Chemical incorporation of SiO2 into TiO2 layer by green plasma enhancer and quencher agents for synchronized improvements in the protective and bioactive properties

This study explores the dynamic interaction between environmentally sustainable plasma enhancer and quencher agents during the incorporation of SiO2 into a TiO2 layer, with the primary objective of simultaneously augmenting protective and bioactive attributes. This enhancement is realized through the synergistic utilization of Tetraethyl orthosilicate (TE) and Stevia (ST) within a plasma-assisted oxidation process. To achieve this goal, Ti–6Al–4V alloy underwent oxidation in an electrolyte solution containing acetate-glycerophosphate, with the addition of TE and ST separately and in combination. TE, as a silicon oxide (SiO2) precursor, facilitates the creation of a calcium-rich, rough, porous layer by undergoing hydrolysis to generate silanol groups (Si–OH), which subsequently condense into silicon-oxygen-silicon (Si–O–Si) bonds, resulting in SiO2 formation. In contrast, ST acts as a plasma quencher, absorbing highly reactive plasma species during the oxidation process, reducing energy levels, and diminishing sparking intensity. The combination of TE and ST results in moderate sparking, balancing Stevia's quenching effect and TE's sparking influence. As a result, this coating exhibits enhanced corrosion resistance and bioactivity compared to using either ST or TE alone. The study highlights the potential of this synergistic approach for advanced TiO2-based coatings.

Cellulose acetate/silica composites: Physicochemical and biological characterization

Cellulose acetate is of remarkable scientific interest, becoming more useful when is used in obtaining of the composite materials containing nanoparticles, as result of its improved properties. Thus, cellulose acetate/silica composite films obtained by casting the solutions of cellulose acetate (CA)/tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in different mixing ratios were analyzed in this paper. The impact of TEOS addition, and implicitly of the silica nanoparticles on the mechanical strength, water vapor sorption properties and antimicrobial activity of the cellulose acetate/silica films were mainly monitored. The results of the tensile strength tests were discussed in correlation with data obtained from Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. It was found that samples with low TEOS content show improved mechanical strength compared to samples with high amounts of TEOS. The microstructural characteristics of the studied films affect their moisture sorption capacity so that the weight of the adsorbed water increases with the addition of TEOS. These features are complemented with the antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacterial species. The obtained data show that the cellulose acetate/silica films, and especially those with low silica content have improved properties that can recommend them for applications in the biomedical field.

Zirconium Containing Periodic Mesoporous Organosilica: The Effect of Zr on CO2 Sorption at Ambient Conditions

Two series of zirconium-incorporated-periodic-mesoporous-organosilica (Zr–PMO) materials were successfully prepared, via a co-condensation strategy, in the presence of Pluronic P123 triblock copolymer. The first series of Zr–PMO was prepared using tris[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]isocyanurate (ICS), tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS), and zirconyl chloride octahydrate(ZrCO), denoted as Zr-I-PMO, where I refers to ICS. The second series was synthesized using bis(triethoxysilyl)benzene (BTEE), TEOS, and ZrCO as precursors, named as Zr-B-PMO, where B refers to BTEE. Zr–PMO samples exhibit type (IV) adsorption isotherms, with a distinct H2-hysteresis loop and well-developed structural parameters, such as pore volume, pore width, high surface area, and narrow pore-size distribution. Structural properties were studied by varying the Zr:Si ratio, adding TEOS at different time intervals, and changing the amount of block copolymer-Pluronic P123 used as well as the calcination temperature. Surface characteristics were tailored by precisely controlling the Zr:Si ratio, upon varying the amount of TEOS present in the mesostructures. The addition of TEOS at different synthesis stages, notably, enhanced the pore size and surface area of the resulting Zr-I-PMO samples more than the Zr-B-PMO samples. Changing the amount of block copolymer, also, played a significant role in altering the textural and morphological properties of the Zr-I-PMO and Zr-B-PMO samples. Optimizing the amount of Pluronic P123 added is crucial for tailoring the surface properties of Zr–PMOs. The prepared Zr–PMO samples were examined for use in CO2 sorption, at ambient temperature and pressure (25 °C, 1.2 bar pressure). Zr–PMO samples displayed a maximum CO2 uptake of 2.08 mmol/g, at 25 °C and 1.2 bar pressure. However, analogous zirconium samples, without any bridging groups, exhibited a significantly lower CO2 uptake, of 0.72 mmol/g, under the same conditions. The presence of isocyanurate- and benzene-bridging groups in Zr-I-PMO and Zr-B-PMO samples enhances the CO2 sorption. Interestingly, results illustrate that Zr–PMO materials show potential in capturing CO2, at ambient conditions.

