delivery have been made since its inception. Educational Objectives By the end of this module, learners will be able to: Understand the essential foundational concepts and structural components of team-based learning.Apply this knowledge in an experiential exercise related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.