Effects of tetraethyl orthosilicate on rheological behaviors of crumb rubber modified asphalt

The purpose of this work is to study the rheology, fatigue properties and physical changes of crumb rubber modified asphalt (CRMA) after pretreatment of rubber crumbs with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). Six weight ratios of TEOS to crumb rubber, 0%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 35%, and 50%, were chosen to prepare modified crumb rubber (CR) and use it to prepare CRMA. The effects of TEOS on the physical properties of CRMA were analyzed through softening point, penetration and ductility tests. Mechanical tests including multiple stress creep and recovery (MSCR) test, temperature sweep test, and linear amplitude sweep (LAS) test were conducted to evaluate rheological properties and fatigue resistance. The results show that TEOS addition can effectively improve the physical properties, rheological properties and high temperature stability of CRMA. However, the excessive addition of TEOS can decrease rheological properties and fatigue life of rubber-modified asphalt. The results of temperature scanning test and MSCR test show that CRMA has the best G* and δ under the condition that TEOS content is 25% of CR mass; and it has optimal non-recoverable creep compliance (J(nr)) and percentage of recovery (R%). LAS test results indicate that CRMA has better fatigue life when TEOS content is 25% of CR.

SYNTHESIS OF BIOACTIVE MEMBRANES FOR GUIDED TISSUE REGENERATION (GTR): A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF THE EFFECT SILANE-BASED CROSS-LINKER

Membranes for GTR (Guided Tissue Regeneration) are a promising method for treating periodontitis cases. The manufacture of membranes for GTR based on chitosan, gelatin, and carbonated hydroxyapatite (CHA) by crosslinker tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) and (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES) using the freeze-drying method has been successfully carried out. This research is intended to obtain the optimum synthesis method in the manufacture of membranes with the addition of TEOS and APTES cross-linkers. The membrane was synthesized using a ratio of chitosan (CH) and gelatin (G) = 1:2 with a concentration of TEOS and APTES of 1 mol. Membrane synthesis was carried out using 4 (four) different methods, namely G/CH/CHA, G/CH/CHA+TEOS, G/CH/CHA+APTES, and G/CH/CHA+TEOS-APTES. The addition of silane crosslinking agents was intended to increase the stability of the membrane so that it has high mechanical strength. The synthesized membranes were characterized using SEM-EDX, FTIR, XRD, tensile strength test, and water absorption test. The results of SEMEDX characterization show that the G/CH/CHA+TEOS samples have a higher number of pores, this is supported by higher absorption capacity data compared to the G/CH/CHA+APTES and G/CH/CHA+TEOS-APTES. The tensile strength test shows that the G/CH/CHA+TEOS sample has the highest tensile strength, while XRD data showed insignificant differences in crystallinity between synthesis methods. FTIR spectra all show the typical adsorption bands of gelatin and chitosan the formation of hydrogen bonds and silica networks in the membrane. The synthesis G/CH/CHA+TEOS method is proven to be more effective in obtaining the membrane with the highest tensile strength 2.6 ± 0.15 MPa, and absorption capacity of 451.4 ± 135.24%.

Electrochemical detection of food preservative SO2 in red wine using SiO2 coated CdS nanomaterials

Cadmium sulfide is an important chalcogenide semiconductor nanoparticle prepared by reverse micelle method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), surfactant. Toxic CdS is coated with silica using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) precursor and are well characterized. SiO2 provides a sufficient contrast to show the core homogeneously surrounded by the silica shell. The coating can be made thicker by the addition of TEOS resulting in monodispersed silica spheres with CdS core. SO2 is the most important chemical (as preservative and antioxidant) used to prevent wine oxidation. CdS@SiO2 is serving as adsorbent for the detection of SO2 in wine. The detection mechanism and the sensitivity of the method were validated using limit of detection and the limit of quantification values which are determined from differential pulse voltammetric technique. This electrochemical sensing is found to be simple and reliable to detect the free SO2 present in the wine sample.

Synthesis and characterization of mesoporous silica and its application as drug delivery system for glimepiride.

The objective of this study was to synthesize the mesoporous silicate SBA-15 loaded with glimeperide, a slightly soluble antidiabetic, and to investigate the impact of drug loading on the release of glimepiride from this carrier. SBA-15 mesospheres were synthesized by addition of HCl to the trico-polymer (PEO20PPO70PEO20) until complete dissolution, then by addition of tetraethyl orthosilicate, stirring and drying until mesospheres powder was received. The mesopheres were characterized by thermal gravimetric analysis, powder X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transfer infrared analysis. The morphology was examined under a Scanning Electron Microscope. The surface area of the prepared mesospheres was determined by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and the compression behavior of the powder was also studied. Then glimepiride was loaded on the mesospheres and percent loading as well as drug release was studied. Results showed successful preparation of the mesospheres with a glimepiride loading of was 40% with significant release improvement of glimepiride dissolution. A proportion of 70% glimepiride was released in the first 10 min compared to 5 % pure drug. It was concluded that the prepared mesospheres highly improve dissolution of glimeperide.

Development of graphene aerogels with high strength and ultrahigh adsorption capacity for gas purification

Indoor gaseous pollutants pose a great threat to human health, graphene aerogel (GA) has attracted more and more attention due to its high adsorption performance. However, the increase of the adsorption capacity together with high strength for long time and repeat using is still a challenge. In this study, a novel silica modification method was proposed to modify graphene aerogels with high strength and ultrahigh adsorption capability. Apart from its high adsorption capacity for liquid toluene, the adsorption capability to benzene, an indoor pollutant gas, was increased to 809.51 mg/g, which is higher than pure graphene aerogel and other carbon-based adsorbents such as graphene, activated carbon and single-wall carbon nanotubes. The enhanced adsorption performance is due to two reasons in addition to the electrostatic interactions. On one hand, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) could help to modify the pore structure of aerogel, reducing its average pore diameter and increasing its BET specific surface area. On the other hand, the addition of TEOS could help to improve the hydrophobicity of aerogel. The selective adsorption character of graphene aerogels to benzene/toluene binary system in the breakthrough experiment confirmed that the prepared graphene aerogels could also be used in the field of separation of multicomponent indoor pollutant gases.

Structural and optical characterizations of Ce3+ -doped YSO phosphors via the addition of TEOS.

In this work, Y2 O3 phosphors were synthesized utilizing facile sol-gel, combustion, and solid-state techniques. The tested synthesis processes provided various particle sizes from nano to submicron. To synthesize YSO:Ce3+ via a sol-gel method, tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) was used as the precursor for SiO2 . Crystal structure, microstructure, and optical behaviour of the synthesized nanostructured phosphors were studied using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, and photoluminescence (PL) analyses. FT-IR analysis showed that hydrolysis of TEOS gave rise to the generation of Si-O-Si asymmetrical stretching vibrations. Addition of specific amounts of TEOS resulted in the formation of Y2 SiO5 /Y2 Si2 O7 phosphors with different crystal structures. Upon excitation of the phosphors under 354nm radiation, there were two strong emission peaks at 395.6 and 424.1nm, attributed respectively to 5d-2 F5/2 and 5d-2 F7/2 electron transitions of Ce3+ . It was concluded that the most intense PL characteristics belonged to the combination of Y4.67 (SiO4 )3 O, Y2 Si2 O7 , and Y2 SiO5 phosphors.

Fabrication of superhydrophobic PET filter material with fluorinated SiO2 nanoparticles via simple sol–gel process

A high moisture content in the flue gas of iron and steel sintering process causes the issue of filter material pasting, which leads to a decrease in the filtration effect and service life of the filter material. Surface modification of the filter materials is a useful strategy for their hydrophobicity enhancement. Therefore, the Sol–gel method was employed to modify the polyethylene glycol terephthalate (PET) filter with tetraethyl orthosilicate(TEOS) as precursor and perfluorodecyl triethoxysilane (PFDTES) as modifier. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), and contact angle tester were used to characterize the PET filter materials before and after modification, and exhaustive filter efficiency was evaluated by the comprehensive performance test machine. The particle size and distribution of SiO2 nanoparticles were analyzed using a nanometer particle size analyzer, the effects of TEOS/PFDTES loading on the hydrophobic performance and filtration performance of the filter material have been discussed. Based on the results of these studies, superhydrophobic stability of the filter material was evaluated. The results show that the microscopic pore structure of PET filter materials was retained after modification. TEOS modified PET (T-PET) filter materials were completely wetted with static contact angle (WCA) of 0°. The surface energy of PFDTES modified PET (F-PET) filter materials was reduced, the WCA was 144.6 ± 1.6° and WSA was 7.6 ± 4.5°. For TEOS/PFDTES co-modified PET (TF-PET), the SiO2 nanoparticles was modified by the long fluorine chain -CH2CH2(CF2)7CF3 groups, endowing TF-PET with superhydrophobic property. With the increasing of TEOS loading, TF-PET fiber presented significant enhancement of roughness, while average particle size of SiO2 nanoparticles on the fiber surface gradually decreased. The particle size distribution first increased sharply, and then, slowly decreased when TEOS addition was enhanced. TF-PET filter material possessed WCA of 163.2 ± 2.3°, while when TEOS: PFDTES mass ratio was 2.5:2, WSA was 6.2 ± 1.9° with filtration efficiency (0.3 μm) of 68.61%.

Hybrid starch/silica films with improved mechanical properties

Environmental concern has increased the research in development of biodegradable packaging. Although there are many reports about starch films, their physicochemical properties need to be improved, and the introduction of an inorganic compound is an alternative to be applied. However, there are few reports about the development of biodegradable hybrid organic–inorganic films for food packaging. Therefore, the preparation of biodegradable films was proposed by using sol–gel and casting techniques, based on starch and glycerol as plasticizers, with the incorporation of an alkoxide precursor containing silicon, TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate) in different concentrations. Morphological, thermal, optical, and mechanical properties, water solubility, swelling, and water vapor permeability were evaluated. The addition of TEOS was more efficient when it underwent pre-hydrolysis before incorporation into the film-forming solution, significantly interfering with the results of mechanical, optical, and barrier properties. The silica phase was uniformly incorporated into the polymer, presenting micrometric domains. The hybrid films produced have satisfactory properties for application as biodegradable packaging.

In Situ 3D-to-2D Transformation of Manganese-Based Layered Silicates for Tumor-Specific T1-Weighted Magnetic Resonance Imaging with High Signal-to-Noise and Excretability.

Recently, Mn(II)-based T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs) have been explored widely for cancer diagnosis. However, the "always-on" properties and poor excretability of the conventional Mn(II)-based CAs leads to high background signals and unsatisfactory clearance from the body. Here, we report an "in situ three-dimensional to two-dimensional (3D-to-2D) transformation" method to prepare novel excretable 2D manganese-based layered silicates (Mn-LSNs) with extremely high signal-to-noise for tumor-specific MR imaging for the first time. Our observations combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that 3D metal (Mn, Fe, Co) oxide nanoparticles are initially formed from the molecular precursor solution and then in situ transform into 2D metal (Mn, Fe, Co)-based layered silicates triggered by the addition of tetraethyl orthosilicate, which provides a time-saving and versatile way to prepare novel 2D silicate nanomaterials. The unique ion-exchangeable capacity and high host layer charge density endow Mn-LSNs with an "ON/OFF" pH/GSH stimuli-activatable T1 relaxivity with superb high signal-to-noise (640-, 1200-fold for slightly acidic and reductive changes, respectively). Further in vivo MR imaging reveals that Mn-LSNs exhibit a continuously rapid T1-MRI signal enhancement in tumor tissue and no visible signal enhancement in normal tissue, indicating an excellent tumor-specific imaging. In addition, Mn-LSNs exhibit a rapid excretion from the mouse body in 24 h and invisible organ toxicity, which could help to solve the critical intractable degradation issue of conventional inorganic CAs. Moreover, the tumor microenvironment (pH/GSH/H2O2) specific degradability of Mn-LSNs could help to improve the penetration depth of particles into the tumor parenchyma. Developing this novel Mn-LSNs contrast agent, together with the already demonstrated capacity of layered silicates for drug and gene delivery, provides opportunities for future cancer theranostics.

Synthesis and Characterization of Silica Aerogel from Rice Husk with Ambient Pressure Drying Method

Rice husk has become global concern due to the environmental problem since it has been dumped and open burned that contributed to the emissions of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. Therefore, utilization of rice husk to other useable product such as silica aerogel for adsorption has been study recently due to the silica content in rice husk is about 60% and this material is sustainable and cost effective. Silica aerogel was prepared from rice husk ash and dried by using ambient pressure drying method with addition of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) due to its capability to prevent the gel from crack and increase the porosity of gel to increase the capacity of adsorption process. The silica aerogel was further characterized by using Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Elemental Anaylzer (EA) and Scanning Electron Microscopic (SEM). The results show that the silica aerogel was successfully synthesized using rice husk ash. The FTIR studies reveal that silica aerogel produced consist of amorphous silica with Si-O-Si bonding and stretching’s. From EA analysis, the carbon in the rice husk decreasing when turn into silica aerogel due to the burning of carbon content in the preparation of silica. The SEM studies confirm that the silica aerogel has a porous structure and has ability to for the application adsorption process such as carbon dioxide adsorption, methylene blue adsorption and others application.

Synthesis of iron oxide nanocube patched Janus magnetic nanocarriers for cancer therapeutic applications.

Janus magnetic particles, which can be customized for various multifunctionalities, have promising potential for cancer therapeutic carriers. Herein we synthesized iron oxide nanocube (IONC) patched Janus magnetic nanocarriers (IONCs-P-JMNC) using emulsification and interface evaporation/assembly. Novel IONC patches were generated with an optimal ratio of CTAB and oleic acid coated IONCs in the emulsion. 2D assembled IONC patched Janus magnetic porous silica nanocarriers (IONCs-P-JMNC) formed with the addition of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). The anisotropically IONC patched Janus nanocarriers, allowing effective MRI T2* contrast and magneto-mechanical properties, are expected to be used for a new type of multifunctional carrier in cancer therapeutic applications.

Surface Modification of PET Fiber with Hybrid Coating and Its Effect on the Properties of PP Composites.

Surface modification fundamentally influences the morphology of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers produced from abandoned polyester textiles and improve the compatibility between the fiber and the matrix. In this study, PET fiber was modified through solution dip-coating using a novel synthesized tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS)/KH550/ polypropylene (PP)-g-MAH (MPP) hybrid (TMPP). The PET fiber with TMPP modifier was exposed to the air. SiO2 particles would be hydrolyzed from TEOS and become the crystalline cores of MPP. Then, the membrane formed by MPP, SiO2 and KH550 covered the surface of the PET fiber. TMPP powder was investigated and characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). TMPP-modified PET fiber was researched by X-ray diffraction and SEM. Furthermore, tensile strength of single fiber was also tested. PET fiber/PP composites were studied through dynamic mechanical analysis and SEM. Flexural properties of composites were also measured. The interfacial properties of PET fiber and PP matrix were indirectly represented by contact angle analysis. Results showed that the addition of TEOS is helpful in homogenizing the distribution of PP-g-MAH. Furthermore, TMPP generates an organic-inorganic ‘armor’ structure on PET fiber, which can make up for the damage areas on the surface of PET fiber and strengthen each single-fiber by 14.4%. Besides, bending strength and modulus of TMPP-modified PET fiber-reinforced PP composite respectively, increase by 10 and 800 MPa. The compatibility between PET fiber and PP was also confirmed to be increased by TMPP. Predictably, this work supplied a new way for PET fiber modification and exploited its potential applications in composites.

Manufacturing and Assessment of Electrospun PVP/TEOS Microfibres for Adsorptive Heat Transformers

A new adsorbent coating for the adsorber unit of an adsorption heat pump made of hybrid, organic–inorganic microfibres was prepared and characterized. Different coatings were obtained by the electrospinning of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) solutions added with different quantities of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS). PVP is a polymer with water adsorption capability and the TEOS addition allowed to increase the thermal stability of microfibres. The aim, indeed, was to preserve the polymeric structure of microfibres in order to obtain coatings with high flexibility and mechanical strength. The results demonstrated that TEOS concentrations in the range of 5–13 wt.% produced microfibre coatings of non-woven textile structure with both good water affinity and good thermal stability. SEM images of coatings showed that the deposited microfibre layers have both a high surface area and a high permeability representing a significant advantage in adsorption systems.

Synthesis of silica-alginate nanoparticles and their potential application as pH-responsive drug carriers.

Composite silica-alginate nanoparticles were prepared via silica sol-gel technique using a water-in-oil microemulsion system. In our system, cyclohexane served as the bulk oil phase into which aqueous solutions of sodium alginate were dispersed as droplets that confined nanoparticle formation after addition of tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS). Our studies showed that much of the particle growth is completed within the first 24 hours and reaction times up to 120 hours only resulted in an additional 5% increase in particle diameter. Average particle size was found to decrease with increasing water-to-surfactant molar ratio (R) and with increasing cocentration of alginate in the aqueous phase. The potential for drug loading during particle formation was demonstrated using rhodamine B as a model drug. In vitro release studies showed that particles incubated in pH 2.5 phosphate buffer released only about 7% of the drug load in 27 days, while 42% was released in pH 7.5 phosphate buffer over the same period. Analysis of the release profile suggested that rhodamine B was homogeneously distributed throughout the particle and that the drug diffusivity was 40-fold greater in pH 7.5 buffer compared to that at pH 2.5. These results suggest that silica-alginate nanoparticles could be used as a pH-responsive drug carrier for controlled drug release.

The innovation of antimicrobial and self-cleaning using Ag/TiO2 nanocomposite coated on cotton fabric for footwear application

The Innovation of antimicrobial and self-cleaning material using Ag/TiO2 in a cotton fabric is undertaken to develop capabilities of footwear application. The nanocomposite of Ag/TiO2 was made by using Photo-Assisted Deposition (PAD) method. Ag/TiO2 treated cotton fabrics were impregnated by modified dip coating process with the addition of Tetraethyl Orthosilicate (TEOS) as precursors of SiO2. The addition of TEOS precursors is used to improve TiO2 multifunctional performance in hydrophilic and self-cleaning ability. The synthesized sample of Ag/TiO2 characterized by UV-Visible diffusion reflectance spectrum (UV-Vis DRS) to investigate the gap energy value, X-Ray Diffractometer (XRD) to investigate phase of a crystalline material and crystal size, and Scanning Electron Microscopy - Energy Dispersive X-Ray (SEM-EDX) to investigate the morphology and recognize the type of atom on the surface of a material. The effects of Ag/TiO2 coated cotton fabrics for footwear application on microbial disinfection have been assessed by Total Plate Count (TPC) method, using Escherichia Coli and Candida albicans as a model microorganism of skin bacteria and fungi, respectively. It was found that the optimum loading of Ag at 3wt% is evidenced by the effectiveness in disinfecting Escherichia Coli and Candida albicans up to 100%, the ability to self-cleaning and the ability in hydrophilicity will be described further in this paper.
